Upscale and priced to match, but the quality was good. Tried the "Fra'mani Artisan Ham & Brie" with cranberries on sourdough ciabatta and had a hard time finishing both halves, that's a lot of bread! Could have used a little mayo or at least a bit more of the Dijon mustard on there to help give it a bit more moisture, it was definitely more on the dry and doughy side. Fairly quaint place; smallish dining room, but pretty clean, and the plaza it is located in is nice. I find it pretty funny that they are located directly across a Panera Bread. The employees are pretty nice and helpful from what I've seen, although there is one guy who smiles too much. I've had the clam chowder in sourdough bread bowl, sourdough french dip, the original baguette burger, the bowl of soup and half sandwich combo, and their seasonal ham 'n brie on rosemary focaccia. Their clam chowder is delicious although just a little on the salty side, but that didn't deter me from scarfing down every last bit of soup moisture I could find. The sourdough bread bowls are cold and just slightly stale and tough, but was still fine to eat. I always find it rather wasteful when the bowl is just thrown out, so I try to eat as much of it as I can - still tastes pretty okay, but again, tough to eat and chew. There is one main complaint about the clam chowder - the parsley they top it with is way too strong. The parsley bits are not chopped enough, so it makes the clam chowder have an overwhelming taste of parsley in some bites. The sourdough french dip was quite yummy, with a good amount of roast beef with a warm and delicious au jus that had tasty, earthy notes of mushroom. At the $10 price point it is at though, and with a specialty restaurant super close by on El Camino that serves french dips, you should literally go there instead. They also forgot the side of horseradish when they served it to me. Their original baguette burger is actually pretty good! When I received it, it was toasted perfectly, and the generously thick portion of burger patty was cooked medium yet still juicy. I also liked that the onions served with were cut thinly and just the right amount to not be overwhelming or give me onion breath. Cheese is melted well, lettuce and tomato tasted fresh and crisp, and this was overall a good burger that tasted way less oilier than the standard burger. Only complaint is that I cannot taste the garlic-butter it claims to have (almost absent of garlic flavor), although I did get a hint of butter from the sourdough. Their combo deal, which seems to be a good meal to get for $8.59, comes with enough soup to fit inside their sourdough bread bowl, and a well sized smaller sandwich. I tried the chicken pesto sandwich for this, and it tasted great! Finally, their seasonal special focaccia was delicious, but only because I toasted it to be warm myself when I got home: it included applewood smoked ham, brie, arugula, cranberry dijon, and rosemary focaccia, which are delicious together, but turned infinitely better when it was toasted. All in all, this branch of the chain serves decent food. But I would not go here without a promotional deal as there are existing places with similar items that are not as expensive, and may even taste better. In my opinion, a lot of their menu items would taste better if they were toasted just a bit before serving, or if items were just... more hot in general. For example, the clam chowder would be amazing if served steaming hot, but from my experience here, it's just been sort of warm. But I understand they cannot change procedure much, being part of a chain company. Alright food with some easily fixed downfalls; lack of enticement to come here makes this place mediocre. read more

This review is for the Sunnyvale location: The Great Bacon Grilled Cheese is one of my favorites on this menu. How is that every time I ask for well done/crispy bacon they can't make it successfully? The last 3 times I have visited this location and requested extra bacon well done/crispy it's presented to me either burnt or not well done. Whimpy bacon is not crispy. Unbelievable. The sandwich goes back and they try to fix the probably. Still comes back wrong. The manager presents themselves with apologies. The last I was there, I was totally disgusted. Boudin is a solid type place with very typical types of sandwiches. I tried the Philly Cheesesteak today (a Seasonal specialty!), and it was okay. I asked them to keep off the garlic butter, which they did, but they forgot to also use multigrain instead of sourdough. In their defense, they did offer to change it out. In the end, my overwhelming hunger overcame my dislike of sourdough and I kept it as is. My larger problem with the sandwich was that it all tasted sugared. The meat, the onions, etc. It shouldn't have tasted that sweet! The sourdough made sense as the type of bread to use for it; however, the reason I dislike sourdough is that it's too hard to bite into. In fact, at one point, I hurt my tooth trying to gnaw into the bread. I tend to really like their chili, but their chili no longer likes me back. And not like 15 min before store close, either - I always visit with plenty of time available. The soup of the day has only been available less than half the time I visit. And the cashier I interacted with couldn't seem to care less. She just keeps saying "we're out," and then gazes back with a bovine stare. Well, how about go make some more? Or at least have a tiny bit more customer service attitude? "Oh, I'm so very sorry, we're out of the soup of the day at the moment, we plan to have another batch available in about 30 min. I understand this is a long time, so if you don't want to wait, we also have our regular soups, too. I recognize you, you come here a lot, right?" It got to a point where I was expecting the soup of the day to be out of stock more often than in stock. And then I realized, why the hell do I keep coming back? Then I walked out the door, this time for good. You've lost a customer and turned a once raving fan into a loyal customer elsewhere. Very sad. Long time fan of Boudin. The main restaurant at Fishermans Wharf is one of my luxury destinations when visiting SF. This is my second time at one of the newer retail stores, and I do appreciate that they're in the process of establishing and building out new locations. My diet is somewhat limited these days, and I don't each much bread due to allergies, but I can get away with some high quality sourdough from time to time, and with Boudin being my #1 I decided to give these new outlets a go. There are two locations close to home. Last week I just stopped in to get a loaf of bread - and was able to get a nice long loaf of fresh bread, sliced on the spot for sandwiches (We got a lot of sandwiches out of that loaf, and my kids loved it). Though I wasn't hungry at the time, I was surprised by some of the healthier menu options - like the new Purist Avocado Toast, and a variety of salads and soups to choose from. I decided to come back again soon. Today I dropped in around 2PM with my two sons (ages 13, and 9 - both restaurant critics in their own right). We ordered three sandwiches. I got the Toasted Chicken Club with a side salad, the 13 year old got The Great Grilled Cheese with Bacon, and the 8 year old got a simple burger with no veggies. Here's the review: After we ordered I was again stopped by the person who took the order to offer me a feed the children promotion or something like that. This is a huge turn off for me. I certainly don't mind seeing promotions like this as an 'opt-in' display, but I most certainly do not intend on visiting restaurants where I am being sold extras. There are certain restaurants that I won't mention here which I have never visited again due to up-sells like these. Not only do I think it's a turn off, it also has employees focused on 'selling' instead of 'helping' people have a pleasant experience. Add to this that the restaurant was very messy, the iced tea (which I wanted to have) was completely empty, that I pointed out to the person doing the up-sell - which she did not seem to fix. She kept flipping pages on this little booklet with the hope (I imagine) that she'd get her commission. Boo. Wrong priorities. Next, the restaurant was a complete mess (and there were lots of employees in view at the time, with not so many tables filled). We wanted to sit at a booth, and there were two available, but they were filled with dirty dishes. I sat down at one, cleared the space myself, and finally an employee came by without a word to clear the dishes, never came back to wipe down the table, and also didn't take the number from the previous oder off the stand. OK. So, as just mentioned - they use a number system to bring orders out to the tables. As we're waiting for our meal a server comes to our table (which was displaying our number) and says the names of two sandwiches we definitely didn't order, didn't seem to be at all aware that he should be looking for a number, he walked away and I watched him absentmindedly wandering around. Eventually he figured out what he was doing and delivered his sandwiches. Next, our order comes out - delivered by two young men. They call out the first sandwich, the great - and that went to my 13 year old. The burger to my 8 year old, but it had lettuce in it - despite the request for no veg. The other gentlemen didn't know what my sandwich was, set it down and said 'Uhhh, the other one'. To which I asked "Chicken club?", "right, that is the chicken club.". Neither one of them took the number off the stand, which I would have thought would be part of the 'process', since our order was now complete. Ok, so lots of management issues that need to be ironed out, not the least of which is employee training (this is assuming that there are processes for cleaning tables and serving food which simply haven't been taught, but perhaps there are not - and that would be another issue). Food review: The burger was super tasty, all three of us liked it, the baguette was fresh and soft, and it was perfectly made. The chicken club was awesome, super tender chicken meat, well balanced, but overall presentation was lacking (I posted the picture with my checkin, it's not a salad it's a pile of lettuce with dressing). 9 year old and I both liked The Great with Bacon, but my 13 year old didn't. He said bad choice on his part, next time he'll order something different. Both boys made numerous observations about the lack of management focus and dirty restaurant (they are my kids after all). I'll give it another chance or two, but if up-sells and filthy tables are the norm then one or two more visits tops, otherwise I'll just buy bread from time to time. Love the idea of these stores, and hope Boudin is committed to building something great as they expand. If focus is on quality, and well trained employees who care, then I'm all in. Been here twice in recent weeks with members of our church family at LBCSJ. Great meals were had by all including the kids. BBQ chicken salad had fresh greens and good chicken. Food is good, but the service and accuracy are super hit or miss. Today, the young lady who took our order was rude and looked as if we just stepped on her puppy. I mentioned it to a staff member/manager and he said "oh, it's just because we are busy", thereby indicating that the fast casual restaurant in question encourages their staff to be angry and rude as long as they are busy. Then when our food came, the server couldn't find us because the cashier had neglected to give us a number (I asked if she had given it to my companion and the girl said "oh yeah! I did"). Food was also incorrectly prepared, but we were too far into an hour lunch break to dare risk going back through the machinery of Boudin, so we just ate it. Boudin's is lucky to have such a diligent worker. She is always working. This location is clean, organized, and well-run. I really like Boudin sourdough bread. I even ordered it by mail when I lived in Albuquerque 20 years ago. It's lovely that there are now restaurant/store locations in the South Bay. I no longer live in SF and I'd missed stopping by a bakery cafe on my way home to pick up fresh bread. The bread and pastries remain great but my experience with their other food items has been less stellar. I visited this am and had the egg, ham, and cheddar breakfast sandwich on sliced sourdough. When they first brought it to the table, they'd made the wrong sandwich--the one with bacon on it. Normally I'd have been okay with the mistake but the bacon looked barely cooked and greasy, so I asked that they correct the mistake. The staff was very nice about that and fixed it right away. The replacement wasn't great. The scrambled eggs had an oily taste and a bitterness (perhaps something on the griddle?). The cheese was a little congealed and there was too much ham for a breakfast sandwich. It overpowered everything else. Since the sandwich was disappointing and I hadn't eaten much of it, I splurged and bought a pasty dough chocolate twist (like a cinnamon twist but with chocolate). This was pretty amazing--a nice flaky pastry and the chocolate filling had a cocoa flavor. My friend had the apple kouign amann--she was very happy with the flaky layers and the creamy inside. Next time, if visiting at breakfast, I'll stick with the sourdough and the pastries, and skip the breakfast menu items. read more

This place has by far the best clam chowder! I love their 1/2 and 1/2 menu, giving people the option of 1/2 a sandwich and soup or salad to go with it. However, more than the clam chowder and the menu choices, I really appreciate their service. One of their staff is probably one of the most attentive professional in the restaurant industry I have ever met. Her name is Lynna. We love their breads so decided to try their sandwiches soups n salad as well. My fav sandwich is the pulled pork with jalapeño bread. Sweet n salty combo is just right. Not so favorites are the salads. Moroccan salad has nothing Moroccan about it. Salad itself is fresh n couscous gives a nice texture but it was too citrusy. Balsamic vinegar dressing is good but again nothing special. Some chickpeas n little crunch is needed. Same goes for Caesar salad. Not enough grilled chicken or Parmesan cheese. Mother's Day, 5/14/17, and Her Ladyship, doe not want to go out. So, her daughter brought sandwiches from Boudin. Happiness all around. First, don't go here if you want anything related to beef. Not available, nada. Place is somewhat health oriented, which is fine. Her grace had the turkey, berry sandwich. All the sandwiches, come w/ choice of salad or chips. And all of ours had the usual green lettuce w/ sliced tomatoes. Tomatoes were nothing to write home about, store bought? Daughter had the grilled brie, and I the tuna salad. Not sure what the son had, as I blinked and it was gone!! My tuna salad, was fine, but there were just a few green specks, and some things which went crunch, when you were eating it, but the salad part really wasn't visible. The bread was interesting, in that, the crusts were quite tasty, but very tough to bite through. The bread was good though. Towards the end, I just removed the crusts, and had them later with some butter. They really were that good, would also be good crusts for dunking in a soup, etc. Salads that come with, are a mixed greens, and come with a brown dressing on the side. Size is good, or you can have crisps if you prefer. (I like crisps w/ my tuna, so I just slipped over to the larder and grabbed a small bag of Lays out : ) As I mentioned, forget this place if you want anything beef related. It's not that kind of "pile 'em high," pastrami store. Personally, I wouldn't make the drive, but the place does deserve a try, and it may appeal to some more than myself. Okay price wise. read more

My husband and I LOVE Boudin and frequent it often because of their salads (especially the Lemony Couscous one in the summer and the Moroccan Citrus one in the winter), the rustic tomato soup, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Honestly everything on their menu is great, but these are the items we tend to order over and over again. We also are part of their frequent buyer program and love that they give you a free loaf of bread each month (with one purchase that month). We are usually at the Almaden Plaza location, but yesterday we were in the area so we stopped by this location. While we were disappointed they didn't have the Moroccan Citrus salad on their menu, we received outstanding customer service. Ryan, who took our order, was friendly ... and very patient with me, as I was feeling very indecisive about exactly to order. Usually I have to wait for my free loaf of bread to be brought to the table, but Ryan took the time to slice it and bag it for me right away. We had our 13 month old with us, and he was particularly fussy while we were dining. Lynna, who I had noticed being very courteous with an elderly customer in the dining area, took the time to stop over and say hello. She made our little guy smile and then brought him a warm piece of bread shaped like a fish. That made him smile even more! She also came out with bread shaped in a turtle, and noticing that we needed to pack up one of our meals, she also brought us a to-go box. Super friendly and helpful customer service! Decided to grab some on my break. Upon ordering I also wanted to get a grilled brie sandwich with the apples and fig jam on the side as I'm watching my sugar intake as diabetes runs in my family. The gentleman at the counter taking orders, a little on the huskier of huskies side, who was probably a manager due to being dressed in a button up vs the other employees seemed annoyed that I asked for the brie sandwich with apples and figs on the side. Saying I could get it that way but I'd need to wait bc they make the sandwiches pre-made w/ jam already. The way he addressed my accommodation was rude, in my honest opinion. His huff and puff tone of voice was not ideal. The way he also let the cooks know about my accommodation still coincided with his awful tone of voice. I could hear you mr husky sir. Anyways, other than that the food was good the service however was a miss. I truly hope someone from management reads this because as a patron customer service should be courteous and respectful. You're allowed to be annoyed at patrons request but your attitude shouldn't show it. This place recently opened. It's located in the shopping center where Sprouts and Bevmo is. Anyways, I ordered the salmon BLT the other day with Caesar salad. The prices for a sandwich is a bit pricey. I think that my sandwich cost a little over $11.00 with tax. You can get either a side of the soup or a salad with the sandwich. The sandwich itself was good, and everything was fresh, but the bread was very dry. They toasted it to the point to where it would've been burnt if they toasted it any longer. For a place that's known for their bread, that shouldn't happen. I like the fact that they list the caloric content of most of the food. I like the bread that's shaped like bears and other cool shapes. The side of the salad that I got was large compared to what I thought it'd be. It was just OK. The soups do sound good, so I'll come back to try some of that sometime. The service here is OK, but it is a little slow. I came here on a weekday when there was hardly anyone there and I think that it took about 20 minutes to get my order at least. Also, I noticed that some of the tables were a bit dirty.
