Noticed Breads Bakery from across the street. Usually, go to a Pret A Manger or Starbucks. So, try new place this time. As I walked in on a Saturday around 12:30 pm there were lots of people. Searched for something to snack on like a salad or sandwich. There were more baked items in display cases as you enter and at the counter further up. Saw Babka, honey cake, croissants, etc... Found area where they had salads and prepared meals. Went for the Salmon with cream cheese on Sourdough bread. The line was confusing. I got on the line. Some people got off cause they were looking around. I came up to counter. Staff said that all you getting. I said I also wanted a large Cappuccino. Staff directed me to go to other end. Saw another staff making coffee. I stood on that line. One customer said she did not know where line was. By the time, I went to place order, the staff making coffee said I have to pay first. I told her staff mate at counter said go where you are. At least, I gave her the order. Then, I went to another line to pay. Couple of things 1) Once they rang up order. The computer ask if you want to add tip. You gotta be kidding. I did self servIce. No need to tip. I went on three different lines. 2) I had to ask for bag. 3) The cashier asked what kind of milk after I had placed the order. After paying for everything, got back online for the Cappuccino. The staff made coffee for someone else. I was happy I was out of this place. What an ordeal just to get two items. Found their baked item to be tad expensive. You can get Babka elsewhere. It looks like the chocolate babka is one of their most popular items (and for good reason-- it's delicious), but here's a hot take: they also have one of the best cheesecakes in NYC. It's obviously subjective to some extent, but here's the cheesecake analysis you never asked for: there's usually a tradeoff between texture and flavor-- meaning, very dense cheesecakes tend to be full of flavor (e.g. Junior's) and fluffier cheesecakes tend to be lighter in flavor (e.g. the jiggly Japanese cheesecakes). I've been hearing great reviews about Breads Bakery but today I experienced it for myself when we walked into their store on Broadway near Lincoln Center. Their chocolate Babkas looked fantastic and were selling as quickly as the staff were restocking their shelves. We went in to look for something " healthy" and ended up splitting a delicious tuna salad with a sliced hard boiled egg on a roll. We also splurged on something I never saw before: a ruggalach sandwich! It has to be one of the most decadent and delightfully yummy desserts I've ever tasted. This place has the very best rugelach I've ever tasted. (I love their rugelach sandwiches filled with chocolate ganache, strawberries, and cream, too.) The croissants and chocolate babkas are also up there. Everything has always been fresh out of the oven when I've stopped by. It's my regular stop for a snack (usually a chocolate croissant) and coffee following a long run in Central Park. While I'm generally please with the baked goods at Breads bakery , their Union Square location is a lot better . Not only is this uptown location smaller ,but if you're getting to this uptown location nearing closing hours and expecting to get your goods discounted a la the union square location you will be in for some disappointment. Merely 30 mins before closing I was told by I think her name was Sofee that," We don't do that at this location" . Got afew things here and they were good but not as super fresh as I normally get downtown. I'd probably try to stick to the union square location as their goods do tend to be fresher with higher turnover ,more familiar faces and yes occasional discounted goods around closing hours. read more

They have all the same incredible stuff they have at the original location, like the cheese straws, croissants, rugelach, and most importantly, the Chocolate Babka. Everyone was masked and they took extra precautions with receiving my credit card. Got the usual, almond croissant and pan au chocolat; both are great. Only been to this location once though bought from both there Bryant Park kiosk and main location before. Other than a couple things they seem to be running smoothly during covid. Odd they require dropping of credit card on cutting board but do not have plexiglass in front of employees. Baked items looked like same amount and quiche which never had before was very good. Overall - Amazing chocolate rugelach! What I got - chocolate rugelach, rugelach sandwich Taste - Amazing. The flavor of the chocolate rugelach is almost exactly like the chocolate babka. The difference is in the texture. The rugelach is rolled pastry similar to a croissant but not quite the same. Whereas the babka is clearly a bread with density. The rugelach is soft, flaky, and unquestionably freshly made like everything here. I like to eat it layer by layer. The chocolate is, in my opinion, the perfect amount of sweet. The rugelach sandwich is made from the chocolate rugelach but sliced in half and stuffed with nutella, strawberries, and some sort of white cream. My wife loves them! Value - great, the prices are average but the quality is much better than average. Service - good, counter service, staff looks happy and smiles Atmosphere - casual, good music, relaxed Facility - busy on a Sunday but not so much that there is a huge line. You can get in and out very fast. Worth the hype! So, I wait the entire year for my Sufganiyot fix (Hannukah doughnuts). I was in the city and wanted to try Breads considering it was opened by my fellow Israelis, and that's definitely a good standard for authenticity. Well, let me tell you, the strawberry jelly (traditional) is definitely delicious and authentic. The issue that I find in many places is that they dilute the jam and add sugar for flavor, and that results in runny jelly and mess. The doughnut at Breads had the thick consistency, and strong strawberry flavor. Simply delicious. Now, the caramel (dulce de leche) is devine! Honestly, if there was a Sufganiya perfection, it would be this combination. Honestly, words cannot describe this deliciousness, and I completely understand a line outside. Really good food but a little stressful during covid. There's usually a line out the door and the people that work there are trying very hard to get you in and out as fast as possible. No one has ever been mean or rude to me there, but every interaction has felt very urgent. That said, everything tastes great. I love the salmon sandwiches and the bourekas. Walking down Broadway I passed by Breads as the door was opening for a patron to walk into the store. Upon smelling the wonderful aroma I quickly followed the person into the store and was so happy I did. The selections were so numerous and each one looked better that the previous one, but not wanting to over eat I selected a chocolate croissant and a cappuccino. Both were so good!! I enjoyed by choice so much that the next day after getting of the subway after a Yankee game and walking back to my hotel my son and I stopped in again (at 10:30 PM!) for more pastries and 5 rugelachs. We hurried back to the hotel so that we could enjoy our late night snacks, diet be damned! My favorite neighborhood bakery and coffee shop! We recently moved just 5 blocks south from our previous apartment but this would mean a change on our routine coffee place. Breads Bakery has proven to be our favorite new place! The staff is wonderful and friendly, they are pleasant to be around which is important at 8a! The store is organized and prices/products are clearly labeled. Coffees and Teas are great but their bread and pastries are delicious. I grab a chocolate babka for when people are in town - it doesn't disappoint. My husband's favorite is the Snoked Cheddar Croissants. Also, they have seasonal items which are always delicious. I'm excited to try their pies for this year's Thanksgiving! Also, strollers can get in but sometimes difficult on busy busy days but everyone is usually accommodating. Headed to Central Park after a jet lagged night's sleep, Breads appeared to be the best option for a local cuppa pick-us-up; while NYC offers pretty much every food & drink option on the planet, Seattlebucks has taken over so much of the coffee real estate, it's often hard to find a local latte. Really great baked goods, not so great service. I am writing this after holding it in for three visits in the past but now strangely bothered and unable to forget about what is seemingly trivial...and while our family will continue to eat their goods, I will not be visiting the store myself any longer. First, the usual cashier I see there can brush up on her common etiquette to ALL customers by offering them a bag and saying thank you when the sale is over. There's no need to treat me like some non English-speaking Asian tourist by curtly telling me that I need to pay when I'm simply trying to bring up my card on my Apple watch to scan. Brevity, if that's the "reason," is not always a forte. Second, the staff behind the counter, while usually helpful and generally friendly, can improve on the following: 1) don't yell at customers who may inadvertently point at baked goods over the glass divider (because the staff cannot always hear them speaking with masks on in that loud and super-crowded store) and instead put up a sign saying so visibly and then politely remind customers when they violate the rule; and 2) focus on who's in line waiting their turn instead of serving others who cut ahead because they think the waiting customer is just loitering. This is not a major production or a rocket launch, guys, you can do this with a tinge of kindness and empathy you all crave so much! read more

Holy hell I am so happy Breads opened in Lincoln Center. I used to frequent the 16th street location a lot when my office was nearby, but after we moved it wasn't as convenient. Everything. Is. Good. Literally never had anything bad from here. The chocolate babka is a sick JOKE because it's one of the most delicious things I've ever had. The people are nice, good service, everything is fresh. Years of Jewish education and all I can remember about Shavuot is that you're supposed to eat Cheesecake. Shhh... Don't tell my Mom: Anyway, hubby and I were in the area during the holiday and decided to use it as an excuse to try the Cheesecake from here. We were told there was a special Israeli-style Ricotta version, made with Shavuot in mind and a year-round classic Cream Cheese version, so we got a slice of each. Hubby couldn't stop raving about the Ricotta Cheesecake, declaring, "It's just like the one my Mom used to make." I was more into the Cream Cheese one, which tasted like the lovechild of heavy, rich NYC style Cheesecake and light, airy Japanese Cheesecake. Loved the in-between texture, and could swear I was able to taste lemon zest. We also got a couple Cheese Sticks, among our favorite go-tos from the original Union Square location. Sort of like a cross between a bread stick and a flaky croissant with lots of buttery, cheesy flavor, these beat even the practically legendary Babka for me. Don't get me wrong, I like that too. But I've been hesitant to risk spending the big bucks on one of these ever since I wound up with one that tasted stale. This outpost seems smaller than the Union Square one, with less seating. But it also seems like it gets less foot traffic. Like others have said, this place is very much on the splurgey side. I think our slices of Cheesecake ran us $8 each, though don't quote me on that. As a lapsed, aka non-practicing, aka bad Jewess who still deeply loves many of the food traditions of her culture, I really appreciate that Breads Bakery churns out various elevated renditions of holiday treats; like special Jelly Doughnuts known as Sufganiyot for Chanukkah, sweet AND savory Hamentaschen for Purim, Honey Cake for Rosh Hashanah... and this Cheesecake. He's impatient, and didn't offer to warm up our croissant though others were being warmed. I walked to the door , then asked to have it warmed. He said he couldn't because I had "already left." Interesting take on the ordinary "egg and cheese" bagel sandwich - with a sesame bun rather than bagel, and a gruyere rather than cheddar cheese. It was good, though I wish the bun were a little less soft and chewy. I also tried a chocolate croissant, which was typical with two strips of chocolate across the pastry and was not especially voluminous. Breads bakery is a very small pastry shop near Lincoln Center. The sell mostly breads and pastries along with coffee, tea and quiches at lunch. When I arrived the place was virtually empty. The sell a whole loaf of the famous chocolate or cinnamon Babka made famous in the TV series Seinfeld. I was told that one of their signature items was "Concord" cake made for two. It sells for about $11.00. Although they said they would slice it in half for me, I still would have to pay for the whole cake. It came in chocolate mousse and vanilla with a fruit filling. They had almond and chocolate croissants but having just had one yesterday I opted for the chocolate rugelach. Two pieces were only $4.00 total and had a small cup of coffee to go with it. They are currently selling and taking orders on items for Passover. The vanilla Concord cake is one of those items. Please note that these items are Kosher styled so be aware of that when making your Passover plans. Again it is grab and go or there is a small seating area. The rugelach was flakey and exceptionally good!!! I could have had more but wanted to eat light for the day ahead. The coffee is fair. I have yet to find good coffee here in NY but it was just okay. I did order some pineapple macaroons to take home with me. I was told they will keep bagged for at least 10 days and not refrigerate nor freeze them. Breads bakery is located underneath some scaffolding across from Lincoln Center. Will definitely have to try this Concord trip should I be in this area again. I like bread. I like bakeries. So with a name like Breads Bakery, can you really go wrong? My friend's really passionate about the chocolate babka here, and the bakery was featured in an Eater article, so I decided to stop by. Here's what I got: - Chocolate Babka ($14.95) Wish they sold individual slices since they only sell whole loaves (a bit pricey). On the flip side, it's a decently sized loaf that will last and makes for a nice dessert to bring to a friend's. The key is definitely WARM IT UP before eating. When it's warm and the chocolate is oozy and goeey and the buttery layers sort of melt together-- ugh, it's hard to beat that. It's very rich; after one slice, I was content. I wouldn't mind a less sweet babka or one with darker chocolate. - Chocolate Rugelache ($2) Small & can be finished in a few bites. Almost like a mini croissant but texture-wise, it was different. Keep in mind I'm no expert since this was my first-ever rugelache. There aren't flaky layers you distinguish in each bite. Instead, it's a bit more dense with a chew to it. The chocolate filling was delicious, but again, I'd prefer it less sweet or with darker chocolate. My friend said he'd like this with a tart fruit jam filling, and I agree. I also got an iced black coffee, which is always my go-to pairing for sweets; it was solid. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try anything else, but if there was a Breads in California (*wink wink*), I'd love to return and try the rest of their pastries/breads -- especially the the cinnamon raisin babka, quiche, and the cheese sticks! read more
