Having recently returned from SE Asia, I was looking forward to trying this place during our SoCal trip. The public parking structure nearby was the best option as there was only a couple spots behind the restaurant. Inside were two seating areas and we got seated on the narrower right side which also led to the bathrooms. The menu was simple with noodles (soup and dry), rice plates, wok (served with noodles) and appetizers. The Singapore laksa was ok as I was looking for a lot more punch/spice and flavor from the soup. The beef rendang plate came with a huge variety of items including rice, fish, hard boiled egg, marinated potatoes. The rendang was on the small side and a little tough to chew. The noodles were our favorite dish with a nice mix of char siu, fish cake and balls over thin noodles. Flavors were good. Service was good throughout but most dishes just didn't hit the mark for us. read more

We couldn't decide where to go for lunch, so we ended up stopping by this restaurant on a whim. The restaurant was clean, spacious, and we were seated promptly after arriving. After looking through the menu and drink options, I was tempted to order one of the curry dishes, but since it was labeled spicy, I decided to play it safe and ordered the Borneo Plate instead. My husband went with the curry. The drink selection was fairly limited, but I found one that sounded interesting and ordered it. A little later, our server let me know they were out of that particular drink and offered a substitute instead. The food and drinks arrived quickly, and both of us enjoyed our meals. The flavors were good, the portions were satisfying, and overall the dining experience started off well. Unfortunately, the service became a bit awkward toward the end of our visit. When we were ready to pay, one server was engaged in a lengthy conversation with another table, while the other appeared distracted and unavailable. We also felt that some of the interactions with us were a little unusual, which left us feeling somewhat uncomfortable. That said, the food was enjoyable and arrived promptly. While the service experience could have been better, we appreciated the clean atmosphere and the quality of the meal. read more

This is an old favorite for Singaporean, Malaysian and Indonesian food. Been coming here for over 10 years now. The Laksa here is also very good if you like soup noodles. We almost always get the Roti, Chicken Satay and the Nasi Camprur. Service can be a hit or miss depending on how busy the restaurant gets. Some of the servers do have an accent so sometimes might be difficult for some understand but overall they are nice. Great casual family restaurant. read more

What We Ordered: -Chicken Satay Plate $15 -Roti Prata (S) $4.50 -Borneo w/Flat Rice Noodles $16.50 Pro Tip: Order the dish that shares the name of the restaurant. You can't go wrong! I had high hopes coming in especially with the great reviews. It was a mixed bag. We ordered the Chicken Satay and it was a tad bit too spicy and overcooked. I liked the peanut sauce, but it was also oily. This was a miss for our table. The Roti Prata was great! The curry dipping sauce was lovely! We used the leftover curry to smother over our white rice. Next time, we would order the large as that single pancake got gobbled up real quick. The Borneo with the Flat Rice Noodles was pretty good as well. We would come back, but we wouldn't be in rush to do so! read more

This is one of those spots that I unfortunately don't remember often enough! A friend and I were going out to lunch and she suggested another place off Main street in Alhambra that is popular, but the food is kinda plain, so it made me think of Borneo as an alternative. Not much ambiance here, so it's good for a quick casual lunch. I decided to try the Soto which is listed on the menu under noodles soups but also says "no noodles". This dish being sort of uncategorizable plus it said fried chicken and tomatoes intrigued me so both of us ended up getting our own! The waitress seemed a bit confused like...most people get laksa, but we assured her we wanted to try this. We also ordered steamed white rice on the side and it is a generous serving of food. We both ended up bringing half of it home. (I originally suggested splitting but it was nice having it easy to eat the next morning!) it is nice and brothy with a light coconut flavor. Not spicy but very savory. I would definitely get this again! read more

First time here after a movie at the Alhambra Regal. What a delight. Started with the Roti Prata and it was delicious. I had the Chicken Satay and my friend had the Laksa Kwe Tiau Singapore ~ Singaporean rice noodle curry soup. We also had the iced shaken coffee which was the perfect combo of mildly sweet and nutty. Service was great--cute waiter! While the interior decor is simple it makes sense for this space right near the corner of Main and Garfield. Definitely coming back! read more

Malaysian restaurant with super courteous staff. Similar aesthetics to Uncle Fung Coffee stand right next door. Started off with a large roti prata. Comes with 2 crispy flour pancakes with a good char and a creamy curry sauce to dip in. The gado gado was refreshing and has an addicting peanut sauce. The chicken satay was grilled perfectly as it was juicy and tender! It also comes drizzled with the peanut sauce and fried onions on top giving it nice aromatics. From the wok, I got the Borneo seafood with flat rice noodles. Comes with a good amount of fish cakes but can use some more wok flavor. The Singaporean laksa with egg noodle was creamy and has a good amount of the shrimp flavor. Cozy restaurant with a parking garage in the back. Solid place to come back to if I'm craving Malaysian food or if I want more of that peanut sauce. read more

This place was to die for! So authentic. We ordered the perfect amount of food for a party of five. We got here on a warm day and it was pretty busy but they turn around so quickly the wait was only 5 minutes with two parties ahead of us. Service was quick and helpful, with waters and drinks coming out right away. We ordered the Roti, pempek, indo mie, nasi campur, two laksa one with egg noodles and another with the flat rice noodles, and I got a sweet iced teh tarik. I would recommend every dish. From the savory sour sauce of the pempek, the nutty spiced sauce with the roti, and I didn't care how hot it was that laksa was comforting. It was all good. The restaurant was spacious and can fit a lot of people with lots of room. It's colorful clean and vibrant. Would love to come back! read more

Absolutely amazing. One of the best noodle soup spots I've had in a while. Everything was bold, creamy, and packed with flavor. Roti Prata: Get Soft and flakey with just the right amount of crisp on the edges. The curry dip it comes with is rich and fragrant. Honestly could just snack on this all day. Singapore Laksa: GET This bowl was ridiculous. So creamy, spicy, and layered with flavor. Had shrimp, tofu, fish cake, corn, and all kinds of toppings. One of those dishes that makes you sit back for a second. It's that good. Service was fast and no frills. Menu is huge and has tons of options so I'm definitely coming back to try the rest. My date brought me here because he said it was his favorite place to eat. I suppose you can say I had high expectations from his gleaming review. The staff was kind and attentive and we were seated right away. We ordered the milk tea which is a fan favorite and it definitely did not disappoint. It was sweet and delicious! The perfect drink for a hot, summer weekend! I ordered the beef rendang and it was good. The food was very flavorful , but despite the meat being "fall off the bone" it was a little rough, almost like jerky. The parking is right in the back of the establishment at the first street parking structure. You'll have to enter through a little alleyway, listen to your navigation you will be going the right way lol And if you must know, the bathrooms were very clean! Definitely would pee here again. If I do come again next time, I will try the noodle dish my date had. It looked very good! read more

Great Indonesian spot! We came in and the server sat us down immediately no time wasted. She took our orders pretty quickly and all the food came out in 10 min? Pempek and Roti were super good! My partner got the Kwe Tiau Siram with flat rice noodle and it was tasty but the noodles were broken up so it was a little annoying to eat. Came here for the second time because the food was decent the first time, even though the service already wasn't great. I brought friends this time hoping the experience would be better, but unfortunately it was not. The service was consistently poor throughout the meal. We had to ask multiple times just to get basic things like plates and utensils, and it honestly felt like nobody was paying attention to the table. The most frustrating part happened when paying the bill. The server manually changed the receipt to add an 18% gratuity for our party of six, but never explained why. There was no disclosure anywhere on the menu or beforehand that an automatic gratuity would be added. If I hadn't asked, we probably would have just paid without noticing. What made it worse was that after already charging the 18% gratuity, the receipt still suggested additional 15%, 18%, and 20% tips. That means customers could easily end up paying 33%-48% in total tips without realizing it. I usually have no problem tipping well for good service, but this felt extremely misleading and unprofessional, especially for a casual eatery with minimal service. Decent food alone is not enough to make up for the uncomfortable experience. read more

A really great find in Alhambra. We stopped in and ordered the Singaporean Laksa and the Beef Rendang, and both were absolutely great. The laksa had a rich, flavorful broth, and the flavors were balanced. The beef rendang was tender and packed with deep, slow-cooked flavor, and I loved the variety of items on the plate. The vibe here is low-key and welcoming, and I particularly loved the bright painted doors throughout the restaurant - it really added a great pop of color. The staff was super friendly and happy to answer our questions about the menu. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the mood for Malaysian or Indonesian food done right. Came in on a Saturday morning right at opening and there was no line! The ambiance inside was really cool! The servers were really kind and kept making sure we were okay at our table. first time trying singaporean/indonesian/malaysian food! came here on a thursday afternoon and there was quite a line. although it took a while to get seated, it was worth it. staff was friendly. my boyfriend and i ordered the: * chicken satay appetizer - very flavorful. the peanut sauce was rich and creamy. it sort of tasted sweet and tangy. my favorite dish! * singapore laksa - good soup! a savory and comforting dish but i expected it to be more spicy. * nasi campur - my boyfriend LOVED this dish. he liked that it brought nostalgia to him. parking was conveniently behind the restaurant. we got uncle fung coffee after eating here. i liked how both shops had a theme to their interior decorating. read more

Extremely delicious food & free parking in the structure behind the restaurant! Food comes out relatively quick, but wait time to be seated could take a while depending on the time of the day (usually busy during lunch and dinner hours). The staff members are also very sweet and nice. My go to items are the Roti Prata and Singapore Laksa. The Roti Prata is a flaky thin pastry/bread that you can dip in a Laksa sauce (similar to curry). It's freshly baked and a very good appetizer. My boyfriend and I liked it so much that we decided to add one more order of it after we finished it. I highly recommend getting a large portion since it's very light! I also like the Singapore Laksa with egg noodles. The broth resembles a rich and savory coconut milk curry flavor. It comes with an abundant amount of ingredients (fish cakes, fried tofu, shrimp, corn, bean sprouts). I love the texture of the noodles! Minor cons I have to mention: Every time I've visited this restaurant, I'm never greeted by a host. I usually just write down my name on the clipboard by myself. I understand that they are quite busy and could be understaffed, but it would be nice to be greeted and acknowledged by a staff member upon entering or even being told an estimated wait time. When our appetizer dishes are done, some of the workers will notice but won't take it off our table. This caused less space on our table as other dishes were being delivered. I think awareness of those additional plates and knowing when to ask to take it away would be helpful. Nonetheless, love their food and would definitely come back! read more

I've been here a few times and it's nice to see how successful they've become, enough to expand next door. That said, I do think the food quality dipped a bit compared to before, though it's still really good overall. Some dishes that were supposed to come in banana leaves didn't, which took away from the experience. Flavor-wise, most things were solid. The white gravy didn't work for me, but the roti was decent. I went here on a rainy Friday (1/2/2026) and was seated quickly. My sister and I met up here for a lunch date as this place was her suggestion. Wow the food was amazing. I can't remember all the items we got but I believe the bread with the curry sauce is called Roti. The Borneo shaken iced coffee was delicious as well!! My first time trying Indonesian/Malaysian food and wow this place was definitely a hit! 10/10 will definitely return!! read more

I love Borneo and I've been coming here since before it was Michelin mentioned. It's so cute and albeit a little small but the wait is worth it. It's close to the Regal in Alhambra and the Malaysian food is delicious. Granted as a vegetarian, it can be hard to find veg options but they can customize certain dishes to make it veg friendly. I love the indo mi with tofu and egg. My husband loves the laksa, chicken katsu with curry rice and the hokkien dishes. If you haven't been here, its definitely worth checking out! read more

I love coming to Borneo solely for their Laksa, although their other offerings are also super delicious. Their laksa broth is very flavorful, rich, and creamy. I love that you can choose what noodles to get (I get the egg noodles because I enjoy the bounce and chew compared to flat rice noodles). They also have a lot of toppings added in such as fish cake, fried tofu, shrimp, boiled egg, beansprouts, and corn. When it gets busy, it may be harder to flag down a server but overall, I am a returning customer because of how dang good their laksa is. read more

Great food, generous portions, and friendly and efficient service. What's not to like? Located in Alhambra so there is plenty of street parking, and a large parking lot just a block away. There's often a wait but it goes by fast. The restaurant is connected to the coffee shop next door so very convenient to grab a beverage - the coffee on the restaurant menu is delicious as well. We ordered the Hokkein Mie Dry Noodles as well as the Singapore Laksa. My friend LOVED the Singapore Laska, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Hokkein Mie as well. We were also very full. Also shoutout to the staff - my friend is allergic to cashews and pistachios and even though english is not their first language, all the servers tried their best to understand and made sure to pay extra attention so that my friend could stay safe and enjoy her food. Borneo is one of my all time favorite restaurants! We got their roti prata, singapore laksa, chicken satay, hokkien mie, and indo mie. My favorites are the singapore laksa and chicken satay and always order those when I visit. I can totally understand how they won a Michelin award. The flavors of the singaore laksa are so rich and creamy and I love the peanut sauce coating the tender chicken satay skewers. Their service is efficient and friendly too. 10/10 highly recommend. read more

SOO GOOD!! Came around 7pm, was moderately busy but we were seated immediately and served fast. Bathrooms were clean. Iced cendol: 9/10 Unique flavor! The coconut milk instantly bathed my taste buds and replenished my thirst. Toppings paired well but it is on the sweet side. Decently sized drink, was so good I finished it in five minutes Roti prata: 12/10 Soft, fluffy, and crispy! Was not too oily or greasy. Teared apart easily. Came out at a hot temperature but not burning hot. Dipping it into the curry sauce brought my conscious out of my behind and revealed a new dimension. Oh my gosh was it so good wished they gave more for the price Borneo with flat rice noodle: 9/10 Noodles were cooked perfectly, not too dry, oily, and overcooked. Shrimp and char siu quality was amazing!!! Fishcake and fish balls were average though Penyat with curry rice: 20/10 Think of like winning the lottery (or maybe like if you ordered 10 bone in at wingstop and they give 20). THE CHICKEN. IS GOOD. Thought the waiter forgot my knife, but nope! Meat falls right off the bone, so tender and delicious. Very well seasoned, not too spicy, packs a nice crunch too. We poured the left over curry sauce from the roti onto the rice. Overall rating: 10/10 Portions are great for one person only, but are definitely big enough to be shared! I recommend getting one of each dish (soup, rice, noodles, etc) and sharing it between your party! read more

MOST DELICIOUS COMFORT FOOD! I cannot recommend this place enough! There isn't much Indonesian food in la/Orange County so I'm so happy that Borneo is around, the food is so so delicious. The restraunt is clean and very casual. Staff is not always super friendly my boyfriend and I frequent this spot purely because of how delicious the meals are cooked. FLAVOURFUL AND SATIATING! My favorite Indonesian restaurant in SDV!!! My partner and I LOOVE this place! There was no wait on a Sunday afternoon and we were seated shortly. Food came super fast and we loved everything! If you love hearty meals with some kick from spice, this place is for you! This spot is right next to Uncle Fung Coffee and they are family business. They have rice plates and entrees great for sharing. First of all, upon arrival, we were greeted with smile and politeness by the staff. She was very sweet. She asked if it was our first time and wishes we enjoy our meals. The place is a decent size, with a good amount of tables. Their menu is pretty straightforward. We had the Roti Prata, Sate Ayam, and Nasi Rendang Plate, and the Borneo egg noodles (no photos; we ate too quickly) Roti Prata? Amazing SAUCE. It was fire. The Roti was great with the Sate Ayam. It was such a great start of our meal, the chicken sate was soft and juicy, and just the right amount of char from the fire. Nasi Rendang plate was filling as well. There were 4 of us and we enjoyed equally what the plate had. The Sambal was hella good too. I'm not good with spice but that one made me crave it in every bite. Parking: There is a parking structure in the back of Borneo. It is pretty much shared with all the restaurants on the block. It can get difficult to find parking during peak hours. Service: I ordered takeout from Borneo. The food was ready by the time I got there (20 minute drive). Food: I got the Beef Rendang, Borneo Seafood with Flat Rice Noodle, and Roti Prata. The roti was very pricey (2 pieces in a large for $9.50). It was not as fluffy as I liked but overall it tasted alright. The Beef Rendang was very good. The portion was huge and the beef was very tender and flavorful. The Borneo seafood noodles were a bit disappointing. It was kind of bland and the portion was pretty small. read more

I was curious about the origin of this food. My husband is Indo so this is what he had to say about it: Kalimantan noodles were created by the indo chinese. It is a style of noodles that it is dry served with bbq pork and eggs. When you serve it with beef and chicken it caters to the native indos that want food halal. The rice dishes are also native origin. This the best indonesian restaurant in the area. It's all about the sambal and their sambal is pretty good. Indo mie noodles are homemade. I'm not sure if the meatballs are homemade but they are pretty tasty. Most indo places are loaded with salt and msg but this place wasn't too salty at all. Mie Kecil #3 with meatballs and chicken mushroom - dry noodles with soup on the side. the flavored oil is on the bottom of the bowl so you can mix before you eat but i like to eat my way down to the deliciousness. topped with fried chicken that is stir fried with mushroom, sliced meatballs, soy sauce boiled eggs and a boat load of fried shallots. also some greens tucked under the noodles. i like indo ramen noodles so i liked this dish. without mixing the oil together on the noodles it's a little underseasoned but this is what you do...add the red chili sauce and a little bit of vinegar and it changes everything!! the egg noodles made it a little heavy for me so i ate half and shared the rest. the soup was really good. white peppery, not too salty, a good accompaniment with the dish. Baso Gerobak - thin rice noodles with a light meatball flavored base soup. lots of meatballs, fried shallots, greens. i loooooved this dish! it was simple, light and also delish with the sambal and vinegar. not much to say because it was so straightforward. Nasi Campur - roasted pork, chinese pork sausage and lemongrassy fried chicken cubes over a thin layer of rice. served with a clear gravy. you're supposed to spoon a little gravy over the meat and rice, add a few drops of nasi campur sambal and eat. i'm not a huge fan of pork but the roasted red pork was pretty good. i didn't like the sausage but i don't like chinese sausage in general. the chicken was really good. tons of lemongrassy, shalloty, garlicy flavor. the clear gravy is similar to the gravy that is served with thai rad na gravy. it's like if they used the meatball soup and thickened it with cornstarch. this was a successful dish. Kwetiaw Goreng - I order without bean sprouts and fish cake, add meatballs. It's better than pad see ew or char kway teo. This is my favorite place to get flat noodles but I wish they had sliced beef. The chocolate milk is milo powdered mix. I'm used to heavy full fat american super sweet chocolate milk so I'm not a good judge of this drink. I like the malted flavor in it. The tropical tea is a must order. Super fruity, sweet and refreshing! When you've got spicy, vinegary, salty flavors overwhelming your mouth the tropical tea is a nice balanced. I crave for this restaurant. I passed by this place so many times and never thought it was an Indonesian restaurant until my client told me about it. I didn't know Borneo was actually one of the city in northern Indonesia bordering Malaysia. This was a definite hole in the wall place with great food if you like curry and spice. I must tell you the spice is a little different than Thai and Indian. Their chicken Sate is delicious with their version of Siracha sauce. One has fish sauce and the other more citrusy or tangy. My other favorite is their pancake, kind of reminds me of the Northern Chinese pan fiend bread, but dipping into their yummy curry sauce was awesome! The only reason why I didn't give it a full 5 stars is their poor ventilation and air conditioning. The place was small and their kitchen is right along side of the tables divided by a wall. Being hot and humid lately, the heat from the kitchen makes it unbearable. When I asked the manager about it, he says the air conditioning is already on. I recently revisited Borneo Kalimantan in Alhambra with a friend, and although the experience was good, I noticed a slight change in quality compared to pre-COVID times. Nonetheless, it remains one of my preferred places for Borneo Region cuisine. We started our meal with the Roti with Curry and the Singapore Laksa, and I must say, the flavors were nothing short of phenomenal. The Singapore Laksa, in particular, left a lasting impression with its rich and robust curry soup flavor. It was a perfect balance of spices, creating a tantalizing taste that was both comforting and exciting. I was pleased to learn that they offer a vegetarian option for the Laksa, which shows they cater to various dietary preferences. The Roti was good, though I would rate it 4/5. It had that perfect fluffiness and taste, but I couldn't help but notice that it was a bit on the pricier side for what it offered. While I enjoyed the visit, I couldn't help but feel that the overall quality of the dishes has gone down slightly since my last visit before COVID-19. We ordered the Singapore Laksa, Lemak, and the Borneo Noodles from the Wok, and each one had its own standout flavor. The Singapore Laksa had a flavorful and comforting curry broth. I've been here a couple times, and I really enjoy their traditional noodle dishes. Granted, I've never had this kind of food before so I don't have a point of reference .... but it is so delicious. I always get their noodle dishes with medium width noodles. When it arrives,you pour the savory soup over the noodles and meat and it is just delicious. There is a mix of salty, sweet, crunchy, and chewy at once in every bite! Their bbq pork and fish cake is delicious and the noodles are a perfect handmade al dente. Such a unique taste the first time! Once I tried the wide noodles and it just takes too long to come out because it takes longer to cook. The stir fried noodles didn't taste anything special. I have spent a lot of time in the Region and can say that this place creates some very authentic Southeast Asian flavors. Started with an order of delicious satay (only chicken available) which were cooked perfectly and had the peanut sauce served over them. Then an order of Roti Prata served with the traditional curry sauce. Both were very tasty. The final dish was a house specialty of Indonesian fried chicken, homemade chili sauce and rice garnished with toasted garlic. Ordered the pempek (the egg version) and it had a wonderful chewy texture and wasn't too fishy. Love a good fish cake. Also ordered the mi goreng kalimantan which was packed full of strong flavor yet not too overwhelming. Really enjoyed the chashu bits and the fish cakes / balls in the dish. This place serves some of the most authentic Indonesian food around! Every time we come, we're never disappointed. The dishes are consistently delicious, with a great variety of ingredients that keep things interesting. The prices are reasonable, and the food comes out impressively fast. Borneo Eatery totally impressed me! I'd give it a solid 5/5. The beef rendang is easily my favorite as it's super tender, flavorful, and rich without being heavy. Their naan is just as good - soft, slightly chewy, and perfect for soaking up their delicious curry dip (which I couldn't stop eating). This place seems to be a neighborhood favorite. We walked in on a Friday night and the place was packed! We ordered a noodle dish and an ox-tail dish that were both flavorful, but slightly overpriced for the portions we were served. The ox-tail dish didn't come with rice or noodles so we ended up ordering an extra side of rice that took forever to make its way to our table. Overall, our food was tasty. This food is great. I worked in an Indonesian/Malay restaurant years ago in NYC and I often CRAVE lemak and rendang. This place has been on my radar for a while and I finally tried and it was wonderful. My biggest issue is portion and spice level. I wish, for what I paid, I got a bit more lemak. I also wish it was a bit spicier. I'm used to SWEATING when I eat lemak, this barely hit me. All in all, the place was fantastic and I can't wait to try it again :) read more

After watching an episode of Anthony Bourdain on Peranakan cuisine, my friend told me about this gem in Alhambra. In Chinese-Southeast Asian cuisine, there's never a shortage of flavor. The portion size is also on the smaller side, so it's easy to order more than just one dish per visit.
