Came here off a friend's recommendation and the baked goods did not disappoint! My friend and I split the Chocolate Babka (of course) as well as a cheesecake-flavored-sweet-kolache-type pastry since they were doing cheesecake specials that month. Both were really solid! Not gonna lie, the babka looked dryyy. But, lo and behold, it was not! The crumb was tender, and there was a lot of chocolate flavor. One thing that would have made it shine is toasting it. I know it's a tiny booth pop-up, but there's gotta be room for a little toaster oven I'd hope. Even so, it was good cold. The cheesecake-flavored-sweet-kolache-type pastry was really yummy! Not too sweet, a little bit savory, really nice soft but still sturdy texture. I'd definitely recommend trying it if they still have it, and any special they have for that matter. Haven't been to this location before, but Breads is a classic. I always love the Chocolate Babka and stopped in to pick up the new Earl Grey bread to take home. Staff was welcoming, location was clean and bright with some small tables and counter seating. Grabbed a quick bite of a pretzel, quiche, and breadstick to tide me over before heading out. I've tried some other items at their other locations that didn't hit quite as hard, so I'd give it a 4.5 but rounding up to 5. I'll have to try some of their savory food next time! read more

I went to their Bryant Park location while looking for breakfast one day. It's a small store at the corner of one their parks. I didn't know what to get so the staff were help and recommended the chocolate babka and spinach feta bureka. Upon tasting them, I was instantly a fan. I immediately finished the bureka on my walk back and upon getting to toast the chocolate babka, that was quickly devoured too. It was so good, I came back the next day to get another bureka and babka. The potato bureka I ordered came with black sesame in case anyone else has an allergy like me, so I also got a spinach feta bureka and again. Some consider theirs the best babka in NYC. They aren't wrong. The last babkas I got from a couple of well known spots have been somewhat dry. Breads' is moist and rich. If you have ever lived in Europe or a LatinX country, you know how much you appreciated being able to go to the corner every morning (what corner? any corner!) and get a fresh loaf of bread, right out of the oven. If you were really fortunate, you got a steaming hot coffee with hot milk there as well. And you also know, if you are a born NYer like I am, that the City (The City!) has every kind of bakery and lunch spot that anyone could possibly dream up. So, why go to Breads above all the others? Because it is simply the best, hands down, for the things it serves. Just look at the range in their menu -- challahs (a wide and inventive range of flavors), babkas, tarts, quiches, baguettes, cookies -- all freshly made on the premises (there are three -- I chose the 6th Avenue/Lincoln center store). And that is not even to start to mention all the breakfast choices, pizza, and sandwiches. We were heading out of the city to an event in Connecticut the first time I tried Breads. Even though I was dressed in a black and white Armani outfit that I had just gotten back pristinely pressed and spotless from the cleaners, I could not resist getting the Tunisian sandwich. Huh? When I was going to NYU, there was a nearby kiosk that offered, among other delicacies, a divine dreamwich called "Tunisian falafel". Ever since then, I have tried to find, or duplicate myself, that mysterious, elusive combination that transports one to the Maghreb instantly. Never found it, until ... Breads! Check out the ingredients they list: chunk Italian Tuna, hard boiled eggs, potatoes, kalamata olives, tomatoes and spicy harissa on focaccia. Ah! There it is, the secret sauce, the harissa. Every good cook from the region has their own version. I have a dozen of my own in my kitchen, this very day. The one at that ancient kiosk and the one they sprinkle on their Tunisian Tuna sandwich at Breads are the stuff legends are made of. You simply must try it. And yes, crumbs dotted my beautiful Armani but -- and this says it all, if you knew me -- I didn't care. That sandwich is out of this world. I literally inhaled the whole thing. Another member of our group ordered the Smoked Salmon on a Jerusalem Baguette. We put a huge bag of challahs in the back of the car, to smuggle home in our carry-on's, to Los Angeles. We all had cookies, and carried rugelach, olive and cheese sticks, and egg salad to the hotel (thank heaven there was a small refrigerator in the room) to have the next day. Take a look at the vast menu. You will not be disappointed if you order any of those. But, make sure you try a variety. Now, please, Breads, come to the West Coast! We visited Breads Bakery randomly and the kiosk-looking shop serves limited styles. Due to the narrow space, the food wasn't served warm which was kind of disappointing. We had their famous and signature Babka and mini croissant with 1 cup of latte & 1 cup of mocha. The pastries were not the best but decent with reasonable portion. We were staying close to Madison Square Park and, after seeing the reviews on Yelp, I wanted to give the babka at Breads Bakery a try. I ordered ahead because I wanted to avoid a line and also wanted to secure my order. I had contemplated getting the cinnamon babka....but they were already sold out by 9:30 am, so I got the chocolate babka instead (which I had been leaning towards anyway). The chocolate babka did not disappoint - it was tasty with a soft, chocolatey interior. The babka is ~$20 per loaf which should easily feed 4-5 people. Came to try the black and white cookies but unfortunately they sold out at 11 and we got there at 2:30. We bought the famed chocolate babka and it was very rich, moist, chocolatey without being overly sweet. It also kept well for a day before we devoured it all up. What I like a lot about this place is that they also have a bathroom, a coffee bar, and a large area of covered outdoor seating. You can actually come here, buy some pastry and hang out. I've been a patron of this bakery for 2 years now. I love their babkas. I just have to say that it makes more sense now to buy a full loaf versus a slice as I'm used to. Portions has become unbearably small and 2 inch slice doesn't match a $5.50 price point. Service usually is quick but it's sometimes strange they have 3 people working or just 1 at the time. When I went there they didn't have slices of chocolate babka so I decided to buy a big one. I asked the girl if she can cut one slice and warm up the slice for me and she didn't even hesitate to do that for me. We stayed at hotel so it was very helpful. The pain au chocolat was nice and airy and fluffy. It was also pretty large :) The egg sandwich had the best bun ever!
