I used to love coming here when I lived closer in the area. My daughter and I happened to be out running errands and decided to stop in for lunch. When we walked in , no one approached us. Took about 10 mins to even acknowledge us. We were the only people in there. After we order we decided to find a spot to eat, literally every other table was filthy and dirty with dirty dishes. I had to clean and wipe down my own table before I got a worker to help. They're are plenty of employees here working to see when they are tables that need to be clean and people to be serviced. My experience started off not so great as I had to wait for the guy behind the counter to finish up someone else's order. I stood for about 5 mins before I was allowed to give him my order. The food came out very quickly and staff was pleasant and welcoming other than in the beginning. I got the soup/salad combo and it was great! The tomato soup had an authentic rustic taste and the sourdough was good only a little salty. The Caesar salad was good but he chicken was a little soft for my taste. I ordered the bacon avocado toast and it was rather expensive. The meal was alright, nothing super special and I could have made it for much less. I've visited this location in the past, but generally prefer the Metro Pointe location in Costa Mesa. Today, I came with two other coworkers for lunch and had a horrible experience that makes me not want to visit this Irvine location again. I was the first person who ordered in my group of 3, and according to my receipt, Michael was the one who took my order. He set a number card on the counter as he took my order and asked if the other two people in line were with me - they were my coworkers. I said yes, and he mentioned that he would go ahead and put their orders on the same number. As I was getting ready to grab my stuff to leave, I hesitated before grabbing my number card, not sure if he was going to just memorize the number or not, but as he did not say anything further, I took it with me and walked away to grab a table. One of my coworkers, who was behind me, had an even more difficult time today with her food. As she was next in line, Michael apparently made some kind of comment about me taking the number when he had told me to leave it. First off, he shouldn't be complaining about a customer to another customer, nor should he have been complaining about a customer to THAT customer's friend. Even she was a little taken aback by it. Also, had he wanted me to leave the number, then HE should have politely mentioned something before me leaving because I had taken my time to pack my things up before walking away anyway. On top of that, there was only one woman working hard to serve our food and while my food came out in a timely manner, my coworker's food did not arrive quickly AT ALL. She was also a Boudin member and was told that she could not pick up her free bread until after her meal - what kind of rule is that!? She's never had that issue before at any other Boudin we've been to. Overall, we had a really bad experience today that left a pretty bad taste. Walked in there was no line, wasn't too busy. Cashier got off the phone and took my order. Said it would be out in a minute (of course I know it'll probably take 5-10 minutes) 10 minutes to by, I wait some more. 15 minutes go by and I still don't have my food. I go up to the register and this girl checks on my food. Offers me a cup of soup in the mean time, and I said I ordered soup I don't want another one. She offers me a cookie but as soon as I can respond she walks away and goes back to the register to take orders, which was very rude. Another girl then tells me they're just waiting in my sandwich, and they'll bring the soup out first. I've been to the boudin by south coast, by main place. And I've never had to wait this long. Total of about 20 minutes just to get my food. To top it off they made my sandwich wrong. I wanted it warmed. But nope. Chicken was super cold. Won't be coming back to this location again. My first time trying Boudin. I agree with the other posters that this location uses stale bread. We ordered two soups to go, two sandwiches to stay, around 11:30 AM. When we got home, I realized that the bread bowls were stale. They were even slightly cold so I could tell they had been refrigerated. When lunch just starts, you would think the bowls would be warm or room temp. I think they were hoping that the hot soup, once poured in, would cover up the staleness. The clam chowder and tomato soup was also pretty mediocre. Souplantation does a better job with the same soups and bread. I wrote a message to corporate and received an apology and a $10 gift card for the two bread bowls/soups. The quick response is appreciated but I see on Yelp that is a chronic issue. The good: Service was good. We ate in and had a grilled cheese with ham and a tuna melt. The sandwiches were very tasty and had a good texture. Unfortunately, I don't think that we will be back or try other locations unless we desperately need grilled cheese. ***Boudin is a chain sandwich, salad and soup cafe and bakery; it is not great, but it is a notch above other similarly priced chain cafes and bakeries like Panera Bread and Corner Bakery*** Boudin started in San Francisco. They have a huge restaurant and bakery in San Francisco's touristy Fisherman's Wharf. Boudin, like a lot of Fisherman's Wharf, is chain-like and okay but not exceptional. Boudin has expanded to several locations in the Bay Area and even a spot at SFO. In Southern California, they are less prominent with most locations in Orange County. This Boudin location in Irvine is right off the freeway and is a small but busy order-at-the counter spot featuring sandwiches, salads, soups, baked goods, and even a few hot dishes like burgers. Boudin, like other chain order-at-the-counter cafes, allows you to get a soup and half sandwich combo. I went with the clam chowder and their chicken pesto sandwich. The clam chowder soup was creamy and comforting. It was decent and probably a notch above the canned stuff they sell in the store (the clam chowder I had was seasoned appropriately and not salty). The potatoes were surprisingly a little undercooked with a slightly raw crispness, which makes me think the soup here could be made in house. The clam flavor was not really there, but the soup was good nonetheless. The sandwich was okay. It came with chilled chicken breast, leafy arugula, tomatoes, pesto mayo, and a strong balsamic vinaigrette that kind of overpowered the sandwich. The sandwich was served on a sourdough baguette that had a lot of chew to it. Boudin offered several baked goods like brownies and a variety of cookies. I opted for the apple filled kouign amann. This kouign amann definitely could not compare with the great kouign amann options at excellent Bay Area bakeries like b. Patisserie. It lacked the crispiness as well as the seemingly endless layers of pastry you get at those top notch Bay Area locations. It also lacked the crunchy and sweet sugar covering the outside of a really good kouign amann. When comparing this kouign amann though to the baked goods you would find at Panera or Corner Bakery, it was fairly good. The top had a satisfyingly crispy exterior and there was a light sweetness throughout. Service was good and friendly. Prices were not too bad. Prices were probably about $1 to $3 more per item than Corner Bakery or Panera Bread, but you will pay pretty much a similar total bill at Boudin that you would at those other chain cafes. Boudin is not a great soup, sandwich and baked goods eatery, but it is satisfying and a nice alternative and probably a slightly more impressive eatery than similar chains Panera Bread and Corner Bakery. Boudin is part of a retail plaza that has its own free parking lot. More parking spaces are available in the adjacent parking structure (also free). read more

I placed an orde at 515 for 615 and I even called to see if I could come at 6. 6:30 came and went and they were "still working on the order". When I asked at 6:25, I got a very rude attitude answer. I always forget about Boudin SF! Was meeting a friend for lunch and needed to be in that area so I suggested Boudin. I got the soup and salad combo -- the Mediterranean salad and the tomato soup. I'm glad I got the tomato soup because it was hearty and very flavorful! I wish I had more than what they gave me. The salad was good too except there was way too much dressing than I would have liked, but then again that's most salads at chain restaurants in the US. I've been coming here for a long time and it's no longer a matter of the food or the service, but the protection and actual interest in their customers. The powers that be did not have enough prudence when setting up their online ordering. To quote the great Orlando Bautista "An error does not become a mistake unless you refuse to correct it". That is exactly what is going on here. I started using their online ordering system for pick up very early on, then one day I get there and my food was gone. I assumed they didn't make it yet, come to figure out when done they place it out for you to grab, out in the open for ANYONE to grab. I'd been swindled. They made it right and remade my order. The 2nd time this happened I told the manager they need to change the process, nothing. The online ordering does not allow for in store payment. My tip to you is to just walk in, grab something that's on the waiting counter and walk out. Maybe some other voices will make it clear the holes in their process. Seriously a company of this size to have a security gap like this. If you are not picky, yes I'm advocating you grab someone else's meal. If you are not going to take my suggestion or listen to the letter I wrote corporate this is what will happen. I love the bread, but their sandwiches are really lacking any thought. Soup's are getting more bland and to be SF based brand there sure isn't much in the way of actual clams anymore. Just potato chowder with a few mixed in. Cheddar Broccoli is getting more and more watered down too. I love the cranberry they use and the tuna salad. It is a bit pricey, though I think the loaves are priced better than their meals and desserts, they keep well and are excellent quality, baked perfectly, crunchy, soft on the inside and the best slightly sour tang to it, makes for the best sandwiches. In the latest installment of the office lunch box roulette, yesterday we ordered from Boudin's for the first time. I think for the first time I must say, there did not seem to be one complaint from anyone in the office. Our choices were the turkey and avocado, ham and swiss, vegetarian, ham and brie, and there was one other one which had the word havarti in it. I had chose the turkey and avacado. It came with turkey and avacado of course, but also whole leaf romaine lettuce, tomato, with mustard and mayo on the side served on a hearty country wheat bread. Of course the bread was excellent, which is to be expected from Boudin, but the quality of ingredients was excellent and the portion size was generous. Very filling. THe box lunch came with chips and a cookie, which i was also impressed with. THe size of the cookie was also generous, bigger than most catering companies and the cookie was soft and not greasy. Since I liked their lunch box so much I also grabbed an extra for dinner, in which I had the ham and swiss. Also, this sandwich did not dissapoint. I really liked the ham, slices thick and not too salty. Had a good smokey flavor to it too. Hopefully we order from here again. read more

Ordered a clam chowder bread bowl 15 minutes before they closed and it was just decent tasting. Nothing compared to the clam chowder I've had at those small stands in San Francisco at Fisherman's Wharf but a tad bit better than the ones that come in a can--EXCLUDING Progresso--which I think is pretty darn good! I found it to be more "soupy" versus creamy (especially if you save it for the next day--definitely NOT recommended!) but it did have a decent amount of clams and potatoes. Their sourdough bread bowl was nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside--just the way I like it! I could tell they make it fresh but, honestly, wouldn't come back just for the bread. Service was GREAT!! Everyone was really friendly and they didn't give me any attitude for showing up so close to closing! The restaurant itself is pretty nice too! Everything is kept neat and pristine plus they have a good amount of tables to accommodate a lot of people. This Boudin is also less than a minute away from the Marriott so it's super convenient for those who are sick of eating at Soup Plantation. Overall, mediocre food and great service! The best clam chowder I've ever had was 1. Scoma's Fisherman's Wharf at Pier 47, 2. Old Fisherman's Grotto, 3. Chart House (both located in Monterey), 4. Bar Crudo, 5. On a cold day, a bread bowl filled with clam chowder is heart warming. While I think their clam chowder is good, I don't think it's the best out there because there weren't too many clams inside. I usually opt for half a sandwich and pair it with a soup (add a buck or two for bread bowl). I tried their turkey sandwich with avocado which is just mediocre. The menu is so much more extensive at the "SF" than at the "Cafes", partly I'm guessing, as a response to increased competition (i.e. Panera, Corner Bakery, Champagne's French Bakery). But since I only visit this location during lunch time, I can't comment on the breakfast or the burgers/melts. What I can say is that if you like turkey, you have to try either of the turkeys (with Havarti Cheese or with Cranberry). Both are divine, full of flavor and the contrast of texture and flavors between the turkey and the cranberry or the turkey and the cheese are great well balanced combinations. This place gets very packed during lunch time, so the best times are 15-30 minutes before noon or after 1:30pm. Bread bowl soups are super amazing and I'm seriously on a mission to try all of the different flavors. The rustic tomato soup is delicious and super creamy and the butternut squash is melt-in-your mouth perfecto! I love the bits of cranberries and walnuts on top of the butternut squash! The sourdough bread bowl is always a good idea and it makes me feel all nice and happy every time I order it. Oh the gluttony. You know what though? Boudin is just that good- you know it's super packed with carbs but you love it anyways! My goodness and the grilled cheese sandwiches! The freaking variety makes it impossible to run out of things to order here. I've only tried the apple brie grilled cheese with fig jam, but trust me.. I'm definitely trying all of the different grilled cheese sandwiches one of these days. I'm a big fan of figs and Brie cheese so when I saw that menu item I knew I just had to order it. Unfortunately I have to write this.. I rarely Yelp anything ever, however in this scenario I feel it's a duty that must be completed. If not for me for others working there perhaps will take a little more care in the details of their preparation for "customers." I love boudin and decided to order delivery.. As hungry as I was patiently waiting looking forward to my go to "classic sourdough turkey and havarti," which arrived just in time before passing out due to hunger (my own fault for not eating breakfast but I digress). Low and behold as I'm unwrapping the sandwich mouth watering, I close my eyes as I'm about to enjoy the first bite. I nearly break my teeth in half as if the bread was actually one of the plastic advertisement display models. Hard as a rock... Literally harder than a rock in fact I think I used it to prop the door open and not even a dent in the bread. Please boudin - when packaging to go food - and the bread feels like it could be used as a weapon or perhaps hammering nails.. Just do what's right for the customer.. Finally started coming back to Boudin after probably a decade, because the bf suggested it and so glad I did! This location on Main (next to Souplantation) is great, except when it's crowded. I've only been here during dinner hours, and one time, Souplantation was packed and we had to park in the residential structure which does allow some retail parking, but that's a pain. They're known for their bread bowls and it's actually not that expensive for their combos. I think it's like $8 for a huge half sandwich and a soup. You can also get salad and soup combos and it's $1 more for their bread bowls. The first time I got a sandwich and soup combo and that was just too much. The second time, I just got the clam chowder in a bread bowl and that was perfect. Their clam chowder is always consistent. And if you fill out their survey, you get $3 off your next visit, so I'm probably going to put that to good use today! Customer service is always great, you take your number and sit down. The bathrooms are clean as well. Finally, you can sign up for their rewards program right through your phone. I did it on my second visit and had the app downloaded and registered before they even rung me up. You can check in through their app to collect reward points, so hopefully there will be free bread bowls in my future! read more
