After a long day of walking, my daughter and I decided to get some dinner at Boudin's. She was craving soup in a bread bowl and I wanted some fish. Not sure if all locations are doing this, but they have a seafood special going on right now at the Embarcadero location. We ordered her tomato soup inside and then came outside to a separate kiosk to order mine. I chose salmon on a tomato salad. It was perfectly cooked salmon on the most deliciously fresh tomatoes with just the right light dressing. I want to note that I thought it was a little pricey, BUT, I know its high rent district and I appreciate that restaurants are suffering right now. Needless to say, the soup and fish dishes were both delicious and pretty close to perfect. Although you order at the register a server was bringing the food to the tables and checking on everyone to see if they had what they needed. As a side note there is a great gift shop inside as well as the bakery and a Peets coffee which I needed badly. I would definitely return! read more

This place is okay for it being a tourist spot. As expected, really crowded and the line can get long, but it goes by fast. You can buy things like bread dishes to merchandise to bring souvenirs home. You can also see them make bread at the front of the store. We ordered the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl and Dessert Waffle. I wish that the cashier would advertise that they also had the half a sandwich deal that came with the Clam Chowder Bowl that was only $1 more. Only found out after I paid and couldn't add it on after. I just went here to show my family around to do some sightseeing and I'm not a fan of clam chowder or sour dough, so remember to take those parts lightly. The Dessert Waffle was had a nice texture and tasted good with the nutella and fruit (bananas and strawberries). However, there was simply not enough nutella on the waffle. Their sourdough is very good for starters, but getting some of their other loaves proved to be tougher. Although it's not listed on their menu, they do serve breakfast sandwiches. You get to just for a variety of two choices: ham, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese on sourdough toast or bacon, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese on sourdough toast. Amazing right!? I came here today, thinking they offer the same breakfast items as those offered at the Market St./Montgomery St. location. I didn't see a breakfast menu, so I asked the lady at the counter. The person after me in line gets her order first and then I wait another 5 min. or so and I'm handed something wrapped in foil. I went here on Thursday. I tried this new bbq southwestern chicken salad. Their portion sizes are beyond generous. You get protein and all your daily required servings of vegetables in this salad. I used only the bbq sauce that came with this. The price was reasonable. This day the weather was very hot and you can sit inside and eat or outside in the plaza and eat. Lots to see sitting outside tourists and folks out for a lunch time stroll. The staff were nice and helpful when I couldn't decide what I wanted right away as it was too warm outside for soup. Boudin Bakery is a SF classic famous for its clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. I remember visiting the location at the Wharf years ago as a tourist. This location is targeted at the downtown lunch crowd which has got me to stop by a couple of times. It is located in the Embarcadero Center 4, next to Osha Thai on the back side. I generally use the online ordering tool off their website and pick up after about 20 minutes of ordering. What I like is that they have a clearly labelled section from where you can pick up on-line to-go orders so there is no confusion. One thing that I don't like is that sometimes they provide a bag sometimes they don't which makes taking everything back to office a pain. I generally get the half sandwich and soup combo ($8.79). For the soup I stick to the clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl and have tried a bunch of their regular sandwiches over a period of time. Unfortunately you can't get hot sandwiches as part of their combo which is a shame as I like to have my sandwiches toasted. The clam chowder and sourdough bread bowl are solid so no complaints about them. The sandwiches definitely need improvement. It is very evident that they are hurriedly put together and are actually very basic. I've faced situations where they have used sliced sourdough bread instead of baguette for sandwiches which shows lack of consistency and quality control. Price-wise this is really cheap for the area where a soup and half sandwich combo will run you around $12. I mean in Ladle & Leaf next door or SF Soup Company, just a soup will run you around $7 so this is real cheap. I'm also shocked that they don't add any SF healthcare mandate (I don't see a separate line item in the receipt for online orders) unlike every other place in FiDi. Can't think of a better place to carb load for the SF Marathon than Boudin! Conveniently located right outside of Hyatt and full of delicious bready foods. Naturally, I had to have the clam chowder bread bowl with a half sized caesar salad. It's a good thing it's so nice and cool in San Francisco (even in July!) because that soup totally hit the spot. The salad was also a very generous size and I was stuffed and could only manage a little piece of the bowl. Not much in the terms of ambiance - for that you'll want to go to the one at the Wharf. This is more of a grab and go or quick lunch location. I absolutely, definitely love Boudin Sourdough Bakery & Cafe, especially the restaurant upstairs! This is the second time I've been here with my husband's family (it's my father-in-law's favorite restaurant), but each time just gets better. I love the variety of seafood that they offer, such great and original combinations. Last time I had the lobster gnocchi, which was good but not mind-blowing. This time I ordered the dungeness crab cake sandwich, and it was SO PERFECTLY cooked. The lobster and crab pesto pizza sounds like it might be a strange combination - especially for a pizza - but it's surprisingly fantastic! A close second option to Breaking Bread if you find yourself searching for a sandwich shop to grab a quick lunch. After hearing all about how good Boudin from several people, I came here one day after first walking into Breaking Bread, but since I could barely even see open space there, let alone walk to the front to place an order, I decided to walk straight out and right 50 feet into Boudin. To my pleasant surprise, the line was short when I walked in so I placed my order and went off to the side to wait. And yes, there was actually open space for me to stand and breathe (very important) and a nice dining area, as well as a few busboys that were efficiently walking left and right cleaning up tables and trays. Very good first impression here! And then, literally right after I ordered and walked off to the side, I saw the line start to pile up. What can I say? I'm obviously a leader that others just naturally drawn to follow. So I'm there waiting, trying to snap a clean photo for Yelp amidst all the action from the busboys (they were literally moving as fast as cheetahs), and my order is called before I know it! I probably only stood there for 3-4 minutes. So much for trying to spend time away from the office. I totally have to say that I got the goods here. I ordered the Turkey and Cranberry (full) sandwich with a side salad and a bowl of corn chowder, and they were magnificento -- I would definitely recommend all of them. And not only did I get the awesome pricing for the salad ($1 or something) as part of the lunch combo, I also got a discounted price for my corn chowder as if I were getting the half-soup half-sandwich combo.
