This place is down the street from my house so it kind of become my breakfast go-to place, especially if I have time to go during the week. Their cooks are not entirely consistant but the wait staff is generally nice and attentive. The first thing that I tried here was the breakfast quessadilla. It was pretty good but chorizo for me gets overwhelming and I ended up taking half of it home and giving it to one of the boys that I live with. Next I tried the Over the Border Benedict. The first time that I had this it was fantastic. The carne asada was tender and not fatty and the sweet corn cakes were pillows crispy but soft love, the eggs were perfectly poached, and the poblano sauce was delicious. However, the second time I got it the meat was over cooked and fatty and the eggs seemed a little more runny than they should have been which is where my "consistant" qualm began. Since I moved onto getting the soup, salad, and sandwich combo for breakfast or lunch. I always get the berry salad and the chicken veggie soup which both are the best things, in my opinion, that they offer there. I've switched up the sandwiches up; the turkey is mediocre, the veggie sandwich is good, but my go to has been the BLT which has been consistantly good. My biggest issue with the place is that it seems to be a bit more pricey for the same things that you can get elsewhere but its close and their soup is delicious. read more

This was my first visit- my inlaws live nearby and have eaten here before. I was excited to try a new place and the menu photos looked delicious. It was hard to pick just one entree. I chose an omelette- with spinach, bacon, cheddar cheese, and avocado. The server was very courteous and friendly. My omelette arrived and was big and stuffed with crispy bacon, and spinach- but after 2 bites I realized there was no cheddar. I had to wait several minutes for our server to return- she was very apologetic- I said please just have them toss some cheddar in... a few min later she brought me out a new omelette. Unfortunately, the new bacon wasn't crispy and the cheese wasn't cheddar! They put in American cheese, which I don't care for. So disappointing. My mother in law was missing sausage in her omelette, but didn't want to say anything. Next time we will just go to Mimi's. read more

I've eaten here a few times for breakfast now and each time the food has exceeded my expectations, especially the omelets. I think what sticks out to me is the staff. They are seen to focus on guest service and making sure the customer is attended to, even if it isn't there serving station. They all seem to be checking in on me so to speak. They also seem to focus on cleanliness. One time a manager was politely correcting a busboy for not getting enough of the crumbs off the floor from under a table. One knock on this place is that it gets very busy on weekends so you may have lengthy wait, yet they still seem to get the food out in a timely manner. Went there for lunch with friends that come here often. I should have known better than to order anything other than pancakes or a sandwich at a coffee shop like this. The chorizo and egg tacos looked good and they were. Unfortunately the rice and beans that came with it were not. Something crunchy in the rice and the beans were not warm. Also, the coffee was weak. The service was fine. I think their prices are a little high. This seems to be very popular with locals. You just have to know what to order, I guess. read more

We have been looking for a knew place for breakfast. We use to go to Katella grail but after the the best waitress ( Chandra ) in town left. We followed her to The Broken Yolk, a new place in town. We have been back 5 or 6 times. Have never had a bad dish and the service is always grate. Never had to wait for the food and they were right there with more coffee or tea. Ok so I heard all sorts of hype for this place, and I'm not saying I was disappointed, but it didn't really stand up to the hype either. When I got there and they told me 20 min wait I was fine, but when they actually sat me about an hour later I was pretty grumpy. Portions are huge, fair for the price but almost excessive. I did like the option for the food challenge- dozen egg omelette plus a massive amount of hash browns on a one hour time limit. You even get a t-shirt and a photo on the wall of fame if you do it. That was pretty cool. Service was nice at first, then we got ignored once we got the meal, nice tv's to watch Sunday football, but overall I was not impressed with the place. read more

This place is a really nice breakfast spot for locals and their friends that come into town. We were sat and greeted right away, and placed our order within five minutes of sitting down (which was hard to do because everything sounded so good!). I ended up ordering the golden state benedict, and the other two in my party ordered the rancher and fuego omelettes. What a wonderful Saturday morning to try something new...hmmm, how about the Broken Yolk. I took my mother here with my brother who had actually visited this location before. I am new to the Broken Yolk so for me I was ready for a fresh experience. First off they have a vast menu. Lots to choose from and I was very pleased to see a large selection of Mexican inspired breakfast dishes like chorizo, California avocado burrito, and many items with ground beef covered in salsa and sauce. Since this was new place to me I went with a classic, the "No Name" omelet which contained bacon, tomato, mushrooms, avocados, and oddly no cheese. The avocado's silky and robust flavor replaces the cheese and holds the ingredients together. From the first bite I noticed that even though in a hot omelet the bacon was still perfectly crispy while the other ingredients were tender and flavorful. I had no gripes about not having cheese in an omelet. All the individual ingredients stood out, plus the size was good and very filling. It came with home fries which to them is sliced potatoes. They were cooked well but not much for flavor. Little salt made them tasty though. Honestly though my favorite part of the whole breakfast was the bread portion of my meal. I opted out of toast for the blueberry muffin. The muffin was small and looked overcooked so I saved it for last. I cut it in half, buttered each side and went to town on it. Despite the exterior look the middle was soft and fluffy and the chunks, yes chunks, of blueberry were exploding with flavor. I wished it was a bit bigger or there were two, maybe three on my plate, but the one I had I enjoyed very much. The building almost looks out of place; everything else around it has that concrete color for the buildings and the black asphalt for the parking lot. Then out of nowhere is a wood paneled red roof tiled restaurant with the very unique Broken Yolk logo. The decor continues into the establishment where there are dark brown wood tables with lighter accented walls and fixtures. The whole thing feels like a designer created rustic diner. I enjoy those colors especially during the morning, nothing too extreme, more calming which is perfect. The only issue I had with the furniture was the tables. The four person table was almost too small with three people. With four there would have been room for only a plate each and maybe your drink, which speaking of the coffee cups were too small ass well but when I dipped below fifty percent full there was someone there ready to top me off. All around the decor was enjoyable and an inviting, cannot go wrong. Now I come to the last point in my reviews, service. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed with smiling faces and an eager to please attitude. Even though they seemed to have a full house we let them know that we had a party of three and immediately the receptionist countered with "inside or outside?" Since it was quite loud inside and a nice day outside we went for the patio. We were quickly seated and shortly after our waitress introduced herself. I always like to ask the server what is good there. I get to see if they are honest or their answer is robotic. Our waitress was very honest. She told us what was not the greatest and what they were good at. She pulled the empty chair out a little and put a knee up on it to give us her suggestions. I think most people do not like that and think of it as some sort of intrusion on their personal space. I however think it is a more personal touch, gives you a feeling that they want to be part of your dining experience and letting you know that they are genuine. I might be going overboard a little but never the less that positive feeling is there. Overall the Broken Yolk may be on the pricier side but it is the perfect alternative treat restaurant. You have your regular breakfast hangout that is cheap and they know who you are, this is the place when you want to spend a little more that weekend and try something that you know will be good. Love the decor and would not change a thing. Sitting there drinking your morning coffee may be the most enjoyable part of your week. Bring different people, try different things and just have a good time. That is what finding safe eateries like the Broken Yolk are all about. read more

Eggs were cooked to order and potatoes were fine but sausage silver dollar size, thin, tasteless and overdone. Biscuit was a brick, like it was microwaved to heat it. Also has chorizo quesadilla. So many beans only a hint of chorizo and then the flavor was not good. Its rare when I taste something and don't touch the rest of the plate. Checked this place out with some friends for brunch. There was a short wait time. Since it was hot outside they offered cold water at the hostess stand. That was awesome - it's the little things. Restaurant atmosphere is upbeat, clean, modern and kinda felt like Palm Springs ambience. Food and service is good - I tried an omelette with salsa and pinto beans on the side. Yeah beans! Heard so much great reviews, so needless to say I had much expectations for this place. I ordered the chicken waffle, while it was pretty good I felt it needed just another strip of chicken to at least suffice the entire waffle. Our server didn't do much but take our orders down, charged me $2.59 for coffee that was half full and never came back to check if I needed a refill. My wife Maria and I found the Border Benedict to be an excellent choice for breakfast, which was recommended by our server, Christina, who was delightful and made our first experience excellent. The food and service was so amazing that we asked to speak with an owner or manager. Mike, one of the business owners, came to our table and spoke with us for awhile and really made us feel welcome. We rarely post to yelp, but I definitely felt this one was warranted. We've always enjoyed Broken Yolk from our days in San Diego and were really excited that this location opened near our house. The owner is always really nice and often made visits to our table to say hi to our kids and see how the meal was going. Today we thought about going to breakfast but with a toddler and an infant, decided that takeout would be easier. I ordered the Machaca and my wife ordered the "No Name" omelet. The avocado used in the omelet was bad and had brown and black spots all over each piece. Called in and spoke with the Manager McKenna Ortega and offered to send her a picture of this avocado. She declined and said that the avocados turn brown in an omelet. I've cut open avocados before and have seen these same brown spots and it's definitely just a bad avocado. The icing on the cake - when I asked to just be given a credit for an omelet on our next visit... She offered to give me credit for just the avocado!! I kindly declined and sarcastically thanked her for her time. What happened to customer service?? What happened to trying to do what's right for customers to enjoy their meal? We have been waiting for them to open for we always like a good breakfast. My sister ordered the eggs Benedict and her eggs were hard and the sauce wasn't very good. As for me, I ordered the Southern biscuits and gravy with an egg over easy on the hash browns. The biscuits were hard and I only are the tops even though I didn't care for the gravy. The egg was hard like my sister's and we brought to their attention and they said the chefs been having a problem getting the eggs right. I didn't finish and neither did my sister. We had to ask the busboy to get us water for our waiter rarely checked on us and it wasn't busy for we were there around 2. Been there done that and won't be going back. read more

Have come here a few times and always have good experiences. Told the wait was about 10-15 minutes and, sure enough, that was about right. Customer service here is always good. Wait staff always comes by to fill my coffee. Family is happy so can't really complain. Does get a little noisy because of the crowds, but I don't really mind. read more

Used to go to the original down in San Diego. Usually we don't eat a lot of breakfast but figured we'd go out today and do so. Surprisingly they weren't too busy at 10am on a Sunday morning. Of course shortly after we arrived it got pretty busy. Receptionist was nice and very accommodating with us and our baby. Our waitress was nice and friendly, there were booths, tables and outdoor tables to choose from and the people(customers) were all very friendly - I think that comes from the local Orange community. Having thought long and hard about this review, I think it is time to offer it. I have eaten breakfast at the Broken Yolk in Orange on a dozen occasions in the recent months. Usually I simply order oatmeal which is a sturdy breakfast and one can hardly go wrong with it. However, for the 8 or so times I have ordered this menu item, it has come out cold or lukewarm at best. I kept on trying to see if it might improve, but such was not the case. This past time, last week, I had the waitperson take the item back and have it nuked. She was most apologetic, but it was certainly not her fault. There is a problem in the kitchen. While being appreciative of the staff, the quality of the food overall is in question. People started out way too harsh on the broken yolk considering it's new. Since they've gotten their stuff together, they're great! I have a 91 year old grandma in a wheelchair and they made it very easy to seat us and were extremely kind in doing so. I ordered the bidder Benedict with my eggs over medium instead, which comes with corn cakes, carne asada, and green sauce on top and potatoes on the side. SOOOO delicious! read more
