First of all, let me praise Julio! He was excellent in attending our needs versus our awful waiter. To begin, the waiter sloppily brought a cocktail to the table spilling all the way, without bringing a napkin, and didn't really seem to care. (First disappointment.) Next, the Caesar salad we had tonight was very bland and unpleasant, with brownish lettuce. (Hmmm.). So sad. On top of that, my " medium rare" Prime Rib, was not. It was, in all honesty kindly replaced, but disappointingly, quite sinewy and chewy. OOF, what has happened? I cannot, in good conscience, recommend the Brass Door at this point. I hope they get their act together as the holiday season commences. We truly need a consistently good prime rib restaurant here in Contra Costa county. After our dinner tonight, this is not it... Juan saved the day but the experience started badly when we were greeted from across the room by Marcus. We were unenthusiastically told that we could sit in the bar area or the dining room. We choose the dining room. Took our own seats at a table and waited a bit for menus. We asked for water and calamari to get started as we looked over the menu. The calamari came quickly and was delicious. It went downhill from there. I asked if our grilled crab sandwich could be cut into thirds for even sharing. Marcus' response was "Well that would be odd." I asked if the cook could try. It came out cut in fourths. That's ok because we didn't have to suffer through the full fishy tasting 1/3rd. Our last quarter went in eaten. The french fries were decent. The Caesar salad dressing tasted like it was made with mustard. Marcus said "No, anchovies" and offered no further discussion. We looked at him in disbelief but didn't challenge him. The seared scallops had no sear and the fettuccine sauce had no flavor. The carrot cake was warm with good texture but a little too sweet especially with the whipped topping on top of the frosting. I'd like to give a 5 Star rating for Juan who tried to help this train wreck but seemed to have been shooed away by Marcus for being nice to us. Table was not clean and he picked up a few crumbs with his fingers...as we walked in everything was dark, we asked, "Are you open?" Came here for dinner while traveling for work. It was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday. Inside of the place seems very old with the decor, but service and food were good. I ordered the salmon piccata style and it was cooked well. I subbed the mashed potatoes with rice. The vegetables and rice were not really flavorful, but mixing with the piccata sauce was good. Salmon was cooked perfectly. It just would've been nice if they had complimentary bread to start. I still enjoyed my meal here and can see it being a locals spot. read more

Service was pretty good . They were very quick . Maybe it was because it was a busy day but the meat came out too burt / charred for medium well . The lady said it was medium well but when I commented on why it was burt at the bottom she didn't comment . They did offer to replace the burger so we did . The new burger was better but still crispy / charred. I think the place just does their meat very charred. I didn't like it . Most people I saw were elderly white people so maybe they like their food like that . The ribeye was a bit fatty , as to be expected but it wasn't cooked well . It was a medium rare but some sides it was medium and other parts it was very red / medium rare . I couldn't finish the steak and it was to charred that it was not good to eat to say the least . Normally I would take the steak but the steak was so bad I couldn't take it . I felt really bad . I tried to share the steak or half of it with the family but they could t eat it . We let the waitress know that we will pay for the food but it was not good . They told us next time to let them know earlier . I figured a steak house knows to cook a steak , but I was proven wrong . I think maybe if it was not busy day the outcome would be better but I can't recommend this place if you're looking for steak or a hamburger or salmon. Brass door is a casual American comfort food restaurant. The restaurant feels like a steak place of the past where all tables had red cushy booths. Brass door has upgraded their decor to be table based. Tables have linens covered with a sheet of white butcher paper. The staff is pleasant and always helpful. The restaurant isn't into the "let's offer a different special every night." The menu is largely consistent and they just execute cooking like they did the other day. The restaurant is a nice draw for the local crowd. It is way better than the National chains like Denny's or IHOP. If you want a good meal without the pretense and price of say Ruth Chris then try the Brass Door. I doubt you will find Wagu, Kobe or a 1,000 degree broiler but I may be wrong. They also have lower priced senior menus. We were pleasantly surprised with a nice traditional Sunday brunch. We picked a sautéed chicken with gravy. That and the Asian chicken salad was great for after church Sunday brunch. The staff asked if we wanted the entreés split which is a nice touch unlike some competitors that would rather keep the chef's presentation instead of offering service. The restaurant isn't in a heavily trafficked area so you can often find a table. If your want a casual laid-back restaurant to get some food give them a try. If you want a restaurant with an hour wait and a line around the block then this may not be for you. read more

We decided to come here for Easter because it's one of those old classic restaurant that my in laws and hubby grew up with. However, today was a disappointment because of the owner's attitude. I ordered the special Easter grilled crab sandwich with fries $25. This one was so salty like as if I'm drinking a salt water drink. My mil saw me not eating it and tried it and she agreed that it was very salty. I had crab sandwiches in the past at other places and none were as salty as this place. We told the waiter about it and she was very nice and said she'll ask the owner if they can take it off. Then when the bill came, they didn't take it off the bill. So when we asked about it, the owner insisted and argued that they didn't take it off because I ate some and that they claimed they didn't add salt in it. I didn't finish the plate. I ate half of the sandwich because I didn't want to be impolite to my in laws but I couldn't do it anymore. It was just super salty. Can crabs are in salt water and they should rinse it off or something but they didn't. For the price that we paid, it was disappointing how it was handled. The management needs to improve and learn how to handle it the situation better. On top of that, the paper towel in the bathroom weren't working either. My mil had to stick her hand inside to get some paper towel. read more

I have been eating here for the last two years on a monthly basis. Usually the experience is more than pleasant and the food great, especially given the price point. However, something has changed in the last two months. The last two visits have been far less than underwhelming. One month ago, visited for lunch, and our sandwiches were not edible (both the Ruben and the Tuna Melt). Also did not receive our appetizers. The waitress told me we never ordered an appetizer. I would have expected an apology for the misunderstanding and an offer to put the order in - but no, just a comment to me that I never asked for an appetizer. Yesterday, went for lunch again. Same waitress. The appetizer of fried zucchini was burnt looking (like the oil in the fryer needed to be changed). The calamari almondine smelled fishy even after smothered in the lemon butter sauce. Pasta side was over cooked. Vegetable side was old looking. My dining partner ordered a sandwich and cup of soup that was gross looking. However, the coup de gras was a bottle of mustard that the waitress brought to the table, which had disgusting dried chunk of mustard and other stuff attached to the top of pour spout. We did not eat the food, for fear of maybe getting sick. We paid and left. read more

I had been going to the Brass Door for many years. I attended a small gathering with friends Monday evening and we all ordered dinner. First the glass of wine was sour and old. The dinner was cold. The cream spinach had no cream in it. The salad was awful. The lettuce was wet and very little dressing. The prime rib was tasteless and very thin. This is one of those places that have been around forever and with all the trendy restaurants within a five mile radius, it's sometimes nice to go somewhere where they are keeping it real. It's got the leather banquettes, bar and attracts an older crowd, but for a Tuesday night, this was a very busy place! For many months, I drank beer at the pizza restaurant across the street and gazed upon the Brass Door restaurant. I wondered, "What is it like in there? Are they friendly? What kind of beer do they have?" Then, I went back to guzzling my beer. This went on for a long time, especially since the pizza parlor offered a $2.99 beer special. Well one day I decided to give it a try and see what the restaurant was like. It probably has something to do with the fact that the pizza restaurant suddenly canceled their $2.99 beer special. On a windy Sunday afternoon, with power out across many parts of the county, we decided to give it a try. If you've never been in here before, the restaurant is surprisingly large inside. There's even a large backroom. The hostess seated us promptly. Today, we were the only party in that back room. However, it turns out there's an even more special secret back room. I thought we were in the super secret room but we were only in the semi-secret back room. Next time, I will try to get invited to that secret secret room. My wife ordered the beef stroganoff, and I ordered the classic Russian Reuben sandwich. Both were prepared to just a few minutes. My wife tells me the Stroganoff dish was very tasty. It was also quite a generous portion. When she wasn't looking, I sneaked a bite of her beef stroganoff. I agree it was very tender and tasty. My reuben sandwich was equally well prepared. It is served with the Russian dressing on the side. You can order it with either french fries or fruit. I chose the fruit, to sort of be more healthy. It's a pretty big sandwich, so I think next time we'll share one order. Naturally, I had a beer with my sandwich. I ordered a Firestone 805, which was promptly delivered. The service was very friendly and helpful. I see that they also have senior options for some of their main entrees. I will keep that in mind when I'm old enough to order a senior dish. It will be many years before I am that old. So overall, a very good experience. Now, when I sit across the street having a beer, I no longer wonder what it's like inside. Take the 1 star reviews with a grain of salt and ask yourself not whether this restaurant has gone downhill but rather why are there so many whiny little crybabies in the Bay Area now? Where did they all come from, and can we send them back? Do yourself a favor and first, don't go out to dinner on Christmas or Thanksgiving. You should've known that was a bad idea to begin with. Second, give this long standing little neighborhood establishment a try next time you're in the mood for a flavorful, perfectly cooked steak with a great server and low key but overall charming ambiance at a fair price right in the neck of our woods. I was looking to grab a casual steak/chop/rib in an area I'm not all that familiar. Came across Brass Door and it hit all the buttons. Classic old school with regulars at the bar, good selection of whiskies (except no Japanese - hmm) and I learn they are known for prime rib. I asked if they had any prime rib rare - cuz a lot of places don't - and they did and it was nicely presented and it was very good . I skipped the starches but did ask for a salad. My mistake. The prime rib was a good price but the dinner salad was a small plate with some lettuce, couple shreds of carrots and a couple slices of cherry tomatoes. $8. I'm no cheap guy and I understand where the money is made to support restaurants but that was not cool. Service was very good and the ambience was what I expected - casual, comfy, couple loud talkers at the bar talking about au jus (which was very good!) and multiple tvs set to sports. Total bill with a drink, salad and main course with a 20%+ tip was $70. Maybe next time I'll skip the salad :) read more

We had great service and we have been wanting to try it this Restuarant. The parking lot is always full. I am glad we tried this restaurant since it has been here for ever. The cheesy bread was good. The filet mignon was not. The bearnaise sauce did not taste like bearnaise sauce. I would not order that again. The salad was good. My husband prime rib looked good and he said it was. Haven't been back to this restaurant in 20 years, but we've been reading the reviews every now and then. It seems most ppl give them 1 star or 4 stars. Unfortunately I'm leaning toward the lower end of that range. Long story short, we ordered rare to rare + Prime Rib on Fathers Day. Our entrees hadn't seen rare since the Sunday before Fathers Day if not earlier then that. The server tried to do a good job, and overall they did an ok job. The ambiance was ok for a 40-50 year old restaurant. If they told us "No rare Prime Rib" we might of ordered anything else..! We've been coming here for over 30 years. Thrown several private parties here for anniversaries & birthdays. Sorry to say, the quality of the food has gone consistently downhill. Ordered a prime rib sandwich & fried zucchini's for take out. The zucchini's were burnt. Prime rib was well done when we ordered medium rare. We had to return the zucchini's. Needed to wait until the next day to speak to the manager for our refund. Hopefully he/she will be more helpful. Needless to say, we are very disappointed in this once wonderful restaurant. Restaurants such as these are rare these days and, for many, offer a nostalgic dining experience.. for whenever you want to take a break from the latest fad driven foods. The atmosphere may seem a bit gloomy at first due to the dark furniture and dim lighting, but once the restaurant starts to fill up it begins to lighten up. The staff is friendly and treat you with a unique hospitality. Even on a busy Saturday night, they take your order quickly while not rushing you to order. The food is straight forward without any frills. I don't mean that in a bad way. Sometimes you want to enjoy the simplicity and freshness of the ingredients.. like the first item we ordered - Prawn cocktail. These were extraordinarily fresh with an amazing texture. I only wish there were more. The prime rib was the star of the show. If you plan on getting it, consider getting a done-ness lower than what you would normal get for a steak. Prime rib is a very lean cut and can be drier to what you're use to. The rare cut I received was excellent. Finally the crab cakes.. this is where I felt a little disappointed. I felt that there was a lot of bread stuffing, leaving it dry and strongly seasoned. This took away from the experience. I don't mean to over analyze it, but this was a fairly pricy item so I expected more. Overall, a fun experience that brings me back to childhood outings with family and delishous food. my husband and i went to this establishment on 1-18-25 for dinner. our waiter took forever to take our drink order and also he never introduced himself at all!!!! he also took his time in taking our order. when he finally did come to take our order he had an attitude!!!! i felt like he just had a problem with us???? with that being said we did not feel comfortable in trusting this establishment or him with our food. we have never been treated like this in any eating establishment ever!!!!! to all that read this, the service their was absolutely horrible!!!! below zero!!!!! we will never!!!!! recommend this place to anyone. read more
