I've always really enjoyed specialty's sandwiches, I'm sad the one in San Jose closed down. We come to this location once in a while. The bread on the sandwiches is what makes this place so good. While in the hood, stopped by to check out and was excited to see my fav options. Got the bacon breakfast sandwich on toasted focaccia, came with bacon, frittata (egg), and roasted garlic butter spread, and added mozzarella and basil. It was super tasty, every single ingredient, every last bite. Loved being able to customize my sandwich easily online. No interaction with staff needed as you can just pick up your order from the center shelf at arrival. I like their sandwiches. My usual is chickpea vegetarian and kids love the pulled chicken. I prefer their iPad driven ordering system. I can adjust the ingredients. Over the last couple of years, they have been making a lot of mistakes though. Like yesterday they forgot to add pickle that my kid had added. Minor annoyance, but would have preferred attention to detail. Also the tables are small and kinda sticky. They really need to do deep cleaning. Quantity is pretty good and taste is consistent. I was devastated when the Specialty's locations all closed down, but so happy this one re-opened. We had boxed lunches catered, and they were on time and filled all of our bellies. The caprese sandwich has always been my favorite, filled to the brim with plenty of ingredients on that perfect foccacia bread. I had discovered Specialty's the year before COVID and was addicted to their sandwiches and cookies. Unfortunately, the pandemic had caused them to very quickly shut down all their locations to my dismay. However, I found out this location in Mountain View was the only one standing and knew I needed to go back for nostalgia's sake. The familiarity of the cafe made me smile as soon as I walked in. Seeing the display of baked goods triggered happy memories and I needed to get my hands on my favorite oatmeal wheat germ chocolate chip cookie. I also ordered a latte and my go to pesto Turkey sandwich. Everything was flawless and exactly what I wanted. I missed the cookie so much and was thrilled to be able to eat it again. The taste and texture is unbeatable and pairs perfectly with the latte. The pesto Turkey was a little different than what I remembered (sliced green bell peppers?) but it was still tasty. I like how it's loaded with greens and the pesto spread is to die for. Happy to be reunited with a classic and will be coming back again and again. read more

My review is for a group company order. We ordered lunch boxes, and I selected the Pot Roast Beef sandwich with chips and a cookie. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the sandwich--the bread was hard, and the cheese tasted stale. I couldn't continue eating it because the sandwich was cold. This review is for catering. Catering for work events is soooo easy through Specialty's! I had pastries, coffee and water purchased for a morning meeting. The amount provided was perfect for our headcount and everything was delicious. The best part was the delivery and text updates! Delivery was right on time. And the text updates are such a life saver when you're running around making sure everything is ready for the meeting. The food comes in a reusable tote bag, which I love so we can use it again. My go to Specialty's was at Mission Square in Santa Clara. I was happy to find this location open! I would always get the Sausage Breakfast Sandwhich. Found out today that it is no longer made. So instead I opted for the Bacon Breakfast Sandwich. I asked him what kind of cheese does it have and said I would have to add it! No cheese on the sandwich? Picture on menu shows it. Perhaps it's a "serving suggestion?" Any case, I added the cheese. Food was ready in a few minutes and got it to go. I was pleasantly surprised on how good it was. The potato bun was great. I was very sad when Specialty's closed all their stores as a result of the pandemic. So imagine how I felt when they reopened this one store March 2021 in Mountain View. When will I have a chance to be in Mountain View though. So when we took the Ellis St off-ramp heading to a nearby golf course what did I spot? Yep Specialty's. But hubby kept driving. That was more than a year ago. So yesterday we were going golfing and I knew we'd be passing by. I plugged in the address on my phone so hubby had no excuse. Drove directly into the parking lot at 6:50am. They open at 7am. Open open open. It worked. They opened at 6:55am. I went inside. Already a customer ahead of me. My turn. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie please. To my dismay they don't make it anymore. They have the oatmeal wheat germ chocolate chip, the black and white, the salted rye whiskey chocolate chip, and the semi sweet chocolate and milk chocolate chip. I went with three semi sweet chocolate chip cookies. Packaged in a nice cardboard box. It wasn't until after dinner that I had a chance to open the box. Do you recall the cookies used to be like chunky blocks. Now they more like traditional shaped cookies. Tasted the same. Plenty of chocolate in my cookie. Hoping they'll expand locations. Specialty's...oh how I love you so. You broke my heart when you closed, but now my heart is mended knowing that you have reopened a location in the Bay! I have fond memories of when I used to work in the City and I would stop by for my cookie fix before heading back home on BART. I was in the area for work and I decided that I would stop by to pick up a couple of cookies to bring back home. The bakery is located near the Google campus off of 101. I came when they opened at 7am and that had a good selection of baked goods. There's also a Peet's coffee inside which is a plus! My favs are the Wheat Germ Chocolate Chip Cookie and Chai Snickerdoodle. I loved their peanut butter and apple sandwich, but I didn't see that on the menu. I miss their boxed cookie mixes and Cookie Grams where you can send a friend a yummy treat. Please bring those back! Hope they reopen more locations and hopefully expand to the Central Valley. Specialty's is a nice lunch spot that's out of the busy-ness in certain areas. It's quiet and peaceful if you need to get work done or just want a moment to yourself to enjoy lunch. The staff is very nice and they get your order out really quick. I usually get a turkey pesto sandwich and an iced vanilla latte from Pete's since it's located inside (which is convenient!). Oh yeah! You bet I took a day off to come here from SF. I missed this place and remembered the owner was able to revived the much loved Specialty Bakery in San Francisco downtown where there used to be a handful of them all scattered on One Post street right off the underground Montgomery bus stop. Now it's just a hollow empty shell of what was once was The great Specialty Cafe. But time for me to dry up those tears and be happy again as I stop by to buy out all their cookies! LOL Well I mean just get two of each flavors and I am good. Yes I am. Going to spend big on this one, but from nostalgic memory their cookies are one of the best and I compare them Double Tree Cookies. Something unique goes in the baking process for some bakeries that they have that magic touch of goodness. Next time if I come back, I want to try their sandwiches. Wow! Amazing after 5 hours driving around town in Southbay, the cookies are still fresh as ever as if it came out of the oven right now which is moist and soft. Wow! Specialty's still got it's special touch still. Lucky Mountain View has one of the best cookies that San Francisco lost. So lucky! Glad I made the detour. Would I make the detour again? You betcha! Today I ordered a usual turkey-cranberry sandwich, which was always fresh and great, and to my disappointment the bread was stale and very hard. Half through eating the sandwich I was surprised to see that almost all the greens inside were rotten/spoiled with yellow-brown color instead of normal fresh green. This is so disgusting and disappointing. I hope I won't get a food poisoning from eating those clearly expired greens. They've lost a long time customer today, and I will make sure that all of my coworkers will never go there again too. read more

Specialty's is back! I was so excited to hear about a year ago that Specialty's was making a pandemic comeback. I hope over time they can open more locations. I am still a fan of the Turkey cranberry sandwich on (untoasted) focaccia bread. The right combination of sweet and savory on a fantastic bread. I complement my sandwich with the oatmeal wheatgerm cookie. The name alone makes me think I can eat a healthy dessert. :) On my last visit, Specialty's didn't have the cookie because of some supply issue with a key ingredient. That shook me out of my routine to try their brand new red rye whiskey chocolate chip cookie. I've never had one before but what a great substitute! The baked goods are always popular and glad they still have the day old half off pastries available. The prices have definitely gone up but that's understandable. Cookies are baaaaack! A little silver lining in these pandemic times. I used to always get a cookie + sandwich or salad when I worked in downtown SF during the beforetimes. Now the only Specialty's in the Bay Area is a mile away from my Mountain View home! I came on a Friday late afternoon (~4:30pm). Parking lot was relatively empty. There were only a few customers in and most people were picking up online orders. There are stickers on the ground indicating 6-ft distancing. They were baking lots of fresh cookies so I decided to wait for them. However, after over 10 minutes it seemed like they forgot my order as I saw people who came after me pick up their food. I went back up to a cashier to check on my order but they didn't have it on record. Luckily they trusted me and were able to box up my order after I checked in with them. The cashier even threw in some extra free cookies! Some cookie flavors I tried here: OATMEAL WHEATGERM CHOCOLATE: always one of my favorite cookies! The oatmeal provided a fun chewy texture and the semi sweet chocolate wasn't to sweet. I did notice this flavor of cookie was a bit smaller than the other ones. BLACK AND WHITE: like a brownie in cookie form! Batter is chocolate flavor with white chocolate chips. The center was moist with crispy edges. CHAI SNICKERDOODLE: this one is just OK for me. I think I prefer the chocolate flavors. I didn't really get any chai or extra spice flavors, just regular cinnamon sugar. This particular batch was a bit drier compared to the other cookies I got. RED RYE WHISKEY CHOCOLATE: this was a new flavor I never tried before! This cookie is flatter and softer compared to the other cookies. There is lots of melted, gooey chocolate in here. You can actually taste the whiskey which gives the cookie an extra kick of flavor! There is also a touch of sea salt to add some contrast. This was the more decadent and unique flavor of cookie I've tried at Specialty's so far! I recommend stopping by if you have a cookie craving! I was sad to hear that they originally closed all their locations but super happy to hear they finally opened one again in Mountain View. I hope they're able to open more around the Bay Area again soon! read more

Haven't had Specialty's in over 3 years and was able to grab a box for lunch at work the other day. I got the bbq pulled chicken sandwich. Ordering online, I don't recall having the option to select the bag of chips and cookie - such a bummer. The bbq pulled chicken was okay. A little overwhelming in my opinion because it was about 50% pulled chicken and 50% slaw mixed together then thrown in between the buns. Also, it was heavy handed on the black pepper seasoning. Supposedly this option is a hot/warm sandwich option which I didn't mind.. However, the bread was not toasted at all - tasted like it came straight out of the fridge. read more

We were very excited that Specialty's is back even though it's at a location that's not that convenient. The fact that it's run by the original owner made it even more interesting -- and a place we wanted to support during takeout only pandemic days. Some things haven't changed: a dedication to high-quality and natural ingredients (see photo of napkin). And the cookies are still decadent if not a bit sweet (salted rye whiskey dark chocolate -- yes, please). On the other hand, the sandwich menu is understandable much more limited and, after trying them all, none really jumps out at me as crave worthy. The turkey was... well, boring. The pulled chicken was a little better but I wish it had some kick. I liked the roast beef but I could have made it myself. When I go to a sandwich place, I want to get something I would let make at home. I will continue to support Specialty's but I really hope they expand the menu and bring back some of the old favorites. read more

I was so sad to see Specialty's go away during the pandemic. I was happy to hear that they had been rebooted a year or so ago by the original owner. The one across from my office (that I have to occasionally go to) has been open for a few months now and it is our "go-to" for catering the office and for lunch when we are there in our 15% occupied on any day space. I have two sandwiches that I really like here, although everything I have tried is still really good. The first is the turkey with cranberry chutney. Just love it. The bread is great and the filling is better than any other turkey sandwich short of the ones we make at home in November. The other go to is the turkey panini. I love the buttery toasted bread with great filling. All fresh, wonderful and the best service around. When I am feeling like I need more middle over my belt, I get some of their cinnamon roll. Ouch! This place was huge and airy. It's located on Ellis, closer to highway 101. In fact you can see Hwy 101 in the background. It's on Ellis in Mountain View, which is the street leading to back gate of the former NAS Moffett Field. Its a resurrection or solo child of the (bankrupt) Specialty Cafes of yester years. (See KPIX story below) But nonetheless it's very inviting and staff was quick to greet and help. After a few minutes of staring at the above the counter board, I was drawn to the small glass display of sweets. I ended up pointing to a blueberry croissant, a caramel (or butterscotch) type brownie, cinnamon roll and hummingbird cakes. ALL were delish. My 2 top ones were the hummingbird cake. It was like a banana bread married a pineapple cake, imho and the blueberry croissant was buttery and the blueberries were huge and literally popped in your mouth. (Both the cinnamon roll and brownie were dry tho) Peets coffee is served inside plus they make sandwich's too. A little pricey but you'll feel "special"-ty ! We stopped by around 11:30am on 3/5/2021 to place an order for a couple of tuna sandwiches and an assortment of 6 cookies. I'd been to Specialty's a few times before, but it was more than 10 years ago to their SF locations - this was my most recent time here since they had re-opened. Upon arriving, we were greeted and then informed what to do and where to go in order to place an order, which was very helpful. The employees here were proactive and were letting customers know that were waiting in line that they can help them out, instead of not saying anything and ignoring them. After placing the order with the nice young lady who repeated everything in our order back to us, we paid (card only, they're not accepting cash at the moment), then given a pager/buzzer and waited about 5 minutes inside, at which point the pager buzzed and we were given our order. Once we got back home, we opened the paper bag and that's when we noticed it was only filled with our two sandwiches. Definitely, lesson learned to check all contents of the bag/order, prior to leaving the area of the restaurant. My boyfriend was unhappy that they mistakenly forgot the missing cookies (about $21 worth), but I was mad/disappointed at myself for not checking while we were still there and just assuming the cookies were all in the bag (the paper bag was heavy, so I mistakenly figured it must've all been in there, but in retrospect, the bag we got was too small for it to contain 6 cookies and 2 sandwiches). I submitted a form online about this issue and also called the number on the receipt that we saved and left a message with Mike, stating what happened with our order and that we are heading back to get this corrected. A few minutes later, Mike called and left a message, he apologized about the mishap and said he wanted to make this up for us, so to please ask for him when we arrived. We returned about an hour later and saw Mike and realized that he was the guy who had first greeted us and directed us when we got there the first time around and he also remembered us! He was very understanding about the mishap, pleasant to speak to and graciously offered to give us 6 additional cookies for free, on top of the 6 that we had ordered, which I was very surprised and grateful for as I did not expect this! He stated to just pick whichever cookies we wanted for the free ones and gave us his recommendation of the Salted Rye Whiskey Dark Chocolate, so we went with some of those. The cookies were honestly one of the best that I've ever had in the SF Bay Area, as good as Anthony's in SF and truly something you just can't replicate by making at home.
