Love the history and tradition of this place. The fish is amazing - I love that it's albacore tuna so it's chunkier, meatier, and requires less batter. That being said it has the perfect amount of batter, perfectly seasoned, not oily, and just yummy - get the full basket for $2 more and share! The service is fabulous and they are SO NICE and work really fast given the small space. What a great place and while there may be a line - it's worth the wait. This place would be a five if the "chips/fries" were amazing. I didn't really like them - it's the thick cut type, but no real flavor. Anyway, I was stuffed from the fish so I only had 1. THE BEST FISH and CHIPS we've ever had. Period. This blend of maritime nostalgia blended with local flavor and fish is rare and unstoppable. Waited in a long but very worth it line for crispy light battered locally caught tuna pieces (waaay better than cod) and tasty plank fries. We split one full order and immediately regretted not getting our own each...ha! Truly delish flavorful fresh fish with an almost tempura like feel. Amazing. Fish served with tartar sauce that tasted fresh and homemade and a side of ketchup. You can add other stuff condiment wise. An added bonus- the Girl Scout Cookies available in boxes on the counter (due to time of year and somebody's quest to help the community- brilliant placement I bought 2). I didn't expect much actually. Just thought it'd be an overhyped tourist trap. I was wrong. Pretty good fish and chips with great prices. It was mostly interesting cause they use tuna versus the more common cod. I actually met a lot of regulars in line who'd been coming here for years, and appreciated that this place hasn't changed or raised prices much. Sorry to spoil the party, but I was less than impressed. I'm used to light beer battered fish, and this coating was a dense gluten. Albacore was great, as dense as chicken. Not sure if it's the food or the novel "boat food truck", but this place has it going on. Seems like the line is always about 30 people long, with about 30 minutes to get to the window. They do one thing, deep fried albacore tuna and chips (fries) and they do it well and fast. Cash only. You give your order at the first window and pay and get your food at the second, and you're on your way. Never had tuna fish and chips before so I can't honestly say how they compare. I will say I like halibut or cod fish and chips better. The albacore is very dense and meaty. I got there about 15 minutes before open on a weekday and waited for about 30 minutes. There was already a line about 15 people long. I ordered the full order (5 pieces w/ fries) because I was feeling especially hungry (and it was only $2 more). In retrospect, I would probably recommend against this for normal female appetites--a half order of 3 would've been plenty. The albacore fish was delicious (and different!) and the batter was a nice flaky, crispy, beer-flavored crust that complimented the fish flavor well. Took off a star because, while it was tasty, after a while it became very one note and I felt a little queasy (and no, this was not just because I had 5 pieces to eat...I was pretty done with this flavor after 2). I thought at first it might just be a reaction to the greasy quality of fried food, but then again, I have no problem knocking back all the fried oysters and fried chicken. I think that it must've just been the fact that the fish and chips are of a very similar flavor profile and there's no relief from that flavor. There aren't other side options on the menu to add flavor breaks either. But, this place does churn out quite a meal for not very much money. Most definitely a worth while stop when in Astoria. My husband and I popped over on a beautiful Thursday afternoon and were happy to find only 5 people in line ahead of us. The ship concept itself is very charming and the people working bust their butts to kick food out quickly. The menu is small and simple but packed with fried food flavor. We split a large order of tuna and fries. The tuna was very fresh and flavorful and well, the french fries were french fries haha! We sat at a great spot in the sun and had to ward off pigeons but greatly enjoyed our lunch on the beautiful fall day. Bowpicker is certainly a place to visit when in town - just expect a line because by the time we left there were about 10 people waiting. The batter is unique; it's soft, flaky and unlike any breading I have ever had in a batter on fried fish. It is delicious! The fresh fish makes this fried dish fantastic! The Bowpicker. Since I moved to Oregon several years ago I've constantly heard how great it is and every time I've gone to Astoria, people have been shocked that I haven't eaten there. So this summer we tried to eat there but each time they were either shut down (covid), closed (we just went on a Monday or something), Or it just wasn't time to eat. We finally got to eat there and boy was it disappointing. First of all, the Bowpicker is doing the bare minimum in terms of social distancing. Their signage seems to blame the government for making them do anything to help prevent the spread of covid at all. I saw cooks inside (after I had gotten my food) who weren't wearing masks. etc. Beyond that, the food wasn't good. The fish was battered well but it was overcooked. Overrated and overpriced. We came here because of the slews of glorious reviews. The fish were the sizes of large chicken nuggets and there were literally 7 fries/potato wedges. And quite frankly this would be ok if it tasted amazing but the fish was dry and not even white fish, batter was meh, and the fries were bland. All this for $14, a long wait in line, and them telling us that they were "running out of fish" so you have to order now.
