Perhaps going to a restaurant on Thanksgiving is just asking for trouble. The Brass Door was one of the few open to take my mother-in-law out for dinner, so we gave it a shot. The earliest reservation we could get was 6:45. After driving past it several times (it's hidden off the road), we made it exactly on time. We were seated fairly quickly. And sat. And sat. And sat. Finally, our waiter came over and took our drink order. After fifteen minutes, he came back to tell us that the bar couldn't make a champagne cocktail. So we asked to see the (limited) wine list. And we ordered the house specialty, prime rib, as well as filet mignon with Béarnaise sauce. Another long wait. And the waiter came back to sheepishly tell us that they were out of prime rib, and the filet. So we were back to square one ordering. So we ordered rib eye steaks and lamb chops. Another long wait. And the waiter informed us they were out of the wine we ordered. I said fine, just give us two glasses of dry red wine. Five minutes later, our lukewarm entrees arrived. We had almost finished them when my wife got up, went to the bar, and brought back two glasses of Merlot. But wait! It gets better! When the waiter saw we had gotten our own wine, he came over and apologized, and asked if we were ready for dessert. So we ordered the dessert for which the Brass Room is best known, their apple pie a la mode. You know what's coming, right? Yeah, they only had one serving left. Bad night. read more

Old school place in San Ramon. Forgot to get a pic of the fried calamari, but it was light and crispy! Entrees were okay - prime rib was a bit dry and chewy, even though ordered as medium rare. Rib eye was thin so a little more done than medium rare. The fettuccine Alfredo with filet medallions was pretty good. Our great waitress recommended the carrot cake with ice cream. She was right, it was awesome. Dense but very flavorful. Service was great. Might come back to have a drink at the old school bar and take down more calamari and maybe the cheesy bread. read more

Such a disappointment! My parents used to take me here for a special treat when I was young. I drove a long ways to return to those memories. Service was terrible.. rushing and rude waiter even though it wasn't busy. He never asked us about our side options. The mushroom sauce was red and disgusting.. real Italian mushroom sauce when home made and cooked a long time is brown! This looked like Ragu out of a jar. Limp overcooked veggies and foul cold lumpy mashed potatoes. Nothing authentic about it.. don't waste ur time or money! Olive Garden would be a step up. read more

A very bad experience on Monday, June 24. I ordered the prime rib. (It is a staple on their menu and I have ordered it many times before.) The waitress took my order but returned a few minutes later to say it was not available. Why? She said the chef had "forgotten" to order it. (Is it not even roasted on site? How do you forget a staple on your menu?) Also, very strange, because the guy sitting at the table just next to me was eating a plate of prime rib! So I ordered a NY steak instead which the menu stated came with a side of onion rings. Two minutes later I was served a steak with a side of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. I touched the steak - it was cold and hard, and had obviously been grilled 15 to 20 minutes ago. I have eaten at this restaurant 30 or 40 times over the last 35 years. But they have obviously gone down in quality. I will never eat there again. So sad. read more

This restaurant had a warm classic ambiance with excellent food. We had some awesome calamari for appetizer, a medium 9 oz filet mignon with bernaise sauce and creamy mashed potatoes paired with a good Merlot. We'll be coming back again. read more

With the exception of Martin (the professional bartender and ultimately our server), our anniversary dinner for three on Christmas Eve, December 24, was a disaster. Upon our entry promptly at our 7:00 pm attached written reservation confirmation, the Owner rudely informed us that she would not seat us because her latest seating time was 6:45 p.m. (not expressed on our written reservation). Since it was difficult for us to book a last minute seating at another restaurant on Christmas Eve, we insisted that the Owner seat us because there were still food servers present and many patrons were still eating their dinners at 7:00. The Owner finally reluctantly agreed to seat us and recruited the bartender to serve us. If I had read previously reviews, I would have learned that other customers have also had unfavorable experiences with the Owner. We also overheard the Owner's hostile comments toward one of her employees. Not surprisingly, the meal was a disappointment with some food items being unavailable or not properly prepared. It seemed like the cooks, like the Owner, had essentially "checked out" for the evening. I hope that this review will serve as a "teachable moment" for the Owner to seek out customer service training that she sorely requires. read more

The most horrible food experience ever. I went there for a steak around 2pm on Monday (04/18) and I sat at the bar. The service was okay but the downfall was the steak. I ordered a medium rare rib eye steak and what I saw was a raw piece of meat on my plate. I asked the bartender (as I was sitting at the bar) her opinion if a steak should be seared. She stated she doesn't know and it is basic barbecue 101. Ok, no worries. I asked for the meat piece to be seared. It comes back seared but has no salt nor any pepper sprinkled on it. Furthermore, the side dishes seem like they have been microwaved. Now, I agree that I am no Gordon Ramsay nor any professional chef but I do know my steaks. Went here for the first time on a Saturday evening. The employees were all very nice and helpful. The lighting was great and it felt like a steakhouse. We ordered the shrimp and fried zucchini appetizers. They both were really good and would order again. For the main dishes, I ordered the Steak kabob and it was okay. The veggies were bland and the rice pilaf was plain and not much flavor. The steak was cooked fine but nothing I would go back for. My boyfriend ordered the prime rib and he liked it. Said it melted in his mouth. The side of horseradish was excellent. Overall, we may give this place another try and order something else for the main plates. read more

This review is a long time in coming. Having been a frequent patron of Brass Door while it was under the management of Danny Basso, when he sold it there was a pronounced drop in meat quality. I've been back two times in the past decade and they both were disappointments. Someday I might go back if somebody can indicate to me that they have taken steps to improve the quality of their Prime Rib. Otherwise I'm smoking it myself or going to Birks in Santa Clara, or Broadway Prime in Burlingame. Not a crybaby review as Clint W indicates because I was a regular visitor here when it was good. This is an old-school place that executes the basics well. Large, excellent Caesar Salad with good flavors and not overly garlicky. Hade the prime rib and not was done perfectly. Service was excellent. Nothing fancy but an excellent meal at a fair price. read more

After 15 years of this being our family's favorite restaurant, it pains me to say I'll probably never go back after this last experience. I always order the full sized prime rib sandwich, medium rare, and used to be rarely disappointed. But you can see from other recent comments that the quality and service have gone straight downhill since the start of the pandemic, or possibly cause the Basso family no longer owns it. I think it speaks volumes that ownership never responds to scores of negative reviews. This sandwich was tiny compared to past days, the meat was well done not medium rare and had no flavor at all, and paying for an upgrade to get 5 soggy, greasy onion rings obviously wasn't worth it. They've also increased prices by about 10%-20% but their website doesn't reflect it. Despite several disappointing trips in the past 2 years, I've really tried to support Brass Door to help get them past the pandemic and some flooding last year. But I'm not paying $29 for what's shown in the picture anymore. read more

I wanted to write today and explain our experience tonight and give everybody an idea of how uneventful my Mother-in-law's 62nd birthday dinner was. To be honest with you, this had to be the worst service I've ever had in any professional restaurant. Our sever was Marco and unfortunately, had no personality or welcoming words when we sat down. When he walked up he first asked if we wanted something to drink. We mentioned that a round of waters was fine and that we needed 3 kids waters as well. Not, "welcome", "thank you for coming in", "have you been here before?", the normal conversational words you get from any professional server. He brought our waters, but only gave us 4 adult waters. Again, I mentioned that we needed kids waters. When he returned with the 3 waters they were all adult glass cups, and no lids, no straws. We just couldn't imagine why he didn't bring kids cups after asking twice. I am not sure what their policy is on straws, but he didn't ask or supply us with any. Dinner was even worse! He was very very pushy. He literally was walking away as we were giving him our last entree order, which was extremely rude. He never asked us if we wanted appetizers any sort of starter for the meal. It was also very uncomfortable while he taking our orders, and not asked any questions during that time. I ordered a Shirley Temple, and both times, I had to ask for a refill. He filled our empty water cups up once. When the food finally arrived, he made us grab our plates out of his hands. Conversely, when we were done he made us hand him the empty ones. He never said "you're welcome" when I thanked him, nor did he ever talk or converse with us in any manner. Me and family walked out very unsatisfied and disappointed. We talked about him the entire trip home and couldn't believe that people haven't said anything about his style of serving. The food was great so I am commending the chefs for that in this posting. Had lunch here today. I order crab cakes whenever I see it on a menu. I should have first read reviews. Absolutely the WORST "crab" cake (if you can even call it that) I have ever tasted. Heavily covered in bread crumbs and filler, and not convinced it was even made with crab. Was asked if I wanted one or two. Wish I had said (n)one. Got two. Ate half of one at restaurant. Packed the remaining half and the second to try later. Took one bite for dinner and threw it all out. Also ordered a cup of the beef noodle soup of the day. It was okay and nothing special, and no crackers or bread offered with it. Service a bit rough around the edges. Soup, for example, landed hard on table while being tilted, causing soup to spill onto plate. Server oblivious. Too busy yelling out to someone in the next room. Have lived in area for years and had yet to try the Brass Door and was looking forward to experience. Menu looks deceptively delish. Found that one visit was more than enough. Don't waste your time. No brass door. In fact, entrance door looks like an exterior door to a storage unit. read more

The food is horrible! It had been years since we've been to the brass door. About 10 years ago this place was very good. But now, do not waste your money. We went there on Valentine's Day. We ordered crabcakes, that had no crab! They were all breading; it only came with two, and we left one on the plate. We ordered a Caesar salad, that was made with iceberg lettuce. I ordered a ribeye steak mainly because it came with au gratin potatoes. No potatoes, no one bothered to inform me that it would not come with potatoes. And instead they substituted mashed potatoes without even asking. When I asked for some steak sauce, I was given first Street, Smart and final generic brand steak sauce! Who does that?? If you are under 55 years old and your hair is dark, do not go here. This place is mainly for an elderly clientele. read more

My family used to come here often, but tonight was my first time dining here in years. It would be a severe understatement to say that I was disappointed in the dinner I had at Brass Door this evening, which is unfortunate considering how long it's been a staple establishment in this town. Both non-alcoholic drinks that we ordered came diluted: a Shirley Temple with what looked like a drop of grenadine, a mouthful of soda, and a ridiculous amount of water; a ginger ale that was flat and had no flavor. I never knew it was possible for a restaurant--where half of the menu is steak--to be out of steak sauce. To top that off, the replacement that the waitress offered was Worcestershire sauce, which to our surprise was the generic Smart & Final house brand First Street. Every dish we ordered was bland and tasteless: - Calamari came to our table cold, chewy, and saturated in frying oil. Half of the pieces were burnt to a dark brown crisp. - Filet mignon was ordered medium rare and came well done and extremely tough. Mashed potatoes were gluey and flavorless; I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've had instant mashed potatoes that had more substance to them. Vegetables were so mushy that they were basically the consistency of jarred baby food. Béarnaise sauce tasted like melted unsalted butter and nothing else. - Fettuccine alfredo was severely overcooked and unflavored. Jury is still out on whether it was alfredo sauce or just heavy cream. Plain and simple: I'm sad to say that I will not be back to dine here. read more

Oh, how I wish I didn't have to write this. We've been to the Brass Door many times prior to the pandemic and it has been great! It was one of our go-to places for incredible prime rib. So, when I was searching for a place to go for the family's Valentine's Day dinner, I thought of the Brass Door. I read the reviews, as I always do, just to make sure they were open. I was shocked to read so many negative reviews from recent diners. Not wanting to believe them, I went ahead and made the reservation. Lesson learned - believe the reviews. We arrived at our reserved time a little early and were quickly seated. I thought it a little odd that there were no place settings on any of the tables and that only a few tables were taken (it was 4:45 on Valentine's Day.) We sat and were quickly waited on by Jill. Jill did an excellent job throughout our visit. At her recommendation, we started out with cheesy garlic bread, which was fantastic. We then ordered the soup of the day, which was clam chowder, and here is where things went south. The soup was tasteless. It was obvious they were trying to stretch things, as the soup had way to much flour in it as a thickener. The flour overrode the clam flavor and neither my wife, son or I finished the cup. Next came the main course. My wife and I both stuck with what we knew to be great and ordered the prime rib. My son ordered the filet. The meat was absolutely tasteless. The only way to make the meat palatable was to dip it in the au jus. Very disappointing. My son's filet was underdone and tasted like straight iron. Gross! Following dinner, we decided to forego the desert as we were done. As we left, my wife and I discussed the dinner. She asked me how it compared to Buttercup grill, as I have prime rib there often and find it to be pretty good considering it's a coffee shop. I told her Buttercups was FAR superior to what we had just had. Given Buttercup provides a full dinner including soup or salad and bread for $24, and Brass Doors charges extra for soup or salad and bread ($34.99 comparable) plus the $4.99 for bread, I'll choose Buttercup any day. As we left, I also noticed the vast majority of their tables were empty. Again, this was prime dinner time on Valentine's Day. This may also explain why they don't put table settings out until guests are seated. It appears the word is out. We won't be back. I don't expect this place to be around long if they're serving this quality of food. Again, it's unfortunate given the long history the establishment has in San Ramon. read more

Finally make our way to go in for a special occasion dinner and we ordered prime rib.. 20 minutes after the order we got sorry folk we ran out of prime rib. Then in place of it we order the ribeye and asked for medium cooked it came out very medium rare and was a sad substitution. The waiter was super nice but never offered a compliment dessert or something for the disappointment. Would never have went in had we known ahead and not worth the price for a steak dinner that was not cooked to how we ordered it with a lot of fat on it as well. This used to be my favorite place for a really great dinner in San Ramon, but it isn't good any more. The place is pretty close to my house, so this makes me really sad. The biggest problem here is that they have ruined my favorite meal which was Steak Shish Kebob. I always ordered it, because it included many grilled vegetables, and I am on a diet constantly. Vegetables are diet friendly, and I loved the combination of mushrooms, onions and bell peppers in this dish. In the last year and a half, I have ordered this dish 3 times through Door Dash. I was trying to support them during the covid mess. The first time, I got NO mushrooms, peppers or onions. They sent me a horrible combo of half cooked broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. That is not what the menu says will come with the dish. Also, they added some sort of chimichurri sauce, and they sent me one of the tiny containers of it, and it was only half full. And the meat was not cubed and placed on a skewer. The meat was sliced somehow and grilled. So this was a big failure. I did not know what to think. The second time I ordered this favorite, I complained that they were being very stingy with the sauce, and the dish came with the wrong vegetables. So I once again got sliced meat instead of the cubes on the skewers, and I got maybe one mushroom and two pieces of pepper and 3 pieces of onion. Mind you, the veggies were an essential part of the dish for me because of the low calories. I did get a rather huge portion of sauce with it, but the rest of the meal was gone before I could figure out what to do with all that sauce. So I ordered this meal for a 3rd time, and this time, I did not even get enough meat to make me full. Always before, I had enough out of this entree for 2 meals. So I gave up on ordering this favorite meal, and I gave up on the Brass Door. Until Mother's Day, when my daughter wanted to take me out and suggested the Brass Door. Well I agreed, and we went, but I did not get my favorite meal. I got a steak, thinking that they couldn't mess it up. I guess the Brass Door has new owners. They don't bring out their bread at the start of the meal any more. Our waiter said that they were wasting too much bread. I say they have become stingy cheapskates who can't figure out how to order. The Basso family never had that problem. I won't go here any more for my birthday celebrations. I'll drive to Orinda to the Casa instead. What a shame!!!!!!! read more

We went there for the first time on Thanksgiving. Looking for a nice turkey dinner. When it arrived at the table everything on the plate was COLD. Probably sitting on an assembly line! My plate was all white meat and my husband's plates was all dark meat. Not what we asked for. We tried to get in touch with the manager the next day by phone but she was conveniently not there every time we called. We called 5 times and she never called us back. My fiancé and I spontaneously decided to come here after work on a Tuesday evening for dinner wanting to try some place new. We first walked in and I was immediately drawn to the history and old menu posted!!?! It was the only thing I managed to get a picture of lol. We were seated pretty quickly and Hailey who helped us was wonderful!!! I had a burger and it was great, onion rings were great. Fiancé enjoyed his ravioli. This place isn't all that. We went there for thanksgiving. We had 3:00 reservations. We ordered the Thanksgiving dinner at 3:00 and were told they were running out of white meat. Really? It's 3:00pm thanksgiving and they are running out of turkey? Thanksgiving dinner is $30 a person (no bread included). The dinner resembled a retirement home dinning experience. The food temperature was lukewarm. The waiter had no personality. The only good thing about the experience was my wife didn't have to cook this year. Additionally, they have decided to require vaccination verification and I.D. on all indoor seating. They don't tell you that when you make your reservation. Their response was "policy change". The current county or even city ordnance doesn't require vaccine and I.D. verification. Apparently they feel like enforcing restrictions not even required. We won't be back to experience this again! read more

This is a great old-school 60's style restaurant. Even have the big red fake leather boots in the bar area. I came here for a business launch but this would be a great date night place. It's an older baby boomer style crowd that hangs out here, lots of regulars. The staff was very attentive and the service was great. They start you with this delicious homemade sourdough bread fresh from the oven. I could've just eaten this alone and filled myself up. They are known for their prime rib and if you like prime rib I suggest getting it this is one of the best I've ever had. I'm very picky about my cream spinach and they did not disappoint not to runny and just the right amount of garlic. One suggestion dip the fresh bread in the au jus, like I said I could have made a meal of just that alone. They have a full bar and poor generously. I will definitely be back. read more

We had a great waiter last night, his name was Kyle. Very attentive and really listened to us as well as answered questions about the menu. First time I had Salmon Piccatta (not on the menu) and it was so delicious . My friend at the table recommended it even though I have been going here for years and wrote some not so good reviews last night was an exception for great food the only downside was we were in the big room there was some LOUD men coming in good thing we had finished our dinner and left. Again, Kyle was great, since I love sushi I tend to like my fish on the rare side not well done and the salmon was PERFECT because Kyle made note about it and informed them in the kitchen. "Senior" entrées ("smaller" portions, 9 oz. is plenty big) include soup or salad, and ice cream dessert. Fantastic meal! Their wine list features Livermore Valley, Napa Valley, and other California wines. And if you don't like wine, they also have a full bar. The Brass Door has been here since 1955!!! It's older than the City of San Ramon (incorporated in 1983). You can call the Brass Door an institution. The Brass Door is a big restaurant and can accommodate large or small parties. A romantic dinner? Dinner for your family with little kids (or big kids)? Or if you just want to entertain a large group, the Brass door can handle it. This place can handle over 200 people! The Brass Door is "The local meeting place" for business and social events in the San Ramon Valley. And to top it all off, the service was excellent. read more
