Ordered takeout on a rainy day during the week. The website is outdated and the prices do not match their current menu. When I mentioned this on the phone, the worker said they would let their boss know. When I walked in to pick up, there was just one person at the front taking all the orders, including by phone. I had wait a while until they finished up that customer's order to pick up my food - wasting about 18 minutes of my lunch break. I don't blame the worker but it was really inconvenient. The customer was not sure what to order so it took some time. It could have been solved if they wrote their potential order on a piece of paper and rang up my order on the POS, but because the worker was using it to input and remove orders, I had to wait. Once he got off the phone, he gave me my order in a standard small takeout bag and charged me $0.25 for it. That's wild. I asked him to remove the charge and gave back the bag. I'm ordering a sandwich. It should be wrapped tightly and well. Once I got back, I was surprised to see my sandwich was mostly vegetables. I thought they had skimped on the meats (see photo) but was relieved to see there was meat after all. The pate was thinly applied to my sandwich and my sandwich overall was a bit dry. It should be noted that shaken beef is their most expensive protein option not just for the garlic noodles but for all other dishes (rice bowls, sandwiches, etc.) and that five spice chicken, grilled pork chop, and lemongrass steak are all cheaper. Truly one of the best banh mi sandwiches I've had yet! I tried the combination pork and it was amazing and stuffed with delicious-ness. Juicy pork, crunchy bread that doesn't scrape the roof of your mouth, delicately pickled carrots. All the makings of a perfect banh mi. I also ordered a Vietnamese coffee and it was my first time trying it. I like that it's made authentically here but it was a little on the bitter side for me. We just moved to the area and are trying all the restaurants in the cute downtown South City neighborhood. Really wanted to like this place and was very excited. Here's the good and the bad of it...really tried to be fair, even though we didn't know what to expect. We spent $90 and got five things. 1) Imperial rolls: A MUST - our favorite item 2) Crunchy nem rolls: Avoid - didn't care for these. Didn't contain some of the ingredients advertised and felt like they were made the night before 3) lemon grass beef rice plate: Wasn't what we expected. We thought we were getting bbq'd lemongrass beef and I think this was cooked and then put in a crockpot or something. This is only based on the lotus salad. I have not tried the other food choices. The atmosphere of this place is awesome. The vegetables were all fresh. I chose to substitute fried tofu instead of shrimp on the salad. The tofu was strange...fried crunchy but with no seasonings and with a different texture than I've ever had (tofu is a staple in my life). The salad was huge and comprised of at least two cups of pickled lotus roots, celery sliced on the bias, cucumbers, mint, onions, a few shreds of carrots, a few peanuts, and sesame seeds. The dressing was very light and sweet. Just to start, I'm not sure who can eat two cups of pickled lotus root in one sitting but it turns out it wasn't me. I enjoyed the other veggies but would have liked maybe a bed of cabbage, more shredded carrots, definitely more peanuts, and tofu with a sauce or some type of seasoning. Who wants plain, dry, tasteless tofu on a salad? It did have fried shallots on top that were delicious. The dressing was pretty good. Overall, the salad was disappointing but it did have potential. The Vietnamese are masters at salads. It is a shame this didn't meet that standard. Last point...it came in a plastic container and a plastic bag. For that, I won't get take out from here again.
