Their sandwiches are some of the best I've had in my life. Their focaccia bread is amazing. However, their system is a complete mess. It should not take 45 minutes to make a sandwich. People get served out of order, orders are dropped, the workers are walking on top of each other. Completely inefficient. I WANT to love this place but I'm finally writing my review after visiting this store 50+ times. I'm so disappointed and honestly grossed out by this establishment. If you take the time to look around everything is filthy including the walk-in door, shelves and deli. The meat department smells horrible... I do not trust anything coming out of there. Last week I bought almond milk that had a month to go before it's expiration date yet it was chunky and sour when I opened it at home making it obvious they don't put their shipments immediately into the cooler. The staff seems to be careless throughout the store. When I go on the weekends the bakery is always out of all the good cookies. Highly recommended! I was on a quest to find a bag of rye flour when I stumbled upon Boney's in Coronado. What a find! Yes, I found rye flour, Bob's Red Mill Light Rye. And I grabbed it. I would have preferred Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain Dark Rye, but beggars can't be choosers, and I had visited all the supermarkets in downtown San Diego with no luck. Walking around the store, I was really impressed with the variety of organic and natural offerings. As I cruised by the meat case, I saw prime sirloin and colossal prawns. To rebut some of the criticisms I read in previous reviews, I bought the package of flour at retail, no markup. In that sense, Boney's is not pricey. You get what you pay for. Next customer service. The clerk not only helped me find the flour, but when I got in line to check out, they opened another register and called me to check out quick. Another plus for this market, plenty of free parking. After attempting to call in deli orders and being placed on eternal hold 3x on 3 different weekdays at 3 different times ranging from mid-morning to early afternoon, I just spoke to a manager who told me 'Sorry, the owner leaves (sometimes as early as 8) and she's the one who answers the phone'. Really?? I'm standing here watching 6 deli employees, some of whom are working their tails off while others discuss the high price of airline tickets. So Ms Boney... I've been a customer of Boney's for a long time, and I had always liked shopping there. But yesterday was a very different story. I could find no way to send an email message to them, so hopefully a store manager will see this and take action. I had bought an expensive bag of frozen meatballs, but when we got home they were not in the bag. So I drove back to the store. The checkout person saw me, and said "you forgot your meatballs." I didn't forget them at all, she forgot to put them in my bag! She didn't apologize. This left me mad and irritated. I spent an extra hour needlessly and didn't even get an "I'm sorry." read more

My friend and I wanted to try their fresh smoothies. I wanted the berry smoothie without the banana because I'm allergic to bananas. I asked if they could do that and the gal said yes but she will charge me an extra $2. I'm still trying to process this...I will be charged $2 to NOT have a banana and they get to pocket a banana? Does this make sense? It's a freshly made smoothie so I don't see what the big deal is to not include a banana. Plus I'm allergic...it's not like I was trying to be difficult on purpose. Jamba Juice always substitutes whatever I need them to because of my allergies. On top of that they'll add ingredients to round out the taste for whatever ingredient I can't have. And they never fail to tell me that if I don't like it they'll try something else. Now that's customer service! read more

This place is the greatest, a bit pricey but for what it has to offer well worth it. My only qualm is that the first time I came here to buy essential oils I was charged $55 for lavender, I thought oh my gosh, I can never afford these. I came back a few months later to buy different oils to stock myself up and realized there had been a glitch in the system. The lavender could only have been $20 TOPS if I bought more than one. I didn't ask for my money back, I had no proof that it had ever happened. But I mentally noted the issues. We were looking for a quick picnic lunch to take to the beach and Boney's was the perfect place to load up on good snacks! The deli was very busy at lunchtime - we ordered sandwiches to-go and had to wait about 20-30 minutes. It was a long wait but the sandwiches were delicious. Fresh ingredients!! We've been satisfied customers for years, unfortunately we have had two recent bad experiences with Boney's meat department, specifically their "best quality" ground beef, which calls for a warning. Leanest ground beef is not supposed to reduce by half in volume after rendering so much fat that we had to drain the grill pan mid-cooking (and it stunk up the kitchen). We used to be able to count on Boney's meats; not sure if they have changed suppliers, but this is a problem which needs to be addressed quickly. read more

The sandwiches at the deli are amazing, however, the wait is unacceptable. We just spent 30 minutes in the store waiting for our sandwiches and once we were given our sandwiches they told my friend they ran out of chicken for hers. Which means they didn't even start making a sandwich that was ordered 30 minutes prior or notify us that they ran out. I also don't know if they actually ran out of chicken or if they just didn't want to make this particular sandwich because one of the worked yelled to another employee, "Someone else needs to take care of the chicken parm sandwich because I'm not doing it," and then he walked away. So unprofessional and I am embarrassed about the service considering my friend is visiting from Australia and this makes American service look bad. read more

I want to give this place more stars, because the sandwiches are always good and I love the market itself, but how long does it take to make a sandwich?! Seriously! The last few weeks we've come maybe 4 times and every single time we've had to wait almost 20 minutes for two sandwiches. When there has been maybe one other ticket on the line? It's ridiculous. They used to be so much quicker and a lot of us who work on base have stopped coming because of the time it takes them to make sandwiches now. It's just ridiculous. I got the veggie wrap with added turkey. It was AMAZING. Also the wrap was the size of my head and only $4.95. Highly recommend for sandwiches . I am giving it a 3 star because the service was extremely slow and there were at least 6 people working which didn't really make sense. I probably could have hunted a turkey in the wild and made it a wrap in the time it took to make my sandwich. If you can call ahead I would recommend doing that. read more

This review is strictly for the costumer service in the Deli. It is filled with younger people who don't care about their jobs and could care less about the costumers. They are often rude and act like you're an inconvenience when you give them your order. The girls usually making the sandwiches are too busy gossiping with one another to make your sandwich in a timely manor. I also think they should be wearing hair nets since they like to wear their hair down with their hats. I've been coming here for a few months on my lunch but lately the service has gotten worse and worse. I don't think I'll be returning anytime soon. My advice is save your money and go somewhere with better costumer service or don't buy from the Deli during lunch time. read more

I enjoy shopping at Boneys and products and produce are very good. The deli has good meats, but the service in the deli is really poor. I absolutely love this place and the deli food/sandwiches! I have on gripe and it's a big one. While their sandwiches are amazing, the deli staff is horrible!! Most of them are on the young side and have a nonchalant, 'couldn't care less about their job or the customer' attitude. They seem annoyed and inconvenienced when a customer would like to place an order and then take 4x as long as necessary to make the sandwich. Sloooowwww!! They could easily fix this problem with more thoughtful hiring and more consistent oversight and management. An Oasis of gluten free food! A gem of a grocery store. Finally a small grocery store with a massive gluten free range! They have GLUTEN FREE DONUTS in the frozen section! (It's been tens years or so since i've had a donut, so i'm still excited by the fact that Boney's carries gluten free donuts) I love Udi's gluten free bread, also in frozen isle. I prefer my bread fresh, but Udi's is quite lovely (I always toast my GF bread). My husband prefers his food organic, so they are well stocked in this department. I thought when I moved to Coronado I'd use Boney's as a place to buy specialty items, but it has become the place where we do the majority of our grocery shopping. The fresh produce is reasonably priced. The gluten free food is expensive (but so is every other super market and grocery store i've ever visited). Their trio Hummus is DIVINE! Great customer service in the supplements and personal care isles. A customer service person is always around to answer questions. If they don't know, they find someone who does. Some of the grocery items are more expensive than the big supermarket chains e.g. I've noticed their Kombucha drinks are significantly more expensive than Vons (I can't remember the numbers off hand, sorry). I love Boney's. They have the best produce and the best prices. I believe they use more localized farmers, thus they don't mark them up as much as Vons and Albertsons. (and they just taste better) The cheeses and meat and fish dept. are incredible. Everything is so fresh and the displays very appealing. I get lunch to go and buy all my dinner items there. The cashiers and baggers are delightful people who I enjoy seeing and talking to each time I come in. My kids love the fresh cookies, muffins and breads as well..not to mention the deli sandwiches! My favorite grocery store. It is kind of like an OLD time trader Joes, before Trader Joes branded absolutely everything Trader bleh-bleh-bleh! Great old fashioned butchers market. And well done foods at the other end for making a quick and healthful meal. Excellent weekly specials. Their selection is sort of lacking and I can't see myself ever doing any real grocery shopping... but I do like to stop in once in a while after work and pick up some novelty item. They carry dark chocolate with chili pepper and a bourbon vanilla cream soda which is the best tasting thing in the world. If they stopped carrying this I probably would never come back. read more

This review is based solely on customer service. I'm having a dinner party this evening and was looking for some fresh, wild fish. I decided one the best places to go in the area (far South Bay) would be Boney's, even though I knew it would probably be over-priced (as many of their items are) but that's what you get when they are the only option for Whole Foods/Trader Joe's-type place in the area!! Anyway, I called to ask which WILD fish they had for sale today and the guy on the phone responded that he "didn't know off the top of his head." That was it. No offer to check for me, nothing. Let's be honest-it's not like he had to trek across a store the size of Costco. This place is a "market" and it's super tiny. Also, it's not going to be a long list as many of their fish selections are farm-raised, not wild. This isn't the first time we've had experiences with the deli/sandwich counter employees being lazy, ignoring customers and just having their own conversations. One time I ordered 6+ sandwiches (again, wayyyy over-priced...don't get the veggie wrap-it's just lettuce and Italian dressing) and they ended up sitting on the counter because when they were finished, the employee just put them aside, neglecting to call out "did anyone order 6 sandwiches? They're finished!" Instead, after about 20 minutes or more we said "Ummm, excuse me, are those our sandwiches sitting over there?" And they responded "oh, yeah, we thought they were for pick-up." Good thing we asked! Not only did they lose a sale based on poor customer service, they just lost a customer--for good. I'll drive out of my way from now on. read more

Boney's is a great little market! Maybe a bit pricey, but in the natural food market I expect to pay more for decent quality. They have a nice selection of vegetarian/vegan food, including pre-made food. Their sweet potato salad is wonderful, as is their black bean salad. They also sell Dudley's bread, which I like. Came here on a sunday afternoon, and it wasn't crowded at all. Maybe due to the pristine weather.....I don't know but I liked it. They are smallish with upscale-ish offerings. Prices don't seem too expensive, produce and meats seemed reasonable. The staff was friendly. I will definetly come back here to shop. FYI it is directly across the street from Coronado brewing company. If you go on sundays, CBC growler fills are only $5....if you are into that sort of thing. read more
