Need to grab dinner before heading to Kaiser because their Stockdale location was renovating their pharmacy. Stopped by to check it out. The guys said the burgers were handmade. Ok. Then he said let's do the special and then add bacon. Its cheaper that ways. OK. I like recommendations. The burger was good . Loved the patty. Hated that the bacon was flat and broken and it didnt make me happy. Fries were nice and crisp and I was able to get ranch to dip. I finally looked at the recipt because my husband paid. This was not a deal. $20/ burger. All over the place it says special for this....special for that. Where is my special pricing deal? Betrayed and felt lied to. I ordered the Brookside Club and it was delicious! I didn't get fries with it because I wasn't eating right away. They close pretty early in the afternoon, and this was the best time to try them for a late lunch/early dinner. The people working the counter were super nice and provided excellent service and the gentleman who made my food was great too. Even though I didn't eat my sandwich right away, it was excellent! This is my second time getting food from the deli here at Brookside. First visit was for breakfast, and I got a turkey and broccoli omelette. It was delicious, and so big I had the second half for lunch at work . Today, after getting some shots at Rite Aid across the street, (thank you Valerie!) the hubs and I stopped by to try their burgers. Worth the stop! I appreciate that they ask you about each topping when you order, and the food came out quick, and correct. The fries that were included were super crispy, fat, crinkle fries, with seasoned salt, which is always my preference. The burger tasted fresh and was made to order, and I could tell. I wish the meat had had a tad more salt, but that's just my personal taste. We bought our drinks in the Market area, presented our ticket and paid at that counter. It was a good lunch. read more

The store is amazing! It has everything you can think of and more. Plus Smiths...that's a huge plus! **The 2 star rating is for the deli. My friend brought me there to get lunch. I haven't had anything from the deli before, but was happy to try something new. Checked out the salads in the refrigerated case while we waited in line. All were at least day old. They all had that hard, dull layer on the top that made them look old. Ick! Definitely not fresh. I wonder how often they replace the salads. Not sure if the guy taking our orders was new, but he struggled getting everything into the computer. I ordered a hot pastrami sandwich combo and asked what came on the sandwich. He said lettuce, tomato, cheese...omg! No! I asked for mustard and pickles only. That took a few minutes to get into the computer. My friend ordered the French dip lunch special. She wanted meat and bread only. He asked what kind of meat and then went in the back to ask if they had beef. Oh my! It took about 20 minutes to get our food. Seemed the guy taking orders and a woman in the back were the only two working. There was a herd of people, staff and others, at the ice cream counter. Some new something was happening over there. No one came to help in the deli, which I thought was sad. When we got our food, we both checked to make sure the orders were correct. No pickles on mine. My friend's was correct. You could tell the rolls had been frozen. They had that dry wrinkly look on top. I was ok with that. The biggest problem was the fake butter oil that they put on the rolls to toast them up. The oil had a strong chemical taste that I couldn't get past. My bottom bun was saturated, so I ate the top only. The top had some oil, but not as much as the bottom. Not really an enjoyable sandwich. The fries were great! They were hot and fresh. Bummed about my deli experience. I don't think I need to try again. Upon being overcharged for a handful of small items, I simply asked that I be able to pay the price that's marked on the item itself. The cashier said that the register overrides any markings on the products. When she showed me the receipt, I constructively and politely pointed out her error. She proceeded to laugh at me and mocked me in front of other customers because I was "holding up the line over $1". Love this little deli spot, my husband and I have come here several times for our lunch dates and if you haven't checked this little sandwich spot out then you're definitely missing out. You don't think much of it, because when you pass by you just think it's another shell gas station, but don't be fooled, inside has much more. This deli has been here for awhile, and I think it gets overshadowed by all the restaurants nearby. Brookside Deli makes tons of different food items. You can literally come here for for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can even come here for your sweet tooth cravings. This shell station doesn't only have the Brookside Deli inside, but Smith's Bakery is also inside this shell station as well as Dewar's ice cream and Nestle Ice Cream and for all you sweet tooth lovers, you'll know what I'm talking about when you walk in. What's really good about this place is, you can literally stand there and watch the workers put your food together knowing that they are following food prep protocol by using gloves at all times, and they change their gloves when handling meat or other products in betweTables are also clean and they have tons of seating inside as well as seating in their little patio area. Can't make it to Pismo Beach guys? They serve Splash Cafe's signature clam chowder here and if that doesn't lure you in, after you have walked in and looked around, I can almost bet that you won't even know what to get when you first visit here. There's so much good food here for a decent price. Food here is not pricey at all and very worth it. All the sandwiches I have tried so far, I definitely would order it again. I have tried the tuna melt, French dip, Philly cheese, and turkey sandwich and I have tried so many different desserts. The cookies are humongous gourmet cookies with chunks of goodness. Had been getting gas here forever because it's located close to CSUB campus. Always have to fill up tires because two of them have slow leaks. Never had issues before with machine. Fast forward to now, I notified them 3-4 times over 5 week period that their air pressure machine wasn't working properly (either not enough pressure for max 45 psi tire or nozzle attachment not functioning properly). Even called and left name and number once, call not returned. Machine not fixed, manager never present to talk to when I was there in evenings. Now forced to get gas somewhere else because I can't fill up tires (at which I have no trouble with filling tires the two times I've done it since this issue started). Even if they fixed, not going back. I'm just one dude and a drop in the bucket business-wise, but if I am having this problem there are certainly others having it as well (or will). read more

Welll I'm not sure what happened at this location but the breakfast has been really bad the last 2 times. Last week we got the chorizo, egg & potato burrito. They changed from has browns to a country type potato and they were rock hard, old and shriveled. I really thought it was a fluke so I ordered a burrito today but without potato's and WOW. I had to throw the entire thing away. It was completely soaked in grease. A coworker thought it had cheese on top but nope, it was just pure grease. After a week the staff knew my order and name and were always very friendly. Now, years since ive been a regular, they still remember me. Little things like that are nice. Obviously the food was good and kept me coming back. My usual was a fresh made turkey deli sandwich and sometimes a cup of soup. Great location near my house. It has just about everything you could want. It has a full deli with a hot grill with daily specials (including Breakfast). This location has a large Smith's Bakery, Dewars ice cream etc. I came for the turkey, provolone on squaw bread very good. Dang, these kids whip up a fantastic lunch! In fact, when I work on this side of town I am kind of addicted to lunch here. Great deli with tons of selections. The hot prepared sandwiches are delicious, as well as the pre-made ones. They also have great homemade side salads like pasta, broccoli, and basque cottage cheese! I've had numerous sandwiches, but the specials are always hard to beat. The meatloaf sandwich was insane. I also like the deep pit one. I love stopping in Brookside deli to grab a quick breakfast. My usual order is nothing fancy, just 1/2 order of Biscuits and Gravy, occassionally some bacon, and maybe a hash brown... Today was definitely an off day for them. I saw two orders that ordered after me get their food first, first by like 5-10 mins. As a part-time server, I understand that every order is different and requires different prep times, it totally didn't bother me. After I waited for about 15 minutes, the supervisor (nice lady) came out and asked me what I had ordered-I told her and she went straight to work on finding what had happened. Apparently there was a huge take out order that was called in around the same time (28 sandwiches) and the kitchen just forgot about my order. She insisted on comping my order....I said that wouldn't be necessary, I wasn't in a huge hurry anyways. She still took me to the register and handed me a few dollars anyways. Oh, and there was extra bacon in my to go box too :) My boyfriend usually gets either the chicken fried steak or the breakfast burrito-and loves them both. They also offer about 12 different coffees-different flavors and brews, I love to jog down here and grab a cup and a newspaper to walk home with. This is a beautiful market located across from The Oaks neighborhoods. The market features a very nice Deli, a Smiths bakery, and a nice selection of wines and spirits, as well as anything else a mini market would offer including Gifts and Shell gasoline. The problem with this convenience store is that it isn't convenient at all, not only is it not open 24 hours, it closes at 8:00pm; I stopped frequenting this store because I regularly had to go somewhere else anyway because it closes so early. The other problem is the prices; higher than any other store in town including Shell gasoline and Smith bakery. I recommend going down the street to Grand Island; same thing, always open, better prices. read more

In larger cities this would be a typical convenience store, but in Bakersfield this is an upscale high-falootin mini-mart with gourmet groceries, deli, salads, ice cream and candy by Dewar's, fresh pastries by Smith's Bakery, soda fountain and fancy cheeses. I like the sandwiches here. They use Boar's Head meats and bread by Pyrenee's, and the result is very pleasing - but a little pricey for those not used to paying $7 for a good sandwich. The macaroni salad is very good here, and they even use the short macaroni. And you have your choice of getting Dewar's ice cream by the scoop or by the gallon. By partnering with some local institutions Brookside has made a niche for itself as a one-stop shop for good homegrown brands. read more

We lived around the corner from Brookside Deli at the Oaks about ten years ago and used to grab the Brookside Combo on squaw bread quite often. Driving home from vacation today we found ourselves northbound on the 99 and driving through Bakersfield. We decided to checkout our old neighborhood and wound up grabbing lunch at Brookside. I used to like this place. Was in the area to get gas, so went back today after I hadn't been there in a long time. It was during busy lunch time and there was only one person working there. Poor lady was making and taking orders by herself. What happened here? Used to have 3 people working up front. Ordered a ham and pepper jack sandwich in a croissant to go. Got home and found the sandwich was soggy and lettuce appeared sort of brown and wilted. Probably not a good sandwich to get to go. My fault since didn't realize this was a hot sandwich since I usually ordered their club. The lettuce didn't appear fresh regardless. They had a sign up for $1.39 for scoop of Dreyer's ice cream. Looked inside their cooler but most of the ice cream looked like possibly been open for awhile. You know, when it starts to look hard when been in the freezer for awhile? Probably don't sell a large volume of ice cream there, so decided against it. Will pick up some from the grocery store tonight. read more
