I get take out every once in a while here. Food is good, depending on what you get. I do love their deals which you sign up to receive on your phone. 1/2 chicken deals are great, Mexican rice, black beans, wings, ribs are all tasty here. I recently had a side of mixed veggies and I was pleasantly surprised...real veggies and not just green ones. Was very tasty. My kids like the burritos. A couple of things I've had in the past I did not care for but I have my favorites. I wish they had fried shrimp but I guess that's not tex-mex. Overall nice place and staff is friendly. Mixed feelings about this place. The food is undoubtedly good here, and feels like authentic mexican, but there are some drawbacks. First off, the price. It's a lot more expensive than similar places, though you do get what you pay for for the most part, and I could likely overlook that one aspect of this location given the high quality of the food. However, there is also the fact that the portion sizes are a little on the small side, which is also a bit detrimental. I like cactus cafe! Occasionally I'll get a rogue piece of chicken in my vegetarian enchilada which I'm not...crazy about, but that's only happened on a few rare occasions. The staff is okay, not particularly friendly, not outwardly rude, it's whatever. I have heard from multiple friends who have eaten the steak here that it made them sick as hell, so maybe keep that in mind, I mean it's hit or miss. LOOVEEEE Cactus!! Their corn chicken chowder is amazing!! My BF & I eat it allll the time! Literally our FAVORITE SOUP EVERRRRR!!! It's super flavorful with a little kick of spice & because it's freshly made, it sometimes might be a little more or less spicy then others but always hits the spot! All the food is really good in my opinion. House salad, tacos, quesadillas all good. Although burritos arent my thing, i do like the garden one birthday style [which is no wrap in a dish, so technically not a burrito lol] My Bf gets burritos all the time, they're not my thing but they are good, i just personally feel like they need to have a sauce in them but maybe thats not a burrito thing? Either way give them a few trys & try different different things. Its all personal preference but if you like tex-mex you'll definitely enjoy Cactus! My visit to this place was not what I expected from a Mexican place. Defently the taste of their meat is mexican but the ammount is not that great. How much they charge for the food I was provided didn't really stisfied me at all. The looks of the place is not great either, I felt like I was in a getto mexican neighborhood in the 70's or 80's. The only think appealing about the place was the blonde cashier that look like a model that was in fitness. The food presentation is more like a fastfood place wich for the price is not what I expected, and the costumer service is more like order and sit down please I don't want to deal with you. The good side is that the taste is not really bad and on full moon days after sunset they have $1 tacos. First: I agree with reviewer Nicole C. Im Colombian/Puerto Rican and love spanish food. My boyfriend and I figure we give this place a try even tho Im not much of a Tex-Mex person... We walk in at 7:00pm. I notice one family waiting for their food. We thought it would be quick--the place was dead. We place our order at 7:04pm. We were told our food will be ready in 10 minutes. We waited about 35 minutes until our food was done. They only had one cook, who took his time.. Our food wasn't started until the family before us got theirs and it was almost 7:20. Anyways, I've been to other places that serve the same kind of food and this type of food is done quick. Its a fast food type joint. It wasn't even platters of food! They were just tacos!! It seems like they didn't have anything prepped out food wise because i heard him chopping away at the vegetables. I'm guessing this is why it was so slow. After we got our food we didn't even get an apology for the long wait. We hustled out of their with our stomachs hurting from hunger. Not returning. FOOD: Chicken Taco, Carne Asada, Smoked Pork Meat tasted bland. It was slopped with a thick cold sauce on top. Meat was in huge chunks. Smoked Pork was weird--it was bbq smoked with a pico de gallo taste that threw me off. Nachos are fried thats a Plus! The topping was guacamole, sour cream and creamy refried beans. Too much beans. When I first heard of cactus cafe I thought it would be like Taco Bell and not have any original taste. My step father is Mexican I know Tex-Mex believe me. Walking into this place I felt welcomed. The chef and workers were all very courteous. The food was made with real ingredients and had multiple flavors making certain items sweet and spicy for example. There's one burrito that is my favorite; which is the pulled pork burrito. There is pulled pork, black beans, white rice, cilantro, sour cream, BBQ sauce. It is a large packed burrito and you'll feel full and satisfied after enjoying it. This restaurant isn't expensive and the food is flavorful, real, and enticing. Adorably decorated Tex-mex cafe with an extensive menu. I ordered the shrimp and brisket burritos at 9.50 each. Absolutely horrible, filled with white rice and a few pieces of shrimp. Just discovered this place. Had Mexican food while there, took out ribs for dinner. All delicious and portions are generous. Best food value I know of on Long Island! Staff could not have been nicer. The atmosphere is really cute, and the staff was friendly...BUT I ultimately go to restaurant for the food, and the food was not good. I ordered chips with guacamole and a salad, and I sampled everything my family had as well. Nothing wowed me. I love fresh guacamole, and there's no way this guac was home made or fresh, no way, it had that shiny smooth consistency that screams fake. The salad was super generic and something you'd find at a crappy diner, not a fresh thing on that plate. Nothing else that I sampled really had any flavor (shrimp enchilada, beef enchilada, chicken burrito & quesadilla). I'm really not sure how this place has 4 stars, I really wanted to like it. This is my updated review. As the food stays consistent during LUNCH, when you get into dinnertime, the quality of the food and presentation seems to go downhill. We ordered a kids Quesadilla that looked extremely skimpy with barely any fries at all. For 5 bucks, you've gotta make a better effort because at this point, we won't look to order again for my kids. Also, we ordered a half BBQ chicken with sides. Barely any BBQ sauce on the chicken as compared to lunch staff, fries were soggy and not even close to as fresh as lunch staff makes, the side of vegetables were dry and not cooked to perfection like the lunch staff makes, the Jalapeno Cheddar soup was the same, although almost too spicy to enjoy. The jalapeno cornbread...eh, kinda dry compared to the lunch staff. We go here all the time so we know the difference. I'm considering halting my dnner visits here because the quality just isn't the same. Service is always decent and friendly. I hope they take note of this issue. read more

I think the difference I noticed most was the crisp cilantro taste that Cactus Cafe did not have and the smaller portion size also. But is highly recommend it. We eat their at least once a week, and food is a little spicy. But really good. Get a t- shirt and get a discount. I was impressed with cactus cafe. Me and my boyfriend driving in the area decided to check yelp for a Tex - Mex. Now, we were expecting this place to be like the green cactus mainly in long Island but cactus cafe is 5 times better. It's reasonable and fresh. Some say it's a long wait but I don't mind if the food is fresh. The chicken burrito lunch combo was good also comes with a salad and a drink. My boyfriend had the shrimp burrito which he loved. I think the other reviewers were overly harsh, you can get a good meal here. The tacos are cheap but the fish had a questionable saucey on it IMHO. I deducted a star bc their tortilla chips are always too greasy and their staff is very young and depending on when u go their you may wait extra long while they chat eachother up instead of rushing to help customers, they are friendly, but just slow. Cactus Cafe is a decent place. I have been here a handful of times and it hasn't really overly impressed me as much as I had hoped it would. Sometimes it seems like the food is missing something and I can't put my finger on what it is. There is an interesting variety, and it by far isn't a bad place. Just seems at times its missing something. I have to try some more items. I did however one time get a BBQ beef burrito that sounded risky but was very good. The decor is fabulously designed for a little tex mex cafe. The meals are good and my favorite are the fish tacos. My biggest complaint is that they dont listen to you. Great guac! Burritos could be bigger for the price. Visited twice for the veggie burrito and they were great both times. Very fresh!
