Came here with my family the other weekend. I love bonchon so I was excited we could find a location in Richmond. We all ordered a bunch of food. My husband and I split a medium order of the soy garlic tenders + bulgogi fried rice. The soy garlic tenders were but seem to be lacking sauce. When we asked if we could get more sauce added the waiter said he couldn't do that unless he took the food back and added the sauce on himself (scrimping with the sauce but whatever). It was still pretty good. The other thing I noticed was the chicken was lukewarm when we got it. The bulgogi fried rice was really good but seemed smaller portion then what we normally get. My mother in law had some issues with her food and she didn't get her chicken till well into everyone else's meals (I think they forgot her order?). Regardless not impressed with this location. Lots of issues but atleast the food still tasted good (other locations are better). read more

Place is really nice ! Small parking available. The workers were really nice as well. I did however ordered takoyaki and they were out but it wasn't until after I sat for 25 minutes to find out. But the server did offer to sub it out for something else which is fine. I would say to call in the food first do not order when you get there. I tried to but my call wasn't answered. I was excoted to find Bonchon because I hadn't visited one in a while. When I walked in there were two people at the bar talking. I believe they already had their order. I waited quite a few minutes before someone came from the back to assist me. After I placed my order it seemed to be another long wait. With that said, I would recommend calling ahead as seemed to be the case with some oreders that were bagged and waiting for pickup. I ordered the 10 count (dinner) spicy soy wings, kimchi, and radishes. The chicken was good and spicy. I would have liked a smaller portion since I was the only one eating them. The smaller portion is only available for lunch. The kimchi was pretty good. It too was spicy. The radishes were disappointing. They did not taste pickled at all. How to get the biggest bang for your buck.... come here for happy hour! You can sit at the bar and get $1 chicken strips which is a way better deal than a pack of 10! Who can eat 10 chicken strips! Way too much food but for a dollar 4 strips is a perfect size and then you can get a side of your choice for a discounted rate. This is the way to go if you want chicken!!!!! I find there is a difference in the quality and the experience with some of the dishes when you get them to go. The Japchae is delicious when you have it at the restaurant it comes with a great broth and it's a good portion. I got it to go and it was in a small to go container and no room for that amazing broth to make it with the noodles. It was very disappointing. I still gave them four stars, but they need to work on the take out quality. My advice go for happy hour best bang for your buck! read more

Long story short; Just go to the West Broad location. We've eaten at this location before but decided to give it a second chance. First impression was that the place was entirely empty at 11:30 AM on a Sunday. The one on West Broad always has customers. Not exactly a great sign, but whatever. It was Super Bowl Sunday so we chalked it up to that. We sat ourselves and noticed the partition separating the tables was disgusting. Finger prints and smudges everywhere. On top of that, they had just taped up flyers for "Super Bowl III" (??? Is it 1969?) and no one noticed how gross the partitions were. A little weird. What else is that dirty? But not a dealbreaker. We order our drinks and food, no sweet tea is available at that time. Water will do. In my opinion, the takoyaki is the best app (plus I looove takoyaki). It came out room temperature, almost cold. Takoyaki is supposed to come out blazing, molten hot. We decided to think positively, "Maybe they got complaints about it being too hot and let it sit for a little while?" But why not just tell the table that their food is really really hot? The takoyaki were good, just disappointing. Next, fries came out. At least those were perfect (def recommend those). Then wings came out. I had asked for no sauce on mine (Korean fried chicken is about being crispy, not necessarily the sauce). I realized a little late that sometimes Korean fried chicken needs salt (none on the tables) so we waited for the waiter to come by. It took awhile and my boyfriend had to go find him but we got the salt. I was expecting a salt grinder or a little pinch bowl. But I was given ... a little snowman salt shaker...? ...... .... Moving on.... I have no clue what happened to the radish (we love radish bonchon!). It's like it was just soaked in water, a tiny bit of vinegar and absolutely no salt or sugar. It didn't have any flavor at all. I suppose all the salt they had was being conserved in this tiny snowman. Lastly, we paid and asked to split the bill in half and pay with cards. We got our individual bills and noticed the tip guide at the bottom of the bill wasn't cut in half. Had we not been paying attention, we would've tipped 40% on a lackluster meal. I'm not sure if they're aware their bills aren't cutting the tip% in half for split checks but it definitely comes across a little shady. So if you're looking for sauced chicken wings (but only TWO kinds of sauce...) and fries, this place is pretty good. But there are dozens of American wing places nearby that do it a little better. Why advertise being an Asian themed wing place when all the Asian dishes are awful? Their name is Bonchon, which literally means "Korean side dish" and they screwed up our Korean side dish. You might eat here and think, "Wow, Bonchon as a whole sucks" BUT the one on West Broad knocks everything on their menu out of the park. There's a HUGE difference between the quality of that location and this one. The West Broad location's food is great and the staff is attentive and friendly. So basically, nothing huge went wrong here but a lot of weird/disappointing small things happened. Definitely won't be coming back. I'd rather drive an extra 30 minutes for good Korean chicken or just go somewhere else. read more

I have eaten any many other Bonchon locations before, this is the first time I ordered from this location. The drumsticks and wings are so tiny, they are even smaller than Buffalo Wild Wings. First time visiting Bon Chon in Richmond. Everything was delicious. The menu has been updated and they added a new chicken wing flavor. I ordered wings half soy garlic and sweet crunch. I must say soy garlic is my favorite! I also had the house chicken fried rice and my fiancé had the bulgogi Korean tacos. I love the flavor of the food and the batter used to fry the chicken wings Jessee was our waiter this evening. He has great customer service. Got this to go yesterday. The chicken strips were amazing. We had just missed lunch but they do have a lunch menu to 3pm. Kimchi was okay, something was missing or off though. Ok so I loooove the fried chicken here but I give it 3/5 because everything else is meh. The pork bun slider I've had at another bonchon location in DC and usually love but here the skin on the pork belly was tough - not crispy, and the bun was a little dried out. Unfortunately, my wife and mother did not have a good experience at Bonchon yesterday evening. So much so, that they removed themselves before receiving their food. Although this is atypical of our experiences there, the service was poor nonetheless. My wife and I are regular patrons. However, it was my mother's first visit. She looked forward to eating there, because we have expressed our overall enjoyment with each visit. In addition, by way of recommendation, our friends have eaten there and share our sentiment. The aforementioned are why their experience yesterday was both unexpected and disappointing. After their order was taken and drinks served, they were essentially ignored from that point on by their server. We understand that it was a holiday and busy at times, but my wife and mother observed other tables with larger parties who arrived and ordered after them, receive their orders first and drinks refilled regularly. This was not isolated to one table group. They noticed it again with another table and the same server. My wife asked another server about their order. The other server did not see their server and went to the kitchen to check. My wife was told it would be a little longer. Unfortunately, they had already been there for some time. After explaining everything to the second server, they informed her that they decided to leave. As stated above, their experience was out of the norm, but it happened. Our meals have always been enjoyable with good service. We will try again either for lunch or dinner. Mom is looking forward to the cuisine. I am confident the service will be as expected. read more

I checked out Bonchon (Koreanish) for the first time on Friday for lunch. I'd like to note that it snowed in Richmond and they were shorthanded. The restaurant is nicer looking than I expected and even had a snazzy looking bar. We sat ourselves and it took about 15 minutes for a server to take our order (felt like forever). We had plenty of time to review the menu. Upon reading, I recollected dishes that I enjoyed the year I spent in Korea so long ago. There were some dishes I wanted to try but wanted to hear our server Barbara's recommendation. Her favorite dishes were the Korean Tacos, and the chicken wings. I asked about the Bull Dak, kodoma. She mentioned that they were very spicy and wasn't a fan of spicy. Once she showed me a lunch menu and I went with the BiBimbap with dealers choice meat (spicy chicken). My other choices on the lunch menu were the chicken wings or a wrap for $9.99. Since I checked in on my handy dandy Yelp app I got a few samples of their chicken drums and sauce. After 35 minutes the chicken wings came out (2 spicy, 1 mild). They were good but I can't agree with best in America. The BiBimbap was a collection of rice and vegetables in clay bowl. Love the appearance.. I expected the egg to veggie ration to be higher. I stirred up the mushrooms, onions, red peppers, cucumbers, egg and seaweed slices and dug in.. it was meh..so I added the Red pepper sesame sauce. Better, but still not good. Our server mentioned that some people add 4 of those sauce containers. This gave me the courage to add two more. Now it was flavorful...! I liked how the rice was slightly crispy.. The immediate parking lot is small and limited but take short walk over to the Bed, Bath and Beyond lot and they will likely have open spots. Considering the long wait to order and food to come out, we had a good experience. The food was good but not great. I will be back ti try more dishes. The server was very informative and attentive. I recommend that they vary the lunch menu to offer more authentic Korean dish to try at lunch price. read more

The only reason why this place gets a star because it's BONCHON. Unfortunately, this franchise is definitely not at par with other BONCHONS. I ordered the wings and theirs are the smallest wings I've seen. The soy garlic brush are not as generous as the other Bonchon store we've been to (West Broast, Ashland, Norfolk, Potomac Mills are just some of the bonchons we've been to). Our family had to take out the food because we were so pissed by the owner. I tell you, if you have kids don't bring them in this location. When I get to the restaurant I go in to pickup my order which has been sitting on the bar for 20 minutes. They say do you want them to remake the order? Today was the first time my wife and I ordered from Bonchon. My brother in law recommended this place as it is one of his favorite places to eat in DC. When placing the order online the online site was very finicky when it came to inputting credit card information. When we went to pick up our family sized order the lady delivered only half our our order. Thank god we checked that we were missing 36 wings. Instead of admitting to it, they swapped out another order's 36 wings and gave us old and cold wings. I cannot recommend this location at all. This is my story. I've been to bonchon in richmond, broad and Midlothian several times and enjoy the chicken wings, drumsticks and strips. I went there last week and ordered strips for take out. I got home, opened them and they were tiny, soggy junk!! I contacted the bonchon website and they confirmed with photos that I was ripped off, but since it's a franchise, they've got nothing. So, I only lost ten bux but I don't want anyone else to get ripped off or them to keep ripping people off. I assume if they are serving 1/4 sized portions now that are soggy and mealy that there could be other things wrong. So, in short, give bonchon broad a chance , but steer clear of bonchon Midlothian. The problem was they were kind of dry, not much sauce on them like they usually are. I've ordered from other locations in Northern Va when I lived up there. Not sure if the quality is changed or what. Last time I ordered for take out from this location, they forgot my order of fries but at least the food was better.
