I didn't expect much going here on a late Sunday night but I was actually blown away by how good the BBQ Beef Brisket Sandwich was. I got it on rye bread because I had never tried it before but the shocking part was the quality of the meat. It was tender but with a good chew and generously coated in bbq sauce. Some of the sauce also soaked into the crispy bread and when accompanied with the slaw, I got so many beautiful textures and flavors all in one bite. I would definitely get it again. I love this place. Sandwiches are superb, very fresh tasting. Service is pretty decent. Love the chicken pesto! The tomatoes and mozzarella are always especially delicious. Wow. Having gone to UC Santa Cruz as an undergrad, and having mediocre food, I would say coming to Bruin Plate was a total upgrade. UCLA is rated top 5th dining hall in the country (http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/09/30/best-college-for-food-in-america-for-2013/) - not sure who will agree with me though on that source! One day my friend and I ventured to our first dining hall (not Bruin Plate) and when passing by Bruin Plate, there was a huge line of 50 people. We weren't sure if there was something special going on, or what. Anyway, it made us eager to try it another time! The theme at this dining hall is healthy eating. The second time we came there wasn't a line at all. Perfect! We headed in and wow, when you walk in, the ambiance feels like a Vegas buffet. The lighting, the decor, the music even, was all very swanky and sophisticated, but not in a tacky way (like some Vegas ones can get). There is a regular dining area, but if you walk far enough, you can also sit by the floor-to-ceiling windows that you see when approaching the dining hall from the outside. Very beautiful, letting in terrific natural sunlight. There are several different stations, in which the chefs portion out small little 1 serving dishes. Some examples include quinoa with butternut squash, grilled chicken, wheat spaghetti with shrimp (or vegan option), various types of flatbreads, potato hash, etc. They are also all-you-can-eat. The desserts are mostly fruits and all healthy things, since it's a healthy dining hall. Also, to go along with healthy cuisine, this entails no salt or pepper shakers on the tables for your taste! I thought that was kind of wack at first, but honestly the dishes are still cooked with salt or other flavorings, so it's not like it's salt free. I didn't feel a need to add salt (if you were wondering). Drinks were amazing. Instead of unhealthy soda, they have a spritzer machine. You can choose from pineapple, apple juice, cranberry, orange juice, etc. spritzers!! Basically carbonated water + a tasty juice. Man were those good - loved the apple juice one. If spritzers aren't your thing, they also had Fair Trade coffee, organic teas, and your regular machine made cappuccino, latte and/or expressos too. Can't wait to return! I've never eaten more quinoa and kale in my life. B Plate is not your traditional dining hall. This is the "healthy option" on campus. It's arguably the most popular too, and it is definitely the newest. Grilled protein, tossed salads, freshly bowled grains, and a flat bread oven light up this huge dining hall. I feel like this food would be downright discussing for someone who is looking for american comfort food, because this stuff is not only innovating, it is different. Putting a purple potato in your mouth is a bit of a scary thought the first time. This place gives you fruit for dessert, an you know what, I'm okay with it. It's great to have a lighter nontraditional healthy option on campus. The students obviously embrace it. It is the hall that I always want to show off to my friends who visit because it is so unique. Ahhh, Bruin Plate. My favorite of the many dining halls on the UCLA campus. Why? Because I do my feel as guilty as I normally do when I dine on campus. Bruin Plate (or B-Plate) is known for serving fresh and healthy food, which are all portioned for those watching their weight aka--the avoid the freshman 15 (or transfer 30). Haha not really, but that is a good hypothesis, right? Anyway, here's my breakdown of BP: -Bruin Plate, like many other dining halls, is buffet style. Everything is FRESH, FRESH, FRESH! The food is made and served as the plates disappear on the counters by hungry students. There are many options here for those who are meat eaters, vegetarian or vegan. One can also "customize" their plate (by simply shouting out to the preparer, "May I please have just the _____?" Or in my case, "May I have one with no cheese?" -There is NO soda here! However, they have fruit infused water here. The flavor changes daily from pineapple to raspberry to citrus and just about any other fruit that can be infused with water. Bruin Plate also serves fruit "spritzers" similar flavors to the infused water.) There is also organic tea and coffee. -Dessert here is basically freshly cut pineapple, grapes, and oranges. As well as non-sliced fruit such apples, bananas, pears, and tangerines. BP typically has one type of "non-healthy" dessert that changes daily. -Avoid the hours from 6-8 P.M. because it sure does get crowded inside and out. I looooove me some Bruin Cafe! The sandwiches and soups are good, the pastries are delicious, and the coffee is heavenly! I visit most often for lunch. The chicken caesar wrap is really good, and the salads are decent. I love how they have an express line for the salads and wraps. When I'm in a rush, these are my go-to items. The sandwiches are also yummy. My favorite is the roasted turkey (the item I order the most). The combination of the dijonaise and the cranberry chutney really makes for quite the treat. This sandwich comes on a French roll, but you can ask for whole grain sliced bread for a healthier option. You can order a whole sandwich or you can get a B-Caf combo (half sandwich, half salad or soup). On certain days I go with half turkey-half clam chowder soup. On certain days they have shrimp corn chowder or tomato soup, which are both delicious. My only issue with B-Caf is how long it can take during lunch hour to get your meal if you're not getting an express salad or wrap. I don't enjoy spending my entire lunch waiting for my lunch! I occasionally get lunch here, and always use my extra swipes here. For lunch - tuna or turkey (no cranberry chutney). I always ask for the regular whole wheat bread instead of the bun or baguette it comes on because those are too bulky! Both sandwiches taste great with a little poupon and pepper! The pastry selection is excellent. They have every kind of bagel - the everything, blueberry, raisin, egg, and onion. I can't believe I'm writing a review on a campus dining hall, but here goes. First of all, if you are not a student, you need to go to one of the front desks to buy a voucher. After that's all said and done, you can make your way inside for the dining experience that is "B Plate." In addition to having a sleek modern look and feel, the B Plate has trendy food like freshly squeezed kiwi juice, tofu burgers, Asian style noodles topped with tilapia, gourmet beef burgers, woodfire grilled pizza, and shepherd's pie. There is also a fully stocked salad bar and dessert station. Furthermore, each dish is relatively healthy and doesn't come with too many calories. However, I couldn't stop myself from grabbing 10+ plates, making the experience unhealthier than intended. This is sad because some of the sandwiches are actually more fattening than the burritos at Rendezvous (check the nutritional facts online). If you're going to make me fat, the least you can do is make me happy with flavorful entrees. The default bread they make the sandwiches on is this white bread that's HARD AS A ROCK. I highly recommend you opt for whole wheat or honey wheat bread lest you enjoy what feels like biting your laptop. The clam chowder and chili are bland. The chicken wrap is bland. The salad is bland. But damn it, it's open until 2am and I have visited it many a late night cramming for midterms that I can't even bring myself to rate it less than 3 stars. Bruin Cafe, known as B Caf by all UCLA students, is the go to for food past midnight. Open till 2 AM, you will often see "Club B Caf," aka the hoards of drunk students who are coming back to the hill to satisfy their drunchies. Or it can even be "Club B Caf" when it's midterms and everyone is getting their coffee on. They have madeover their sandwiches since last year- the bread, the lettuce and meat is a LOT better. Unfortunately, this resulted in the end of the beloved cranberry turkey sandwich that was a go-to for most students. Luckily, I am a big fan of the new chicken ranch and swiss sandwich. Go to the back line if you are ordering anything that is "on the go." This would include the wraps and salads. This new method has unfortunately lead to a shortage of food by the end of the night. The front line is used for ordering sandwiches, drinks and pastries. There is a wide assortment of smoothies, but not the best quality. The smoothies are good the first quarter of the way, but then you get sick of them. I definitely prefer the smoothies at B Plate's breakfast on the go. Bruin Plate (aka B-Plate or BP) is the newest dining hall addition to the UCLA campus! It focuses on fresh, healthy, sustainable food choices, which is a much-needed addition to all the calorie-loaded alternatives on the hill (I'm looking at you, 1500-calorie Rendezvous chicken nachos). Additionally, in terms of dining atmosphere, Bruin Plate and Feast make De Neve and Covel look like artifacts; there's just no comparison. Because it's still relatively new, lines are still really long but nothing too unusual. Feast at Rieber was definitely a lot worse when it first opened. I'm a fan of all the healthy choices, especially the greek yogurt and frozen fruit, as well as all the different types of meats/veggies offered on the grill. Bruin Cafe! I miss you! From my time at UCLA, this place definitely cashed in a good majority of my swipes from my Bruin Premiere 19 plan. After class, dance practice, a meeting, or whatever, I know that I couldn't go wrong with a hot turkey sandwich and a caribbean smoothie! Sometimes there's a long line, but it's worth the wait. My friends living off campus also banked on my extra swipes. They DO take credit cart in addition to swipes, guys! They have changed the menu since I've lived on campus but the best sandwich is still the Roasted Turkey on Whole Grain Wheat bread. The cranberry sauce just makes the sandwich. I was able to get a free meal there today and it is still as good as I remembered. From what I remember from my life in the dorms, it can get pretty busy around finals and around 10pm when the new meal period starts. The cafe serves coffee bean & tea drinks, but when it gets busy quality goes out the window. I did like getting smoothies and pastries especially if I was in a rush to get to class. BCAF is seriously my #1 love... This past year I came here basically every morning to get a latte and pastry for breakfast and I honestly LOVE the lattes. You can even call me obsessed. Started with tea lattes then moved on to vanilla before ending the year with cafe lattes. It's got a slightly spicy flavor that you don't expect out of clam chowder. Wraps: Eh. Haven't tried the sandwiches. The only other entree I like here is the Chicken Wonton Salad. One of my favorite places for takeout! If you are on the run and need a quick order, I suggest the chicken wonton salad and the meatball sub. These and the wraps are often made beforehand so you don't have to wait! It can get a bit crowded sometimes especially before midterms and finals - the longest I have had to wait for an order is 30 min... So I get these options quite often. Another more healthy option is to get the turkey sandwich on whole grain bread! For their drinks, the smoothies and tea lattes are the best! Coffee is mediocre and the ice blendz mocha is disgusting but the caramel one is decent. Although not listed on the menu, you can choose from an array of teas for your brewed/tea latte! I suggest the strawberry cream and Phoenix dragon pearl. I usually get these with soy milk and half sugar but the quality seems to vary with the baristas. I love the blueberry scones and strawberry cream danishes. Unfortunately, the calorie/fat content of the drinks and pastries are very high. Food is great! Way better than the typical res-hall food I'm used to. My only issue was their marketing:"health-themed". Yes, the food is fresh, organic, and nutritious, but only in small quantities, which is why their plates are so small. But with small plates distributed buffet style, you'll be going for seconds. Soon you're packing on tons of calories without even noticing. Each entree is 400 calories or less, but no one just gets one. Add dessert, 'cause come on, dessert... 200 and less. You'll probably consume about 500 calories or more, which is more than recommended per meal on average. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot healthier than the other food available on campus, but just be careful. Got use out of my meal plan and got the combo meal. Opted for the turkey sandwich and at the time I was eating it, it was really good! However, when I refrigerated my other half of the sandwich to eat the following afternoon it was doused in oil. Confused, I had no clue where it came from! And then it hit me... Bruin Cafe - A staple to every UCLA student living on campus. Most of the food here is actually pretty decent, until you get sick of it, that is. I was always a fan of the tuna melts, pumpkin muffins, and breakfast croissants. Their bakery overall is really fantastic, though it tends to get pretty crowded in the mornings and evenings. I hate the salads; there is so much wrong with them I'm not even going to get started. The soups are pretty decent. The smoothies are okay. The breakfast croissants are heavenly. Haven't been back here in ages. I definitely don't miss waiting in those crazy lines at 1 am. Though it is a great place to recycle your extra meal points at the end of the quarter. read more

After two years of living on the dorm, the one thing I'm going to miss the most are the TEA LATTES. I survive the day thanks to these babies. I normally get the Japanese sencha tea latte, but they ran out of that tea...and never restocked so boo for that. The Jasmine Phoenix Pearl is my next go-to tea, but it's sometimes too sweet, sigh. Pastries are pretty bomb. Vegan cookies and Rice Krispies ftw. And I dig the chocolate croissants and of course the bagels. What's annoying is one swipe for an ice bended drink or smoothie. Not worth it at all unless I seriously need to get rid of swipes. Bcafe also frequently fails with my orders, but I blame it on the rotation of workers and how most are newb students. Numerous times where my soy tea lattes and coffees turned out MEH or they have to redo my sandwich order 'cause they messed up. Kind of annoying when you're in a rush. Wait time SUCKS when it's near midterms and finals when people are trying to get rid of swipes or need late night coffee so AVOID if you can. read more

Bruin Cafe or "B Caf" as known by students and staff is more of a to-go dining option. Students typically use their meal plan swipes to order food but if you're visiting, you can use cash. BCaf offers specialty sandwiches, soups, salads, smoothies where you can customize your own, coffee, teas, fruit cups, yogurt parfaits, pastries, cereal, breakfast bowls (for breakfast only) and oatmeal on the go. For dinner which starts at 5 pm, each day has a special menu item like buffalo wings which are currently offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fountain drinks and sides are typically available with your main entree. One of my favorite items from the menu is their green tea ice blended smoothie. I also enjoy their turkey and provolone sandwiches with a side of potato and mac salad. Overall, B Caf is a nice option if you're unable to dine-in but there are indoor and outdoor seats available for you.
