I've been passing here for some time now. Each time I ride by on my bike, or walk by, there's this wonderful baked goods scent just dancing up into my nostrils doing its best to pull me in. After having this encounter a few times, I finally gave in on a decent Friday evening and sat outside, thanks to the construction above which provided the much needed shade. 1 Reverse cookie + 1 Triple choc-chip = A GOOD TIME. Paired with complimentary water. Prices were decent for these 2, @$3 + a piece. They've also got coffee, and A LOT MORE baked goods which seem super delicious. I am a total newb to this place. I was going to see a movie at Lincoln Center and stolled by....(or tried to) and was drawn in by the heavenly smells wafting in the air. I walked in and almost passed out looking and smelling the goodies. Everyone in line (semi-long but moving fast) seemed to be looking for the chocolate babka. Person after person asked for it...only to be told that it was sold out for the next 2-hours. Mind you it was only 11:30am. Must be really good! Since this was my first (stumbled-in) visit I was happy to try something else. I ordered a chocolate croissant. O-M-G! To D-I-E for! It was so amazing. I think I swallowed it in 3 bites. Couldn't even take a picture for Yelp. ‍ SMH... I also ordered a Dirty Chai...(almond milk chai Latte a shot of espresso). After devouring my croissant...I literally had to RUN (brisk walk) out of this place. My desire to try the other baked goods was so strong... I made it out. But will definitely be back. I have lived in the UWS for over 20 years and support every small business in our area. "Breads" has excellent quality products. They are the best bakers, and I know bakers. I come from France. However, "Breads" lost a loyal customer of many years, today. And I honestly never do this, but I am very upset with today's staff. The guy that was serving me on July 1st, 2021 at 5:15PM, light color hair, was the worst jerk and the rudest person I have been served by (well I left, so he did not serve me). Just thinking about this place takes me back to the smell of fresh sweet doughy babka floating in the air, punching your senses as you walk in, begging you for a bite of the Russian baked creation. I want to jump on the train and get some right now! Walking around Lincoln center with some time to kill, I wanted to explore a good bakery with some fresh baked pastries and good cup of cappuccino. A quick look on the yelp app, and bingo!, I found Breads bakery just a few blocks up. I called my brother to see if he would like to grab a cup of coffee, and as soon as he heard where I was headed, he jumped on the bus across central park to meet me. His exact words were "Get the babka, and an extra for me to take home." Apparently he's been to one near Union Square. Breads bakery was a great experience from start to finish. I ordered a tuna sandwich as my lunch and sat outside to enjoy it while people watching. The sandwiches are fresh and delicious. I would say slightly pricey, but I am dining on the upper west side near Lincoln center, so $8 for a small tuna sandwich is pretty competitive to the area. I do believe that they use Italian tuna, which isn't that bumble bee kind you find at CVS always on sale. No offense Bumble Bee tuna, chicken of the sea is better. The staff was truly very kind and even passed around bites as a taster of their product. The parmesan cookies were nice, banana bread was good, and of course the babka was amazing. I prefer the Chocolate one, and the best part is that they give you a discount if you purchase 2. We sat outside with a warmed up babka, we asked, on a wooden board, with a steak knife, ready to devour. Sweet babka with a great brewed coffee really made my day. I even took one to my boss and he absolutely loved it. I look forward to trying some of their other pastries, specifically, the chocolate mousse puff for two, its next on my list. My favorite bread place in NYC! Great setup.. there are some pastries and bread you can serve yourself and then stand in line to checkout where they have even more delicious things. The sesame baguette is my ultimate favorite. Every time I come to NYC I get dozens to take back with me home. Although they do get quite hard the next day so it's better to eat them fresh. The chocolate babka is good... chocolatey and soft. The cheese sticks taste like a croissant with cheese in top- so soft and buttery... taste like heaven. Delicious. We tried the spinach and feta bureka and the rhubarb danish. The burkea was delicious, perfectly baked with the right amount of filling. Would've been world class if it were warm. When you take dough and and spread NUTELLA, a processed, 13 percent hazelnut , and filled with palm oil mixture, onto dough, that is not acceptable. A huge fan of the Union Square location and Bryant Park kiosk, I was very excited to stop by their large UWS/Columbus Circle/Lincoln Center addition to the baked good murderer's row on Broadway for the much-publicized concord cake (chocolate mousse topped with shards of chocolate meringue). I was expecting to arrive and find one or two concord cakes left at 5pm, yet found a jam-packed display that was seemingly untouched. The confection definitely had strokes of brilliance, but when I drop $11.95 on something (claim it's 'for two' all you want), I expect it to not stick to its serving vessel and be packed poorly.
