My family and I have been coming to this place for years, but after today, we will NOT be coming back. The restaurant doesn't have as many options as it used to, not only that, you need to wait for servers to give you sodas, ice cream and some of their seafood. For an "all you can eat buffet" you are given a ticket a person and allowed to trade it in for 3 oysters or crab which defeats the purpose of an "all you can eat buffet." Regardless of the food being okay and the prices being super high, the service was definitely the worst and the reason why we will not be going back. After sitting for a couple minutes, we decided to get up and grab dessert before we left when the server by our table rushed to us and asked us for a tip MULTIPLE times even after we had told her we were not leaving yet. We ate the last of our food, cleaned up the table and left a tip under the napkin dispenser. As we were walking out, the server rushed to us and repeatedly kept asking for a tip to the point where she almost tripped us. I told her that her tip was under the dispenser and she told me off. I ordered 170 boxed lunch for a school event. They provided a delicious lunch with huge portions. They even accommodated gluten free and vegan/vegetarian requests, had all the food packed nicely, securely, and delivered to the site. With such quantity and delivery time, the food was still warm. You know those "people of walmart" videos? Well this is where they go to eat. I couldn't wait to get out of there.... I was about to gets some mussels, when a giant hairy arm reaches around me and starts serving himself, I stepped aside and Mr 400 pounder gladly stepped in and didn't stop until he had grabbed every single mussel. Again that happened to me at shrimp counter, Mrs 400 pounder just wedged her way in front of me and began to stock up, when she was done she looked at me and giggled. Once back at my table, I was horrified to watch these people eat, the "lady" directly in front of me had somehow procured a serving spoon, she used her hands to load the spoon until it was about the size of an apple, then stuffed it all in her mouth at once. I was so disgusted I had to look away, that's when I noticed the carpeting, saturated with grease and food. I live in the area and finally stopped in with my girl for dinner. We usually go to the buffet spot down by Bayfair Mall but decided to give this place a chance. Wow, umm.... it's just not good. The potstickers were hard and the food tasted not quite right. A bad combination of heated frozen food and sitting out all day baking under heat lamps perhaps. The clams were so overcooked they were falling out of the shells in the tray. The desserts were terrible. They had shrimp chips as a dessert. Seriously.. shrimp chips! And the sponge cake tasted just like actual sponges. Dirty sponges. But the soda was good. Sadly, the ice cream machine was broken so we didn't get that. I will say the staff was very nice. I wish this place would do a MAJOR renovation, kitchen, dining room, and menu upgrade though. Don't think I'll be going back until I see that happen. Fortuna in Italian means 'Luck'. I just ate here tonight, and this will probably be my last meal at this place. I remember when this place use to be filled every single night, and my family and I came here constantly. There were long lines that spilled out the front entrance. After a while, it started to decline and I can see why. We came here tonight just for the fact that they serve cold King crab, which I love...but tonight, it was disgusting. The food choices have not changed for years and years, and I agree with all the bad reviews on this Yelp page. The food sits on the steam trays and looks old and dry. When you take a bite of it, there's a small taste of near-spoilage or expiration. The sushi looks like it's been rotting for days on those platters, with mushy grains of rice and clumpy sauce on top on of the unagi. All the hot food section trays looked half to 3/4 empty (mind you, I was there at 7 PM). The fruit looked so disgusting. Watermelon clumped to look like Playdoh, near-empty tubs of syrup (what used to be full of canned fruit, I guess), and the soup section with everything almost empty and was not refilled anytime during my meal there. Even though it was like this, I tried everything once, even if it looked bad. After the third plate (not filled), I started to feel sick. I don't know if it was the sushi or the hot food but I my stomach started to hurt. After the restroom (which was absolutely disgusting), I wanted to get dessert. My mom complained that their almond cookies were chewy and stale instead of crisp and crumbly. Apparently she knew the waitress (who was the only one working the whole floor) and the waitress told her "it's probably because they're old. They leave them out for days at a time and take them back in every night." After hearing this, I was shocked and appalled. After a while, the waitress came back with a plateful of these "fresh" almond cookies and told my mom to try them, and they were from a fresh case of cookies. I refrained from trying any of the other pastries or desserts that were sitting on those platters. I'd say the only thing good about the meal was the cookies she brought us from the kitchen. It was so good, freshly cooked, large portion dishes. We found out they are the new owners. Went inside their kitchen, very clean. From then on we order freshly cooked dishes every week. The cashier didn't seem to understand us, so we asked to speak to the manager and explained again it was to bring a large group later that week. The lead person on site came to speak with us and showed us the room and the pricing. You would think that if you plan to bring a lot of people somewhere, that *maybe* they would consider giving you a small discount. Yes, I know it's a buffet, but even knocking off a fifty or a hundred bucks would be a nice gesture. He said the manager would be back by 3:00, and we could finalize plans then. We showed up at 3:18pm, after another appointment had gone long, and had planned to eat a late lunch at this place prior to finalizing plans with the manager. The same dumb cashier rang us up, and we noticed it was for *dinner pricing.* Apparently, at 3:15, pricing changes from lunch ($8.95 or so) to dinner ($13.95). We explained that we had been in earlier to talk about bringing a large group later that week, couldn't they cut us a break on the pricing for our meal and give us the lunch price since we were only a few minutes late? We weren't even asking for a freebie or a discount, just honor the lunch price. The cashier looked at us with a blank smile. The "manager" did the same. Sometimes people need to remember what this place is. Its a Chinese buffet and not the buffet at the Mirage in Vegas. When walking into this place a person needs to expect everything that comes with a place like this. I went yesterday for lunch and the first thing that I noticed was the lunch was 8.99 not bad at all until I realized that a drink came with it. Wow that made the deal much better. I did take notice on the weekend/holiday rate and dont know if I will return for 14.99....not worth it. I am basing my review on the lunch I had. Certain things can make a Chinese buffet bad real quick cold food, chewy meat or old oil. Buffet Fortuna did not have any of those. The fried items tasted fresh and were nice and crispy. The meat items seemed to use fresh meat and not bad cuts and all of the food items were quite tasty. I didnt have a salad, but the bar looked very nice. The seafood at lunch did not have a large selection, but that is to be expected for lunch time. Another huge plus was that they kept filling the dishes. No item was ever left empty for long. Reason for the loss of two stars was the price for dinner, I have been there for dinner and its not worth it. Also, after paying for four people I went back to get lunch to go and it came to 4.69. I didnt have cash and pulled out my credit card and the lady at the counter gave me a hard time because I didnt have cash. I told her thats all I had and she started making some big deal on how it was only 4 dollars and pay with cash. Once again I told her I only had a credit/atm card and she huffed and told me next time dont do that. If in the area give it a try just dont set expectations high. read more

Finally a Chinese Buffet that didn't make me feel sick after dining there. Fortuna Buffet is secluded from the freeway so many people not familiar with San Leandro will not bump into this restaurant. You'd have to go towards the downtown area of San Leandro to discover it. As you enter you have very friendly Chinese ladies greeting you with smiles. The price per plate is $12.99 for lunch on a weekday in the afternoon. The food is actually pretty decent as their menu is typical of any Chinese buffet. The egg rolls are fresh and the sushi is actually not that bad at all! They have a small selection so sushi lovers will be disappointed. The dessert area had cookies and little pastries and many types of puddings to choose from. My boo and I were actually pleased with this "hole in the wall" and definitely will come back =) read more

Alright. So I go to this place with ONE of my friends and we're definitely fans. As far as greasy buffet foods go, this definitely is good. What people don't understand is honestly, with buffets, it's not gonna be OMG AMAZING food but it's going to be BUFFET foods. If you're a fan of Chinese Buffets, this is a great place. Not only was this place overcrowded, but way too much stuff was overlaping and fishy smelling - I've always been told that fish shouldn't SMELL like fish if it's fresh, so that indicated to me that the fish wasn't fresh, which is a big NO! Maybe I'm too picky for this type of buffet, but as I said, a lot of the food area was messy and food overlapped into adjacent trays too much for me to be comfortable with. My girlfriend and I came here yesterday because it was the closest buffet to her house. We saw the 2-star rating on Yelp and figured that it was probably because the people of the surrounding weren't used to the Chinese cuisine. But boy were we wrong. We should have trusted the Yelp system lol. Buffet Fortuna has a pretty smart system. They have you pay for your meal before you go out and see the quality of their food. To be honest, if I would have seen how sad the food looked before I showed up, I would have walked out immediately. The pictures on Yelp looked a lot better than what was actually out on display. We came during dinner and paid $16.50 per person and I think that their overpriced meals are the only reason why this place is still open. Now my review for the food. When I first grabbed my plate, I walked row by row in disgust. A lot of the food here looks like it's been sitting out all day. It's gotten to the point where the top layer of the food had hardened and crusted over. The sushi was on another level expired. I've never been to a buffet and was afraid that I was going to get food poisoned. The staff here at Buffet Fortuna needs to be recertified in food safety. In the 30 minutes that we were there, I only saw them bring out ONE freshly cooked entree. So naturally, that was the only thing I ate besides salad. The salad was honestly the only other safe choice here. And the storage of it was poorly executed as well. They put whole leave iceberg lettuce in a bowl of water. So when you put lettuce on your plate, expect it to be dripping wet. I can go on and on about how horrible this place is but I'm pretty sure if you read this much, you get the point. I just want to end with this thought.
