Broken Yolk is one of your standard, breakfast diners. Nothing too fancy, but still a better class of franchise where you can expect a step above Denny's in cleanliness and presentation. Nothing ever truly impresses, yet you can still reliably enjoy most things you order. Most fare I've had off the menu has either satisfied or been just a step ahead of bland (their breakfast burrito falls into this category) where a dash of salt, a heap of pepper, or the entirety of a salsa ramekin have sufficed in making my breakfast palatable. Over the years I've had their omelettes, multiple benedicts, pancakes, and various specials (their breakfast tacos rank near the top on this one). I've never tried their Iron Man challenge, apologies to Man vs. Food, and I don't think I've ever even had one of their biscuits. It's not a place I really get excited about; still, when pressed by friends and family, I find that I can't say 'no' to the Broken Yolk when its suggested. The most I can say, is that if you stick to stuff you're used to and try not to be too adventurous, you'll probably not be disappointed in what you order. And if you see anything that strays a bit from your comfort zone, its safe to say that nothing new here will sway your heart or mind. It may not be a ringing endorsement, but I have this restaurant in my queue, photos on my phone, and a strong urge to purge my soul of both with this strong three star view of Broken Yolk Cafe. read more

Broken Yolk near La Costa Resort ruined Mother's Day. I arrived 40 minutes ahead of my friend and put my name and phone number on the wait list. I was told the wait was about 15-20 minutes and I would receive a call when I could be seated outside in the patio. I was meeting a lifelong friend that I haven't seen in many months since they live out of the country. We were both on a little bit of a schedule but had plenty of time as I had checked in quite early. My friend arrived on time and we were looking forward to catching up. Since I hadn't received a phone call yet at the 50 minute mark, I went back in to see where I was on the list. I was told there were still people ahead of me but I will be called shortly. Another 30 minutes go by with us patiently waiting. I go back in to check where we are on the list and I'm told I'm no longer on the list. That they had called and got no answer. I checked my phone. No phone call had been made. We were waiting just outside the door the entire time. Nobody even bothered to look outside the door for us. At this point I ask to speak with a manager. I showed her I received no phone call. She remember me checking in earlier and was surprised I wasn't seated yet. She was very apologetic and offered me a gift card and said I would get the next available table. I accepted the gift card. At this point our frame is over and we have to leave. This isn't the first time I've been disappointed at this restaurant. I've tried hard over the years to give them a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc chance. Since I will NEVER be going back, I gave the gift card to a neighbor and her family in need. Life is too short to be treated like this. What is the old saying...."Fool me once, shame on you. Super super disappointed If Your Someone who cannot speak English go elsewhere because apparently they don't serve or treat you the same as if you could speak English! I'm usually one to keep things to myself, but today I must rant... we are currently at the broken yolk in Carlsbad. But I have not felt so discriminated in my life... & to top things off the employees here look just as Mexican as I do... what hurts me most is the fact that it's being done to my parents, who unfortunately are understand English, but cannot speak it. I know many will say, they've been here for years and should know the language, but how many of us travel down south, and don't know the language... We went this past Monday on our way out of town. They were really understaffed and we heard why as the 2 ladies upfront were talking out loud about employees that had texted to call out and blah blah blah. Very unprofessional. Customers should not heard about the drama. Service was good the server was very quiet, soft spoken. I myself ordered scrambled eggs and turkey sausage. The eggs were ice cold as if they cooked them first then cooked the other 3 meals for the table. I didn't send back because I just wanted to eat and leave. We had a long drive ahead of us to get back home. Very different atmosphere then the Burbank location we are used to going to. My son ordered OJ and never received it and we had to ask for it to be removed from the bill. Idk if we would visit this location again. Bottom Line: Good breakfast and service, large portions but a tad overpriced. I've had consistently good food at Broken Yolk Cafe including omelets, pancakes, waffles, crepes, eggs benedict, etc. Also, I've always been happy with the service whether I sat at the bar, on the patio or at a table inside. The potions are large, including huge soda/tea cups and bottomless coffee. I appreciate the consistency but I do feel the food is a tad overpriced. For the best deal, visit between 6am and 8am for their early bird breakfast specials. Beach Plum Cafe remains my go-to breakfast spot in the area but BYC is a good spot to mix it up a bit. read more

I have never experienced service in any restaurant like I did today at the Broken Yolk in La Costa (Carlsbad). Andrea treated me like family. Very professional, polite and on top of everything. I had a water in the first 30 seconds after I sat down and my iced tea a minute later. The food came out quickly and perfectly. The bacon was crispy just how I ordered it. Carlos, who wasn't even my server asked how the food came out. I could tell he really cared because he told me he was glad that my eggs came out fluffy and smiled. I will definitely be back again soon with the rest of my family next time. This is my new favorite breakfast / lunch spot. My family and I visited San Carlsbad and decided to eat here on our way back home. The staff was super friendly and very accommodating! I asked the hostess if it was possible to get a booth by the windows because we wanted to keep an eye on my brothers bike which was On his bike rack. She sat us at the perfect table with in a perfect view of the bike. We really appreciate her doing that for us. The food was great! Portions were huge! I had the breakfast burrito with rice and beans on the side. I shared my sides and only ate half of my burrito. My mom had the French toast trio. She said it was the best French toast she's ever had! My brother had an omelette and potatoes. He ate every last bite and was really happy with his order. The prices are really affordable. I was surprised on how inexpensive the mimosas flight was. This was my first time coming to this location in the Carlsbad/Encinitas. Very friendly staff, everything look clean and neat. We got seated very quickly and we went during lunch time.
