The absolute best burger I have EVER had! I ate the Southern Belle and the combination of pimento cheese, grilled jalapeños and fire and ice pickles made every bite of the burger and bacon a delight! So happy to have a new dining option in downtown Lynchburg! The menu gives lots of options from salads to their amazing gourmet burgers. We ordered the onion rings as an appetizer and they were hot, crispy with good presentation and a spicy dipping sauce. The burgers we ordered were big and so tasty! My boyfriend I tried this restaurant last night. When we first walked in we were greeted right away. We only had to wait about 5 min for a table which was not bad at all because I requested a booth. The food that we ordered was pretty good, I only have a few issues.... the burgers were not well seaoned. I didn't like how everything was an extra charge. My onion rings and my boyfriend's fries were extra, cheese was extra, bacon was extra. The food took atleast 2O min to come which was not so bad because we were having good conversation.Overall it was cool. We will visit again. read more

The good--love the location and the decor. Drinks ("shakes")were unique and tasty. (but add some scotch for us Yankees) Onion rings were great. We had the batter fried cod, the chicken breast and the fontina cheese. The cheese was a hit, the chicken rather plain and so-so and the fish was WAY too heavy on the batter. The fish inside was quite good and would have been much better with a lighter crispier batter which would have cut the volume by about half and still be a good serving. Fries were not as good as the rings--a bit bland and average. Overall we had a good time and loved the setting and the service was just fine despite being very busy on a warm Saturday night Some tweaking to the dishes could easily raise our rating. read more

On my 5th or 6th visit to Bootleggers now, the food each and every time has been fantastic; the consistency of food quality has now made this my favorite restaurant in Lynchburg. While food quality is A+ , its unfortunate that the staff has been hit or miss at times. On a couple occasions host and/or wait staff seemed to be hating life. Tonight though we had Emilee, and from now on will be requesting her only, she was friendly, helpful, and went above and beyond for us! Dropped in about 1:00 saturday afternoon, it was busy but not crowded, no wait for inside table. Wanted to sit outside and enjoy the view and weather. Staff was friendly and attentive. Nice setting. Wife had the Butchers choice burger, she said it was good. I had the special, chorizo burger. It was ok. Burger patty was good, and large. Bun was just so-so. There was some kind of cilantro aioli sauce spread very thinly on the bottom bun ... could not taste it, needed twice as much. I saw a couple of pieces of chorizo, but again they didn't add anything. Fries were good, but all they had was ketchup. We go to Burger Bach in Richmond, they have about 20 different sauces available. Need some of those here. I had a local dark beer, can't remember the name and the in-line menus don't show the beer choices. They show the liquor choices, so its not a question of advertising alcohol. It was a good beer, but overpriced. If i remember the menu, it advertised a 16 oz beer, but what i got was a brandy snifter. Paying the bill was interesting. The server brings an ipad to the table and you swipe there. Had to do it 3 times, the first two ipads were defective and she had to take them back. She was embarrassed and apologetic. Visiting Lynchburg and saw this cute place while walking around. Reviews were good so thought I should give it a try. Place is nice inside and I imagine it is even better when the weather is warm and they can open the garage doors. Big menu of burgers. I went with the classic. It was plenty big but not impressive. Burger was not juicy at all. Also had an Old Fashioned which was so so. The best thing of the night was the Rosemary Garlic Parmesan Fries. They are worth getting! This was our 4 time here, no matter if the place is empty, there is always a 30 min wait or more. Waited 40 mins for food, not good for children because of the wait. One child got her hotdog but left off the cheese. Waitress offered to take hotdog back, but brought back a large hotdog that was frozen in the middle. If you don't like burgers though this isn't your place cause that's really their specialty, besides a few appetizers. Bootleggers is located in a historical downtown area with plenty of family-friendly shops nearby, and though the downtown area was not as good looking as those in Savannah or Charleston, the overall historic vibe was present. Bootleggers is located down a nifty alleyway, marked by custom signs. The patronage is mostly young adults, but family oriented customers should not fear this location- it is a professional place with culture- something many restaurants lack nowadays. This bar is a must-try for young adults and families alike in the area. The details: Bootleggers was unevenly divided in its floor plan, giving a completely different vibe to half of the eatery. One side was a more bar-like environment with televisions, while the other side consisted of booths. This detracted from the overall feel of the restaurant, as the lively vibes and televisions were not in half of the building. There were no nearby televisions, and the open floor plan of the booth room was a little bit awkward. The service was not the best, but was in no way bad or lacking. The food was again exceptional. The food: All of the recipes seemed to be well balanced in flavor, and not overbearing. Burgers are the main deal at this venue, and they do them well. I would recommend ordering a little pink in your burger, as I tried some of a well cooked burger, and the taste and texture of the pink significantly beat out the dry brown all the way burger. Waiter apologized and said they were out of lots of things due to college students being back. What a great find on the Lynchburg riverfront! My son lives in some lofts about 2 blocks away and he says we have to try this place. I think he's going to take me to some dive that could only be loved by a 24 year old. Turns out dad shouldn't judge. This is one of the best places in all of Lynchburg. We arrived for happy hour and we had Max our spaniel with us. We were welcomed on the patio and they even brought Max a water bowl. All draught beers are a dollar off during happy hour. There prices are good but during happy hour they are a deal. We started with onion rings for an appetizer and had a couple of excellent burgers. The only thing we skipped was dessert, no room. It's basically a burger joint with a few salads for the non-burger eaters in the group. Everyone in our party had a burger or sandwich. The burgers are thick, the toppings and condiments are fairly unique (goat cheese, ghost pepper spread, horseradish mustard), and a decent selection of beers are available on tap. They also have a large selection of whiskey and bourbon, but those are pricey. Two of us ordered our burgers medium-rare (some pink in the middle), but neither had any pink (cooked to medium). The pretzel and beer cheese appetizer was good, but nothing extraordinary. Value - 2 stars. All of the burgers and sandwiches are a la carte, which made me think this place was like Ruth's Chris had a baby with McDonald's. The burgers are fairly expensive ($10-13), and for them not to come with fries is a rip-off. The side of fries is $2, and you don't get much for that extra $ (plus they weren't that great). As a Downtown resident I had been by the place a number of times and it always seemed busy. We came tonight because my daughter was visiting from out of town and had heard about the adult milkshakes. That's what she had and my 14-year-old daughter Had a regular milkshake and an order of fries which turned out to be a gigantic bowl full. I had a bunless numero Uno which was dramatically flavorful. Very tasty but I think the burger at the nearby Emerald Stone Grill still wins my prize for best burger. Bootleggers lived up to its reputation as loud. Definitely a positive addition to downtown Lynchburg nightlife. Since they didn't know me they were a little slow on keeping my sweet tea glass fall but I assume they would improve with a little experience and training. I tasted the last slurp of the adult milkshake and thought it was just fine but I definitely won't be a regular for that!
