I must be the only guy who didn't come here for the chicken wings. For those who don't know, bonchon (or banchan, as I know it) are the side dishes that accompany a good Korean BBQ. Since I love Korean food, I figured I'd go here and give it a try. I was somewhat disappointed to see lots of chicken wing kinda stuff, and very little actual Korean food. Still, I figured I'd give it a go and see what they could do with the bibimbap. Turns out that my amigo and I were the only ones actually eating Korean food in the place - everybody else was chowing down on chicken wings or chicken drumsticks or some form of chicken fried up and dipped in a sauce. But still, the bibimbap: It was good. Surprisingly good. They do it up right in a smoking hot stone bowl, with a raw egg on top waiting to be mixed in and cooked. Great flavors. I got mine with bulgogi. It comes with a red pepper sauce that I used liberally. I had to ask for soy sauce, but they brought it with no problem. The entire bowl was twelve bucks, and it filled me up more than a little bit. I didn't need to eat much dinner that night. The restaurant was clean and neat. Noise level was low. They've got about six different TVs in the place, which annoyed me a bit. I'm not a "TV while you eat" kind of guy. Still, the food was more than good enough to make up for it. This location has degraded itself. We love Bonchon chicken and we always order the salmon ball. Today, they apparently made cut backs and now they make the ball, but top it with the salmon. The salmon ball used to be 100% salmon meat enclosed. Sorry, finding a new location. read more

Disappointing and gets worse each time I go. I'm done with this place. Don't waste your hard earned cash, people. Certainly not worth the exorbitant prices. Dried out, old, no flavor chicken coated in sauce. 10 pieces for $25 + tax. I could have went to Walmart, got take out chicken, doctored it in ANY type of sauce, and would have been a lot happier. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only Yelper, who had a bad experience at this location. This was the first Bonchon m I've ever come to, and I will not be going back to any. The food was average, so jap chae was too greasy and watery. My daughter and I were two of 4 customers during a Saturday lunch time, we came around noon. Our server took a long time to get to us apologized, but then gave us no attention after he brought our food. I was just surprised by a lack of attentiveness. I still left above %15 tip based on my own principles. From now on, I'm only eating Korean food in Richmond at New Grand Mart or the food my momma brings when she visits. read more

You wouldn't believe how excited I was to hear that I wouldn't have to travel 35 minutes north to go to Bon Chon in the RVA. Upon hearing that there would be a Southside location, I patiently waited months for the location to finally open. Then my work schedule picked up and prevented me from going to the restaurant sooner than I anticipated. But last week I was able to order pick up from BonChon. How did my experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Timing- I placed my order over the phone and was told that it would be ready in 10-15 minutes. I initially thought that there's no way that they could double fry the chicken and it be ready in that short time period. But instead of questioning it any further, I headed to the restaurant and my order was ready when I arrived. The Not So Good: Quality of Product- Visiting this restaurant made me appreciate the 25 minute wait that the Broad Street announces as they cook their food to order. While the wait is long, the chicken comes out hot, fresh and mighty tasty. From the Midlothian Tnpk location, I ordered 10 wings with rice and the food was lukewarm at best. This location's chicken wings were also noticeably smaller than the Broad St.'s location too. I don't know much about this restaurant, but if I Were a betting man, I would say that my wings and rice were already cooked and sitting on a heater somewhere. When I took a bite into my wings, they were somewhat dry and the crispiness of the chicken was beginning to harden. The rice was not north pole cold but it was a scoach below lukewarm. Overall- While the restaurant is a few minutes away and takeout orders are completed with ease, I personally appreciate a great product that I have to wait for versus a mediocre product that I can get quick, fast and in a hurry. I would still give this restaurant another chance because its Bon Chon after all. But for right now, I would have to give the new Bon Chon THREE STARS. read more

Food was nothing as expected... TTEOKBOKKI didn't have rice cakes and if so they were so overcooked that they'd disappeared in the soup and Spicey sauce... The owner Netti refused to remove or discount meal even though she advised chef had over cooked meal. Owner advised it cost her too much money to cook items with the ingredients they call for, so therefore she couldn't discount or remove dishes from menu. The food took 40minutes to come out. Walked in and there was only one person serving customers (I'm assuming the manager based on his attire). When we arrived we were one of only two tables seated, there were three additional parties seated after us. It took about 15 before our drink order was taken and then another THIRTY minutes before he came back for our food order. To be clear, our order was taken and placed in the kitchen before the other three tables who were seated, yet after another thirty minutes we were the last table to be served food. We ordered bibimbap, pork buns and zucchini fries, all of which were split between the other tables before we got our order. Then our order was brought out in pieces, the zucchini ended up as pickles, and we had to remind him of the rest of our order. In the end, he comped the zucchini (after I told him not to have the kitchen make it because we didn't want to wait another 20 minutes), he comped a drink and the pickled radish. The same person taking orders was handling food without washing his hands, couldn't decide if he wanted to wear his mask or not, and didn't apologize until we asked for the check. 100% a disappointing experience and we won't be back. If you can't staff your location adequately, you shouldn't be open for dine-in service. read more

This was my second time going to this location, unfortunately both cases were mediocre. The second visit was a couple days ago, of course during the pandemic. I firmly believe in supporting restaurants during this time as I know it's a struggle. My family and I order carry out to avoid the inside crowd. Upon arriving to Bonchon we checked in as instructed for our curbside order. We were shocked to not only see what was a group of 30 people who were having a birthday party but no one was wearing a mask despite the sign on the door stating to. We saw ONE PERSON and that was the waitress. The bartender and several other employees down to the lady who brought our food out were not wearing one. She called herself "distancing" by standing inches from our door. Absolutely ridiculous! After a 30 min wait after they couldn't find our food (was in the wrong section), no mask wearing by patrons or employees and the food we will not be returning to this particular location unfortunately. read more

This is NOT bonchon. I don't know what happened. We went awhile ago and it was good but this time it was terrible. The chicken was not the original bonchon recipe. The flour wasn't rice flour and the chicken itself was over cooked, super dry and hard. We ordered half and half which should of came with spicy and soy garlic sauce. But no sign of gochujang taste at all. The worst part was the rice. It was a travesty. Bonchon is Korean and the rice was some uncle Ben type of rice. Not the standard Korean/Japanese style sticky rice. It was brownish in color and had a weird smell like it was cooked in a plastic bag. We didn't eat anything and left. If I could give this less than one star I would. We picked up our order on time, the coleslaw was voided from the order because there were no containers. The boneless wings were removed from the order without notifying me. And the chicken was the absolute worst chicken I've ever had from bonchon. I've been to the one in Henrico and am always pleased with the food and service. This was my first time at this location and it was a very bad experience. I was with a party of 3, quickly seated. Waitress was nice, but after she took our orders we never saw her again unless we called her over for a refill etc. The place was not packed at all, everyone else had their food already and only one other person came inside. However it took way too long for them to cook our food. I feel like we were forgotten about because by the time we got our fries, they were very cold and did not taste good. All our meals tasted like they were cooked in the same grease, they all had a strange flavor mixed with other peoples orders I'm assuming. This is one of my favorite places to eat and I've never had this happen at the other locations. I hope they get better cooks or hire more staff to help out. I've had this issue before, but try to put it in the past because I enjoy eating at this restaurant. But the last few times that I have been in it has been nothing but a negative experience between the food being incorrectly, prepared or between the terrible service. As an avid Bonchon lover, I was really looking forward to grabbing Bonchon for dinner Friday night. I really love the locations up in NOVA so I decided to try the one in Midlothian again. It ended up being a big mistake. From the moment we walked in, it was evident they were very understaffed. There was a sign that said to seat ourselves, so we did. No one proceeded to give us menus so we had to take menus from another table. One waiter did end up noticing and taking out orders and that waiter is the reason why this place isn't getting the 1 star that it deserves. We ordered the 10 piece strips half & half instead of the 20 piece because we usually can't finish the 20 strips. What came out was the tiniest, most minuscule piece of chicken, I've ever seen. As someone in a previous review has posted pictures, it is the size of your palm and about 1 cm thick. The portion was incredibly tiny and pathetic. We could have easily finished 20 due to how small they were but we were not trying to pay $20+ for chicken that small. The previous reviewer said they contacted corporate Bonchon and even they agreed the chicken was a ripoff. If even corporate says it's a rip off, that's saying something. In addition, I've noticed the spice level for the hot flavoring varies depending on location. Some aren't spicy at all, some are spicy. The ones in NOVA have a good amount of spice. The ones here are so INSANELY spicy that it leaves you and your body feeling like you're dying. It's comparable to an experience of going through hell and back inside and out. I also overheard a table next to us complaining about requesting something not to be added to their food but it came out with it anyway and the chefs decided rather than ask, to just put it in there and if they didn't want it, they would deduct it from their bill. The family then had to order something else but at that point, their whole family's meals had already come out so they would have to wait until that person's new meal was done. Absolutely absurd. Stopped by this Asian fusion Mecca on a sunny Virginia afternoon. Had a cold IPA and ordered some delectable pollo for the road trip back to Chesterfield....what a find. After living two years of my middle aged life on the Korean Peninsula as US service member I did develop a love for the Korean take on the bird. A co-workwr of mine, swore on the chicken at this place to I had to try it. When I tell you, MIND BLOWN...... I thought my Grandma had the prize cup for fried chicken but Grandma needs to hang the apron up after tasting BonChon Chicken. I tried the spicy drums( too spicy for me) and my fav garlic soy drums. The radish stuff on the side(forgot the name, my bad) is disgusting and it smells awful. I opt for coleslaw instead. My husband wants to eat here every other night, however, those prices are a bit too steep. The wait isnt horrible and the product is consistently lip smacking. I tried the one in Mechanicsville one day and was veeeeeeery disappointed. The chicken didnt taste the same AT ALL. I'll never go back to Mechanicsville, but Midlothian is where its at! Dropped in to BonChon on a Monday night and the place only had about 4 customers. We order the Beef Stir fry dish & some Asian soup noodle dish. Ten minutes after we were told that they did not have any more noodles for the soup dish. So in stead we ordered the Spicy Chicken Tacos. Food took quite a while to come out and the waiter was very apologetic. Not sure if the cooking staff could handle 4 tables orders! "They're backed up in the kitchen" Tacos were good & very lite. Beef stir fry was OK... kind of bland/no spices flavor for a Korean dish. Not sure the value was very good for the food we received. read more

I would not recommend at all. If you are forced to go have the wings and order extra sauce. The wings would have been great if they were tossed in sauce not just drizzled with it. Super crunchy!! We ordered bulgogi, wings, seasoned zucchini fries, and bibimbop. The bulgogi was so salty my husband could not eat it. Zucchini was a little over cooked but still good. And my rice in my bibimbop was burnt. If you ever burnt rice you know that stink is awful. Even had a broken piece of plastic in the coke slaw. Just a horrible experience. The service was great tho. Despite the low review of this BonChon, we decided to try it anyway since we're in the area, and really don't feel like driving elsewhere for lunch. We had small ordered of half/half wings, Bulgolgi, Chicken Katsu, and Spicy Chicken Wrap. The wings size, is ok. The spicy ones, are spicy! Coming from me, that's spicy since I can tolerate spice up to 50K SHU. So yea, my kinda wings! Woohoo! I also like the breading on wings, it's super crispy even with sauce drizzled on it! The soy garlic isn't overly garlicky, and mildly sweet. Good combo after the tingling of tongue after the spicy wings! Also, if you checked in, you'll get 3 free wings. Just show the offer to your server. All others items we had, it's all right. Nothing extraordinary. The rice is really dry! Only thing good here is the wings. The service, is great! Our server Barbara, is really friendly, and attentive. She gladly drizzled more sauce on my wings as I find it not enough sauce, gave us extra pickled dishes as she noticed how we ate ours clean, and promptly refilled our drinks when it's running low without being asked! The food was tasty and just as good as the west end location but the atmosphere is lacking. We ordered tea but could not identify what exactly was in the cup so we sent it back our server later said something was wrong with the machine. Hmmm . The portions are also very shareable which is great if you're getting food for you and others. But by then I just pushed my uneaten wings to the side . We went for dinner on a Friday evening around 7:00 PM and found that the restaurant was not crowed. This was a total shock because I have been to other locations and they were usually crowded. Anyway, we obviously had no wait to be seated and our server. Zachery was at our table in about five minutes to take our drink order. We had the Korean Tacos, sweet wings and the spicy wings and everything was totally delicious. The wings were not overly breaded and did not have excess breading around the meat. The tacos were well flavored with a hint of heat that made me lick my fingers. I am only giving 4 stars because our server forgot part of our meal and we had to remind him and he was very slow on refilling our beverages. Other than that, it was a great place to go eat and socialize with friends. I did notice that the bar area had a good crowd and the drinks that people were drinking looked like drinks that you would find on a fancy cruise ship. I have been to BonChon in Northern Virginia numerous times and have been blown away by the quality of the wings. The spicy wings are always very spicy (in a good way). My son has been begging me to take him. Went today to the Midlothian location and was completely disappointed. The wings tasted dry like they had been sitting in the back for a long time, had no flavor, and the spicy wings were barely spicier than the soy wings. The service was slow and terrible. Waited 5 minutes before someone came to table to greet us, and there was only one other table in the place with people. Ordered a beer and ginger ale. Had to ask 3 times for the drinks before they arrived, which happened to be after the wings showed up. Complete disappointment. Luckily I have been happy with BonChon in NoVa because if this was my first time it would also be my last time. read more
