I would definitely agree with another reviewer that referred to Pico & Guac/ Butter & Jam as "Hidden Gems!" My husband & I happened into Butter & Jam this past Sunday and left thrilled by every aspect of this find! I ordered the Brioche French Toast which was outstanding. My husband had an omelet with spinach & goat cheese that he thought was excellent. There were other choices that would entice us to return. Sooooo return we did - but this time - to give Pico & Guac a chance! Again, we really loved it! Being from Texas originally, I am pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food, and I would highly recommend. Everything we had was delicious! The decor is very contemporary with an open and upbeat vibe. The service was also exceptional. Butter and Jam is an awesome place if you're looking for brunch and good vibes. While I don't think they explicitly highlighted vegan options, several menu items were easily adjustable to fit a vegan diet. My boyfriend and I walked into this establishment to enjoy breakfast on our day off. We never get to go out because our jobs are so demanding but today we had the opportunity because we are both off, which is rare. We called ahead to assure a table for two might be available if we just walked in this morning without a reservation, the staff member quickly said yes come on in, and so we did. Upon arrival we were offered whichever table we wanted, given water, but nobody returned to our table after fifteen minutes of us sitting. A table of four walked in and were immediately greeted, seated, and offered more than just water, then brought cups of fresh orange juice and even asked if they were ready to order, seated directly beside our bare table - BY THE SAME WAITRESS THAT SEATED US AT OUR TABLE FOR TWO! I am an African American woman, and that was the ONLY difference between our table and every other table in this small restaurant which was not even busy at the time we were seated. Every other table had a variety of drinks and a variety of foods already on the tables when we were seated, and yet, we were completely ignored from the moment we sat down to the moment we chose to leave without ordering because we could tell that we were not going to be served as the other tables were. I will never return to this establishment which is right down the street from my apartment here in Madison. I have lived here for one year and on the first day my conservative Caucasian boyfriend and I have time to have a nice sit down breakfast together this place has ruined our holiday weekend with their negligence. We were not dressed any differently from anyone else in the restaurant, we were kind to the staff when entering the restaurant. I've been to Butter & Jam twice. The first experience was lovely. We sat at the counter where the service was friendly and prompt. Our food was delicious. Our next visit was with friends--and it was an absolute disaster. We had a reservation for 4 at 11:45 on a Saturday morning. We arrived on time but were not seated for a full 40 minutes. We then waited another 10 minutes for a server to come to the table. It took an eternity for the food to arrive and when it finally came out, half the table was served and then the rest of us had to wait about ten minutes for our plates. One of the orders was entirely wrong and that member of our party didn't get their meal until well after the rest of us had finished eating. The staff seemed flustered, confused, and totally overwhelmed. While our food was decent, it absolutely did not make up for the rest of the experience. If we come back, it'll be on a weekday morning. Went for brunch Food didn't arrive for 45 minutes. Appetizers arrived with the food. Two of the dishes were cold. Forgot to bring coffee and a side of bacon. Brought the wrong bread with two of the breakfasts. Food itself was fine but nothing great. Manager didn't seem to care about that issues, comped two things, and sent us on our way. Had very high hopes for this place and it's a beautifully appointed spot but the food is drastically over priced and nothing special to warrant such crazy pricing. ~ $14 for avocado toast and it's not even a hardy amount of avocado? ~ $12 for 2 eggs? ~ $4 for coffee because "free refills"? Give me a break. Pastries taste often passed their prime even though owner says they are fresh daily. Crumb cake is quite awesome as owner says made by mother in law. It's delicious, yet overly sweet... but is that even sanitary/legal being made in someone's home and brought to restaurant? Maybe, who knows? The wait staff is very pleasant and seems to try their best. Feel sorry for them. If prices were more reasonable it would be 3-3 1/2 stars as it's average food that can be had most anywhere for less. Went to this place for lunch with a friend yesterday and we were so disappointed! The restaurant itself it hard to find (google maps shows it's on Main Street but it's actually behind off of a large parking lot). Everything we ate from the coffee to the entrées were horrible. I got an iced cappuccino and the ricotta and strawberry toast. The ricotta was flavorless, the toast itself was underwhelming and nothing special, and the jam was not fresh - the strawberries were clearly preserved or canned. I took two bites and left the rest. The coffee itself was tasteless too. The staff was nice but clearly don't have expertise in serving - they kept mixing our orders up and giving us the wrong food. Went for brunch on a Sunday. Over priced for not so good pancakes. The lemon pancakes with ricotta were dry and the ricotta was spread on top of pancakes which also was dry. On the bottom of syrup cup was a blob of ketchup. It was gross! And the sever from the kitchen had dirty fingernails. Floor was dirty too. Waited 20 minutes for waitress who took our order to give us check. Would have been longer if we didn't call her over. Manager comped the pancake order. Big deal! Never again! read more

Have visited Butter and Jam twice now.First time was for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the salad and club sandwich. They are definitely kicking it up a notch or two from everything else in the area! Great coffee, large and clean space and lots of parking. Service is very friendly but think they need to a few more hires because everything takes a while (a while to get your order in, food to come and check to come). I really want to give more stars but the food isn't that great - their pastry board tastes stale (croissants, muffins and biscuits). At least warm it up to try to make it less stale and grocery-store like. They also hype up their butters but we simply weren't impressed. After 45 mins of being ignored, we decided to leave. Owner was apologetic. Stopped in here with my husband and 2 children. Entire staff was welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food was nothing short of amazing. We ordered cappuccinos, yogurt parfait, butter and jam board with biscuits and muffins, and wings. All were excellent. Great new restaurant! Have ordered takeout several times and each time has been delicious! Fresh ingredients make the tuna nicoise salad and the cobb salad both winners!The crumb cake and chocolate cake were as well! Large portion size too! Pretty good, but very pricey. I had the Caramalized French Toast ($14) which was good sized and hot, but my friend had the Eggs Benedict ($18) which was very small and cold. The food is expensive and nothing special. I had the wild mushroom scramble with a salad and toast. It comes with butter, you have to pay $3 extra if you want jam for your toast....ridiculous. The salad had oil on it and that's it; tasteless. I noticed a lot of unfinished ones left behind by other diners. That should have been my clue.
