I found this place through Yelp reviews and was so glad we did, cute little patio that we sat out on with a view of the harbor. We had a really nice waitress (Brynn I believe) who was so welcoming. Atmosphere was great as well, we got the chicken and waffles for my daughter (I mat have eaten half) and they were delicious.I had a prickly pear margarita (yum) and my husband and I share the coconut shrimp and tuna to start, shrimp was delicious, I would prob pass on the tuna next time. The food was excellent-bursting with flavor! The French onion purses were unique and delicious, the golden tile fish was moist and flavorful sitting on a bed of thyme grains. Generous portions. The staff was amazing! We had at least 5 different staff attend to us for varying needs-ALL smiling, personable, attentive;a rare find these days. Returned to bread+bar yesterday for happy hour and enjoyed it even more than the first time! We tried two of the craft beers and a specialty cocktail and enjoyed them all. Their slider menu is innovative and we ordered all except the portobello one. Eggplant and Italian sausage versions were outstanding but honestly, they were all great! Then we tried the French onion purses, the baked French onion soup and the bacon & cheese biscuits with maple butter - wow...delicious and filling! The staff is very friendly, the bartender gave us a bit of history about the building and the owners - we're not normally ones to sit and eat at the bar but we will be from now on! What a wonderful restaurant. My wife and I just finished a delicious dinner in a pleasant spot with an upscale industrial designed interior. Our waitress Sarah was outstanding. The bread is terrific. My wife had a very generous side Ceasar salad. The presentation with romaine hearts was beautiful and the taste terrific. My arugula salad was great. We split side of risotto with Morel mushrooms and asparagus. It's a seasonal dish and well work it. I had the salmon which was outstanding and cooked to my medium rare request. This is a a fine restaurant that has an experienced chef who knows how to get it perfect. Last night I went here with my friends because we had been hearing great things about this place and hadn't been before. I got there first and asked for a booth table for three. The hostest tried to sit me at a regular table, but I just figured that maybe she didn't hear me so I requested a booth again. No biggy. Then, before my friend's even got there, and the table was clearly set for 3 and had 3 menus and I was still alone, the waitress comes up and is trying to get my food order. I politely told her I was still waiting for people and we'd order together. She then left a water decanter that was 1/4 of the way full on the table. When my friends arrived we then had to wait 10 -15 minutes for her to come back to the table, which wasn't a big deal it gave us time to look through the menu. When she came back though she looked at us with a look I can only subscribe as someone shoved a lemon down her throat. She quickly took our order and dropped some bread on our table. She didn't come back for 15 more minutes, even though one of us has ordered a drink. After 15mins she brought us our soups, even though we had ordered an appetizer of the cheese and meat platter and the soup was our entree, and still hadn't brought the drink and ignored the fact that we where out of water. After another 10mins we finally got our cheese and meat tray and the drink and we had to call her back because she tried to leave again with out even asking if we needed for water. Now the food was good, but way over priced for what you got. We got 6 half slices of bread, three pieces of each of the three types of meat and cheese, and the homemade mustard and olives, all of which was supposed to be split between three people, for $16. I also did not fail notice that the people around us, of which where dressed a little better than us and where mainly middle aged, who also ordered the sample tray got more than 3 of everything on their trays. The soup was good, but a little heavy on the veggies and light on the chicken and wild rice. But over all good. The drink my friend ordered was so over poured on the alcohol you could smell and taste it over the fruit flavors it was supposed to have. We spent an hour at this place, and our waitress checked on us a whooping 3 times, though made sure to stop at all the tables around us and talk with them. Luckily a nice bus boy stopped to refill our water. We would have left sooner if our waitress had come sooner so we could ask for the check I would not recommend going here unless you want a judgemental waitstaff who only pays attention to you if you look like a big tipper. Unless you get off on being ignored and eating over priced food. I will give them props on having a clean bathroom. They must put more effort into cleaning it that customer service. read more

Really tasty food, but, priced high with small portion sizes. Atmosphere Simply lovely. At night it's low lighting which makes for a classy and warm setting. Good musical playlist going on and has a couple of TVs at the bar that you can see from just about anywhere. Great for parties 2-5 but they do have a table for 10+ in the rear. Food Very tasty. The appetizers are quite great too. I ordered the seared scallops and they were delicious. But a really small portion. So I was still hungry afterwards and this is after eating some bread slices and they're amazing pretzel bites for appetizer. Overall Great for special occasions (graduations, anniversaries, etc). We really enjoy Bread+Bar and have been here several times. I almost always get their French onion soup. It's absolutely amazing especially on a cold day. I've had their pastas, sandwiches and salads. All are great! The last time we were there I ordered the short ribs which were fantastic! The staff is very friendly and accommodating when I bring my elderly grandparents in for a meal. I would give them five stars but the past few times we've been there the restaurant was freezing. Especially if you sit next to their huge windows. They had a portable heater plugged in near our table and it didn't help at all. I appreciate the effort but it did not hit the mark. If you go in the winter, make sure you bring a wrap or a scarf. read more

My husband and I love this place. Probably our favorite restaurant in the area! Every time I come here, my dinner is delicious and the wine selection is really great. We had our rehearsal dinner here a couple years ago and the manager at the time, Nicole, was amazing and helped us select wines, appetizers, and made sure our event ran smoothly. Such a classy place for an event like that! My hubby and I try to come back every year on our "rehearsal dinner anniversary." Everything we try is always delicious. We can never come without ordering the tartines as an appetizer, we love them so much! We'd be happy coming for just the tartines and a glass of wine anytime. read more

Had a horrible experience at this restaurant last night. Called and Made a reservation for 8pm - when we showed up, they did not have a reservation written down for us, and then lied and said they had a reservation but didn't write it down. Told us it might be a 45 min- 1 hr wait. They got us a table fairly quickly which got our hopes up, but then it was downhill from there. Took over 1 hour to get any food, even appetizers. When we asked the waitress, she could care less. Also spoke to the manager and owner who didn't apologize and basically said it is what it is. The only thing the manager said was that she would "take care of us." Final the food cake without an apology. Kids chicken tenders were 3 tiny pieces of chicken. When the check came there was no compensation. When we told the manager what she had told us, she came back and brought us 3 pieces of cake!!! When we refused the cake she finally took $20 off the bill. Horrible horrible experience. Will not come here again and will tell our friends not to either. So many other better places to go in St Joseph. read more

The bread + bar in Benton Harbor, Michigan, is a restaurant owned by the same people that own Bit of Swiss bakery, which is a world-renowned bakery. If you've lived in Southwest Michigan for a while, you may recognize the location as the former Alberts Insurance building, but with a whole new look. Large windows and an outdoor patio give fantastic views of sunsets and boats traveling the St. Joseph River. I also like that they have a giant parking lot. As usually, we did a lot of sharing. Our meal began with a Smoked Whitefish Salad comprised of crisp lettuces, almonds, Minnesota wild rice and an occasional sweet blast of cranberries. The salad is served with a maple vinaigrette which was very fragrant, yet mellow and smooth. The subtleness of the maple and smoke flavors enhanced the salad instead of overpowering it. According to the owner, everything they prepare is from scratch, including smoking their own meats and fish. What's better with salad than some bread? Bit of Swiss bread! Technically, the name of the restaurant is bread + bar by bit of swiss. (The all lowercase and + signs are themed throughout their menu and marketing.). When you're a world-renowned bakery, you might as well take advantage of your brand. The artisan breads are baked fresh daily. Next course was Grilled Skirt Steak resting on a savorous knoll of polenta, roasted tomatoes and grilled onions. I don't know what the steak was marinated in, but I want the recipe! I did learn that the grilled onions were marinated in a red wine vinaigrette that offered a sweet burst of contrast to the salt in the polenta and steak. Their menu is fairly simple, but has something for everyone; soups, salads, small plates, kids' menu and dinner entrees. Dinners range from $14.50 up to $29 for the Kurobuta Pork Chop. The lunch menu offers soups, salads and sandwiches made on their fresh-made artisan breads. They open up daily at 11am, except for Sundays when they are closed. Along with their regular menus, they typically have specials. We had the Hot Smoked Fjord Trout special, served atop soba noodles, edamame, greens, cashews and a hint of ginger. This dish had so many of my favorites! If you're watching your diet, choose fjord trout when you can. These fish store their fat in their belly, making the flesh lean and firm. Soba noodles are Japanese noodles similar to spaghetti but made with buckwheat and packed with both protein and fiber. Edamame is young soy beans before they ripen and become hard. They too are an excellent source of protein. Fresh. Flavorful. Healthy. Along with breads from Bit of Swiss, the restaurant also features desserts fresh from their bakery. We finished our meals with a superb crème brûlée with a rich custard base sealed with a contrasting layer of crisp caramelized sugars. We also demolished a mixed-berry cobbler that tasted like grandma just picked the berries and baked it up just for us. When in Benton Harbor, you've got to give it a try.
