We came on a Thursday afternoon to check the place out. It was a beautiful day after a rainy & windy Wednesday, and we wanted to celebrate it with some draft beer after walking by the beach. The server was very friendly. They had limited choices of draft beer. I first tasted a hazy IPA that wasn't on the menu but  recommended by the sweet server. The beer was local. I got a glass of it. The cheddar bacon biscuit is so good. The Bolt ultimate breakfast sandwich comes on this biscuit, and it's a big sandwich for a breakfast sandwich, so filling! The biscuit is also good as a snack on the road. Their lunch sandwiches are also a great portion size. The chicken breast on their sandwiches are juicy and not dry. I went to The Spot restaurant in Hermosa Beach but was disappointed to discover it was permanently closed. I decided to try the Bolt next door. When I walked in it looked like a place that had only coffee, breakfast rolls and muffins. I was wrong. They serve breakfast and lunch. There is a large room to the right of the entrance area with a long communal table, single tables all around and an enclosed patio. The breakfast menu had standard selections with very limited vegan/vegetarian choices. One interesting choice caught my eye, a breakfast pasta consisting of penne pasta with hot and Italian sausages, scrambled eggs and topped with Parmesan, scallions and crumbled bacon. The luncheon menu had sandwiches, salads, one quesadilla, one burger and one vegetarian bowl. I chose the kale Caesar salad with chicken. The chicken was fresh, delicious and a huge portion. I was really hungry and I could only finish half of the salad with plenty of chicken left over for lunch the following day. Only one personal complaint. The chairs were very uncomfortable. I like the vibe. The food and coffee are really good. Only thing is parking can be parking. The staff is really friendly. I've gone several times. This place gets 4 stars for coffee. I have been loving the iced lattes. Today went for breakfast. It was busy, long line to order and it moved fast so not a big deal but the food is terrible. I mean TERRIBLE. I had the huevos rancheros. The beans and salsa looked like they are from the can, not sure but nothing special or even tasty. They top them with a ton of Swiss or American cheese. I thought huevos rancheros are supposed to be top with fresh Mexican cheese. My friend had the braised beef tacos and they were so dried. No salsa comes with it. They brought her a bottle of cholula sauce . We ordered a bacon chives biscuit and it was extremely dried. I don't think they know how to make baked goods. I am confused about raving reviews. The other thing that was a turned off was the amount of flies everywhere. They need to find a way to control the flies. They were busy so tables weren't picked or cleaned up. I had to clean our table. A large table next to us, left all of their food barely touched. I guess they did not enjoy their breakfast either. They don't believe that gluten allergies are real. Literally "you won't get sick" when we asked if something had gluten.

The cookies... oh my. Tried the Oreo sandwich, choc chip, and chocolate with butter. All were delicious. Now I want to go back and try more. The worker was super friendly when telling us about all pastry options! Tons of seating. Would definitely go back to do work and also try the food. read more

I was really looking forward to this coffee shop being a staple of the area- it has an amazing location. Unfortunately it was probably the worst coffee I've ever tasted- literally threw it out after waiting 15 minutes in line for it. Don't let the fancy La Marzocco coffee machine deceive you, because the coffee tastes terribly burnt and bitter (worse than Starbucks). Brisket breakfast tacos were so good (apparently they smoke their own brisket), fresh squeezed OJ and coffee were also good. The blueberry muffin with straight out of the muffin pan and was still warm, I think it was fresh out of the oven, and it was quite possibly the best blueberry muffin that I've ever had. My husband and I hosted a Sunday brunch at BOLT the day after our wedding. We used the outdoor patio in the back for a casual drop-in for our guests to have coffee, eat breakfast, and to say good-byes. Robert was incredible to work with. He made everything so easy, and all of our guests loved it. His staff is always top-notch, super attentive, and very efficient. It was Father's Day and they managed a busy morning in the cafe along with our party very well. We frequent BOLT for breakfast and lunch, so we knew the food would be incredible. The baked goods every morning are our favorite in town. They made us a variety of grab-and-go breakfast burritos and baked goods. It was a casual way to end our wedding weekend in a private location. My book club has been meeting at Bolt for the last several months and everyone there has been friendly and accommodating, even staying open late for our group. Disappointing food and breakfast. The coffee and pastries are very good. But don't get the food.

The food is all very greasy and very average to below average. The staff are usually very friendly and nice. There are 2 fans on the ceiling with cages around the blades, the cages are caked with dirt and dust. Don't order french fries before 11am for some reason. The coffee is decent but nothing about this place is worth visiting when there are almost an unlimited number of much better places to eat or get a coffee read more

Confused why the breakfast burrito online says $10.65 with protein included but when i picked it up there was an added $2 charge for bacon. (online menu says you can add beyond sausage for $1.65 which i didn't but that is still cheaper than the undisclosed added $2 for the included protein. Also, the burrito was put together poorly. The tortilla was not completely wrapped and the ingredients inside were layered from top to bottom. First half was undercooked potato then egg (which was the best part, tasted fresh) then maybe one strip of bacon followed by a few shreds of cheese at the bottom. No hatch salsa. Will be going to Mickey's, Barrons or Phannys next time. Although the burrito was beat all the baked goods are consistently fresh and pleasant. read more

Great disappointment. The positives are good coffee and most of the bacon was delicious. The bad. You order at a counter and add a tip and get almost no service. They give you a number and deliver the food to your table. I ordered the corned beef hash. They then came to the table and said they didn't have any hash. I switched to the bolt Benedict. They walked right past and tried to give my Benedict to someone else even though my number was displayed prominently. I then asked the server for some water. She turned around and pointed at what looked like a broken tap and said I had to get it myself. I had to wiggle out of my bench seat over my neighbors computer bag to get my own water. On the Benedict one egg was cooked through. Some of the bacon wasn't fully cooked but the pieces that were tasty. The English muffin was also toasted unevenly. One side was white and doughy and the other side was half burned. The worst thing was the potatoes. They looked beautifully browned but they weren't cooked through so they were chalky and rubbery and they were cold. The bottom line is the service was poor and cook phoned it in. read more

Cute location in South Hermosa. We loved the relaxed atmosphere. It's also dog friendly so that was a bonus. Now on to the food. I'd pass on the Huevos Rancheros. A few of the breakfast potatoes seemed spoiled and were inedible. My wife took a few bites before giving up on the dish altogether. The breakfast sandwich was decent. The bacon on it was flavorful, however, they forgot my order so it came out twenty minutes after the Eggs Benedict was served. No apology was given or small concession for the error. I'd like to give them a pass but how one forgets half of a two item order where the food is just OK is just not a good first impression. Oh well! Happy we tried something new but this will just be a one time visit for us. read more

The pastries at Bolt are good and made in house. We had a really tasty coffee cake. The food is pretty good but nothing to write home about (which is what you might expect at a place like this). We enjoyed our breakfast tacos and burrito. The main reason for three stars though is that the coffee needs work. I've ordered two double espressos here and they are a full miss in comparison to other local coffee shops like HiFi and Lucky 7. If you're looking for a quality coffee I would look elsewhere until they get that figured out. Wow!! Just decided to eat at a different place in Hermosa and what a very pleasant surprise! Super food- outstanding service - great menu selection. The pulled pork was exceptional as well as the flash fried brussel sprouts- but best of all was the service - absolutely top notch- Theon was the epitome of what exemplifies the very best of excellent service- would recommend Bolt for anyone looking for great food and a great dining experience. I am legitimately obsessed with this cafe & coffee shop! Everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming, the service is amazing, the ambiance is great, the menu is totally approachable and the food is DELICIOUS. It's an order at the counter and take your number to whichever table is catching your eye kinda place so you can get up and go whenever you've finished your meal. Over the last two weeks, I've tried an iced latte, an iced americano, the sausage breakfast burrito, freshly baked in house chocolate chip cookies with sea salt and the rosemary chicken sandwich. I will definitely be ordering all of these items again. So happy to have such a wonderful new spot in our neighborhood that has reasonable prices to boot. Hopefully it stays that way! My only recommendation would be to add a few umbrellas to their outdoor patio space and open a few up during the midday sun (which may already be on the road map?) - as they've only been open a month and it looks like they're still in the process of decorating that part of the space.
