To say that you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of pizza options here would be an understatement. We're talking pizzas that range with the traditional Italian toppings to those that you'd swear you only find in Asia (like octopus?!) Literally took me a good five minutes to finally decide which pizzas to order after gazing longingly at all my options. Bonci's pizza reminds me of Detroit style pie-crust pizza with the emphasis on both the breading and the toppings. I loved that you're able to eyeball how much pizza you want and are charged according to how much in weight the pizza ended up being. Needless to say, hungry fellas will need to restrict themselves before they end up ordering the entire table. I ordered their Potato Rosemary and Parmigiano w/ Fried Onions. For less than a pound of pizza, it came out to about $15. Both pizzas are baked before they're actually served to you so it keeps that freshness. Really enjoyed the two pizzas I had but wasn't completely wowed by the potato rosemary option. However, the mushroom made up for it completely. The Parmigiano was definitely the winner with the fried onions sprinkled on top. I'm glad I was able to try this spot with Nick M. because it definitely shows the prospects of how far pizza has come in this great city. So glad I made it in to Bonci's!!! My first time ever eating Roman style pizza.It was really good.So many options to choose from.Many of them are vegan.As a native Chicagoan and foodie I can't help but feel honored that world renowned chef Gabriele Bonci decided to open up his first ever U.S location right here in Chicago.He could have opened up first in ANY other U.S city but he chose CHICAGO!!! I love Bonci! I came here on a Sunday at 11AM, which was perfect because the pizza was fresh and just being put out. I can't believe I've been missing out on Bonci all this time!! The pizza was amazing; there are a lot of different options and it's awesome because you can mix and match and choose the size of your piece (width). Apparently the pizzas rotate and they don't always have the same flavors. I tried the potato, caramelized onion, and salmon pizza. Once you pick your slices, they throw them in an oven and heat them up for you. The crust gets super crispy, which I LOVE. My favorite was by far the salmon pizza, but the other flavors were great too. After the pizza, I tried the pistachio gelato. The gelato is creamy and delicious, and has chunks of pistachio in it. Yum! What a great way to finish off the meal. FYI the interior is a little small so I wouldn't recommend coming here with a large group. I loved the atmosphere though and the employees were super friendly! They explained how their pizza was different and helped with any questions I had. When I first visited Italy a couple of years ago, I discovered the amazing concept of "pizza al taglio", where pizza is cut to the customer's preference and then sold by weight. There are so many different flavors and the bread/crust is so airy and light. When I came back to Chicago, I was disappointed that I couldn't get to enjoy this style of pizza anymore...but now, that problem is solved because of Bonci!! Bonci, located in the West Loop neighborhood of the city, is exactly what I have been missing so much from Italy! Their pizza al taglio is spot-on and all their flavors (the arrabbiata is so tasty!!) are impeccable. Walking into their shop really made me feel like I was back in Italy - the vibe is cool and casual. Plus, the service is fast and I love how they top your pizza off with fresh parmigiano, olive oil, and basil after being toasted perfectly in the oven. This is hands down the best pizza in the city! Stopped by on a whim, super quick and easy. They snip slices with scissors and then heat it up. The slice is then cut into smaller pieces, which makes it perfect to swap with friends. Crust was crisp and perfect. Ricotta, zucchini, and lemon slice was light and delicious, more lemon and ricotta than zucchini. Anchovy and burrata was salty and creamy. Would recommend trying both. Bonci is great, but a bit different pizza experience than the average place by the slice. They have a ton of flavors to choose from, all in sheet pans. They'll cut you a slice and you choose how wide you'd like it to be. Pizza is charged by the pound, so you can really pick exactly the right amount for your hunger level. If you're taking Bonci to go, you can ask them not to heat it and give you heating instructions for home. Just okay. Actually I went to the Rome location and it was outstanding. One of the best mind blowing pizzas I have ever had. So much so that we walked 2.5 miles to eat at the Chicago location because Bonci is the Michael Angelo of pizza in Rome. Unfortunately, in Chicago, it was just okay. A tad better than papa johns. But I would say it was on par with Lou's. Potato pizza was good and interesting Meatball pizza was made with fresh meatballs. Yum. Mushroom pizza was the worst tasting pizzas Salmon and burrata was just okay. Chicken Parmesan pizza takes the cake. The best flavor. The crust is so amazing crispy. I had been to Bonci USA at their (now closed) Wicker Park location (a year or two ago). That was my first visit and I liked what I had. This, being the only location now in Chicago, was my second visit. Bonci USA is a Rome-based Italian import pizza shop that serves a delicious and unique variety of pizzas known as Pizza al Taglio, "which refers to the sturdy rectangular trays that the pizza gets baked in." (Steve Dolinsky). Bonci pizzas with its unique and distinctive toppings are scissor-cut slices and sold by weight. The pizza pricing is by the pound. So you can have as little or lot as you want. Basically, the ordering of pizza slices is similar to the Taylor st. based Pompeii restaurant (but that's as far as the comparison goes). You choose the flavor variety of your liking, tell the staff personnel attending you roughly how much you want and they will cut those slices for you and weigh them. Then, based on whether you are eating the pizza right away or taking it to go, they will warm it up for you Or give you reheating directions for eating at home. I ordered their Chicken Pesto and Roasted Bell Pepper & Buffala pizzas. Both the pizzas were on point. The quality of the food is great. My favorite was the Chicken Pesto. It was loaded and quite flavorful. The unique thing I liked about this pizza was that its crust was crispy and light, yet sturdy to hold the number of different toppings depending on the type of pizza who are having. I saw quite a bit of variety with interesting toppings. It was hard to narrow down to the ones I really wanted. I liked everything about this place with the exception of the price point. The pizzas are pricey. There is no question about that. Some pizzas are priced $14.99/ lb (and some even slightly higher). So depending on how much you order, the cost can add up significantly. You don't necessarily get the best bang for your buck as you are paying more for less food. However, you are getting some of the best quality food, and a unique, imported Roman pizza for that matter which is unique to Chicago. I gave this place five stars (intentionally not factoring in the price point) based on the uniqueness and variety of the pizzas, its good imported quality and the nice service I received. Despite my reservations about the price point, it doesn't change the fact that Bonci USA is a gem among the best pizza places in Chicago. Check them out. read more

This venue however does not replicate that magic, much to my disappointment. The pizzas were greasy and overladen with cheese. The supplì (classic and ragù) were not very flavorful and almost burnt. So far I've tried -burrata basil: 8.5/10 (so fkin good life fr) - pepperoni: 8/10 (pepperoni quality was superb) - sausage mushroom: 7/10 - lemon ricotta zucchini: 8/10 (great breakfast Za) - pepperoni sausage sport peppers: 8/10 (rotational- so good with the contrast of salty from Roni and spice from the pickled peppers) West loop where every lunch is $20-30 desperately needed this joint. May or may not have wandered in here with drunchies after The Aviary. But, my friend's - who has been to Rome - eyes light up when she saw the variety and the fact that it was sold by pound. "Just like in Rome!" she excitedly told me. I've never been to Rome, but apparently Bonci was featured in the late Anthony Bourdain's The Layover (RIP). We were so excited about all the different unique options. The gal working was super understanding and nice about us wanting to try "a little bit of a lot." The ragu just had a phenomenal rich and hearty depth - like it had been stewing for 24hrs with love. *Ricotta with Black Pepper, Lemon Peel - The ricotta was so fluffy! How! It was a nice textural contrast with the crispy crust..and great acid from the lemon peel - *Spicy Eggplant & Octopus - TBH, octopus tentacles freak me out. Love the concept of this place, rotating pizzas based on seasonal topping and produce that's available. Scissor cutting so you can choose how big you want your pizza which for someone like me who loves a bunch of different topping is AMAZING because I can get thin slices of multiple types. The crust is the right amount of chewy and crunchy and the toppings are always of great quality. The price is a little higher as they charge based on weight but for what you are getting, it's pretty worth it in my opinion! The staff is always super nice and you can get it warmed up or not. I'm en speechless. I've never had any pizza like this. I was traveling through town from Indianapolis and wanted to see what the hype was about. I grabbed 4 pretty big pieces of pizza and the total came to a little over $20! Okay so first off, I had no idea had to order so I asked the lady and she told me how to order and how they box it and that they'll warm up the pizza for you and basically gave me all the deets. Bonci serves some up awesome pizza in the West Loop. I expected it to be Detroit style from the pictures, but the dough is like a thin, light focaccia with an amazingly crispy bottom. You buy it by the pound which was unique, and the staff is really nice so you can get as large or small a slice as you'd like. I tried the sausage & blueberry, the meatball ragu & the vegan arrabbiata. All were fantastic! Easy to tell the ingredients are high quality & the toppings are all flavorful & fresh. OK. So since shelter in place or whatever we are calling it (I split my time between Chicago and LA), COVID-19 comfort food is either pizza or Greek food (pastichio or moussaka). This review is about pizza. Came here after CAC's Fulton Market walking tour. It is pricey but for the $40 we spent and our eating habits, our pizza choices amounted to one dinner and two lunches for two adults. Most options were $12.99/pound and each individual portion seemed to run me about $8. I took home 3 arancinis (they call it something else) and the following pizzas: Beef meatball- hubby liked it. I didn't try it yet; pork sausage and mushroom- as supposed to be mine but WAY TOO SPICY; Margharita- good...would get again; Mushroom Rosa- yummy, and finally MY FAVORITE... Potato Mozzarella. We're definitely going back to try others and get the potato mozzarella and mushroom rosa. FWIW- 3 minutes in Air Fryer at 375 degrees was plenty hot and crispy. It's clean and small. Very good Roman style pizza. First visit, got the arrabiatta, salmon/burrata, spicy eggplant, and soppressata. All of them were good, although none of them really blew me away -- gun to my head, I think the soppressata or arrabiatta were my favorites, although in both cases I wanted a somewhat stronger tomato flavor. The salmon burrata was also great and less weird than it sounds -- sometimes combining two amazing things just works. I was less crazy about the spicy eggplant -- I thought it was good, but the eggplant alone wasn't enough to carry the slice. Would definitely want to try something like the meatball next time, which was essentially like the margherita but with the meat as well -- this looks saucier and somewhat cheesier than the ones I tried, which is maybe what I'm looking for. Of course, that is basically just American-izing it to some extent, and maybe that's the point -- I'm still waiting to have a real moment with Roman-style pizza, and perhaps it's because I just prefer American / NYC style more, and it's similar enough where it suffers from that comparison. read more
