This cafe and bakery is delicious! When you walk in, there is a fairly large breakfast and lunch menu, with a variety of bakery items to choose from. The staff is very friendly and I barely had to wait in line to buy my food. Aside from the outdoor seating, there is also indoor seating; which is decorated with various paintings and flowers. I ordered the House Roasted Turkey Breast sandwich The rosemary/olive oil bread was baked perfectly, the ingredients were fresh, and I really enjoyed the Russian dressing flavor. I have been to this bakery MULTIPLE times over many many years. Today I had the BEST experience EVER with a woman working there who said her name is "Cat" Catharina. She was exceptionally attentive and very polite! She was the embodiment of what customer service is supposed to be! When I was young, I worked at the Ritz Carlton, she was at THAT level of service! All of the staff there *should be* trained by this lovely woman in customer service, and I hope that the management there gives her a substantial raise as quickly as possible! LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. I visit San Diego about once a year for the sun and beaches, and this is a must visit place each time. I love their artisan salumi ficelle, and sometimes I dream about it during dark times. Their bread is so fresh and just absolutely delightful. There's that great crunch of well baked bread when you first bite into it, and then it's just pillowy softness all the way. There are so many different breads that you really can't get bored even coming here every day, and then there's soups and patisseries to finish off the meal! The patisseries here are also on point. The puff pastry is super flaky and well baked, and the flavors are fresh and seasonal. The flavors seem to change every time I come, and I'm always looking forward to trying a new pastry or pie. They've all been great. I've taken my family here for brunch, and they all loved it too! In fact, there was some low level fighting over the pastries. I stopped by Bread and Cie recently and fell in love with the food, service, and ambiance alike. They are a bakery and wholesale supplier of bread operating out of the Hillcrest area. They have a good amount of seating and glass display cases stuffed chock-full of carbs and goodness. There is cool art on the walls and a charming vintage feel. Our server was in training so he was a bit slower at taking our orders at the counter, but he was still very polite and friendly. My friend and I got the pear tart and an absolutely massive palmier. The palmier was bigger than my hand and so, so decadent. I've only ever had the ones from Costco before, and now I know that fresher is definitely tastier. It was dense but flaky, and perfectly baked. The pear tart was deceptively heavy. When I bit into it, I found that there was a TON of pear, arranged atop a buttery, shortcake crust and some kind of pastry cream. The pears tasted like they were cooked with some kind of liquor, and it cut through the richness of the rest of the tart. This was a tart I had never tried before, and it was both gorgeous and delicious. It was about $8 and well worth the money I spent. I struggled so hard to order because there were so many things I wanted to eat! I saw several cakes sold by the slice, as well as their sandwich menu, and of course, their breads. Amazing spot, went mid day, and it was a bit packed but very worth it. Starting with the drink I ordered the orange blossom oolong tea, which was literally the best tea I have ever tasted. I also ordered a slice of baguette as it's been awhile, and was craving one. It came with a number of spreads and butter options. Finally I had the avocado egg toast which was fresh, and very good. All items came out rather fast. If you can deal with the hustle and bustle of hillcrest, I highly advise getting down here. Meeting my cousin who lives in San Diego for lunch, she suggested Bread and Cie and what a wonderful recommendation it was. First the bread products are amazing as well as the pastries. Ordering is done at the counter and brought to your table when the order is ready. I ordered the heirloom tomato BLT on sourdough and it was a delightful bite after bite. My son ordered the eggs Benedict Basket and enjoyed this version while my cousin Curried Chicken salad sandwich and loved her choice as well. This was exactly what I was looking for. I am a sucker for fresh sourdough. Especially kalamata bread! Avocado toast became a staple for breakfast lately. I apologize I didn't take pictures of what I purchased but, I tried their fresh sourdough, kalamata bread and then I dove into some pastries. The ube macaroons hit all the ube notes and was a perfect balance between a not too sweet treat. The bread I can't live without. I would love to go back and try more treats. It was also great they had a parking lot. Yes, it is small lot but it's something since parking is awful in Hillcrest. The staff was beyond friendly. They have tables inside as well on the patio for fresh air or people watching. The vibe is perfect for meeting a friend or to stop and grab a bite while you work for through a lunch. First off let me say I have been coming to Bread and Cie for 20 years. Of course the bread and baked goods are delicious, you can't go wrong with any of the breads or their desserts, but I am here to let everyone in a secret the BEST item (IMO) is consistently their soups!! Yesterday I had their stuffed bell pepper soup and it was FIRE!! From their lentil soup, roasted poblano corn chowder, summer peach gazpacho, yesterday's stuffed bell pepper soup and the OG creamy tomato soup you can't go wrong with any of their soups!! I would love to know of any other establishments that offer such delicious, clearly homemade soups of this caliber. *consistent/good bakery, but not a need to go or groundbreaking when it comes to flavors on the patisserie side (no comment on bread yet) Came here as part of a quick run to Hillcrest to check off some places. Made an online order and most was ready by the time I got there (only a brief wait). When I got there at 10:30 on this Saturday morning, the place wasn't packed, but it was bustling with life as people were ordering at the pastry counter, picking up breads, or otherwise just consuming their cafe goods at the various tables. Staff was friendly and fast, and it seems this is like many well run bakeries where there was a constant restock (and they needed them). You know me, I picked up several sweets to go: bear claw, crumbonne, chocolate croissant, lemon Danish, slice of mango mousse cake, and a slice of French apple pie. Overall everything was very good; nothing was groundbreaking in their flavors but this is a higher churn bakery so everything was consistently good. Textures on the croissant and crummbonne were good (think of a crumbonne if a croissant ate monkey bread), good volume but the individual layers were not as present as similar artisan bakers. The chocolate croissant itself was actually reminiscent of ones I had across France, typical of any corner patisserie. Everything else (bear claw, Danish, cake, and pie) were well done and I can understand why they have followings for their pies and cakes. One day I'm sure I'll be in a bread mood, as this place offers many different flavors and types beginning to be an ecoutrement to your next dinner. read more

I've had this local bakery bookmarked forever. Definitely a popular spot among locals, lots of traffic in and out even on a Wednesday morning. Quick service with multiple employees taking orders at the pastry counter. Plenty of seating inside and outside. So many pastries in the glass to choose from! They all looked so tempting but I chose the pumpkin cranberry pie slice, assuming it's a fall seasonal item. A nice tart twist on pumpkin pie with a cranberry glaze on top and a pistachio rim. I was convinced to get the Croque Monsieur by the allure of bechamel. It paired nicely with the tomato soup. Loved the side of French bread, especially since it didn't tear up the roof of my mouth like most others. *** Original Visit was 11/05/2023 *** This was my first time at Bread & Cie after seeing it on social media. It was a bit loud, but it was very busy given the fact it was Sunday. The service was great, I had to change my order from a dine-in order to a takeout order shortly after my order was already placed, and the man helping me was very understanding and helpful. He brought me several boxes as well as boxed the rest of my items up to go that hadn't been brought out yet. I ordered: 1x Crumbonne 1x Avocado Toast 1x Apple turnover 1x Ham & Gruyère quiche I took a photo of all but the Avocado toast. The food was great, the turnover a bit dry but I'm not the biggest fan of them anyway. You absolutely have to get the crumbonne, it was life changing. The quiche was excellent and cheesy, but not too cheesy, and the avocado toast was good but I didn't have high expectations for toast and avocado. I will definitely be back! read more

This is a decades overdue review. I remember the day Bread & Cie opened in Hillcrest almost 20 years ago next door to Chef's Wok, the Chinese restaurant I helped manage. Charles, his wife and daughter were a welcome addition as we all tried to transform this old bank building into a neighborhood stop. It has been just wonderful to see how that little mom and pop bakery has grown! I love that I can buy Bread & Cie breads in my local grocery stores but also take family, friends and clients to the original store in Hillcrest to enjoy the tasty sandwiches, salads, coffees and teas. I still remember and miss their rosemary cookies and bread from the early days. I love everything about Bread & Cie, thank and congratulate this family for bringing this delightful business to San Diego! read more

This place used to be excellent! I used to see the owner on-site semi-regularily but not for years now. Quality is not as good it seems. The biggest change in my experiences there is the general attitude of the staff who are after curt and even rude sometimes. I miss their three rasin bread a lot. Been coming here for brunch for years. It has always been a favorite and I always take friends and family here when they visit me from out of town. Unfortunately when I went in today I had 3 different employees be unpleasant towards me. I am just genuinely very shocked this happened because I have never had bad service here before. The person taking my order seemed impatient while I was discussing what to get with my partner. Then we went to get a table outside and I asked an employee to clear the table while they were already on there way outside to deliver a coffee. They said let me see if I can find someone, then walked right by the table and ignored us (their hands were now empty and could have easily picked up the two plates left on the table). They never sent anyone to bus the table. Then we had our drink's delivered to us by a different employee and I asked her if she could clear the table and she rolled her eyes at me and loudly stacked the plates together. This whole experience was so weird!! Don't know why bussing a table that had two plates on it was such a task for these two employees. Luckily the man that later came to deliver our food was very nice and respectful and even offered to bring us extra plates. read more

The Monsieur is a panini with ham and fontina, very tasty. Lemonade was delicious. I tried my best friends salad, which had goat cheese, balsamic, candied walnuts, and mixed greens. I wish I had ordered that instead because it was 10/10. I ended up taking a chocolate chip cookie to go and it was pretty standard. Oprah would love this bakery with fresh bread, pastries and desserts. I, too, could live off of the same eating plan but add bacon. I came on a Saturday at 9 a.m. and waited 40 minutes. I came on a Monday at 320 pm and waited 40 minutes. Bottom line, you will be waiting. Actuating 3.5 Stars. I ordered the fontina grilled cheese on parmesan panini with a cup of creamy tomato soup. A specialty BLT and a side of the pickled cucumbers. The tomato soup was creamy but unflavorable. If you add basil to any dish you should at least be able to taste a hint of the flavor. If the grilled cheese sandwich had a little bit more butter, because it was quite dry, it would be considered the connoisseur of grilled cheese. By the way fontina cheese is great in homemade macaroni and cheese. I have to be fair though. My preteen says this is the best grilled cheese and tomato soup she has had and we have sample quite a few. I still would say Nordstrom's has the best tomato soup, in the category of a comparable eatery. The BLT would be a hands-down knockout if it actually had bacon. What the heck chopped bacon? This was the messiest and tasteful sandwich that I had in a while and I'm not a sandwich eater. Yet, the bacon was so skimpy bacon that a vegetarian could eat the sandwich. Hold on though. Ripe avocado, heirloom tomatoes, fresh sourdough bread and homemade pickled cucumbers---delightful. Actually it should be called The BLT salad because everything was chopped...on bread..lettuce tomato bacon. I'm perplexed. Essentially I moved all the ingredients off the bread and ate a salad with good bread. Perhaps my sandwich maker was just not in the right mood today. If you like sweet pickles and if you like dill pickles and if you like a kick of heat you are going to be enamored with the pickled cucumbers. But you have to like all three to really have your palette dance with these pickled cucumbers. The heat is not with every bite of each pickle because the vinegar balances it so I would say give it a try. Truly you either will or will not like them. Me loved them! We interacted with a few co-workers who checked in on us and we were very pleased with their attentiveness and response time. I would come here because I love bread. I also love BLTs but I like bacon on The BLT without paying extra. Bread and Cie is considered a toss up for me. However if my preteen wants to come here I won't question it she deserves every delight that her heart desires. For this small meal I paid about 30 bucks which was unexpected. My first time coming to this place 4/20. We had the egg sandwich on sour dough and bacon. We so bought croissants and coffee. The food was good. But the service not so great. It took forever for the waitress to bring our coffee like they forgot. We flagged down two staff members to remind them yet, they acted like they didn't know. However, everyone else received all of their orders in an orderly fashion. The place is clean. You can bring your pets in their outdoor area. Parking can be a bit challenging since there are a few establishments next to and across the street. There's a paid parking area in the back, but again... it's limited space. I ended up getting the kalamanta olive oil loaf. Kat offered a sample of sun-dried tomato goat cheese spread and butter since I ordered a cappuccino to dine in (I always prefer glass cups). Yesterday was my first time trying Bread and Cie. I decided to order the mini bites for a work meeting, and they were delicious. Very clean and easy to consume while still being engaged in the meeting. The guests loved them. Some things to note: I picked up my order at 10:30am on a Friday. Parking was tight, and I had to pay $1 to park in the lot adjacent to the bakery. I also had to wait about 10 minutes for them to provide me with my order once I got inside. I ordered mini bites online and also purchased plates and utensils. When I arrived, they said that they refunded me for the plates because they didn't have any. Personally, I would have appreciated a phone call with that info or plates being taken off of their website because I barely had enough time to stop elsewhere to buy plates and still get to my meeting on time. Breaks my heart to do this bc I've been coming here for over 20 years. I give the 5 stars for the jalepeno bread, rosemary bread, and mozzarella with olive tapenade sandwich (my fave!). 4 stars for the coffee with biscotti (generally). But we're not too keen on the slim sandwiches (ham/butter and salami/cheese/honey) - they were not flavorful and the bread was very hard :( We also waited 45 minutes even tho we ordered ahead 15-20 minutes :( by the time I got my latte it was cold :( we spent ~$75 on 3 loafs of bread, 2 slim sandwiches, 2 cupcakes, 2 cookies, chocolate covered macaroon, americano, and latte. I accidentally entered their cafe this morning around 7:25 am and was greeted by the rudest staff ever. An older gentlemen and a lady who rudely said I'm not allowed to be inside and that I needed to leave. I quickly apologized and exited.
