I didn't realize that SFO had banned single-use plastic bottles throughout the airport, so I went to four different places looking for a bottle of diet soda. Aluminum cans were the only option, so SFO's ban meant that instead of 16.9 ounces of diet soda, I would only be drinking 12. Bun Mee is where I ended up, and I almost balked at the $2.50 price tag. But a portable potable is a portable potable, so I brought the can to the counter and chatted it up with the friendly worker who told me that the plastic-bottle ban started "a long time ago--almost a month!" I smiled and then frowned when an airport surcharge appeared on the screen. Magically, my $2.50 12-ounce can of soda was now $4.04. For a can. That's 33 cents an ounce. For those of you keeping track at home, if I bought one gallon of gas for $4.04, that would be 3.2 cents per ounce. So diet soda, which is extremely simple to manufacture, is ten times more expensive than gasoline, which has a complicated drilling, pumping, transporting, and refining process? Give me a break. The T1 Bun Mee has a slightly different menu from the one located in Terminal 3. This one seems larger with a more customizable menu - you can basically make your own salad bowl (while the other location just had the single five spice chicken salad option). The five spice chicken salad continues to be excellent, and even seemed to have more stuff than the one I had in Terminal 3. Also added an order or sweet potato fries which were shockingly good, literally one of the better renditions I've had. The perfect amount of crispiness to softness. Decent for airport food. Let's be real - this is never going to be an ideal choice. It's in the airport, crazy expensive, and has basically no atmosphere because it's a booth in a terminal. We turned around and went back to Bun Mee for a bahn mi. $13 each. We said not bad. We had Dinosaurs in Pacifica the other day for $11.75 each. Hubby got his usual - the pork combo. I got five spice chicken. The sandwich maker was quick. She reminded us of the ladies at Saigon Sandwiches in the Tenderloin. They move like lightning as did this one. I like their sandwiches, but minus one star for deceptive labelling on the orange juice, where they've fooled me twice in the past year (forgot I fell for the same thing on my last trip). It says "fresh orange juice", and comes in the same plastic cups you'd expect for fresh orange juice, not in cans. "Fresh" means "squeezed directly from oranges, not pasteurized, not reconstituted ". However, even with a short sip, you can tell it tastes identical to the orange juice from a can you'd get on the airplane, with the same sort of flavor changes from pasteurization taste, and lack of fresh orange flavor that's lost in that process. Probably someone in the back room is pouring industrially-sourced OJ into cups. (Or best case, their supplier is selling them reconstituted OJ and claiming it's fresh.) They need to take the word "fresh" off the label, or start actually squeezing it themselves or buying from a source that's squeezing it fresh - it definitely is deceptively labelled as it stands today. read more

Located at the SFO airport in terminal 1, I bought two banh mi: 1) Lemongrass Pork and 2) Combo (Lemongrass Pork and Paté de Campagne). Both sandwiches were good representations of ones I had previously including a crispy bun. While the meat had lots of flavor, the carrot and daikon pickle tasted sanitized or had another unfamiliar flavor. Came by the other day and it was a mediocre experience. The vendor is located next to gate B6. Ordered the fried egg rolls and it was $7 for 2 pieces cut up into 4. The egg rolls were marginally better than typical egg rolls found at a Vietnamese restaurant down the street, except with an airport markup. The kurobata pork and shrimp egg rolls were also mediocre. I loved how the egg rolls were wrapped in saran wrap to keep them moist. The rolls were wrapped using rice noodles and had a ton of carrots, bean sprouts along with a touch of pineapple. Before leaving California I wanted to get a banh mi. I came here immediately and asked for a banh mi cha lua. To my surprise they didn't have it. So I opted to walk around to see if there were different options. If you're in the Harvey milk terminal, this is your go-to spot. After seeing the other options, I gave up and went right back. As for the Service I would say it is pretty good and I would say the pho is good also !! But for both of our Dishes it costs 37 dollars which the pho Cost 18 dollars and the sandwich cost 14 dollars . I came across many Bun Mee franchises during my stay in San Fran. Given mediocre reviews for nearby locations, I stayed clear of their banh mi and figured I'd try Viet sandwiches from a hole in the wall or mom & pop shop (ie: from Little Saigon). Well, unknowingly, a Bun Mee is situated in Terminal 1 at SFO, just a few steps away from my gate, so I decided to try their iced Vietnamese coffee and a combination banh mi. Compared to all the other options at the airport, THIS WAS PRETTY GOOD! I devoured the sandwich during my flight, midway to New York (after a 2.5 hour delay!) and really enjoyed the iced coffee, which I finished within 30 minutes of purchase. I love banh mi and asian food in the morning. This was right by my gate so I figured why not. The meat had a lot of chewy and gross bits in it and the sandwich was not well prepared. They shove all the carrots at the edge so when you take it out of the wrapper, all of it falls out and you're just getting a whole lot of one thing when you bite into it.
