I like bread. I like bakeries. So with a name like Breads Bakery, can you really go wrong? My friend's really passionate about the chocolate babka here, and the bakery was featured in an Eater article, so I decided to stop by. Here's what I got: - Chocolate Babka ($14.95) Wish they sold individual slices since they only sell whole loaves (a bit pricey). On the flip side, it's a decently sized loaf that will last and makes for a nice dessert to bring to a friend's. The key is definitely WARM IT UP before eating. When it's warm and the chocolate is oozy and goeey and the buttery layers sort of melt together-- ugh, it's hard to beat that. It's very rich; after one slice, I was content. I wouldn't mind a less sweet babka or one with darker chocolate. - Chocolate Rugelache ($2) Small & can be finished in a few bites. Almost like a mini croissant but texture-wise, it was different. Keep in mind I'm no expert since this was my first-ever rugelache. There aren't flaky layers you distinguish in each bite. Instead, it's a bit more dense with a chew to it. The chocolate filling was delicious, but again, I'd prefer it less sweet or with darker chocolate. My friend said he'd like this with a tart fruit jam filling, and I agree. I also got an iced black coffee, which is always my go-to pairing for sweets; it was solid. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try anything else, but if there was a Breads in California (*wink wink*), I'd love to return and try the rest of their pastries/breads -- especially the the cinnamon raisin babka, quiche, and the cheese sticks! read more

Everyone kept telling me how good the bakeries here at Breads, yet I was not able to make the trip. Today I stopped by, just to grab a quick coffee before work. Line was already starting to form even at 7am when they opened, yet I was able to get my cappuccino right away. Barista was friendly and nice. Plenty of space inside too. This is a decent place for a small conversation with friends, without feeling too rushed or cramped. Disgusted by the service here. I've been here few times and it's always a mess when it comes to service. Meanwhile the prices are too high for the mediocre quality of products that are offered. Went in to get two pastries, I was second in line. There was a family of 4 that was purchasing millions of items which I waited patiently for them to finish. An employee serviced me by picking out my two items and I thought I was getting checked out when the same employee started servicing a family behind me who's kids were all over the place running up and down the register. Let's just say horrible for this store not to have any social distancing in place during a pandemic as I was surrounded by too many people breathing down my neck! Then another employee at the register started ringing up the family behind me. I told her that I was next and if she can ring me up when I started getting bullied and attacked by the family in front of me for not being patient and waiting my turn. Excuse me ? Who asked you anything! Mind your own business! Then the same employee at the register started ringing the customer behind me when I again said I was next. She was acting dumb and said she didn't hear me the first time! I asked to see a manger but the manager was no where to be found. It's one thing to be attacked by another customer but the issue is when actions by employees at this store cause such an event by not servicing their customers properly! Almond Croissant was flat (as was the other 1 left) and the center was really a bit undercooked. Review got max 3 stars for the beautifully light and delicate chocolate croissant/pastry. Just very disappointed in Almond Croissant however do definitely recommend the chocolate. Service wasn't anything memorable. read more

This place is great for a snack or a coffee or picking up some pastries for a party or friends and family. There were so many choices I had such a hard time choosing. That means I'll have to go back! I got the cheese stick and the chocolate rugelach. I thought the cheese stick was amazing and I usually prefer sweet pastries to cheesy pastries. It was not dry and it had the perfect cheese to bread ratio. It wasn't overloaded and oozing with cheese and it wasn't as if there was no cheese inside. It was perfectly cheesy and I was so sad I didn't have another after I finished it. The chocolate rugelach was also delicious. I love chocolate pastries so this was PERFECT for me. The chocolate was rich and not overwhelming. It kind of looked like a chocolate croissant but with more chocolate. Babka lovers of the Upper West Side unite! The beloved Breads Bakery opened as of Thursday in the Lincoln Square area. I was thoroughly surprised and very much happy to see this bakery pop up near my home. $12.50 for a chocolate Nutella babka or 2 for $20 - probably their most popular baked item. It's delicious, indulgent, and satisfying all at the same time. Breads Bakery also has some choices for lunch food along with a vast assortment of freshly baked breeds, cakes, tarts, and pastries. They also have the Concord Cake right now, which pays homage to the old Soutine Bakery. The staff here, while they may or may not be new, are very welcoming and helpful to new customers, which I witnessed myself. Do yourself a favor and pick up some amazing babka from Breads, or any of their other delicious baked goods. I will be trying the Concord Cake next time. read more

The lattes are milky, and not too bitter. - Chocolate Babka - This is what they're known for - so give it a try. Its worth getting. - raisin cinnamon babka - it's just as good As the chocolate but hasn't had the publicity. Hidden gem. - Breads/croissants/flourless chocolate coconut cake/spinach feta croissant/olive breadstick - its all good - almond croissant !! - Samples, samples, and more samples! Not sure if its a "we just opened" thing, but the opportunity to taste before you buy really lets you know what to get. And you don't just get one item - you get to try a few Gripes - Mocha is a little on the sweet side - Wish there was more seating - Wish the Chocolate Babka came in a smaller size so I could buy and eat there. Friendly service and fresh-baked goods are always on offer at this small outpost of Breads Bakery. Discounts in the evening as they get closer to closing time. Things I don't love, here, are few. The coffee is only okay. The regular baguettes are offered a little stale, on purpose I think, but it's too much, you could chip a tooth on them. But everything else is tops. Everyone raves about the babka but, for me, the challah is king. And the fruit tarts, which can be almost comically loaded with fresh berries. And the veggie sandwiches, which are like what a kibbutz would offer if it ran a sandwich stand. Also! Breads in general is a great option for holiday goods. Sufganiyot for Hannukah, hamentaschen for Purim, and all sorts of non-leavened goodness for Passover--if you need to buy something appropriate for a Jewish holiday, and don't know what to do: Breads. Just make sure to reserve what you want ahead of time, because they'll probably run out. Breads Bakery has a great selection of pastries and breads with an extensive coffee menu also. I tried the cinnamon roll which was slightly different than your traditional cinnamon roll. It was light and airy, almost like a croissant, with a coating of cinnamon sugar on the outside. I can't speak for the other items they offer, but the a seasonal Espresso Granita is the real deal. Outside of Gelato shops, I can't think of another place that puts some oomph into this drink. They pretty much took your ordinary slushee machine and filled it with frozen espresso, sugar, and cream. I burn 5-6 bucks anytime I'm in the area and it's embarrassing from a financial perspective. However these espresso granitas are hard to resist. I felt guilty if I didn't leave a review while drinking one, sitting beneath the trees within the boundaries of Lincoln Center, and watching the ripples occurring from this light summer drizzle upon this epically large-and-serene infinity water feature. Does Lincoln Center deserve some credit? Yes, of course they do for the scenic backdrop, as they always should, but so does this granita from Breads. read more

I've been a long time fan of Breads bakery, I used to buy from their kiosk at Bryant park whenever I was around. I love that they offer savory options as well. Their croissants are buttery and flakey. Their almond croissants are on the sweeter side with a strong almond flavor. I love their spinach bureka! If you've ever had a spanakopita, think of the same filling in a less flaky croissant roll. Perfect for when you're not in the mood for sweets and looking for something quick and filling. YESSS BREADS COMES TO UWS! This place cranks out some glorious sweet and savory bread based treats, believe allll the hype. Highlights: -banana chocolate bread: not one of their more famous items and I have no idea why because this was by far my most favorite item tried. Impeccable moist texture, fully bodied banana taste, bittersweet chocolate, YUM -triangular cookies not sure what they are called. So delicious... Especially poppy and coffee flavors...but a bit pricey at $2.50 a pop (this is the same price as some of the bigger croissant pastries) -poppy croissant (I love poppy seeds so this was glorious, but probably more plain than a lot of their other items) And you probably already know this is the top babka destination in NYC. I must dock a star unfortunately because there are kinks in this new location that need to be smoothed out. First of all, the people ringing up items entered in more than we bought twice before finally getting it right. Second of all, im not sure if this can be helped because of tight space, but the set up of this location is quite odd. Some items are packaged but appear on metal racks where you would think fresh items Would be placed... While some non packaged items are sitting on Wooden racks near the door where it gets colder faster. Overall there was no rhyme or reason to why things were placed where they were. A little organization would go a long way, especially to the customer who has never been to breads before and has no idea what to buy. read more

My kids shared the concord cake for two and I only had a nibble. My family loves Breads bakery. They have the best croissants and pain-au-chocolat outside of France. If you want delicious pastries for breakfast, breads for anytime of day, or a delicious dessert, Breads is highly recommended. Everything here is amazing. Our regular favorites are the babka, rugelach, and of course the croissants. Even if you don't live on the upper west side, it is worth the trip from elsewhere in Manhattan... It is also great fun to visit during holiday time to see the special breads and desserts for the jewish holidays. Yes, it was busy. But there was no coordination between the employees working behind the counter. I ordered a Swiss muesli. The employee walked away taking one and came back asking the next customer what he wanted. I said I hadn't finished yet. Another employee finished taking my complete (a coffee and a latte). I paid and noticed I got charged extra for 2 croissants I did not order. I was told I would get it reimbursed and it would show up on my cc account. It did, but only for 1 croissant. I am not taking the effort to get this fixed again. They won't see me again. read more
