I went to order my food and after multiple attempts to grab someone's attention, the male employee with somewhat long brow hair was too busy on his phone to help me. After tirelessly attempting I was going to walk out. Eventually they looked up and i had requested a manager instead of the employee who had no intention of helping me in the first place. God, is there anything better than Mexican food? Alright, alright, so sometimes it sends you to the bathroom (well, 99% of the time), just think about the combination: Meat, Rice, Beans, Guacamole, Sour Cream, etc. Whoever came up with this combination deserves a gold medal- screw the Olympics. A friend told me about this place. She said it serves up some of the best Mexican food she's ever had. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but it was pretty damn good. I decided to go with a safe pick, and I ordered a Chicken Burrito. So what makes this place so good is... it was all about the marinade... I don't know what they used, but the taste was out of this world. It was a pretty big burrito, I didn't think I would finish it all. That marinade is seriously addictive. My friend had the Chicken Quesadilla, and I had a couple of bites of that as well. See, quesadillas are a tricky thing. Most places dry them out, but Cactus Cafe, magically managed to keep them mouth-watering, and moist. And, the place is ridiculously cute. I love the colorful chairs and tables. Plus, if you're a beer drinker like me, they have these awesome bottle openers attached to each table, so you're always in reach of an ice cold brewski. Meh...That about sums up my feelings towards Cactus. It's not that their food is bad, it's that it's neutral in about every way. I've tried Cactus on a number of occasions, from nachos and burritos to tacos and empanadas; my feelings are the same each and every time. The key ingredients are there but that's about it, just there. The dishes lack flavor and inspiration, they simply exist on the plate. Maybe it's that I've had Mexican and Tex-Mex throughout the South and my judgment is skewed but I can't help but notice something was off every time I tried something there. As far as the service and environment go I can't complain. They staff has always been friendly and prompt. The restaurant itself is inviting and clean, simply decorated but definitely that Tex-Mex feel. Maybe I'll wait a few months and try again. Depending sometimes on the day or time of day. You will either have great food or a few times the best word I can think of is YUCK!!! But generally the food is good. And we have had at least half the menu. I do recommend you door dash your food and pick it up yourself. The order is never wrong. I've ordered from this place a few Times over the last year and it's 50/50 what's going to happen. I'm vegan and allergic to dairy and always specify a bean burrito and no dairy. The person on the phone always double checks the order back to me and yet I still get a burrito sent to me with either cheese, sour cream, or meat on it. I didn't wanna write a bad review but this time there was sour cream hidden in the middle of the burrito and by the time I realized I had eaten most of it. I had to leave work early because I became quite ill from eating it. The people are nice but they can't get anything right. People specify things for a reason I'm not being a jerk I'm allergic. I have never had to drop a rating before (0_o) It's been a while since I have been able to take the time out of my day and venture to Cactus Cafe. My friend and I decided to go here for lunch. We love'd coming to this place because the food was delicious, and only $8 for a large burrito wasn't to shabby. Needless to say, I was slightly disappointed this time around. 1) I remember the burrito's being much larger then they seemed to be now. Its either that, or the last few burrito places I've been to result in a huge burrito I pay nothing for and I'm just not used to the "normal" size anymore. 2) The Potato Cheddar Jalapeno soup... What happened to it?! It used to taste more potato based (thicker) Then what this soup has become now ... Now it was like sour tasting and barely enjoyable, I ended up throwing it all out. Very disappointed. The soup was always my favorite too. However... the Queso dipping cheese I can tell was altered a tad bit from last visit I've had, and that was quite enjoyable. Can't put my finger on it, but it was delicious. Its good to see they are still pulling through with the whole rewards program. $5 burritos after 10pm is a nice little treat to know as well. I've been going to cactus cafe for years, and I regularly order delivery to my job. My favorite dish on their menu is the vegetarian chili. I came in today for lunch and was so upset to see that it's been taken off the menu. Even the cashier was upset that it was taken off! The vegetarian chili was really what set cactus cafe apart from other Tex mex places for me. I really hope the owners or management consider putting it back on the menu. I would give 5 stars but now that my favorite dish was taken off the menu, I don't see a reason to. The first time I ate here I would have given it five stars. However, its the inconsistency of the food provided that has me change my stance. I love the chorizo and chicken tacos. The burritos are some of the best you will get. The grilled food such as the bbq ribs aren't even tasty and some of the stuff on the menu such as the steak tacos are something to make my stomach turn. I was in the mood for tacos and didn't feel like dealing with the traffic in Port Jeff to get Salsa Salsa. So I called this place to order some food. First off, I was put on hold for 10 minutes. I hung up and called again, and was put on hold for another 5 minutes. I really wanted tacos, otherwise I would have given up. I ordered for myself and my bf, and we got a fish taco, shrimp taco, and a beef taco. The shrimp taco had some sort of tomato sauce on it. The shrimp itself was tasty, the taco otherwise wasn't great. I also ordered Arroz con Pollo. That was a huge amount of food for $8, and I have enough for 2 lunches this week, and it was quite tasty. All in all, I will go again to try the burritos, and to get the Arroz con Pollo. But the tacos I was very disappointed in. Love this place. We come here weekly and there are a bunch of meals that we cycle through. The beef enchilada, chicken corn chowder, Santa Fe salad with BBQ chicken, the rotisserie chicken, it's all amazing. Not a huuuge fan of their tacos but everything else is fantastic. While they make a good burrito and rice and beans and all that jazz, the real reason I love this place is the Peruvian rotisserie chicken and the yellow pepper sauce.
