More like 2 1/2. I was walking to Cocoa Bakery when I saw a huge sign for Brewshot pointing in the opposite direction. I couldn't leave without my sweet fix, so I picked up some treats while discreetly telling my boyfriend to cancel his coffee order so we could try the new coffee shop. (Didn't even work, as he tried to order a "brewshot" from the bakery, haha.) Anyway, we walked up the block and into Brewshot. It's tucked away in the back, which explains why this is still considered to be a hidden "gem." The store is pretty large and spacious. There are a couple of tables and chairs, which is great for people who want to get some work done. They also provide free wi-fi for their patrons - score! PRODUCT REVIEW STARTS HERE**** They have a standard menu, but the prices are comparable to Starbucks. You're looking at $3 + for a cup of coffee. My boyfriend decided on an iced tea and I wanted to try their iced coffee. For both beverages, I paid a little over $7 (both smalls) including tip. The iced tea was good. There are several jars with loose tea that you can choose from. They brew each cup to order, so that's a plus. For a hot tea that they pour over a cup topped with ice, you can still taste the flavor. It's not as watered down as you would expect it to be. On the other hand, my iced coffee was a big let down. I know a bakery in Hoboken that happens to sell the best cold brew iced coffee, and this is by no means comparable. The iced coffee was so acidic almost to the point that it was sour. I asked for cream in the coffee, and it didn't help at all. I even added simple syrup, but nothing could mask that taste. Now that I think of it, the barista might have given me coffee concentrate, which would explain why I couldn't force myself to drink it. I took 2 sips, and threw it out. What a waste of $4. As I was walking out, I saw a couple of different things that I should've tried instead - like the espresso served over ice cream. Sounds delicious. I'll be back to write an updated review. Love this place. I've been studying here for the past couple weekends, and I can honestly say that this is one of the best local places in Jersey City. The coffee and tea are both really good. I don't even consider myself knowledgeable about coffee, so I never thought I'd be able to tell the difference, but I know good coffee when I taste it, and this is good coffee. It's rich and creamy and really full bodied. The tea is brewed from loose leaves and is also strong and flavorful. The atmosphere is great. It's bright and sunny and welcoming. It's quiet enough to study, but not so quiet that you feel uncomfortable talking (like you're in a library). There are no screaming babies (a rarity anywhere in Paulus Hook) and none of the Starbucks crowd. The music is also excellent. I only hope they offer some more food choices as that would make it easier for me to hang out all day long ;) read more

This place is great, I'm glad I finally have a coffee shop in my area (I live by the Grove St Path stop). I had a latte and it didn't taste burnt, watery, or generally crappy like Starbucks and all other New York coffee types. It's better than the coffee at Beechwood which is not totally bad but I only really get Beechwood's because it's on the way to my weekday commute in the mornings. Hidden by the beer garden, it's quieter and somewhat less distracting than Warehouse Cafe in the Powerhouse district, but has less of a food menu than Warehouse. Its just pastries and whatnot at Brewshot. Anyhow this is one of my favorite cafe's in the NYC metro area, hopefully their teas are just as good too. read more

I still like it here, but after coming here to do school work (okay - and using updating this review as a way to procrastinate), I have a few notes. First, the free wifi and chill atmosphere brings laptop laborers here. There's plenty of plugs along the window but there's not nearly enough space to hang really spread out your work and get comfy. Speaking of comfy, since the window seats are along a bar, you're sitting up high, and if you're me, your legs and butt start to fall asleep. But...since there are are no plugs near the tables, you have no choice. Bummer. Second, can I have a pot of tea? Like the whole pot, and then you can add water to it? I know that's very cheap grad student of me, but yea, that's what I am. I'd even be willing to pay another 50 cents for it. 'Cause right now, I'm looking at the sad remainder of rapidly cooling tea and I'd love a wee bit more. Finally, better (more?) snacks. This seems to be a lot of employees of the hospital and other local businesses who come here and bring their lunch. Yeah, they've all bought at least a drink, too, but it seems weird (and possibly wrong) to let people bring their personal food in. Some of the meals have been fairly...aromatic, but the food options here and in the neighborhood are slim. I considered getting a snack here, but they all seem to be plastic wrapped and/or overpriced. C'mon Brewshot - you have Blue Bottle Coffee and high quality tea, let's step of the snack game. But still 4 stars because at the end of the day - I just need wifi and caffeine for learning. And they still have plenty of that. read more

I have passed this place many times and thought it would be amazing. Two things turned me the wrong way - service and product. I visited on a slow Saturday afternoon and inquired about the Kyoto Iced Coffee ($4) vs the regular. Apparently the Kyoto is a special way of brewing the coffee and the barista pointed to a cool looking machine by the window. He really did not seem excited to be there that day and I felt like my questions about affogato (frozen yogurt w/ espresso) were really taxing him. I decided on the Kyoto then I used the restroom and sat down at the bar in front of the counter to wait for the "special" coffee. At most establishments, the service person would typically tell you that your order is ready. I sat there for literally 15 minutes thinking that maybe my coffee was being made in a funky contraption, before I saw tea after tea on a digital timer being served to other guests. I decided I would take a look around the counter myself to see if perhaps the coffee was ready. Lo and behold, it was. Thanks for the heads up man! Seriously this place would get more stars (great ambiance, free wifi, and interesting menu items), but I was pissed off about the transaction. I suggest going to try it and stay awhile for the free wifi, but be in the know on how to order and don't ask silly questions like a beginner. read more

Heard about this place a few weeks ago (late) but always forget to try it cause its so tucked away in Paulus Hook. I don't go to Biergarten, which is how people always reference it, so it was pure luck that I stumbled upon it today...and while they were open at that! My thoughts walking in were "this place looks pretty cool." and then "this place feels pretty cold". So yea, nice decor and everything but the vibe definitely left a lot to be desired. It kinda had a Starbucks-y vibe but without the familiarity. There were a couple of loners on laptops and a small family inside. The barista wasn't very engaging and seemed to take a little too long to do everything. From ringing people up, to acknowledging us, to making the drinks, too long. Being that there weren't too many people in at the time, I would have expected more. It's cool that the coffee is organic (but what isn't these days). We got a Macchiato and a Pumpkin Pie Latte (I did NOT order the Pumpkin Pie Latte). The Macchiato was good. It was strong but not overly bitter. I didn't try the Pumpkin Pie Latte (cause why would I?), but was told that it was pretty good. I'm not sure how much of an effort I'll make to come back here. There are so many other go-to coffee spots, I just felt that this 1 was nothing special. I'd go to Dames, Two Aprons, Sam A.M., possibly even Cocoa Bakery (which I will be reviewing shortly), around the corner; all before heading back here. #sorrynotsorry All in all, the coffee was pretty good, the vibe was cold, and the service was nothing special. read more

I have been looking for a good coffee shop in Jersey since I moved here 3 months ago. I was looking forward to trying Blast in Hackensack, but they closed the week after I moved :(. So, I have just been going to Stumptown and Cafe Grumpy in the city. I saw a review of this place, and it saw that they used a v60 to brew coffee; I knew that this would be a place to get coffee. I had been stuck at work the entire week due to Hurricane Sandy, so I decided to take Friday off and visit this cafe. I was there right as they were opening, and they seemed to be a little behind (Easily overlooked considering the storm). I ordered a cup of coffee and a bagel: the coffee was excellent, but the bagel had taken on some of the onion from another bagel they offered. I wasn't too upset about this, and they are pretty new place, so they are still figuring things out. I stayed and read for a little while, and enjoyed my time. The staff was very friendly and engaging. I grabbed a shot of espresso before leaving: it was okay, but too much acidity. read more

It's a real relief to have a clean, spacious, independently owned coffee shop in the neighborhood. Friendly staff, brightly lit, nice and quiet, with books sprinkled about for decoration (and entertainment)--just what I love in a good coffee shop! I really hope that they can advertise more successfully, because the shop's location is less than ideal: it's hidden away by the light rail tracks, situated right next to the Zepplin Hall (the JC biergarten). I only found out about it because I was searching for an alternative to Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks, and I found it here on Yelp! I'd give Brewshot 5 stars, except that I don't drink coffee and have not tried anything more than just their teas so far. However, I'll certainly be back, so I am hopeful that the place will not disappoint! read more

I have nothing but love for Brewshot! As other reviewers already mentioned, this is a great place to get work done or catch up with friends. Great ambiance. There's always space to sit down, pop open a laptop or book, grab some coffee or tea with a savory pastry or sweet danish. I am always happy to spend time in Brewshot. It amazes me this place can manage to keep its doors open. The coffee is incredibly bitter and I normally enjoy a nice strong cup of coffee. If that super bitter taste is something you like then this might be the place for you. Also there is normally only one person running the store and they are never in a rush . Last time I stopped just to get 2 bottles of water and I waited in like for 15 minutes with only 3 people in front of me. I ended up giving up waiting and driving to DD. read more

Nice enough looking, but when I was placing my order at the counter there was a huge bag of garbage next to me. Like, garbage that someone who works at the cafe didn't quite finish taking outside. I imagine the thought process went something like: "Oh okay, this is far enough - I'll put this bag right next to where customers stand when they order. It doesn't matter if it's nasty." I think I've officially decided on Brewshot as my go-to coffee place! The space is open and bright due to a wall of windows. There are plenty of tables and bar stools, and I also spied a good number of outlets for those looking to get some work done. I was really impressed by the selection of pour-over coffee. Rather than offering one coffee for the day, you can choose from a number of beans! They also offer one flavor of French Press, which is what I ordered. It was super smooth and just a little oily due to the French Press treatment. I loved it and didn't want to share. My fiance's macchiato was great as well, but I preferred my non-espresso drink. Brewshot also serves up a nice assortment of pastries. We tried the quiche and the almond croissant. The slice of quiche was really huge and very decadent. I think the cream and cheese to egg ratio was a little skewed, but no matter. It was delicious. My almond croissant was tasty, too! I really wanted to try the iced coffee and even told myself that I was going to order it, but after a frigid walk, I couldn't bring myself to drink anything other than a hot beverage. We stopped for a coffee yesterday, had a great Brazilian pour over and the g/f had a terrific cappuccino. Well priced, clean. As others have noted there wasn't a sense of urgency of the barista, but you do have to wait anyway if you order a pour over, right? I don't get the 'Is it locked or not?' bathroom door deal either . . . we were in a hurry to leave so I didn't get to ask the staff about it, but I'll get answer next time I go. read more

Great place to get work done. I've been a bunch of times and will continue going! The clean, open space and friendly vibe are my favorite things about this place. Love how much natural light comes in, never crowded mid day, and everyone who works there is super chill and very nice. If you're working remotely it's a reliable place to go be productive. (Solid Internet, good number of outlets, clean bathroom.) Drinks/food: Very good soy mocha. Good pumpkin soy latte but not as flavorful- I do like that it wasn't too sweet tho. This is a decent espresso place, with a good layout and sunny atmosphere. I was excited about the place because Jersey City doesn't have a lot of high quality coffee and espresso. This was my first visit, and I chose a latte, which was better than Starbucks for sure, but not as good as Dames. To be frank, while I enjoyed my time there, I'm still calling Dames the place for best espresso drinks in JC. That said, I'll probably return once in a while when I'm in that area of town. read more

I desperately want to like this place as I am a keen coffee drinker and I live across the street - however I have been disappointed with all 6 visits I've made since moving here 8 months ago. Unfortunately I have accepted (albeit grudgingly) that until something changes drastically, i'm better off walking longer to other places around. This place has so much potential, but i'm afraid it may not reach it until the baristas are trained or retrained on coffee basics (e.g what is a latte vs flat white vs cappuccino etc), as well as mastering friendly yet efficient service. If a lovely looking coffee shop is unable to attract or retain its own neighbors, I doubt people would be willing to make a trek for it. read more

It's my favorite place on weekends. My favorite is a pour-over with Ethiopian beans. Has a right amount of acidity in it which I appreciate. It's $4.00 a cup and takes a bit long (it's a pour-over), so I wouldn't order this in the morning on weekdays especially if the line is long, but is a good choice for me on weekends read more

Just discovered this place tucked away behind Cocoa Bakery in Paulus Hook and I am a huge fan. The lattes are slowly and perfectly crafted, meeting that sweet spot between too milky (i.e. Starbucks) and unpleasantly bitter from the espresso (a lot of the local coffee shops). There are a few treats like scones and empanadas, but they keep the menu short and simple and I appreciate that. The main thing to love here is the set-up - very quiet, clean and open with a nice wood finishing. It's the kind of place you come to sit and have your choice of caffeine leisurely and browse some magazines, have a conversation or just hang out. There really are not a lot of those types of cafe's still around. read more

Living in the area, I was extremely excited about Brewshot opening up, but my first experience was very disappointing. I ordered two iced coffees to go. When they told me $8.03 for two iced coffees, my jaw dropped. Even Starbucks is cheaper than that! She said it was because of the special beans they used. (They didn't taste special.) I love coffee, especially strong coffee, but this cup was just not good in my opinion. While in the store, the straws broke as soon as they went into the cup. She gave me replacement straws and even trying to be cautious with the second batch, they broke once we drove away. I bought these coffees for a morning road trip, but without straws, we were SOL. If I'm going to pay $4 for one cup of coffee, it would be nice for it to not fall apart on me. I'll probably give it a second chance later on to see if they're past the growing pains, but definitely will continue to walk down to Legal Grounds for now. I would have given it one star, but the staff was very nice. read more

Beautiful space. Extremely high-quality coffee drinks. Wifi. Locally made baked goods. No, it's not cheap. But this isn't your average coffee shop. It's the same caliber as a Blue Bottle or Joe The Art of Coffee. You're paying for an experience and a terrific beverage. I'd much rather take my business here than Starbucks or Legal Grounds, which has no atmosphere and always smells like bacon, IMHO. They were did have a few kinks to work out the morning I was there' but it's their first week so I'm willing to let it go. They were out of soy milk, and the barista warned me that the biodegradable straws tend to break (he gave me two to be prepared). Go Brewshot for trying to be eco-conscious. Definitely worth the trip as it is tucked into the corner of a building and has free wi-fi so i can work right from there if I wanted to. Love this place. Stopped by on a Sunday morning for an Americano and expected it to be crowded, but the place had a relaxing ambiance and plenty of open seats. Decor in the cafe is simple yet beautiful, the neighborhood outside is quite nice and new as well. Service is straightforward and not fussy, drinks were on point and authentic. And may I add one last note: the seats are actually comfortable. I've been trying a lot of coffee shops in the JC area and I've noticed that many of their chairs (whether it be at the counter or tables) are at awkward heights or just plain uncomfortable, but the seating in Brewshot is perfect. read more
