If you're gonna eat here, 1st- be prepared for WAY overpriced SMALL portions of barely palatable food. Yesterday I ordered fried calamari, a Jersey shore staple, and got a handful of rubber squid. How is it possible to mess up fried calamari. BUMS- here's the recipe, dredge squid in flour - drop into fryer. I also had order chicken parm sandwich. I say I ordered it but I took one bite and threw the whole thing in the garbage. Was that even chicken in the supermarket bread? At first I thought it was raw uncooked chicken but at closer examination, it just seemed like rotten chicken. Do you use frozen breaded chicken breast or actual chicken? BUMS- here's something to consider, one of the best bakeries is right down the block, Park Bakery. Hey how about getting your Italian bread from them? Oh Bum Rogers...The love I have for you is like no other. I have been coming to this joint my whole life and each and every experience is beyond amazing. Great service, decent craft beer selection, and the food is just perfection!!! On the weekends, if you go late, there will always be a wait time..however...do not let that make you run out the door because it is worth it!! There is also a large bar you can sit at while you wait and they give you a cute little lobster that glows and buzzes when your table is ready. The other night I came here with a few friends. There were empty seats at the bar located in the back and decided to take them and have dinner there. Nice clean bar, a bunch of TVs...what's better than having dinner and watching a baseball game!?! Appetizer starters, fresh and delicious pisser clams (steamers) and ahi tuna which was also super fresh and yummy. I have not been here in quite some time, so of course for dinner I had to have their famous garlic crabs! I can not describe how scrumptious these amazing crustaceans are. Loaded with garlic, full of flavor, a ton of crab meat, also served with a baked potato and a piece of corn on the cob. My friends also loved their meals as well. It's pricey. The wait times are insane! The food is decent. Not great, not terrible, decent. The staff was very friendly. They are known for garlic crabs. The flavor is on point, but it's a pretty expensive wrestling match. Unless you LOVE crab, I'd suggest going with something else. The grouper did seem to be previously frozen, not fresh. Of our two grouper orders, the oreganato was spot on in flavor and cook temp, while the Pacific/panko crusted was ice cold. Absolutely fine cup of Manhattan clam chowder. Stellar beer selection with about two dozen on tap. Live music by the bar is a definite plus. Bar area is large. read more

Went to Bum Rodgers after a beautiful day at the beach this week, Tuesday. Arrived before the dinner rush. Sat outside in front. Unfortunately our server was handling the few tables in front and had responsibilities in the back deck. So, needless to say we didn't see him too often. Would have loved a second round of cocktails. First visit and left very disappointed. Lobster bisque was delicious and had a fair amount of lobster pieces. Unfortunately the clam chowder was not as good. Watery, tasted like a weak vegetable soup with mushy vegetables with too much celery. The missing ingredient was clams and flavor. Onto the main courses. I choose the garlic crabs. Great choice, prepared exceptional well, great count. Close to $40.00 dish, for crabs? Way too much, regardless of the amount of crabs served. Loved the garlic crabs. Unfortunately the crab cakes were on the other end of the enjoyment spectrum. Dry, needed to use a magnifying glass to find the crab. The dish should be renamed, "filler and breadcrumbs cakes, with a hint of crab". The remoulade sauce was pretty good. The rice pilaf served with the crab cakes was pasty. Not sure how long the rice pilaf had been laying around. Sorry to bash Bum's, however, in this instance they earned every positive and negative review. read more

Down for the day so we decided to stop for lunch before heading home. Had mussels in garlic and wine sauce as an appetizer along with garlic shrimp. Both were very good with lots of flavor. Sandra had a burger that was way over cooked and I had a fried fish sandwich that was well below average. Fish was not crispy at all and was a bit mushy. The service was actually terrible. We had to wave our server down every time we wanted her and the place was empty. Maybe us and 3 other tables. Most people were at the bar. When we asked her for anything she gave us an attitude. Really average bar food. Fried flounder sandwich wasn't bad but serving it on a hero roll gave it a little too much bread. Had the mussels in a marinara sauce which tasted like ragu and the dressing on the house salad should've been issued a restraining order. The restaurant itself is pretty dilapidated and to be honest, the restaurant food is dilapidated along with it. The prices are pretty high and my stepmother used to make better garlic crabs in her sleep. The potatoes that they serve are completely water logged and NOT GOOD. HOWEVER... The bar specials on Tuesday are the only reason why I will return. Kona Longboard Lager and bar specials are worth braving the disgusting bathrooms in this establishment. The prices are so cheap that it's worth bringing my own Lysol! ;) In conclusion: Skip the sit down dinner, come on Tuesday and sit at the bar for happy hour, bring Lysol and hand sanitizer for the bathroom. read more

Everytime I go to this place is either hit or miss the garlic crabs are great. The pizza is disgusting and almost completely fake. The Ambiance is rather fun and exciting if there is a band playing. I've had their broiled seafood platter and my flounder taste like a dirty wet moldy dish towel. The kids enjoy their chicken fingers and fries and only one order came out, they completely forgot about my second order. read more

Ok the two stars are for the amazing Friday night we had here. Wait a minute...Amazing you say? Only two stars? Why yes my friend Saturday night was so bad that a five star Friday dropped to a two star review. Friday - drinks flowing, local band playing amazing dancey covers and we all went home happy. Saturday we arrive and grab drinks at the bar and then someone goes - I'm a little hungry. So we take one of the empty booths behind the back bar. Waitress comes over and asks if we need any drinks and were like ah no - just got some but...food...she stops us and goes "um the hostess has to approve you sitting before I can help you and you have to get menus from her." Mind you there are still open booths and a mostly empty dining room. So I go over to the hostess and tell her and she's like "uh ok, that's odd - sure take any table, here's some menus" So I go back and we pick out a few apps and try to order. Waitress again gives attitude and is like "no - it's cool you can order from the bar", and we're like - can we order from you? She gives us a dirty look and walks away. Huh? Don't you want a table? Make some money? Ok so we go tell the bartender what just went down and order with him. He goes and has a chat with the waitress which results in an even dirtier look from her. Food comes: Famous crab balls taste like a good crab cake someone else may have made but then threw up on a plate, which you over broiled to burnt and then served. The only thing famous about these is how famously bad they were. The gourmet pizzas - let's call a spade a spade here. This is NOT a gourmet pizza - it's a bar pie. A pretty decent bar pie actually. A few more drinks, paid our check and went on our way. Management - you definitely have one bad apple, let's just hope it's not representative of the greater tree. read more

Came here after a freezing cold walk on IBSP. I was eager to warm up with a beer and looking forward to some lunch! I came with a large group- 9 adults and 2 kids. We sat in the back bar area and took over 2 booths and a seat at the bar. Our waitress was pleasant and did a good job with our group but she did forget someone's soup, brought the wrong beer and mixed up one person's dinner. My husband and I ordered the lobster roll and were surprised how good it was! The fries, pickles, and cold slaw were good too! We definitely enjoyed our lunches and the $3 Dos Equis drafts. Menu is a little pricey for what it is but overall it was a good place for lunch and A-OK in my book! read more

We went to Bum Roger's on a Monday night without a reservation. We waited about an hour for a table, which was fine with us because of the entertainment in the bar and fun atmosphere. They were very busy and the staff was a bit stressed. A small mishap on our bill was handled professionally by our waitress and the manager. Our server, Danielle, was outstanding! The family stopped here after a dusk canoe ride off Island Beach State Park. We came here without reservations, but seated relatively quickly. Although it wasn't Friday, most of us were in the mood for some Fried fish. One of my son's, however, was feeling the bucket of hot and spicy crabs. I got the fried combo platter and others got the NJ Fried combo - it had the crab balls apparently. Flounder tasted fresh and flaky, scallops not chewy and shirmp plump. Everyone throughly enjoyed their plate - no leftovers! Breading was crisp and not too doughy. My son had a grand old time with the crabs...and a little help from the waiter. Pretty decent beer selection as well. Place is well staffed in numbers (very important post COVID as many places are suffering from lack of help), so service was prompt. Very good family place for meals, but apparently they have entertainment there as well. Not sure what the atmosphere may be, but it was clear there was security. After all, it is a bar! I would recommend this place for anyone in the area in the mood for seafood. It's reasonably priced so not fancy, but then again we just conquered the bay in a canoe, so we just needed a tasty meal from the sea. Enjoy! read more

Fantastic atmosphere , fair prices and really delicious food . It's a nice blend of family restaurant atmosphere along with a live music , cool restaurant sort of atmosphere . The only thing that was a little annoying was some of the crowd , being so close to island beach , you are pretty surrounded by affluence and some of the patrons seem pretty snooty but this Is no fault of the restaurant staff or owners . So much effort for nothing too filling, but I guess that's what I signed up for. Garlicy broth was decent. Can't recall what the rest of my family ordered, but I know they were underwhelmed. Absolutely love this place There are so many reasons I love coming here. This place is just a fun spot in general. When the outside patio is open that's where I usually hang out. I can chill there all day. The bartenders here are some of the nicest people too. I have never had food here that I didn't like either and I have eaten many different things here. I've come to Bum Rogers many times over the years and have to say this was the first time I was SO very disappointed. We ordered the lobster roll and the crab and lobster stuffed flounder. The lobster roll seemed short on lobster and the roll was soggy with too much mayo - it was like they spread mayo on it. The stuffing of the fish was just mushy and tasteless like it too had been combined with mayo. Sad to say after trying some of both it was so bad almost $50 of food was thrown in the trash. read more

This was my first time here. I would have given this higher rating except for the fact that the service and ambience really wasn't that good. As for the food, the main reason to go to Bum Rogers is to eat the garlic crabs. We ordered one which consists of eight crabs and it was enough for the two of us. It was truly delicious. The rest of the food-- house salad, fish tacos, and lobster bisque, were average. Having said all that, my wife and I enjoyed the experience tremendously. Be prepared to get very messy when eating the garlic crabs. You eat them with your hands and it creates quite a mess, but that's part of the appeal. read more

Read some other reviews that were not too good but I ate there with my daughter and grandkids and couldn't have had a better experience. My promised 30 min. wait was actually 15. Sat in the outside rear area and it was perfect for seven people. Service was prompt, outstanding drinks delivered quickly and the menu was huge. My grandson has celiac's disease and they accommodated him. We mostly had crab and had to take them home because the portions were huge. Many of the items don't list prices because of market variations and since we were in season we were pleasantly surprised with the bill. Looking forward to returning with friends. read more

We went on a weekend night in September 2022, and it was packed! This was the place to be on Labor Day weekend at the Jersey Shore. There was live music, and you could be seated near the music, in the bar area or outside. We chose to sit further from the music so our group of 6 could converse. Our waiter was also the bartender and honestly felt bad for how hard he was working between the bar and our table (as well as others). They have an extensive beer menu which was great. We had a beers, appetizers, and dinner while we were there. The "award winning lobster bisque" had barely any lobster in it and was very disappointing. For dinner, we all ordered a variety of choices, and honestly only 2 out of 6 of us truly enjoyed their meals. We opted out for dessert and went out to get ice cream instead. This place is a GREAT Beach ( shore) bar! They have late night Live music. If that is your gig, it rocks!!! You also can go early and have a Great NJ shore meal. Would highly recommend the fried shrimp platter. The Happy hour specials are awesome too. If Bloody Mary's are your thing. Ask for JOEL to make one for you. I Honestly like this spot because its a divey feel in a beach setting. Super casual and chill, with a food menu thats pricey, but very good & worth it. The happy hour specials for food and drinks are reasonably priced so its not necessary to spend a lot of money here! I love that they're open all year round. The manager (whom i cant remember his name) was so nice & friendly, along with the bartenders. My boyfriend had pasta with lobster and scallops which was delicious, and i had the seafood quesadilla, which was simple and tasty, but it said had scallops and shrimp, mine only had shrimp.
