Establishment had an unpleasant stinch...the waitress didn't give us time to order, we felt like we were being rushed as she came back every minute...the turkey plate I had not worthed at all; turkey was like 1 slice which was dry if not for the gravy, dressing tasted horrible, green beans were like straight from the can...my husband's chicken n shrimp plate; the chicken didn't taste so fresh n no flavor, the onion rings tasted like flour encrusted not seasoned right...the prices aren't worth the quality of the food at all! I'm not sure if they're trying to cut corners and save money or have people in the kitchen who don't know how to cook, who knows but it's disappointing that this isn't how I know Bud Jones to be...Smh! read more

Today we came in for lunch and were sorely disappointed. I had the CFS and fries, I asked for Rings and said something but never received the rings, the CFS was dried out and not good at all.....First my wife asked for Liver and Onions "Sorry we don't have it" so she had the Fish Combo. My wife likes this place. She ate the chicken fried steak and I had fish & shrimp. I was not impressed. The shrimp was over cooked. The fish was not bad. Onion rings were ok. I tried some of the chicken fried steak. It was too stringy/chewy for me. Men's bathroom was also not the cleanest. They had one paper towel roll that was sitting on the counter. When my dad was stationed at Security Hill on Kelly, he and his lunch crew used to almost always venture out into the southside to eat. And of course at the time, his love for their chicken fried steaks was handed down to me, my little sis and our mom. We even preferred it over the Jailhouse Cafe. But the fact that this place has been around for damn near forever definitely shows. I don't care to drive all the way over here and I especially don't care for this somewhat of a dive anymore - even if they do give you your money's worth. I've been searching for The Great Chicken-fried Steak since I've moved back to Texas. After a visit here, I'm still looking. To quickly break down my meal: App of onion rings: Just so-so. Batter tasted of fried. Yes, just fried. Which isn't always a bad thing, but this was bland, tasteless, and overcooked. Even the onion inside had no flavor because the rings were overcooked. Green salad: Way overdressed. Tasted like a bowl of salad dressing, not salad. Side of fries: The power to the restaurant must have been cut off midway through cooking because that's how these tasted: limp, greasy, and half-cooked. CFS: The cream gravy didn't taste like cream at all. In fact, I think it probably didn't have any and was made only with water. The steak was overly battered, which I can excuse, since I like some fried batter. But since the meat didn't have much flavor to it, altogether it just ended up tasting like fried batter. Overall, a definite disappointment except for the service. Our server was swamped but she checked in regularly and came across as genuinely nice and caring. If not for the good service, this would have rated only one star. read more

Great food! Love these old town restaurants that have been around for years! Had the chicken fried chicken plate with mashed potatoes, white gravy and green beans. So good and would highly recommend! Our waitress even remembered that we mentioned we were celebrating our dad's 80th birthday so she brought out a group of her coworkers and they sang the birthday song for my dad. They made his day! This is my Go-To place for Fried Fish. Really, that is the only thing we've ever ordered. Also - I've never eaten In. Only ordered for Pick Up. So while I can't say anything about the service or atmosphere I can say that when I go to pick up my food it is usually a very packed , crowded & busy place. As for the food - We LOVE the family sized 16 piece Fried Fish Dinner. The pieces are HUGE, and there is always more than 16 of them :) Nice, big white fish that is lightly fried to a crispy, golden color. It always comes with fries (boo! they are soggy and cold 100% of the time) but we prefer Hushpuppies so we usually order 8 or 10 of those on the side. For us this is a nice change up from Friday night Pizza or Chicken. Didn't want to forget - the tarter sauce that comes with is delicious as well, and I aways wish they would give us more! read more

This place is nostalgic for me... That's why it's getting three stars. My grandparents love to take us there and the food is good. Good fried fish and great thousand island dressing. Service is alright, but thats not what is the killer. There is a saying that goes... "You can tell what a restaurant's kitchen looks like based on the way their bathrooms are kept." Yeah... Came here during lunch hour around noon and was seated very quickly. Waitress came and took our orders and the food came out in about 10 minutes. I got the fish plate which tasted good and was very inexpensive. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. Would definitely recommend coming here. I've been eating here for about 25 years. The place has its ups and downs, but for the past year it has improved much. Each time I go the food is hot and fresh. I love the tarter sauce and the homemade 1000 island. The homemade onion rings are always a must. Don't go when it's too busy but during the week. Terrific Country Fried Steak. The CFS is huge, thick and holds up well to a full-on slather of gravy. I like mixing cream and brown. :p Nice and messy! The house salads are my favorites of this cluster of restaurants in South San Antonio. The dressings are wonderful! Bud Jones is a well known restaurant my boyfriend and I go to occasionally. We love the chicken fried steak enough to drive across town. I think we would go more often if it weren't so far. I'm giving Bud Jones 5 stars for the OUTSTANDING service we received from our waiter JOHN. The restaurant was busy, so it took a while to get seated. Once seated John was quick to take our drink orders, and keep them topped off. We didn't have to ask for a refill at all. There were three of us and we all ordered the chicken fried steak, each with different sides. He carefully took our orders down and made sure we received the right meals. I have been told by many that this establishment was the best place in San Antonio to have the largest chicken fried steak. I have also been told that this is the best place to find the most tender quality cut of beef in San Antonio. Well, after visiting the establishment, I feel the need to say that both of those statements are true facts. My initial impression of the restaurant from first seeing it was very old school. It looked sort of late sixties early seventies. I felt the decor was a good factor as it added to the ambiance which was very low key and laid back. The lighting reminded me of old school cafeteria lighting which enabled me to read the menu without having to put on my glasses. The dining area was very spacious and clean. The two main staples of this restaurant are the largest chicken fried steak and the all you can eat fish. I am not a seafood fan so, I stuck to the steak. Upon being seated, we were immediately greeted and had our soft drink orders promptly filled. We then ordered two orders of the cheese quesadillas and received those promptly. In all honesty, it was a simple cheese quesadilla but they were grilled to perfection and would definitely order them on a return visit. Our refillable soft drinks were never empty nor did we ever have to ask. The wait person was attentive and made sure it was taken care of. Right after we completed our appetizer, our soups and salad were delivered and right after we were done, our entrees arrived fresh and hot from the kitchen. There was so much food as far as portion size that we could have invited another person and shared what we had and still been full. The massive slab of chicken fried steak was enough for two. The steak was tender and breaded evenly. The meat was cooked to perfection and was generously bathed in a homemade country gravy which complimented the entrée. The homemade mashed potatoes in country gravy were the perfect compliment to the meal. The cup of beef barley soup had a pre-made canned taste to it and the pre-made dinner roll was average. A nice homemade soup and some fresh baked biscuits would have made the meal perfect. Despite the soup and roll, I would definitely recommend paying this place a visit. I would suggest trying the chicken fried steak meal as it is generous, well done and extremely reasonably priced. For a smaller sized appetite, there is a lady's portion of the chicken fried steak. If beef is not your style, the chicken fried chicken which is just as large is just as tender and delicious... And yes, all white meat... I will tell you that you will definitely not walk out hungry. There is also Mexican Food, a double burger, as well as shrimp and other seafood. Basically, there is something for everyone and the staff were friendly. So many bad reviews yet when I walked in the door the place was packed. I was greeted immediately and seated. The hostess bright my drink right away. My waitress was friendly and attentive. Ordered roast beef with onion rings and green beans. While I have had better roast beef I still found it tender and tasty. Onion rings were fresh and on point. Green beans were delicious. Bud Jones is a family tradition. My family has been coming here since I can remember. One of my first memories in a restaurant was putting quarters in the jukebox. My wife and I have now been back in San Antonio for like 2 years and my wife loves it also. She loves diner food and this is by far one of her favorite diners. She is partial to diners due to New England being a big diner haven. The chicken fried steak is crispy and juicy, the biscuits huge and fluffy and people say that eggs can't be ruined so they are easy enough; however, it is not as easy as people may think. The eggs here are always perfect. The service is great and every server we have ever had have always made it feel homey.
