A special Father's Day brunch, tainted forever in our memories.
Preface: The ONE star rating is based solely on first impressions/treatment from the Elderly (Brunette, short fluffy hair) Manager/Hostess. The food, wait staff, live music and pricing were amazing.
Sadly, this review is based on judgmental, poor treatment by the elderly Manager upon entering the "Bistro". This is Astoria, not Beverly Hills. (Though we were made to feel like Julian Roberts in Pretty Woman, upon coming into contact with this wretched character.)
Backstory:
The day prior (Saturday) I had been in a bad bike accident, and didn't feel up to cooking breakfast the next day. I called Bridgewater Bistro to ask if we needed reservations, about five minutes prior to arriving on Sunday morning. The Gentleman I spoke to was very friendly and assured me that we were OK to walk in at that point without reservations. Due to the accident the day before, I didn't look or feel my best. OBVIOUSLY it showed and this woman predatorily jumped on it. As we walked in the door she looked us up and down with a disgusting expression. (Though at this point, I am sure it is part of her demeanor.) I started to say "Three for bre----" and before I could even get the words out, she shouts "RESERVATION?!?!" I kindly replied that we didn't have one, and explained that I had just called minutes prior to walking in was assured that we were OK to come in without a reservation.
She and the Hostess start laughing AT ME, and arguing with me (in front of other guests, mind you) and look at each other and start talking in front of me, my Husband and my ten year old daughter, and basically imply that I am lying. Never in my nearly forty years on this planet, have I felt so belittled.
I reiterate the fact that I just called, and she proceeds to read me the riot act, telling me how it was Fathers Day and even if it wasn't, she still had no wait staff to serve us, etc. for at least fifteen minutes, as if it were MY problem. She was basically trying to get us to leave. I tell her we are willing to wait, at this point it isn't the issue with us, we were fine. She proceeds to try to bully us out with all kinds of excuses and I say we will wait. I guess I just felt at this point that we had just as much of a right to eat here as anyone else.
While we are waiting, a very well dressed older lady walks in and asks us if we had been waiting long. My husband kindly replies, "Yes, but we didn't have reservations." Neither did she, yet walks up and said Manager explains there will be a short wait because it is Fathers Day but says it shouldn't be long. The difference in treatment is actually sickening. This Woman is immediately taken care of (Not a problem on our end, but a total show of discrimination), and even asked by the bartender if she can start her with a drink.
After exactly fifteen minutes goes by, the Manager who is now literally right in front of us tells the hostess that she can seat "Courtney and her party", rather than finding it in her tiny heart to interact with us. The Hostess (who has now taken her queue from her Manager) seats us, and treats us just as rudely. At this point I am ready to cry. We are brought water by the attendant who remarks "I like your 'tights' Ma'am", And I can't help but wonder if she is being facetious about my leggings or if she is genuinely being nice. Its hard to tell with the way this manager is running this staff. After about ten minutes, an older waitress comes over and introduces herself and says she will be right back. She never comes and someone else shows up and takes our drink order. While we are waiting for our drinks, we hear and watch the Manager directing the Hostess to put away the outdoor seating, and to make the tables inside look full because she doesn't "want these tables looking ready" - at this point we are just in awe. This woman was such a control freak she was willing to turn away ACTUAL MONEY because people didn't make reservations. WOW. Just WOW.
After awhile we are greeted by another Waitress (Annie, I think) who was completely wonderful and informative on things as they were coming out, etc.
Once the food arrived, we were happy that at least THAT part of this experience was good. The food was amazing. Yet, we sat there in disgust because we still couldn't believe how we were treated. I immediately wanted to leave a review but decided to sleep on it to see if maybe I'd feel better today. Unfortunately, I feel even angrier. Its a sad day when you're more than willing to spend over $65 on brunch for three, and be treated like a second class citizen.
I don't take leaving one star reviews lightly. I own an upscale clothing boutique and I would never in a million years expect the success and repeat business that we have if I treated anyone a fraction of what this woman treated us. We came here based solely on recommendations from our customers and clients. Sadly until this Woman is gone, we will be as well. read more
