I met a friend at BoulTawn's today for tea. We didn't eat. The woman at the counter was one of the most unfriendly people I've ever met, so why she selected a customer service role is a question that I will always ask of salty people whose job it is to be welcoming. You may note the parcooked/undercooked bagel, perhaps, or the closed face nature. But these only represent the surface elements of the crime. On closer inspection, we notice uncooked white onion. A war crime. We also notice the absence of the promised capers. The lack of pepper or lemon juice. The absence of any greens (a controversial subject, but well accepted.). This, members of the jury, can only be explained by one thing. This bagelry has never shown its employees a bagel and lox before, and have only poorly described it, perhaps via Google Translate. All of these are forgivable offenses, were this (for example) a Chinese restaurant. But for a place described as the best bagel in Santa Fe? There can only be one punishment. I will echo the "elementary school cafeteria food" sentiment. My bacon, egg, and cheddar was served on a squishy croissant with powdered eggs in a mould, an unmelted slice of unknown cheese (I had specified cheddar), and a few pithy slices of suspicious bacon. If you get your fill of green Chile and want something different for breakfast Boultawns has you covered. The bagels, while not traditional NY style are fresh and work really well for bagel sandwiches. They aren't as thick or heavy as traditional NY bagels which makes it easier to finish a whole sandwich. I recommend asking for cheese above and below the fillings, one slice wasn't enough for me (plus they gave me the wrong cheese) but it was still pretty good. I also enjoyed my iced latte. They have pastries on display but I didn't try one mainly because there are some best in show pastry shops in town and I figured I should stick to their core competency. read more

This is seriously our favorite bagel place in NM! We've eaten there a few times, and the food is superb (breakfast bagel sandwiches and eggs Benedict), and the coffee is solid. Service is always friendly, including the owner. The cafe is small but inviting with great artwork! We live hours away, so we get at least a dozen bagels to go, put them in the freezer as soon as we get home, thaw on the counter and they're still delicious.
