BUYER BEWARE - especially women! So, I don't like to write negative reviews, but I feel compelled to write this one because honestly, this situation made me really angry the more I thought about it and I feel it's important to share with other women who may consider having their vehicles serviced here. I am selling my 2007 Honda that has been very well maintained and has been one of the best cars that I have ever owned. But it has about 200k miles and I felt it was time to get a newer model. On my suggestion, I met the potential buyer (another woman) at this Shell station where she had arranged to have them do a "courtesy check" (which was in itself $134). Upon inspection, they found an oil leak. I rang my boyfriend (who is a mechanic) to ask him to come and look at it. When he looked, he said he felt that the leak was minor and could likely easily be fixed. But I could tell that Shell mechanic was irritated. They told the buyer that they would write up an estimate for repair. Later as I was returning from moving the car into a parking spot I walked into a conversation that the mechanic was having with the buyer stating that the car was going to be nothing but problems for her and that my boyfriend was a "complete idiot and had no idea what he was talking about"! They had also produced her with an estimate of over $3,600 worth of work that they were suggesting should be done to the car before she should even consider buying it!! When I reviewed the estimate, it included a new timing chain kit, air filters, polishing the headlights, tie rod ends, a license plate light bulb a valve cover gasket set, and a few other things... NONE of which were actually wrong with the car but Shell felt like could go wrong at any moment! The oil change repair was not even included in the estimate! When I asked a second time if any of these items were damaged currently, the man at the desk said no, but they could go at any moment. He suggested I dump the car or try to sell it to a dealer. Needless to say, the lady didn't buy the car. I went home and looked up the price for a new Timing Chain Kit with Water Pump and was shocked to see it at Advance Auto Parts for $137!! The same part that Shell was charging $1,436.66 for and an additional $1,000 in labor!!! I also read that most timing chains last as long as the engine does... which is beyond 300k miles with a Honda! I then called Halls (who does much of the service on my car) who said that the timing chain on my car was in good working shape and was just inspected a couple of months earlier!! In looking back through reviews here, this seems to be a common practice with this service station. Whether they are rejecting an inspection and claiming there are significant repairs that are needed or overinflating problems and prices to line their own pockets! I'm sure this review will receive some response claiming to validate their position. But my advice to you, is to go somewhere else...unless you like being called an idiot, or being treated like you are a dumb female or paying them money for the sake of paying them money! There are plenty of service stations that will be HONEST and will treat you professionally with respect, so save yourself the aggravation (and a substantial amount of money) and go elsewhere!! read more

They were nice and fixed my car's issue quickly which I appreciate. I do feel like they upcharged some for the labor, considering how fast the job was. Ultimately a lot of the time one has to take mechanics at their word (unless you're a car expert yourself) and while I believe they were honest and diagnosed the problem accurately it did seem too expensive. read more

I normally do not write a review, but I had too many red flags and they would not stop each time I brought my car in for service. The list is too long to type from the water pump bursting the day after I bought my car in all over my drive way, no oil in my car when it was time for an oil change (I should have had some oil) to almost balled tires (tread 3/2/1) on the front when my tire tread on the back is a 7/8. 9/10 is the rating for new tires. Respectfully I shared my concerns with the owner Scott, but he kept stating it was my fault. His staff did not properly communicate the issues with me and then Scott stated it was my fault. Scott the owner was unwilling to work with me since he made my car unsafe to drive from the oil to the tires. My concern is he might have created an unsafe driving event in the future. Time will tell. I had my car checked out by another mechanic and discovered I did not have any oil leaks and they told me about my tires. Bon Air Shell never informed me. I feed scammed. read more

The mechanics and employees at Bon Air Shell are so helpful and genuine. They are open until 8 PM during the week and also open weekends - I don't have to take off work to pick up or drop off my car. They don't seem to have the employee turnover like other shops and folks greet you when you come in. I've never felt patronized by the mechanic when he talks about specific repairs - seriously, there are women who are mechanically inclined, guys. Scott listens and willingly goes into further detail or explain options if needed without me feeling like I'm wasting his time. And I don't feel like I'm working with a salesperson recommending services I don't need - but he does remind me of upcoming maintenance to complete. Everyone is well-spoken, professional and they return calls quickly. Plus, they take appointments, allow me to pay by phone and my car is ready at the time they quoted when it was dropped off. Locally owned and have a good coupon price on an oil change. Agree with their politics which is a plus.

Had to go inside to pay for gas instead of at the pump what an inconvenience. I was on my lunch break and in a rush to get back and eat and I'm thoroughly pissed that I don't have time to eat. read more

Had a nail in my tire and had to stop. The man let me know he wasn't checking my air for free and would be charging me. I noticed there was a nail in the tire and asked them to patch it. I have never in my live been charged $35 to patch a tire. What a rip off. They truly should be ashamed taking advantage of people with no choices. Pray I never have to go back. I went here to get my inspection done. My car is well maintained and had no problems. They nitpicked the car and found several small things that added up to hundreds of dollars of repairs. I understand that a lot of the inspection is the opinion of the person doing the inspection. I left and took it to another shop that felt all but one of the things they found were fine. The car was able to be fixed for under $100 and saved me hundreds from this shop. I think it seems to be a pattern based on other reviews. I wish I looked here first before going to this shop. I had to call the police to get my car back- they yelled at me on the phone and lost my appointment. They tried to take advantage of the fact that I was a well dressed woman by quoting me $140 for my tire on the phone and they changing their quote to $200 after I dropped off my car. After multiple phone calls while I was at work and extreme disrespect I asked them not to service my car. They then refused to give me my car back unless I paid a courier fee since I wasn't getting my tires changed there. I had to call the police and leave work to get my car back. NEVER EVER TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!!! PS I GOT MY CAR BACK AND DID NOT PAY THE FEE - oh and when I told them I was calling the police they responded - "go ahead and call the police" -- they regretted that decision. read more

Do not trust!! I was new in town and on the suggestion of a coworker took my car to Bon Air Shell because my AC was going on the fritz; would just start blowing hot sometimes without any rhyme or reason. They were very friendly at the front desk and said they were confident that they could look at it for me and figure it out. Ok I say. I schedule a time and drop it off. While it's there they call me at work and say "we've maintenances your AC but also noticed that your car is due for its 100,000 mile routine maintenance. Would you like us to take care of it?" Ok, might as well, I think. I mean, I drive one of those Duracell-battery-like Japanese cars that will run forever if well maintained. Besides, no sense in taking it back for routine maintenance later when they have it there already anyway... So I return after work that day to pick it up and am told everything has been done, AC is running perfectly and the oil change, filters changed, etc. Great! Then I get the bill and somehow it is $1200.00. $1200.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!! O.M.G. I think. How is it that much? That's insane. And most of it is "labor costs"... But, I pay the bill. I'm thinking, the car is now good for another 100,000 miles and I guess that's what was necessary. At least, that's what I told my self. But wait... The very next day the AC starts blowing hot again! This is summer in RVA and the inside of my car, with the AC on, is hotter than the outdoors! I literally just dropped more than a grand on my car, and the AC is still just as disfunctional as before. So I take it back to Bon Air Shell, while it is actively blowing hot air. It takes another 30 minutes of me sitting around waiting and then a mechanic comes out and says NOW they think they found the problem. It's some coil. BUT, it probably won't be cheap to fix. Maybe another +$1000 to fix. And would I like to schedule a time? I considered for a moment, and then came to my senses. Unfortunately though, I had already lost $1200 for what turned out to be only "routine maintenance". Since, after all, they took the money and left the AC just as broken as they found it. Basically, they seemed nice enough initially, but I'd get a second opinion before OKing a diagnosis or work of any significant cost by Bon Air Shell. I have been taking my cars to Bon air shell for three years and have always been pleased until today. I took my car in for inspection and he wanted to charge me thirty dollars to replace the light bulb for the license plate. I told him that it is ridiculous to charge that much for changing a light bulb. He then went and added to the inspection that the steering failed too. This would have cost five to six hundred dollars to fix. I have since taken the car to two other mechanics that said the steering is fine. I think this guy (scott) runs a bad business and does unethical work. I will never take my business there again. read more

Absolutely terrible service. I took my car in for inspection and got a call that it would cost $30 for a tire rotation and $60 to change two light bulbs, which I usually change myself but was unfortunately in a rush and forgot to check them before taking it in. I asked if in order to decrease the price if I could buy the bulbs from them and put them in myself, since it only takes about 5 minutes each, and he just laughed at me. I then asked if he could hold off on doing both so I could check other prices, and he just said he was going to reject it and I need to come pick it up. Extremely rude, and it could have been handled in a much better way. Never doing business with them again. read more
