The Place is nice, service is good, but they still do not know how to make an omelet, especially for $18.00. Omelets are supposed to be created in a small 7-10 inch omelet pan. The reason is your suppose to cook the eggs so they are thick and fluffy along with your ingredients. Then you add cheese which holds everything together. You then fold it in half and the heat of the omelet melts the cheese in seconds. When you flip it onto your plate it not only looks perfect but when you cut it with your fork and take a bite you get ALL the ingredients at one time. This place cooks your omelet on a grill and spreads the eggs thin like a tortilla. After the eggs have been cooked they then add the ingredients which never binds with the egg. Then they roll it up like a burrito and place it on your plate. The end result when eating this omelet is when you take a bite, all the ingredients roll off of your forlk and all over your plate. let me start by saying that when the food finally came out, everything tasted great. for the Hispanic male server with the mustache, don't argue with the customer especially when it's over how many coffees we ordered. there are better things to waste your breath on. we ordered 3 coffees but he insisted we only ordered 2. when my wife politely corrected him, he became defensive and agitated and insisted that he was correct. "well, you only ordered 2 but I'll bring you another one." really?? oh, thank you for being so gracious. I realize that you'll have to climb the mountains to pick the coffee beans, grind them and brew us another pot to fill that extra cup of coffee so, much appreciated. also, when we first arrived on this random Monday morning, we asked that we be seated outside for our party of 8. the outdoor dining area was clearly empty. the hostess said "no problem, just give us a minute to set up the tables." minutes go by and the same above mentioned gentleman came out and said "NO, we cannot do that." LOL you can't be bothered to put two tables close to each other? get this grouch out of here. the food, albeit good, took forever. it also took almost our entire meal to get someone to refill my coffee. maybe we'll try another location next time. read more

First time here, and we were very impressed! Inviting atmosphere, clean location, and great service. 25 minute wait on a Sunday morning, but it was definitely worth the wait. BYC is a timeless and reliable breakfast location that never ceases to make me happy. Well, except for the ridiculously long lines at the PB location, so fortunately I was close enough to the Encinitas location to take my boyfriend there instead. The waitresses are so cheery, which brightened my mood on a surprisingly rainy morning in San Diego. Service was excellent from beginning to end. I ordered a Jack of Hearts omelette, which contains bacon, artichoke hearts, jack cheese, and sour cream. SOOO GOOD. Not sure why I didn't just split a dish with my boyfriend because I can never finish a BYC omelette on my own. Needless to say, I love how family friendly this breakfast spot is, and how consistently awesome all the BYC locations are. The omelettes are a San Diego staple, so check it out if you haven't already! I have yet to dine with someone who wants to attempt the Iron Man or Woman Challenge. Intimidating!! read more

I came here on a Wednesday morning at 7:15 am. I got the breakfast special (available 6-8 am): 2 eggs, 2 pancakes and 2 pieces of bacon for $5.99, not a bad deal especially because the prices for something similar almost double after 8 am. I added a side of home fries. Everything came out warm to cold, big disappointment. I asked for my eggs over medium, they came out over easy, the bacon was cold and very salty and the pancakes were just warm and a weird texture (pully/chewy). The home fries were cold and really bland. I have been to Broken Yolk a few times and I remember the food being much better. I wouldn't come back here again. I am giving this place 2 stars because the service was excellent, it's a shame the food was not better. read more

So I'm sitting here right now on my friends iPhone and this is fricking insane. We got seated about 15 minutes again and I haven't even our server yet. I have seen the busboy more with my friends coffee and my water. This is super insane, and the host guy is so very unprofessional. I can't believe that this place has so many "good" reviews. This place is one of the most unprofessional places I have ever seen, First off, mister host man with his microphone pointed to where my friend and I were sitting. He didn't even walk us to our table and show us where we were sitting. Our server was MIA for about 33 minutes and 24 seconds. Once the busboy man came by with my friends coffee, he went to grab some creamer and out of the 4 creamers in the bowl, 3 were already used. After about waiting an additional 19-20 minutes, our server arrived and then I ordered my orange juice (large) which came in this super fancy glass. The orange juice was delicious and didn't need to be sweetened in anyway!! About 25 minutes later, my friend and I finally saw our server again and refilled my friends coffee which she just poured into the cup from a high distance above the table causing it to splash over the table. About 3 minutes later, our food came out. I ordered the special of the day and it was a 2-2-2 deal. 2 french toast, 2 sausage, and 2 eggs. First off, the fact that the sausages was the only hot item on the plate didn't surprise me. The french toast was warm and didn't really impress me. I make some better french toast at home. My friend ordered the Border Check omelet. When he asked if I wanted to take a bite of it, I said sure, and tried it. When I placed it into my mouth, I felt like I had just drank a tablespoon of water from the ocean. WOW!!! Talk about salt galore!! I'm not sure what happened here, but it was just an overdose of salt. make the effort and just drive over to Potato Shack and get some manholes........pancakes. Have been to this La Costa Broken Yolk several times and the food/service really do remain consistent. The menu is pretty much the same as all of the other locations and the portions are substantial in size to say the least. This particular location is always busy, especially on weekends and has a great outdoor seating areas for those looking to take in some sun. Overall, Broken Yolk isn't really my go to breakfast joint but this location does yield some pretty good food. How many different ways can you order up a mom? SO MANY different ways! This morning at breakfast, we did it like this: The Mom Omelette - whites only, with everything on it (avocado, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms), with the salsa and sour cream it comes with, and refried beans instead of potatoes The Mom Omelette - no bell peppers, with hollandaise on the side, fruit and no potatoes (me) The Mom Omelette - no salt, no bell peppers, no salsa or sour cream, with hollandaise on the side and a biscuit They all came out fast and looking AWESOME. But when we dug in, it wasn't so great. The omelette's structure was like an egg pancake, wrapped around all this filling. So the fillings weren't COOKED in, they were just wrapped up. So it was a little weird. The fillings were generous and fresh, but something about the oil they were cooked in tasted and felt off. My biscuit was a cross between a biscuit and a dinner roll - so it was more chewy than fluffy or biscuit-y. Butter pats and jam on the table made this pretty yummy! The restaurant itself feels like an old-style deli, with booths and an outdoor patio. Though my omelette came out looking great, it for some reason didn't make me feel good afterwards. From the looks of it, you'd think that it was a very clean meal - protein-wise, and freshness of component-wise. So I think maybe the oil that they used had something to do with my yucky feeling. I'm also not a fan of the way they make the omelette, like a pancake that is wrapped around separately cooked filling, and then assembled. It made the egg part denser and more overcooked than an omelette usually is. Service was polite and diner-feeling. Neither overly warm nor standoffish. Decaf was just okay. I think I'll stick to News Cafe when I'm in the area and want a good breakfast! read more

These guys are beginning to pop up everywhere! They have 8 locations in San Diego now and are building more. Just a year ago I remember having to drive all the way the PB, now I have options! This particular Broken Yolk is pleasant! The inside seating is very nice with a cool modern look to it. I didn't like the outdoor patio, it seemed a little dirty to me and when I sat there in the morning, I didn't get a lot of sunshine. The food is very consistent with the other Yolk locations. This restaurant is not a 5-Star breakfast joint, it's a place that serves a good solid meal. It's a step above iHop and Denny's, but there's nothing too creative in their menu. I enjoy their breakfast croissant sandwich and their omelets. I'm most impressed with their service. Whenever I go there they always deliver my food within 8 mins of ordering. They also are quick to refill your coffee. 5 Stars for service! read more

Yes, this place is SUPER popular, but that's not because The Broken Yolk is the beezknees. It's probably because there are no other breakfast places within a 3 mile radius. It's the only breakfast place that services La Costa, therefore, it's popular. Not to say they don't do some things right. The service is fast, and the egg dishes are pretty good. I'm also a fan of that fruit and yogurt parfait that comes loaded with fresh tasty berries. And sitting on the outdoor patio with a cup of coffee is a great way to start your Saturday, in my opinion. But beyond that, it's really a very average breakfast place. Nothing stands out except the price, which is always higher than you think breakfast should be. The pancakes are spongy, the hash browns are meh. And NO COUPONS on weekends. I'm never disappointed when I go there, because by now I know what to expect, but I'd be pumped to see a better alternative set up shop somewhere nearby. read more

This place is one of the best breakfasts we have ever eaten. We had a variety of different dishes with our family; oatmeal, pancakes, acai bowl, eggs, all of it was delicious since as daddy pig tried some of everyones. We are in town one more night and plan to come back again tomorrow morning before our trip home, so that should tell you something. I feel very mixed about Broken Yolk. Been coming here for years. Pros: Food is consistently fresh. Service is FAST. Large portions. Cons: Is a step above Denny's- good omelets, but not spectacular. Is somewhat pricey for what you get. Hubby and I ordered omelets and one kids meal for our twins. Ordered 2 coffees- Bill was over $36 plus tip. (I figured out that you're better off getting coffee from Starbucks next door- costs $1.50 for a 12 oz grande, vs paying $2.50 +tax + tip for mediocre 6 oz cups...) I think I wouldn't mind paying $15+ for breakfast if I had a wider choice of fresh made baked goods, herbal teas, variety of coffee, wider selection of side dishes. Note- the coupons you find in the Reader and the local mailers are not honored on weekends! read more
