Bud Jones has been a southside gem for many years. My family and I have been coming here since I was a kid. Out of town guests always remark on how good the customer service is and how drinks are always kept full. Whether here for breakfast or dinner, the portions are always huge and consistently good. The homemade biscuits are light and fluffy and you can get a hearty breakfast for less than $6 here. The chicken fried steak is cooked perfectly crispy and not greasy. Enchiladas and hot sauce some of the best in SA. Kudos to their never ending fish plate. I highly recommend Bud Jones. read more

This was my first time coming here. We ordered from the breakfast menu. The coffee was VERY weak and I had to ask the waitress to remake it. I ordered the carne Guisada breakfast taco. There was very little meat in it but it was filled with a very thick brown sauce. I guess they were trying to compensate for not putting hardly any meat in it. The Pancakes were pretty good. The food overall isn't bad for the price. Just stay away from the Carne Guisada. The dining area and bathrooms really need to be updated. The waitress could've been friendlier. She was just straight to the point and didn't seem like a happy person. This place was okay but I don't think I will come back here. I will stick to Denny's. It has much better breakfast. read more

We stopped by for lunch today. The hostess and waitress were both very friendly. Our waitress was also attentive. We started with fried pickles. The serving was large and the pickles were good. We had the chicken fried steak, fried fish, corn, and Canadian cheese soup. Everything was good except for the chicken fried steak. There was absolutely ZERO seasoning. It was bad. I am so glad I didn't pay for this meal. My dad wanted to take me and my niece out to dinner. I was hoping for something good when we end up on the south side at bud jones. Blah. Took forever to get our drinks. The foods on the menu seemed boring and over priced. decided to order chicken fried steak, cup of soup, and onion rings. Dad got the same with different sides and the brat got a hamburger and fries. My soup was over salted. And mostly broth. The kids hamburger looked old as did the fries. I guess it was ok. I went to bud jones about 3 weeks ago & was very disappointed. My waitress was really nice . The food tasted & looked like something I used to eat @ the school cafeteria. My dad n I ordered the largest chicken fried steak plate with different sides, waiter brought our plates my dad had 2 big pieces of chicken fried steaks n I had one...asked the waiter why she said well it depends on the cook if he wants to put 1 or 2 pieces REALLY!!!! When I hear the name Bud Jones, redneck joint is usually the first thing that springs to mind. Yes the atmosphere is extremely hickish and so is the music selection (most of it consists of country and Tejano) Now I don't have anything against country music. That's not my point so I'm in no way bashing the place. Yes to those of you who hate the wait, the place gets extremely packed and very busy and the waitstaff seems overworked. Hell, I got frustrated at the long wait for service one night I had to walk out and ate somewhere else. But it is a southside icon and the food is really good. Chicken fried steaks, chicken fried chicken, onion rings, fried fish and shrimp are the most popular dishes ordered here. The place is a greasy spoon so don't expect anything healthy here. The food may be artery clogging but it is delish and cheap. It's right up there with Pig Stand but just above Tip Top and way above Lulu's. This is where neighborhood locals eat so if you're looking for a 3 lb cinnamon roll to be served here then my friend, you have came to the wrong place! read more

I've been coming to Bud Jones since I was a kid and I always remember the food being good and tasty and the service being fast and friendly. I'd say the food isn't as good as I remember as a kid, perhaps my palate is a bit more discerning as the refined adult that I am today (HA! I lie a lot) but I do feel like the food isn't as good as it used to be. I would like to see the quality of the food improve enough to make me drive that way more often. I had the Ladies CFS and wow. I also asked for both gravys to see which one worked the best. I say the brown was best. It was very savory. The nice part about the CFS was that it was thicker than most without being tough. Most CFS meats are thin to achieve tenderness. I also had the four bean soup and that was surprisingly good. The chicken fried stead tastes like the meat was old, the mashed potatoes are instant and the gravy was literally congealed. Worst food I have had in years. Another customer left when we did and asked us if we liked the food. When I said no he said his was very bad. Had fish tacos and instead of chipotle dressing he thought it was thousand island dressing. He said his mother got very sick after eating there. Personally, I will never eat there again. read more

Usually a great experience here, but was floored by the negativity that greeted us before we even walked in the door. One employee was getting reprimanded in the front,and decided the most mature way to handle the situation was to yell, and cry. Walked in, and the cashier, who a customer had to wait at least 10 minutes for, greeted her with her lip trembling,and looking like she was going to break down crying at any minute. 15 minutes into our meal, you could hear kitchen staff screaming at each other, one telling the other to let it go, and calm down. The food was delicious as always, and our waitresses,and one waiter that has been an employee here for almost 25 years tried their best to apologize for the unprofessionalism, which they shouldn't be, considering they were the only ones attempting to give great customer service. I know life is hard,and coworkers can rub you the wrong way, but c'mon. Be adults, shake that mess off,and keep on steppin! Mgmt., You need to have one heck of a "coming to Jesus" with your employees. We usually go around brunch time so some of us have breakfast while others order lunch. The food is good and service is usually friendly. Now It's been sometime since I had been to Bud's. last time I was there it was truly a bad experience, food, staff the whole works was bad. On my most recent visit 1-7-14 was I pleasantly surprised, had the Chicken fried steak, boy was that a good steak not to crusty very flavorful the mash taters were just as good. the wait staff were on their game attended to very well. RODENT-chewed cracker package was given too us. My boyfriend was about to put in his soup when he noticed each package just had one cracker on the inside. then we saw the rodent holes and left immediately. We just wanted something local on the south side, but the prices are very high considering most of the menu is fried and that the bathrooms are gross. Ignore the pretty "Clean Restrooms" sign. I havent been there in about a couple of years. Finally went there about two weeks ago and let me tell you the food was cold and the fries tasted like they have been sitting there. I got the chicken tenders. Gross! My father in law got the chicken fried steak. No taste. My husband got some nachos and thats where we had a problem. Plate was 7.99. A big plate with 7 or 8 chips with a little bit of cheese and meat right in the middle a small portion of salad. Its like a dollar a chip. I grew up eating at this place. These days I never go there unless I'm treating my godmother to a meal and she insists, though I suspect the nostalgia and memories are what brings her here and not the food. I would take her to eat once a week and this used to be a staple but these days we almost never go there. There is one older waitress who always covers the same section, straight in past the register but closer to the kitchen than the far wall. Abandon hope all ye who enter. If she is your server do not expect much, do not give in to hope - you are now part of the forsaken. That goes back to to when I couldn't see over the counter and I'm not counting that against the place because it has always been like that. I'll start with what used to be the standard go-to for me, the Fried Fish. These days its common to find the middle of one undercooked (not frozen but cold and undercooked). It has even happened that me and whoever I'm there with to both leave a broken up fish plank on the plate because of this. The french fries are usually alright, though they'll sneak in some (c)old ones under some fresh ones. There chicken fried steak isn't bad, it's just not good. It looks nice on the plate but sometimes it just looks old or rebreaded-refried or something that i can't figure out. The burgers are like the fries, "usually alright", but often enough something is wrong (usually stale bread that's just been heated up or reheated old patty, sometimes lettuce they clearly shouldn't have used). Their soup used to be something that was always fresh and always good, but these days it just seems like they're using premade or re-re-reheated soups more often. Which just isn't what we went there for. I give the soup its own section because my family used to always opt for soup over salad and we used to just really like it.
