Sunday Farmer's Market in Laguna Niguel haul from Bread Artisan Bakery! 2/25/2024
    Sandra L.

It's about time that I updated my review for Bread Artisan Bakery. What can I say? I love them! If you've ever interacted with the owner or any of the workers, you'll know how nice they are. These are the most generous and kind individuals I've ever met. But aside from their service and friendliness, their baked goods are phenomenal! Bread Artisan Bakery makes such a wide variety of baked goods that I can't even list them all. They have seasonal/limited items that they sell at either their bakery in Santa or the Farmer's Market. They have an Instagram account with updates on their weekly offerings at the Farmer's Market as well as an email signup to be notified of these updates. Prices are fair considering the quality of what you're getting. I especially love their croissants/pastry items because they know how to make the pastry flaky as well as filling it with a generous amount of filling. I recently discovered that they open their Santa Ana bakery on Saturdays from 9am - 2pm in addition to their Farmer's Market locations! The bakery location is nice on the inside, but very unassuming on the outside. It is located in a warehouse looking area so make sure to look out for their sign out front.

My favorite sourdough bread in Orange county - we order it every 2 weeks, freezes well and it's always delicious.

My wife says their Kouign Annan is the best she has ever had! She is the expert. I love it too. It is rich and buttery! Also their Epis multigrain s beautiful and delicious. There is no ambiance because this is a wholesale bakery. Do not drive there without checking online. They are only open for retail. We ordered by 2pm on Wednesday, to pick up on Saturday. What a find!

Very good rye sourdough with clean ingredients no preservative. I usually get them at trader joes. I spread almond butter or jam, yum.

There was a wait for us despite coming on a weekday morning, so I can't imagine how long the line gets on the weekends. The bakery is so cute inside and everything is displayed so aesthetically! I wanted to buy them all but we ended up getting the sundried tomato, butter croissant, scallion gochujang, and ube croffle. All of them were so fresh and perfectly crispy. The sun dried tomato one had cheese too and is definitely a great savory option. The gochujang one wasn't as spicy as I expected and was more on the sweeter side, but the scallion flavor was strong and delicious! My favorite was definitely the ube croffle, which was filled with a rich and creamy ube custard. It wasn't overly sweet and was soo good! There were a few things I wanted to try but didn't get a chance to yet, like their blue corn sourdough loaf and their cinnamon roll so I'll definitely be back for more!

I love everything else about…read moreCream Pan, but honestly, the line to select your pastry and the checkout is so UN-USER-FRIENDLY. The self service, pre-made lunch bentos, sandos and sushi area is fine, but once you need assistance from a worker, it starts getting ridic. How so? You speak to whomever is attempting to assist you OVER and UNDER a twenty-four year old counter area that holds the pastries and/or through a tiny hole in the cabinets. You can hardly make eye contact with the person, because all the pastry is in between where you are standing and where they are standing. Some people are tall, some short, but regardless, there is NO WAY to have a conversation with them. They are trying to see what exactly you are possibly pointing to in the case, but as noted, you're talking thru a case of pastry. This is also true at the Fountain Valley location, where they only have a very small counter to check out with many people standing in line trying to have someone collect their order from the back. Maybe also ask WHY there is never any KINAKO donuts? I was there at 11 am and I got THE LAST ONE! If these are so popular, why don't you make enough to sell throughout the day? Every other time I've been here, you were already SOLD OUT! SMH HAS ANYONE HERE SEEN THE SELF SERVICE process at 85 degrees? All their pastry is individually wrapped and you calmly walk through the SELF SERVICE pastry area with a tray and tongs to help yourself. If you'd like to pass the person in front of you, it's easy and doable because there is plenty of room and it doesn't make anyone feel like you are taking "cuts". Once you get to the end, the cashier totals up your tray and puts it in a bag or box for you. Done & Done. Let me reiterate that your pastry and food are all above par and I know you've been in business since 2002 and let me commend you for 24 years of service, but it's time to CHANGE IT UP to a more user friendly process. It's not appealing to anyone in this busy day and age that there is a line out the door, ONLY BECAUSE THE PROCESS INSIDE NEEDS HELP! It's also more sanitary that the pastry and breads are wrapped ahead of time as I saw a fly inside the case today. Ugh.

But I can definitely comment on the price and taste. He picked up a 1/4 sheet cake for my mom's birthday for $40, and it was absolutely worth it. I love the crispy, crunchy texture and the not-so-sweet cake and creamy whipped cream. Just note this fruit cake is the most popular cake they make. This is what they're known for. Santa Ana downtown is all metered street parking so be prepared to pay for parking. The stand is located right in front of the market so it isn't too hard to find. It's in the market so there's open seating and can get quite loud if there's a lot of people. Unfortunately, I was greeted very poorly when I got here. No one was available to help and periodically she would yell over to see if I was ready to order in a very bad tone. When I asked about the cheesecake selection, she said "you have to wait 30 min." I then asked what flavor it is and she said "pandan pineapple" in an annoyed tone. I asked if there were any other flavors and she said "no because I still need to decorate. You should really come later at night." I'm used to bakeries selling out later in the day but I guess it's opposite here. As if it couldn't get worse, I asked her if there are any coffees she recommended, and she said "viet coffee." I then said viet coffee is usually too strong for me and asked if there were any other recommendations and she doubled down and used a horrible tone to say "I already said I recommend the viet coffee." Therefore I opted to just not order coffee at this time. I ended up still ordering 2 cookies: miso toffee which was too firm and the ube coconut which actually was well balanced and had a nice coconut filling. I really hope they improve their customer service.
