The Broken Yolk is a joke. The hostess put me on a list for 2 and said the wait would be 20 minutes. Waited 30 mins without my name being called while other couples that were put on the list after me. We ate here around 11:00 on 9/5. It was busy, but we were seated as soon as was possible. Every table was full, and service was good for as busy as they were. Food came about 25-30 min after ordering. Our server kept our drinks full. The food was good. We had average brunch faire. Waffles and fried chicken, scrambles and pancakes. Sometimes I think people have the patients of a nat when it comes to a new restaurant. They are working out the kinks and the employees are learning to work as a team. I had hoped for more even after reading the reviews here. I had the breakfast quesadilla which was a little dry tasting, however the flavor combo was a good idea, just didn't wow me. Hubby had the French toast which was average. The bacon left a lot to be desired. There are a lot of omelettes and egg dishes to choose from, and perhaps that is where their specialty lies. I had heard so many great things about this place and was super excited to try it. We were seated quickly and our order placed quickly as well. Really enjoyed our breakfast. My friend ordered bacon extra well done and hash browns extra well done. She extends kudos for having her food prepared correctly, commenting that no one else has every really gotten this part right before. Her french toast arrived with a freshly prepared strawberry compote that was awesome. I ordered chicken fried steak with basted eggs, both prepared to perfection. We walked in and the waitress that did not help us just stared like she was lost, we asked for a table and she said with an attitude "do you want to just sit wherever you want" and then walked away! Visiting here and drove by several times and decided to try it out for breakfast on our last day. No wait, which was nice, and the server took our order fairly quickly. The hubby ordered chicken and waffles and I ordered the no name omelette. My son ordered Betty's biscuits and gravy. He said the biscuits and gravy was good. My omelette left a lot to be desired. The food here is fantastic, but unfortunately the service cannot match it. Last few times I went there we had horrible service. The straw that broke the camels back was having a server who seemed to care more about getting us out of there as fast as possible. She never refilled our drinks, never asked us how everything was, forgot my side of toast, dropped the check off as she brought us our food, and while we were still eating started bringing us boxes for our leftovers. I'm sorry we were an inconvenience on her day but at least gives 30 minutes to sit down, order, and then eat. read more

Broken Yolk opened their doors this morning and hands down the best breakfast place on the planet!!! Being from the East coast, we take a lot of pride in our diners and the Broken Yolk is comparable to the best of the best in New York. The quality of food is similar to moms home cooking and the service was just as good. "Best breakfast in San Diego" I guess they didn't get the memo about the Bar of Expectations being as high as it is here in Orange County. Another chain opening in the OC without doing there homework. Denny's Express just down the street served the same mediocre food and lasted just over a year. Went here with my daughter on 9/6/13 at around 8am. Finally some competition to the The Original (overpriced) Pancake house a couple blocks away. We arrived to find the restaurant was only about 10% full. The decor, a throw back to the sixties with its bright yellow yolk walls to its yolk overhead table lights. Reminded me when the place originally opened as a Sambos in the 60's. We were greeted at door and told we would have to wait for our table to be bussed. What? The place was 80% empty and you wanted to seat us at dirty table, when there obviously dozens of clean ones. The menu was uneventful. I could have been at Denny's or Norms seen the same pictures of entrees; just different names. I ordered coffee which was promptly served. Cream - individual packets on the table. Note to BYC, your coffee sucks. Serve fresh cream. The very first thing most customers get when the sit down to have breakfast is coffee. Besides the wait staff it's the very first impression we get. If the coffee tastes like swill then what can we expect from the rest of the meal? My daughter went with her favorite stand by, pancakes. She's an excellent judge of Pancakes if one can be called that. I decided to go with the one breakfast item I judge most restaurants by, Chicken Fried Steak. This is truly the meal that separates them all. I went with fresh fruit, scrambled eggs and the biscuit. The food arrived about fifteen minutes later. The plates were more or less thrown on the table. No acknowledgement as to whether there was anything else we wanted. Both my daughter and I were a little surprised that the pancake syrup was sitting on the table, all sticky with dripping syrup all over it. You would think that a chain claiming to be the best breakfast in San Diego could at least bring heated syrup in a clean carafe to the table. You would have thought maybe they would have walked down Chapman and had at least one breakfast at The Original Pancake House to size up the competition. Hey Even Jack in the Box and McDonald's gives you warm syrup packages. According to my daughter the cakes were nothing special. Straight from a ready mix bag-just-add-water run of the mill cakes. A blind taste test between Norms, Denny's and Golden Yolk would yield a tie. Chicken Fried Steak. Visually one of the most unappealing plates of food I had ever seen. First the gravy looked like someone they threw up on the chicken fried steak. Barely enough gravy to make a dent in covering it. No gravy on the biscuit. Really? Who serves Chicken fried steak with biscuits and does not put gravy on the biscuit? The gravy you could tell came right out of a can, and they may or may not have added some other ingredients to give it texture. Eggs O.K., fruit fresh. The steak knife they provide was definitely the underdog in this match of meat vs. metal. As others have mentioned the breading came right off the meat, well if you call it meat. (Over cooked) After careful inspection you could see that it was a machine processed patty. Evenly placed perforation holes where the dead giveaway. Based on the texture, the fact that the breading separated, the machined quality of the less then 14" mystery patty this was obviously a frozen product they deep fry per order. The biscuit; The bottom 1/2 inch of the biscuit was so hard it was impossible to even cut through. I handed the thing to my daughter, (a teenager) and asked her to tear the biscuit in half. After a minute of struggling she was able to tear it into two pieces. Not once did any wait staff come up to the table and ask us how things were. The meal with tip was just shy of $25.00. In conclusion our high expectations based on all the hype was a monumental let down. I was looking forward to some old fashioned down home breakfast food that could mimic or at least come close to the now Closed Omelet Parlor Costa Mesa, or Beslies Garden Grove. What a huge disappointment this place is. If this is San Diego's best may the food god's have mercy on us. read more

We had breakfast there several weeks ago. I ordered an omelet, it arrived without any cheese. I sent it back and they put cheese in it. Then I looked for the ham and couldn't find any until I peeled back the omelet. The ham had all been dumped in one corner. The hashbrowns were like mashed potatoes - very soft and not crispy on the outside. I took the time to write a letter to the manager and never heard from anyone. Their cooks need help. They need a lesson in customer service. I would rather go to Denny's. read more

While the food was decent, the service made it difficult to stomach. No help for our server from other wait staff or manager. What happened to team work? $41 total (an orange juice, an espresso, and two omelettes) for two person for just brunch is a little expensive if you ask me. However, I wouldn't mind the price if the quality and service was worth it. Unfortunately this was not the case for broken yolk. The food was "alright." It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. The food literally came out two minutes after ordering. My hash browns were cold and hard. My omelette was kind of warm but not even close to being hot. It certainly did not feel fresh. As for the service, the waitress seems nice but I didn't like how she dropped off the check right way. As in my third bite in with a plate full of food still and already there was a check on my table. What's the rush? Well honestly, it would have just been her lost because she's losing out on additional sales. What if I wanted to add some desserts? Well, it's pretty discouraging for me to order anything else if the check is already on my table. Overall, I think it was an expensive breakfast for barely decent food. Great service, food was good. Had heard great reviews and decided to check it out on Saturday. We arrived a little after 9 am and only waited about 10 minutes. We were seated at our table when one of the assistants brought over two large glasses of water which we appreciated. A few minutes later our server Rose M. greeted us with a nice, genuine smile and took our drink order. She delivered our drinks and took our food order, she gave me a great recommendation for the Tiki Toast. Hubby ordered the Country Benedict. His benedict paled in comparison to Kimmie's Coffee Cup. The sausage was commercial grade, smaller and fatter patty than the english muffin it sat on. The "country gravy" tasted like a mix between gravy and hollandaise with a sour taste and even had a yellow tint to it. He was very disappointed, but ate it anyway. My Tiki Toast was delicious. The caramel drizzle, stawberries and blueberries were the perfect complement to the thick hawaiian bread pieces. Throughout the breakfast and assistant refilled our coffee and iced tea continually, our drinks were never empty. We never had to ask for refills. Great service. We will definitely go back and try something else. It would be wonderful if The Broken Yolk Cafe opened a location in Huntington Beach. There is an empty former Sizzler at Goldenwest and Edinger or an empty former Denny's at Edinger between Gothard and Beach across the street from Bella Terra. Either of these empty buildings would be the perfect location for a Broken Yolk Cafe. read more

I'm giving this place a lot of slack because they just opened and may working out some kinks and because, maybe it's me! I seem to have been way more disappointed than my male meal mates! First time with my son on lunch hour. Restaurant was mostly empty with wait staff standing around trying to look busy. Food took over one half hour after ordering and my side of sausage was "jerky" like, really inedible. My sons breakfast was just okay, no frills no attempt to make it look appetizing. Second time with husband late lunchtime restaurant was moderately busy but still had lots of wait staff available, took a long time to get an order placed and then meal took longer than expected to be delivered. My turkey and avocado sandwich came with a the avocado half just smashed on top, not sliced as pictured, looked like my son had made it. Poor rushed service. You know what I mean, the "Everything ok? Ok" and off they go without waiting for the answer, never to be seen again. Like they're being paid by the # of tables they touch. Food just barely average and service needs improvement. read more

The bathroom had not Been cleaned in the men's restroom. The sink counter was overfilled with water and my husband had to soak the water up with paper towels for them! For a while...on top of that, our food didn't come complete..some plates were missing toast, others fruit...wtf? Our waitress did try to make service a little bit better by being nice with no attitude like some others would give, but we still had to ask other waitresses for things!! If I could give them a '0' I would. Been looking forward to going here as we are big fans of the Broken Yolk in Carlsbad, good service and food. We waited at least 10 mins to get drinks and then another 10 mins to place our order. After another 20 minutes (at least) out comes the food. My son's blueberry pancakes were raw in the middle when we looked under them, my toast was burned and my breakfast lukewarm. My son went to look for the manager because we were just going to leave money for the drinks and go elsewhere. He comes over promises to have our food back and 'right' in 5 mins. Ok...5 minutes later, here it comes. My son picks up a pancake, RAW in the middle. At this point, we had been there going on 40 minutes and he said "That's all right mom. I'll eat around the raw parts". My hash browns had been thrown back on the griddle and obviously salted again--they were inedible. We get the bill--he didn't even have the courtesy to comp any of the bill even though the food and service were pretty awful and substandard. $27.00 later for mostly inedible food, we won't go back to this one. We'll make the drive to Carlsbad where both the food and service are superior. If you're in the Orange area, take your money to FLAPPY JACK'S--definitely a much better eating establishment!! read more

Went to the restaurant for brunch on Sunday, 10/26/14. The hostesses were really fun and obviously loved their jobs. Kudos to the person who hired them. It was VERY busy and the servers were slammed, but still had the time to smile! My wife ordered the Club Sandwich and said it was very good. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Salad. The salad looked great, but the lettuce wasn't even close to being cold and the Honey Mustard dressing was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! I was expecting something more like the Honey Mustard dressing served at other restaurants, like Red Robin or Carrows, but this dressing was terrible. It was thin (a bit too watered down) and whoever made it got way too carried away with the vinegar. I discovered that too late, as I had already poured the dressing onto my salad. If the lettuce had been cold (as it should ALWAYS be) the salad itself would have been great with another dressing. I suggest the restaurant rethink their Honey Mustard dressing recipe. read more
