We didn't get the impression that this place was going to be a sit down and order type of restaurant at all. We were surprised that it was when we walked it for the first time. It's a small place so it gets tight between groups at tables. Their dishes still need work. Their bibimbap was not flavorful at all and more rice than veggies and meat; there should be a good balance of both. Their udon soup was plain and watery as well; the broth needs more flavor. My husband got the mix of mild and spicy 3-piece chicken drums and the server said it's anyone's guess as to how many of which you will get. (Shouldn't they ask the costomer how they would like it then?) So my husband asked for 2 spicy and one mild and ended up with 2 mild and 1 spicy. They ended up bringing out another spicy chicken for him. The salmon avocado was really good and enjoyed that. It wasn't the best experince but I think the place is still working things out. I've passed this place several times over the last couple of months and we finally decided to try it. Gotta say I'm glad we did. The ambiance of the place is cute and cozy with the red booths and the black paint with the white and red writings and pictures on the wall. So now to the good stuff....THE FOOD. Of course I had the fried chicken but I did the combo with half spicy and half soy&garlic. Maaaaannnnnn, let me tell that spicy is nothing to play with lol. It had me sweating with the FIRST bite! Had such a bad experience at Bonchon last night with some friends. The food was good, but they had NO steamed rice available. We ordered at about 715 and waited til 830 for rice. I don't understand why no one told us there wasn't any rice available or why we had to wait for a full batch of rice to be cooked just for 6 orders of rice. I also don't understand why a Korean restaurant didn't have any rice ready?? We kept asking our waiter Gabe about time and ETA for rice and he hustled (and I mean HUSTLED) to make sure we were ok. I honestly felt so bad for the kid because he obviously felt bad and saw that our meal was ruined. The manager however (Victor) was TERRIBLE. He only came to apologize because we asked to speak with him. He never came up to us to check up on us, and he didn't even offer to compensate our meal because we waited for so long. We complained several times but when we looked to see where he was- he was standing at the bar hanging out with his other coworkers. Our waiter Gabe was doing so much to make sure we were ok. To put that cherry on top, the rice was undercooked and a tad crunchy. TBH, it was the least of our worries. Tldr: not coming back here. I've been here a couple of times now. I will give it a 3 because I can see potential. At the beginning, service was slow and hectic. You could tell there was no organization on who had what tables. At times our server would go missing and we would have to ask for someone else. We were excited to eat bonchon bc we had it in Boston for sometime. FLAVOR is on point, BUT the few times I've ordered the drumsticks, it was not cooked all the way. Still saw pink closer to the bone. Not a big fan of the appetizers as everytime we've ordered them, something is wrong (either we never get it or potstickers were frozen still in the middle). They were not busy and we were seated immediately and our waitress took care of our drink order while we looked through the menu. We ordered the lunch size small Combo wings (8) , half spicy half soy garlic for $8. Lunch portion smothered fries for $2.50 and the salmon ball. Our fries came out first and it was hot and delicious and well seasoned. Our wings came out next, piping hot, crunchy, and delicious. We didn't like how big the chicken was, maybe because we were expecting bdub/wing stop size chicken wings, but these wings were huge! We would've preferred the smaller wings. Ever since visiting Korea, I have a terrible weak spot for Korean fried chicken. It simply does not compare to American chicken. My boyfriend and I have visited several times in the past few months and while service can be hit or miss, the chicken never is. We enjoy the soy garlic chicken combo and it is always delicious. That being said, I was disappointed the first time we dined to find out the only white meat served with soy garlic is in the form of chicken strips (which were hardly satisfying, they were very dry and tough). I'm not a huge fan of drumsticks themselves but Bonchon makes them well enough I won't complain that I'm not eating breast meat. Overall, the chicken is crispy, has great flavor, and tastes authentic enough for my Korean boyfriend to cure any feelings of homesickness. With regards to the other dishes served at Bonchon, some of them look very appetizing but the prices are just too high to even venture to try them. Bulgogi, one of my particular favorites, is way overpriced at $16, when you could normally enjoy this dish at many Korean restaurants for half the price. Even though I also feel the fries are slightly too high, they are decent and a must while you are waiting for your chicken to cook. So, go for the chicken! It is good! You might have to wait, but it is worth it. Would I recommend other dishes? Not so much. read more

Regardless of your wing history, Bonchon wings are an experience that should not be missed. There are only two options Soy Garlic and Spicy however neither is a disappointment. All the wings are fried to perfection and either topping (typically the servers will recommend a balance of each in your order) is excellent, chocked full of extremes in flavors (garlic, soy, korean pepper, onion etc.) that are particularly well balanced sufficiently to evoke a response from every taste center for a pleasant experience, The size of the wings are remarkably generous, the service is quite pleasant, efficient and if you are a Bonchon novice, quite instructional.They will typically offer a sample of each flavor which I would encourage you to try however the spicy option is my favorite and regardless of your timidity I would encourage you to at least try once. Have ordered from them several times. The food is always delicious. They've made mistakes on a couple of orders. Last night they left off a coleslaw and also the plastic utensils I requested. I called the restaurant and other leaving a note that the item was missing they offered no solution. I was told to pick up the side next time I went to the restaurant. This new location has only been open for a few days and they haven't even had their grand opening. However, they rock! The food is picture perfect and taste just as great! When the menu said "drums" I thought they were talking about wome itty-bitty drummettes. NO! They are FULL SIZE DRUMSTICKS! Friggin' huge! The wings are just as big! I knew I couldn't eat all of them so I went with a traditional Korean dish called Japchae. It's glass noodles with red peppera, carrots, spinach, mushrooms, and thinly sliced marinated beef stir fried with sesame oil with their signature Bonchon Soy Garlic Sauce. OMG! Sooooooo good! I had a side of Kimchi(fermented cabbage) and a bottle of Soju to wash it down. Bonchon looks like a regular fastfood place but it serves up the best food! I hope they open a location in Dallas soon! Bon Chon is good. I didn't try anything else but the shu mai. And it was not good at all. Steamed mushy. By its ok. We were there for the Bon chon. Let's talk about the service. Our waiter tried his best. I mean it's a soft opening I get it there is gonna be some issues. Most of the servers were all over the place. Flustered and not composed. The hostesses need personalities quick. Wake up drink some coffee something. You're in customer service. Make it count. The owner was polite and took the shu Mai off our bill. He was very apologetic. My advice for him would be to invest in a floor manager to hire and train his staff. The flow and energy needs to be more cohesive. Spend the money and time on that and it will pay off. Some owners are just that jut owners and are not leaders and managers. Just hire the right people and invest in training and it will benefit the business. Talk about unbelievable!.....and not in a good way. My boyfriend I got to restaurant first excited for the fried chicken. We were sat about five minutes of arriving, and as we waited for the rest of the group to arrive. We thought a great start not knowing what was to come. We saw the busser working his butt off as we looked at the busy room. What we also noticed was a lot of tables looking confused. Our waiter came over took our order after a good 10 minutes, which we understood. Our group arrived after 5 minutes of getting our drinks. Our waiter came over and said he would be back. 15 minutes later our waiter disappeared, and a new person took our full order. Drinks came but easily disappeared as it was somewhat hot in the restaurant. We waited another 15 for appetizers. At this point no one refilled half of our drinks, gave us 5 plates, and 4 chopsticks(mind you their was six of us), and to confuse us more it was a different waiter. So about 50-60 minutes have gone by since we had ordered our food, and no one has checked on us( refill drinks, bring us that extra plate, and still not enough utensils). Not until the busser, the one guy who seems to know what he was doing came. We told him what happened, and before he could act the manager who was dressed like he was coming from a cruise ship called him over to drop what we needed so he could flip tables. Now we were getting mad. We were wishing food would come out, but now it was time to think of other options. My boyfriend and I were embarrassed, because we took my sister's in-laws from out of town, and then this happens. My brother-in-law went to go talk to the manager only to be told we were to blame that we didn't try hard enough to get refill on drinks. I was dumbfounded, and then he changes to that their fryer guy never showed up for second shift. Hey I get it! It sucks when staff doesn't show up, but it's the manager(s) on duty to resolve the issue. I only saw the manger micro manage the busser, and not really help (refill waters, deliver food, apologize at tables for wait times, etc). The regular wings, they're tasty, no doubt. But the spicy wings? I like, and can handle spicy food but these are insanely spicy. They were not enjoyable. I want flavor with a slight kick. Not a kick to the face, stomach and ass with snot pouring out of my nose while my taste buds are left in shambles... Anyway, neither my girlfriend or myself were enjoying the spicy wings so, I spoke up. "These wings.... these are just insanely spicy... I can't enjoy these at all... my girlfriend loves Korean wings and she is even having a tough time with this..." My complaint/plea was met with the following words. "Would you like a cup of ranch?" Not really. What I would like is another batch of wings. Or possibly have the bill adjusted? Maybe you could take those wings away because we're not enjoying them, and offer us something entirely different? Anything besides, a bandaid which in this case, was ranch dressing. Again I said, "Well, my girlfriend frequents Korean cuisine and she can't handle these, either." To which the waitress responded, "Well, I'm half Korean and it IS spicy. You're just not used to it." I'm feeling angry by this point. I start eavesdropping as my waitress addresses other tables and other waitresses do the same. I continue to hear, "Oh, it's a soft opening." "It's just a soft opening." Why? Because your place of business is failing and providing awful service, that is the generic excuse? I heard "soft opening" 10+ times when dealing with errors, confrontation, dislike and bad service. Don't open your business if you're not ready to provide the proper experience. Period. The couple dining behind us asked for silverware, which Bonchon apparently, doesn't provide. Ignorant. Don't assume everyone is cultured enough to use chopsticks and don't make a customer feel ashamed or stupid because they're not familiar with using them. As soon as the couple received their food, they immediately asked for to-go boxes and bailed. You could hear the dissatisfaction in their voices and see it in their mannerisms. "Is everything alright?" - Waitress "Yep. I guess." - Me My voice/body language should say enough but she just walks off, apathetic as can be. Manager doesn't bother to come around to the six or seven people dining in this establishment to see how things are going. This place is brand new yet, it feels bleak. It's depressing and uninviting. The staff really helps to drive this point home too, unfortunately. And, be ready for someone to jam some tunes from behind the bar. Loudly and obnoxiously. We had ordered a second dish in addition to the wings that was absolutely atrocious as well. I've forgotten the name but it's really not important. It was a ton of chicken and rice and cost $15+ which is asinine. This place needs to leave their NYC prices at home. This is Katy, TX. People are not keen on paying $15+ for chicken and rice.
