When you walk up to Bouche, it is a bit of a surprise setting as the restaurant is very small and narrow, with limited indoor seating. We got seated outside. Like many SF streets there is a slope on the street and the tables were set on the slope. A bit awkward and interesting at the same time. The dinner is a set 3-course menu. Our server was super informative and friendly, explained everything in detail and made great conversation. We ordered the extra foie gras appetizer, bread/butter and the surprise appetizer. The starters were both great, choice of parsnip soup and squash salad. Can go wrong with either one. For entree, I opted for the summer shellfish stew and the rest of our party had the lamb entree. Everything was great, nothing majorly stood out but great food in simple setting. We were celebrating two birthdays and this made for a casual relaxing setting with good food and great conversation. The Mrs. and I bunch this morning at Bouche. Well....to us it was breakfast. We had seen Bouche last night when we stopped at the Tunnel Top bar for drinks. We arrived around shortly before nine and were seated at a table for two outside. Our server Megan took our drink order. We ordered coffee but got an Americano instead. I assume Bouche doesn't offer drip coffee because an Americano was all that was offered to us. It was really good. The brunch menu is limited which I really like. The Mrs. and I decided to share a few dishes. We ordered the the bread basket which came with very generous slices of Capagne, Sourdough and Focaccia served with plumb jam, butter and honey. The bread is from ACME and it was so good. The other dish we ordered was the omelette consisting of a wild mushroom medley, marinated goat cheese and Herbes De Provence. I'm not the biggest fan of omelettes but the ingredients in Bouche's got my attention. It was such a light and flavorful dish. We also ordered a side of bacon which was incredible. We checked out the dinner menu online and it looks really good. Bouche offers a three course prix fix menu for $55. A bargain by San Francisco standards. Bouche's footprint is pretty small but the space is beautifully decorated. The service we received from Megan was great. She was attentive and personable. We've been here before long ago and have had fond memories. So we came back years later. It's still cute n quaint inside. The food however is far from what it was and what it should be. That's to say the least. I cringe at the 4.3 stars They do a prix fixe menu these days at $55 for 3 courses. Choice of soup or salad, choice of main dish, and dessert. There are a few other sides you can order. The tomato salad was cut to order heirlooms tossed in vinaigrette and barely any goat cheese and small chunks of watermelon. Corn soup was blitzed in the blender and tasted like corn. Nothing memorable about it. There was pop corn on it though. Beef tartare came out grey unlike the freshly made ones. Probably premade and sat there until served or maybe the pickle juices worked it as it sat in the station throughout the night. Mussels were over cooked shriveled and dry. The tagliatelle w the anchovy add on was so over cooked it clumped up and had a bad mushy texture. Not sure how anyone messes that up. The chicken was over cooked and the sauce was imbalanced very much on the sweet side. The bone marrow add on was odd going with a chicken dish but we added it anyway. Not sure how anyone can mess up bone marrow but it surely wasn't cooked all the way through well enough. Dessert... The theme is nothing memorable... or shall we say very memorable. So bad that there's no way we can forget it. What happened to this place?! Change of ownership and chef maybe?! Who knows. Brought it up to their team and they didn't offer to do anything at all. At least the wine was decent. $300 down the drain for a really distasteful birthday celebration last night. Very sad. Spend your hard earned money here at your own risk. Hope they figure it out and make this place worth it for tourists and locals alike to visit. At this very moment it's just a scam in our eyes. This place is just a near miss from being excellent. The omelet was wonderful, but was served on the same plate as a green salad. Honestly, I felt scammed during my recent experience here for multiple reasons, but we'll get to that. My friends and I came for a makeshift holiday party and the ambiance was quite nice and homey. Our waiter was also super friendly throughout the whole meal. We all ordered the $55 tasting menu, and it definitely seemed like some choices were better than others. I had the Cauliflower soup, the Lamb, and they ran out of the chocolate dessert, so I had the cake instead. - Cauliflower Soup: This was a bit of an underwhelming way to begin the meal. I felt like it was lacking flavor and seasoning, and the soup tasted "gray" if that makes sense. - Lamb Tenderloin: Absolutely delicious. Everything on this plate was perfect from the cook of the meat, the seasoning, and the garnishes. I had the bone marrow add on, which was also tasty and well made. They knocked this one out of the park, and this is what I was excited for. This definitely made me forget about the soup while I was dining, and I was excited for dessert. - Dessert: Unfortunately my excitement disappeared after tasting these (I had a bit of both). The chocolate was super runny and it seemed like it didn't set. The cake was a bit on the drier side, and the fruits it came with seemed unintentionally dried out. And now, the scam! They offered us bread with butter which we assume is complimentary, given it is not on the tasting menu as an add-on like other items were, and the server had not told us. We asked for another plate of bread after our first round, and the server said he would bring us two - this to me implies that something is complimentary, because if something cost money, you don't just assume that the customer wants more than what they ask for - you should ask or check. At the end of the night, we had a $36 bread charge for 6 plates. Overall, this was a meal with some really high highs (the main!), and some lows (mid appetizer, bad dessert). I would come back if I could order the main lamb dish a-la-carte, but the bread charge leaves a bad taste in my mouth. read more

***Brunch Review*** Super classy ambience with some very creative French style brunch dishes, but the experience here was pretty underwhelming overall. Came here with the ladies for brunch to celebrate our friend's birthday. While I did enjoy my time here, I wasn't very impressed with the food. To be honest, I haven't had much experience with French style brunch cuisine other than the basics, so I really don't have much to compare it to. But, many of the dishes that we ordered were heavily lacking in flavor. We made reservations ahead of time and we were sat outside on their cute patio parklet. I've really come to enjoy the whole SF parklet idea since COVID, and I can tell that they put a lot of thought into their parklet design and aesthetics. Their indoor dining area is beautiful as well, but it's super tiny inside. I've never been to France, but one of my friend's mentioned that many of the restaurants have a similar setup. I love the concept of this. We ordered an array of brunch dishes to share amongst our group: *Scramble Egg: Pretty good. This was actually the only egg dish that I somewhat liked. It was scrambled eggs atop smoked salmon and crème fraiche that's served over a blini (a thin pancake or crepe). The egg and smoked salmon kind of reminded me of a benedict, and the crème fraiche added some dimension to it. There was absolutely no seasoning on this, but I imagine that it might be because it's scrambled eggs. *Whipped Egg (French Toast): A classic French toast with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Nothing out of the ordinary, but it was very tasty and prepared as you would expect it to be. *Homemade Bread Basket w/ Jams: This was actually my favorite dish out of everything that we had. I mean, who would have thought? Bread and jam?! But, all of the breads were soft and fresh and the jams were exquisite. Each jam had such an immense flavor profile, and it was the perfect shareable dish. *Omelette (w/ wild mushroom): Wasn't a fan. If I'm being frank, I'm not much of a fan of wild mushrooms. This omelette was stuffed with them. They were also overly chewy like they had been overcooked and I couldn't even taste the goat cheese. And again, there was absolutely no seasoning on this whatsoever. The potatoes that came with it were decent, but they weren't crispy like how I prefer them and they were also on the oily side. *Poached Egg: Didn't like this at all. I just simply wasn't a fan of the meurette sauce. It was too pungent and really overpowered the taste of the eggs. This also came with the same kind of potatoes as the omelette. Wouldn't order this again. *Panna Cotta: This was actually a birthday dessert for my friend, but of course we all had to have a taste. It was good but came in a bowl which I'm not used to. All of the food dishes were plated and presented beautifully, but there were a lot of misses in terms of taste. We also purchased two pitchers of mimosas, and it didn't taste like there was much champagne/sparkling in them at all. Kind of a waste of money. Our server was sweet but she was very slow with the service, and there weren't many other parties aside from us. The chef visited our table and introduced himself which was amicable. All in all, brunch was just an average experience for me. I would still like to give them another try for dinner because most of their rave reviews mention that their dinner service is wonderful. As for brunch, I'd suggest skipping it unless you want something average. read more

Our server was very attentive and pleasant Unfortunately the food was not good. We decided to order the "chef's choice" appetizer which turned out to be skate fish. We were very excited but the fish reeked of amonia!! I don't like sending food back but this was completely inedible and gross. I think they were just trying to use up old food. Instead we got the lamb tartare which was ok For entree I got the sole meunière. It was dry and drowned in butter. There were a few sad pieces of broccoli and potatoes also drenched in butter. My next review is going to be on the French restaurant Bouche in San Francisco on Pine Street, just north of Union Square. Well the thing that stood out to me the most on the (virtual) menu was the modest, yet very impressively thoughtful and creative wine list with selections from seeminly obscure regions in France, but a wonderment to wine lovers of Languedoc Roussillon, Minervois, Bandol (Syrah), Southwest France and the lesser varietals in the principal wine growing regions. For instance, I don't recall a time when I saw grand cru Beaujolais as the feature under "Burgundy", or wines from Cahors (original Malbec), Juracon (Petit Manseng) as well as whites from Bordeaux (sauv blanc/semillon). The waiter was a native French man who was very kind enough to give me samples of the wine. Bouche is small only in square footage - with limited seating so make sure you get your reservations in early. The menu is price fix and it's also simple, short and sweet. There are only three items to choose from. For the starter, I selected the cauliflower soup. Extremely well presented and puréed to perfection. I would've loved to have a few mini bites of cauliflower but that is just my personal preference. The soup managed to balance savory creaminess with pocket hints of saltiness. For the entrée, I selected the fabulous duck breast. It is not an easy task to pan fry duck breast to medium rare temperature while keeping it flavorful and not too gamey. The meat is served with a brussels sprout lollipop with dollops of potato & parsnip. Finally I enjoyed an apple pear crumble that was served warm to hot, which felt really good because we were seated out in the chilly San Francisco evening. The experience overall is unmistakably French so another words don't come here if you're in a rush because you should take your time to savor all that they have to offer. The service: from the server to the maître d' and even one of the owners helped shape the experience so that you feel like you're invited into somebody's home. This is as authentic as a French restaurant can get and again, even more of a bonus if you are a fan of wine. read more

This is not a trendy spot, nor is it a tourist spot, despite the location. It is, however, a legit modern French bistro, with excellent food, great service from French-speaking staff, and a small but reliable wine selection. I've been coming here for over 10 years and it is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. It is non-pretentious and has just a relaxed urban vibe. Fairly small, do not come with an attitude of getting everything you want immediately. Sit back relax and enjoy a glass of wine and take a minute to talk to the staff and the people you meet at this unique establishment. Bon appétit! read more

In San Francisco for a night, we had reservations for two at 7:00pm. We were greeted and seated upstairs in a quaint space. Our server was a very enthusiastic gentleman that took our drink order and explained the menu. It is a prix fixe menu with 3 courses. My daughter ordered the potato and leek soup and the risotto l, I had the salad and the lamb. The soup was delicious and the salad well dressed. The risotto was delicious, the lamb was not medium rare and was a bit cold. It is my guess, that when fist presented they had one wrong plate and rather than redo the lamb they kept it and quickly made the risotto plate, hence over cooked and lukewarm. Dessert was one hit and one miss. Hit- strawberry sorbet with strawberry coulis, miss- chocolate marble cake, dry and no real punch of flavor. The server heard we were in town to celebrate my daughter's bday after we had dessert, so he brought two glasses of champagne in the house! read more

Solid. Herb tagliatelle: the sauce was kinda sweet but lemon zest cut the sweetness and brought it to the next level. I prefer tagliatelle to b tenderer. I know I'm super finicky on pasta. Not bad as a whole. Chocolate Crepe: not so sweet. It was ok. Cassis & cab sorbet: Sorbet was not too sweet, great contrast with the sweetness of side apple compotes. A fancy meal without the intimidation of fancy restaurant etiquette! Felt like I was stepping into my aunt's intimate country cottage. We started off with champagne, an hors'durve, and large slabs of fluffy bread with butter(which i assumed was complimentary, but heads up it's not). I asked for some olive oil and vinegar, and they happily accommodated. On the $55 tasting menu (went with a large party so I got to sample both options) here's my consensus, prefer the: app: salad over the soup entree: lamb over the fish dessert: cake over the chocolate Things I would actually order again is the salad and the lamb. The salad (pretty standard), but had jewels of grapefruit which brought brightness and delight. The lamb was cooked to perfection, definition of a "perfect" bite (quite metaphorically and literally because of the small portion). The champagne was good, but can't really comment since I am not much of a drinker. To top off the night, the waiter (wished I got his name) beside being incredibly accommodating, he was also charming; and recited a poem at the end of the meal which brought delight to our table. It's fun to roleplay as the rich sometimes and enjoy a fancy meal, and I will always cherish this memory with Bouche; likely I would come again with a date or on a special occasion, but my bank account would like to think twice haha! read more

My husband and I went to Bouche to have an anniversary dinner and catch some entertainment at a blues club nearby. Let me start by saying this is our second visit to this restaurant. We had dinner there pre-pandemic and it was absolutely fantastic. However, our second visit this past week was an absolute disaster. Let me start with the waiter, incredibly abrasive, dressed in a way that it was hard to tell if he was a last minute stand in that had no waiter attire? He spoke to my husband and I was unprofessional in how he spoke to us. Next level casual, including asking me if " I knew what I was working with", when I was eating my food. Strange question, I think he wanted to know if I knew what I was eating since I picked the "Adventure" mystery dish. Now for the food itself, it was next level of mediocrity. My mystery dish tasted like Campbells creme of mushroom with a stale pastry puff. My salad was the only highlight of my meal and that I could have done at home at home easily. Dessert was blah, and we honestly could not get out of there faster. This is so sad because this was a very very good authentic French restaurant, but now, it does not even come to the level of a cheap cafe in France. I came here with a group of friends and we had booked a large table on the second floor and expected a really fine dining experience with their French tasting menu. It was a reasonable experience on a Saturday night and the place is really intimate and certainly feels French. Since it was a prix fixe menu we started with a cauliflower soup which was ok but felt like it was lacking flavor. Maybe it was too subtle for me. The lamb tenderloin was the highlight. It was a good medium rare and with the perigourdine sauce it was even better (not too sure how much truffle should be in it). This contrasted with the parsnip puree was a really fun course. For dessert they only had one pot de creme that was not sold out but it was not set and came out as chocolate soup which was really not a good look. The rest of us were served financiers which came out a bit too dry which made it hard to eat Remember that sparkling water and bread is not part of the meal so they will bring it out and charge without asking if you don't tell them otherwise. It can add quite a bit to the total bill. Our server was really nice and friendly and even recited a poem at the end of the meal. Overall I can not say that the meal was worth the price. The experience was above average but not amazing. It felt a little discordant but I think you might have a better experience. read more

On Bush Street, just a few steps away from Chinatown's southern entrance, Dragon's Gate, Bouche is a cool, intimate restaurant that serves up small plates of modern French fare. I discovered this place back in July, 2012, while walking the streets of San Francisco in search of an eatery for a late night family dinner with friends. Unfortunately, they were packed when we stumbled inside and the short menu wasn't kid-friendly to appeal to my children. Needless to say, we had to pass on them that night, but I kept a mental note on their late night hours and interesting offerings. Fast forward to nearly a decade later, Mom, Uncle Danny, and I finally hit this spot up last Friday evening to celebrate my birthday. The matchbox-size venue is bi-level with a bustling first floor that offers counter seating only. If you score a bar seat, you are treated to first row views of Chef Jeremy and team doing their magic in the open kitchen. The dimly lit second level, which can accommodate about twenty persons maximum, provides a more cozy and intimate atmosphere - a nice nook to host a private dinner party or luncheon. The restaurant staff was expecting us, not just from our reservation, but because Mom spoke to them multiple times to make sure that they would be serving foie gras and Île Flottante on the night of our visit. Moms will do everything in their power to make sure that their birthday girls get what they want, right? When we arrived, I was immediately welcomed with a warm reception of "Happy birthday" greetings and left with more well wishes. Chef Jeremy even gifted us with a round of complimentary sparkling white wine, a very nice touch. Service here is excellent. The oft-changing seasonal menu continues to be limited. In fact the Beer & Wine menu is much more extensive than their list of plate offerings. We visited when the kitchen exclusively offered a Prix Fixe Menu. No complaints here - I LOVE prix fixe menus...and $55 for an Amuse Bouche, choice of Appetizer, Entree, and Dessert is a slam dunk win in my book. After some House-Made Fougasse Bread (very soft!) and "The Adventurous" (Chef's surprise) plate of Bone Marrow, Uncle Danny and I started off with the English Pea Soup. The creamy bowl tasted good, but was not piping hot. Mom would have sent it back if she was served such a warm soup, but I was fine with the temperature. I expected the Parmesan Cheese Tulle to be crisp in texture, but was disappointed to find it chewy. Mom opted for the Salade Lyonnaise and found it just ok (nothing special). The three of us ordered the Steak Au Poivre for the entree course. Uncle Danny was not a fan of it, not sure why. Perhaps he should have added the Seared Foie Gras, like me - my plate was delectably decadent. Their version of Île Flottante is much smaller in size than I am used to, but it is still very delightful. The Warm Banana Bread was on the dry side, unfortunately. I hope that, post-Covid, Bouche will resume their late night hours. San Francisco needs to fill its big void of late night quality dining. I had a yikes experience here. First, we had the pre fixe dinner and it was good! Beet salad was tasty, lamb was cooked fine, pistachio profiterole was great. Plus, the upstairs is super cute! However, it was all ruined when I went to the bathroom. The single bathroom was inundated with pee - and it was right next to the food prep area, in full view of multiple employees. Like, three people were working with food with a direct view, two feet away, from a pee soaked bathroom and toilet. Yuck. Would not return, did not seem clean. read more

A somewhat hidden gem in the Financial District serving an affordable 3 course French prix fixe menu. Food (4.5/5): both times I have come the food had been great. The menu changes seasonally. My favorite was the first time, as they served a delicious creamy corn soup and a perfectly cooked chicken with mushroom sauce. This time I tried the sirloin and cod, which were great still. Outdoor seating - on the street, covered, but you sit at a slant, not the most comfortable but fine. We both had the Parsnip soup - pleasing flavors I had the King Salmon that came with asparagus and corn and a tarragon/herb cream - the flavors were very nice overall, I feel the salmon was not the best in quality, overall a tasty and good meal. We also had the Tagliatelle which I enjoyed. My bf (who is French) ordered the steak entree which we BOTH were not pleased with. Poor quality meat, tough, the sauce used was not right. The pre-set course was really awesome. Every dish tasted great and they had cool options like an 'adventure add-on' appetizer where you have to guess what they give you based on taste alone. Very homey inside with indoor and outdoor options. Was in town visiting from Arizona and decided to give this place a shot for brunch. We were not disappointed! Food was great, but the service was amazing! We felt truly taken care of by our server June who recommended our favorite dish (the poached egg), a delicious french rosé and the french toast as a little treat. Wish I could give 10 stars, 5 for each visit. Saturday brunch was so delightful I returned for Sunday dinner. I'm baffled the restaurant was almost empty for brunch, perhaps a one-time occurrence. But if Saturday brunch is a secret, I suggest hurrying over before word gets out. I loved my eggs meurette, and my daughter's French toast was fresh and delicious. Prix fixe menu was superb & a great value. I enjoyed corn soup, suprême de volaille and clafoutis. The wine list is creative for both brunch & dinner. This place is Extra French. From the accents, to the zealous service, to the flag. They stop just short of berets , striped shirts and a mini Eiffel. The place is quaint and they have a nice little parklet, while precariously slanted on the street, had really nice ambiance because they are one of the few places that bothered to put speakers to play their Extra French music. The owner was everywhere catering to everyone. Our server was extra social and spent a lot of time with each table and made it a real experience. However this did mean that the service was also extra slow, but you don't mind it too much because it's just nice to be out with music and nice people. The food was good but not amazing. The best thing we ate was the Fig and Chantilly which was one of the best unconventional desserts we've had in a long time. This place is both a wine bar and restaurant so if you drink you are likely to spend half your bill on booze. Plan to spend at $75-125 including tax and tip per person if you don't drink or are a light drinker. I'd come here again for the experience when I need a little French Fix. read more
