Cafe Intermezzo at Avalon is a gem! The mussels and baguette are divine. The Caesars salad with grilled salmon was exceptional and perfectly prepared. They are very generous with the ingredients in the salad. The tomato and Basil pasta dish was perfection. My husband had the French dip sandwich and he loved it. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant that is on par or exceeds the finest restaurants in Charleston SC., which is usually where we travel six hours to the coast for food of this exceptional quality. I highly recommend that you visit on less busy days ( we went on a Tuesday at 5 pm) or place a take out order if you are not able to obtain a table as they do not accept reservations and the tables are in high demand during peak hours. read more

I am obsessed with the atmosphere here. It's so trendy, but also perfectly fits in with the nicer Avalon area. I've truly never had a bad experience here. I would definitely recommend this as a fun date spot or a cute place to eat with your girls, even if you just pop in for dessert and coffee. The chicken florentine crepe is literally OUT OF THIS WORLD. I love their hot chocolate and desserts as well. Everytime I have been to Café Intermezzo, it's been for desserts and coffee. Compared to the one in Midtown (multiple years ago), the so-called cake "expert" wasn't that helpful. We didn't get the full explanation of all the options and were just expected and rushed to pick a cake flavor. Also, we were standing by the cakes for quite a while before we were helped. Well, we were assumed to be part of another couple (even though neither couple talked to each other and were standing apart) who just ordered one slice of cake and went back to their table. We just ended up standing awkwardly by the cakes before we were acknowledged. As the variety of the cakes weren't that diverse on the day we came, we had to settle for a double-chocolate with butterscotch cream. It was rich in chocolate and not too sweet, but I came in with a craving for a cake with some fruit. Oh well. At least the lattes were good. read more

We saw many vacant tables outside and had no idea that we would have to wait to be seated so we sat down at one of the tables. Immediately someone from the staff ran there saying we have to leave as those tables are for people on the waitlist. She was very rude and didn't say where we should be waiting. Eventually we went into the cafe where a lady said we would have to wait about 30-40 minutes to get seated--although there were MANY empty tables outside. We were basically turned away even though they would have had the capacity to offer us a table. When I was in graduate school at Georgia Tech, I actually sort of enjoyed Cafe Intermezzo's devil-may-care attitude toward its customers. But now that I'm older, I guess I expect just a bit more courtesy, or at least not rudeness. My wife and I were outside enjoying a beautiful day when she suggested I get a couple Irish Coffees, like we used to do at Cafe Intermezzo between Buckhead and Midtown. When the bartender finally came over to greet me, it wasn't actually a greeting. "Are you dining in?" I responded, "No, I'm not." She just stared at me and raised her eyebrows, "Well?" I couldn't tell if she was upset at me for some reason. Because I was seated at the bar, I assumed I was allowed to take off my mask. So I said, "I'd just like two Irish coffees to go please." She immediately asked, "Do you have two IDs for those two Irish Coffees?" So, I responded, "Uh, no. I only have one." So she said, "Well, I can't give you two Irish coffees without two IDs." She turned on her heel. And I left, befuddled. I understand the need for rules, but if you have to give someone news that they're not going to enjoy (like an ID rule (that I've never experienced at Cafe Intermezzo) or that I need to have a mask on at the bar), there's just no need to be rude about it (especially in the service industry, where I worked for many years). More to the point, when I was in grad school 25 years ago, this was more understandable. But now that I'm in my 50s, did she really think I was trying to buy an Irish coffee for my teenagers? For Pete's sake. We really like Avalon, and go there often, in part because of the large selection of restaurants. We'll be patronizing the others from now on. read more

I came here a second time in hopes of trying the desert that everyone raves about. We went up to the counter to have the staff tell us all of the cakes. They were very helpful in describing all the good looking cakes they have. I decided on the oreo cheesecake and was shocked when I got the bill for a $9 slice of cake. Being so expensive, I was let down by the cheesecake itself. It wasn't creamy as I hoped it would be and wasn't anything out of the ordinary. I've never seen such a long coffee menu. The coffee seemed to be a bit pricier, having paid close to $5 for a cafe latte and $6 for a vanilla latte. But they both tasted good. The original cheesecake was also really good. I don't know what type of whip cream they used, but the cheesecake was sweeter than the cream, which is usually not the case. I don't like whip cream and never eat it, but this one was a good balance with the cake, not that the cake needed the balance. read more

Always enjoy my experience at Cafe Intermezzo, both at the Dunwoody and the Alpharetta location. This specific location is smaller than the Dunwoody location, which is massive in comparison. This location is extremely homely and cozy, built and situated in the middle of Avalon Plaza, it is overlooked by apartment buildings and flanked by streets on both sides. I ordered a lemonade as it was a bit late and I did not want to harm my ability to naturally fall asleep. The lemonade is very good, could use a bit more ice to provide a more refreshing feel. This is a six star cafe... It excels in every area possible, as do all other Intermezzo locations. They need to open a place in Greenville SC which is a great friendly, food city that would welcome this place with open wallets. We simply stopped in for couple of iced coffees on a hot day. Excellent atmosphere, superb service, they have enough great desserts to simply knock your shoes off. Their list of adult beverages is impressive. They actually have what I would call a detailed "brochure" on drinks that goes into detail on many liquors and liqueurs. It's worth reading through. Not being a morning drinker... I opted for simple iced coffee. They excel in making coffee. Perfection. If you haven't tried the place or it's sister locations, it's in my onion, a must if you are in Atlanta. They do breakfast all day. Excellent sandwiches, soups, salads, crepes, as well as some serious tortellini, pasta, trout, etc. dishes. They can make coffee as well as the best of them, and if you enjoy a mixed drink or a straight liquor or liqueur - they have a great selection. I've been to the Sandy Springs location and my dining experience there has always been good, but my dining visit here blew that and many other dining experiences I've had in the past, out of the water! Not only are the selections at cafe intermezzo wonderful per usual, but everyone who worked there during my visit was so kind, accommodating, and welcoming! The dining staff and management took care of my dining party's needs to move from one table to another so we could be outside and our drinks were delicious as always! The service they provided just in checking in with us consistently and genuinely, to ensure we were set and had everything we needed, was above and beyond. The service here is what I'd expect from a 5 star restaurant and it was such a pleasure to have such a fine array of drink and food options and feel cared about during my dining experience. Located in the middle of Avalon. Street parking is available but you have to download an app to pay. There are also multiple parking decks with free parking. Stopped by on a Friday night. Luckily it wasn't too busy so the wait was only 30 min. It would be much more convenient if they could take your number and text/call, but you have to stay close by to listen for your name. The interior is beautifully decorated and tables were spaced enough to not feel too crowded. We were seated in a little nook by the back door. I liked that it felt secluded but it was a little on the dark side. They leave a red/green card when you're seated so you can let them know visually when you are ready to order. Loved this because I hate feeling rushed to order. The menu is available by scanning a QR code in the middle of the table and a small candle and flower add a nice intimate ambiance. I got the Baked Brie ($12.50) with honey, figs, almonds, ancho raspberry (not sure this was added) and baguette. It was delicious. However, my one complaint would be that there was a big hole down the middle of the baguette and it was not sliced all the way through so I had to butcher the slices with my butter knife ending with deformed slices which was hard to spread the brie on. Still very tasty so it was worth the struggle lol. My date got French Dip ($14) with roasted potatoes and a side of ketchup. The ketchup wasn't necessary at all because the potatoes were seasoned to perfection. I didn't taste the sandwich but they were very generous with the roast beef and it smelled delicious. Service was great! Our server brought refills whenever she noticed that our glasses were almost empty and she made sure to stop by for last call in case we wanted to order anything else. read more

We went to Cafe Intermezzo at Avalon just for coffee and cake and really enjoyed our short experience! We sat in an area that was covered but partially exposed to the outdoors with big open gaps in the glass wall that made us feel safer than indoor dining. There were also heaters in these gaps that kept us nice and warm when it was a little chilly outside. We got a large classic latte ($7.50) and a slice of carrot torte ($9.50). While it was an expensive dessert, the torte was delicious and paired wonderfully with the latte. We hadn't been at Cafe Intermezzo for a couple years, so we decided to pop in and grab some dessert after dinner last night (12/28/23). Walked in and a surly young lady asked if we were going to dine in or carry out. When we replied carry out, she looked down at the other end, told us there were people there already, instructed us to wait at the red rope. I took a couple steps into the restaurant looking for a red rope, turned and asked where it was. She told me it was outside, as if I was the stupidest person on the planet. I chuckled, telling her I misunderstood and again got the look like I was an idiot. After waiting outside in the frigid cold for about 15 minutes, we decided to just leave. I realize our $40-50 dessert order won't be missed, but I was terribly disappointed with the customer service. I was a long time fan of Café Intermezzo. I frequented the Atlanta and Dunwoody locations. I never dined at the Avalon location until yesterday. While shopping, we decided to stop and get something to eat. Upon reaching the hostess stand, we were told the wait was an hour. Though that seemed excessive given the number of visibly vacant tables, we put our name on the list. We got a text in about 45 minutes that a table was ready. It was downhill from there. The waitress was unfriendly and spent little time at our table but didn't seem to have any issues assisting the three tables around us. She brought us water after about 5 mins of being seated. One of the waters spilled and she didn't wipe it up. We asked for napkins that she didn't bring. I had to get up and ask the bartender for napkins to wipe up the table. It took 35 minutes to bring our "hot" chocolates. She finally took our order. We ordered simple meals from the menu. There were no additional requests to the liated items. Another 20 minutes or so went by before only 2 of the three meals came to the table. Both were cold. About 5 minutes later the third meal came out. That meal was delivered by who appeared to be a manager. It's unclear why the waitress didn't deliver it. We didn't see the waitress again until it was time for the bill. During this time I witnessed her checking on several tables around us. Im curious why we received such disparate treatment as compared to other diners. I have never had such a disappointing experience at any restaurant- and not at the other Cafe Intermezzos I've visited. The staff at the Avalon location need more/better training. This experience gives me pause in visiting the other locations again. read more

We go so often to this restaurant. Last time we had a very bad experience. The crepe with Nutella and strawberry my son usually ask, was dry and cold and barely had strawberry and Nutella. The coffee my husband ordered was watery and cold. We sit outside at night and the heater was off because according with the waiter they were out of fuel. Not a place to go for dinner. This cute little bistro might be nice for coffee, drinks and dessert but the should pull dinners off their menus. Their tables and chairs are incredibly tiny and not particularly comfortable to sit in. The waitstaff is incompetent. The waitress never told us her name, when asked if their were any specials she said "I don't know. I don't think so" and never asked anyone. The drink menu specifically says there is a soup of the day and martini of the month. I may have been interested in one of those if given that information. I ordered the dinner sized mussels and received 20 mussels, 3 of which were not opened which meant I could not eat them. I almost thought it was the appetizer portion, it wasn't. It was topped with what could only be described as a can of crushed tomatoes. It was completely bland and lacked any kind of broth. It was served with a few pieces of stale baguette.The crab crepe that my companion ordered was incredibly heavy and lacked any flavor except cream. It left a greasy taste in my mouth when I had a bite. He offered me more but It was so rich I couldn't eat another bite. They asked if we wanted desserts but all I wanted to do was leave. I was going to give them 1 star but I can imagine this place might be nice after a movie for coffee and desserts. It's just not nice for dinner. read more
