You can also order the prix fixe menu at the bar as well. The bar tender Ross deserves a paragraph all on his own. In 16yrs of writing Yelp reviews I have never ever mentioned a bartender. Ross is what every bartender should aspire to be. He educates without being snooty. He's there when you want him, and he's minding his own business when you don't. He's actually VERY very good at crafting drinks and I ordered two that weren't even on the menu because he suggested them! I even got a fancy branded ice cube! Service 10/10, he is a vibe. Paul was our server and matched the energy, the two of them are the A-team. I wanted to celebrate my partner's milestone birthday at this restaurant and was initially excited to book their private dining room. After confirming that I wished to move forward with the reservation and providing details regarding dietary restrictions, allergies, and menu questions, communication came to a complete standstill. My attempts to finalize the reservation went unanswered. When I eventually called to follow up, the host forgot to place me on hold while speaking with the GM, allowing me to overhear comments and discussions that should never have occurred within earshot of a guest. The tone was dismissive, unprofessional, and left me with the clear impression that my business was an inconvenience rather than something they valued. A simple acknowledgment or timely response would have gone a long way. Instead, I was left feeling that both my business--and the business I have referred over the years--meant very little to them. What makes this especially disappointing is that I work in the aviation/travel space and have recommended this restaurant to hundreds of clients over the years. Hospitality is at the core of any successful restaurant, and unfortunately, this experience reflected a troubling lack of it. For a restaurant that has recently undergone a rebrand, I would have expected a renewed commitment to guest experience and professionalism. Instead, I encountered the opposite. There was 1 pretty big miss but will save that for the end... The service is spot on. From making the reservation to the end of our meal. Everyone is so pleasant and just plain nice. This was our Christmas Dinner...the weekend of the Kona Storm. We had an out of our reservation if we wanted (typically charge $25/head for late cancellation)...but we wanted in. Weather wasn't too bad at that time anyways. Had me, hubs, baby...4 gfs and 1 high school boy. Long table. Nice and comfy. We sat on an end and baby played musical chairs and had us switching. Table shared: - Bread and Butter - was softy and pillowy but little oily. Baby ate a few pieces! - Escargot - good, but few of them thought too salty - Bone marrow - tiny cow. But other than that was delish. The cheek was salty, but yummy. - Charred cabbage - the Senia one. Good, but for some reason I remember it being different. I wasn't as excited about it this time but I don't know why. Not enough sauce maybe? Friend got the caviar brioche. Can't go wrong with caviar but she said the brioche was delish. Some go oyster, and someone got the caesar. We got the foie wihtout the maple. I didn't really care for the madeleines but the foie was soooo gooood. Baby ate most of the madeleines and even really liked the foie. On the table we had 2 prix fixe, tomahawk, sirloin and all the sides. Hubs, Baby and I shared: - Sirloin - cooked to the right temp and tasty - Spinach - yum The reason for the dropped stars...our mains and sides came out room temp...nothing was hot and tasting like it came right out of the oven/off the stove. It was weird. Like everything was sitting out the counter for a little whie. Steaks were cooked right, but room temp. Sides all room temp, except the spinach was warm. Fries were good tasting but room temp. 1 order fries was sent back but the rest of us were too hungry to send anything plus didn't want to be "those people." Surprised we just recently discovered Cafe Miro which recently revamped their menu to offer à la carte options. Love the simplistic and modern decor in the restaurant and especially love the background music they played throughout our meal. What drew us to try this restaurant was a post on IG of their ahi and uni brioche. Was a bit disappointed that they didn't list the caviar version on the menu but I guess previous diners knew to ask for it. We only noticed the table next to us having it but they did opt for the tasting menu which didn't seem to be an exorbitant amount of food (which we were afraid of). We started with both the ahi and uni brioche which were both amazing. Next time we will definitely add that one to the list of snacks. My wife loves escargots and it definitely hit the spot as it was both buttery and garlicky. Will have to admit Cafe Miro's version rivals the best in Paris and is better than what we have at Bouchon. I'll be honest, I had hoped to love the Kauai prawns but so far the prawns at Bavel take the grown. The prawns were fresh and decently sized but wasn't a fan of the flavor for some reason. We loved the charred cabbage which was a nice modern rendition of your typical Chinese chicken salad minus the chicken of course! For our main, we selected the seared scallops w/ dried scallop porridge. The scallops were perfectly seared and seasoned and the porridge complimented the scallops perfectly. The fries were also fried to the perfect golden brown and quite enjoyed Chef's "Cane" sauce. Needless to say we were pretty full but still had room for their chocolate Strauss milk soft serve which was good but we can get something similar back in LA. The star was definitely the banana mochi cake which was fantastic! I personally love banana bread and when you combine that with a mochi like bread ... OMFG!! Absolutely an awesome meal. Love the ease of ordering à la carte or prix fix...you have options! We went for a la carte and were totally satisfied. We started with 5 starters. Their amazing ahi brioche was so buttery and full of flavor. The chive madeleines with foie gras butter was a surprising combo of savory and slightly sweet. The beef tartare with egg yolk was served with potato chips. The bone marrow was so delicious with beef cheek marmalade on thicker toasts. Next the seared cabbage was delightful, topped with almonds, wontons, orange and a zesty vinaigrette. Are you getting the idea that the menu by Chef Chris is creative, inspired and delicious? You bet! Next we shared the burger and black cod. The burger was so good and shoestring fries so crispy...i would have gone for seconds. The black cod was good but not a stand out. The ribeye was great...perfectly medium rare, full of flavor. It paired well with the smashed potatoes and garlic spinach. Then came dessert...their banana mochi cake with soft serve ice cream. We came here for dinner with the intention of getting the Valentine's fix menu but decided to go for ala carte which I believe was the right choice. Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the uni brioche and my partner liked the bone marrow. The uni just melts in your mouth with the soft crunch of the brioche, well balanced flavors. The bone marrow was very flavorful and gelatinous, tasted like a nice beef stew. For drinks we enjoyed the zero-proofs and my favorite was the Powerpuff. It was refreshing and light. I would come here again for special occasions, prices are on the higher side, but food and service were great. I think the best thing Cafe Miro has done is to introduce an ala carte menu that features the greatest hits. We've gone back twice in 2 weeks and fully intend to keep coming back more frequently. Top of the list of must-haves are the brioche trio and the charred cabbage. Absolute must-haves. But hubby kept wanting to come back for the wagyu burger which is probably the best burger in Hawaii by far. It is so well-balanced, perfectly seasoned, and you can really taste the wagyu. I do still stand by my one teeny tiny critique that it could use a pickle spear on the side to make the whole dish sublime. The fries on the side are perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned, absolutely no complaints there and we always clean out the plate. The cocktails have definitely evolved and are very creative and delicious. Service, as usual, is excellent with extremely attentive staff that just exude happiness to be there. The ambiance is the same classy atmosphere you've come to expect. It's perfect for a date night or a family dinner. They are also super kid-friendly and have allowed us to order special dishes for the littles when we do the prix fixe menu. Tonight, they even made my 8-year-old a special non-alcoholic mixed drink to her liking! They really go above and beyond here and they never disappoint. I was expecting much more than what I received here. I ordered from the Ala carte menu, for pupus I ordered the beef tartare and bone marrow, and for my main course I ordered the ribeye with a side of the smashed potatoes. The tartare was lacking in any meaningful flavor, and was completely overpowered by the flavor of the potato chips it was served with. The bone marrow was delicious and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The ribeye was okay, but I've had better steaks at a chain steakhouse. The smashed potatoes were runny and more like a puree, which made me feel as though I was eating baby food. As for the ambiance of the restaurant, it is very loud and echoey making any conversation difficult, although the decor is very nice. Overall I most likely wouldn't return, or recommend this restaurant to anyone. I expected much more from other reviews, and left very disappointed. read more

Hurry! You only have a few days left to experience the casual elegance that is Cafe Miro. Choose to enjoy three courses, four courses, or order ala carte. We were gifted a cup of cold potato vichyssoise to start our meal. It was smooth with a touch of cream. If you love variety, the Appetizer Sampler is the way to go. It includes five petite starters including fresh Ahi, crab croquette, salmon roulade, Oyster Rockefeller, and deviled egg with prosciutto. My favorites were the crab croquette--lightly crisp on the outside, smooth and creamy inside--and the buttery and herbaceous Oyster Rockefeller. We also enjoyed the raw oysters with a touch of ponzu. For an entree, we all loved the fresh catch. The day we dined it was Opah in almond, browned butter. The fish was stunning. Served in a generous double fillet portion with veg and scalloped potato. I will miss it! For dessert we had the Dessert Sampler and Cheese Plate. The Chef Dessert was a chocolate-banana mouse, the gelato was coffee, and there was a mini creme brûlée. The Cheese Plate featured a brie, a cheddar and a gorgonzola with house made raisin bread and fruit. Service was gracious and friendly. Be aware they don't have all of their wines since they are winding down, but we still found some yummy things to drink. After over 22-years of service, Chef Kobayashi is retiring and Cafe Miro will close its doors on the 20th. Chef Chris Kajioka is slated to takeover the space and reopen with a similar concept. read more

So sad that Cafe Miro quietly closed it's door last weekend. But I was lucky enough to go the night before they closed to have it one last time. I love the lighter Japanese touch on French cuisine. I'll also miss much the set tasting menus that they have if you don't want to ala carte everything. Love the oysters there, the seafood salad and the rib eye with the Japanese ponzu oroshi. I only hope the new owners who will take it over as Miro Kaimiuki next year, continue some of the faves. read more

If you see my schedule, you would think i am insane since you will find back to back meetings all over the island, work outs, volunteering, charity events, church, etc but something that wont ever miss is scheduling time to eat good food! "You must chose, but chose wisely"- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Here it is- a week before your wedding anniversary and you are trying to decide where to take da wife to celebrate that special day. "Ok", she says, "any place is fine" but guys, you know what that means: screw up the selection and you'll never hear the end of it. There is nothing more depressing than hearing your wife say, "the dinner was so/so". I have been married long enough to know that, and I can tell you I'm not batting a thousand. After consulting Yelp (of course) and speaking with learned local chowhounds, I decided our dinner would be at Cafe Miro- a higher class restaurant without the pretentiousness, in da Kaimuki hood, with a price point that (while not cheap) will not break da bank. The offerings are framed around a three course prix fixe with multiple choices or a four course chef's special selections which is somewhat interchangeable anyway. Add the amuse-bouche and you really have a four or five course grouping for each. Confused? The servers (as has been noted by others) are very patient and will explain your options until you are comfortable with your understanding and ultimately your choices. Our evening started with glasses of complimentary champagne to celebrate our anniversary- a classy prelude. (Mahalos Cafe Miro!) This was followed by the amuse-bouche which was a delightful cup of vichyssoise to cleanse the palate. Our selections? Da wife chose a delicious seafood salad with an orange yuzu vinaigrette and included two prawns, squid, scallops and a mussel, a fresh mahimahi almondine entree and the chef's assorted dessert plate. I chose the fresh mozzarella with walnuts and prosciutto salad bathed in a tasty olive oil/ vinegar dressing, a small lobster tail appetizer, mini rack of lamb ( two pieces) and the assorted dessert plate. We split the lobster tail and exchanged mahimahi and lamb servings to have a true "surf n turf" for each of us. We really enjoyed the preparations and just as importantly, the pacing of the courses. They were quite attentive without being overbearing and this is with a restaurant that was almost completely full by the time we finished. We were served by the dynamic duo of Kelly and Ryan I. - a friendly pair that made it a memorable evening for us. Total time for our dinner, just a smidgin over two hours and we enjoyed every minute of it. Cafe Miro is definitely a worthy contender when looking for that special dining venue. Winding up our trip, we had our last dinner here. With the recent California ban on foie gras, I made a point to have this delicacy at least once while being here. With a fellow 'foie fan' arriving on Tuesday, that was the only available evening that we could meet for dinner. With the advent of the number of famous chef restaurants especially in Waikiki (Nobu's, Roy's, Morimoto's, etc.), this doesn't quite quality as a high-end, schmooze kind of place. There are a few parking spaces in their back lot or, if you time it right, you'll probably find parking along Waialae. If you're looking for a place to 'wow' out-of-towners, there aren't many bells and whistles here. But, if you're looking for a quiet, mellow dinner with above average food, this place is right for you. read more

I'm big on birthdays.. and will pretty much celebrate my birthday the whole week/weekend... what I like to call "birthday week." I had chosen to do a family dinner at Arancino's Kahala but couldn't decide where to go for my birthday dinner with my girlfriends. MW... and then I remembered wanting to try Cafe Miro since I have passed by that place so many times. Checked out the pricing online and thought it was pretty reasonable being that it's a fine dining restaurant. Cafe Miro is pretty easy to miss.. it doesn't really stand out when you're passing down Waialae. Most of my friends had no idea it was even there. Parking is in the back.. there isn't a lot available but there is also street parking. Upon entering, I was really pleased with the atmosphere. It looks a lot bigger than it does from the outside. I actually expected it to be a very tiny restaurant. It has a very romantic setting.. so a good place for date nights ;) Our server was very friendly and attentive. He explained to us how the menu work. There is a choice of doing a 3 course or 4 course and they are interchangeable so you can choose a dish from either side of the menu. I decided to do the 3 course menu because I wasn't extremely hungry. I chose to get the seafood salad, the steak with the red wine reduction and wasabi cream and the dessert platter. For my first course (seafood salad) I was surprised how big it was and how much seafood was in it. It almost could have been a meal on it's own! It had a good amount of shrimp, scallops, mussels and fish. Very yummy! The second course.. my rib eye steak was delish! I loved the sauce on it. It also came with a side of potato gratan and brussel sprouts (my fav). As for dessert, I love how you get an assortment of desserts. It came with 3... creme brulee, sorbet in a wafer type bowl and some kind of raspberry chocolate mousse cake? (Sorry forgot what the waiter told me). Little kept secret in Kaimuki on Waialae Ave. This restaurant serves mostly French cuisine and I was blown away by the fresh seafood and delicate sauces. The menu is a little confusing as they offer a prix fixe meal but you have the option of trading any dish with the ala carte menu. This restaurant aims to please and wants you to be a happy satisfied customer. They start you off with a complimentary bowl of vichyssoise. The rest of the meals were excellent. Everything we had at Cafe Miro was super delicious. Plus our server was amazing and they had a poke stop accessible from the window seat, so Cafe Miro was a win in many ways. This is kind of a late update, so I can't remember all the things we ordered, but please see attached pictures for reference. I know I really I loved my scallops, and that the cold potato soup was surprisingly delicious, and that every single dessert in our dessert platter was worth every single penny. Sure the place is pricey, especially if you splurge and go full course meals with extras added in, like we did. But if it's a special night (and it was for us, as it was my partner's b-day), it is a great place to celebrate and feel pampered. Great attentive staff, and wonderful delicious food! read more

The food was all quite excellent. I would have given more stars but service was slow. We were a party of 6 w/a baby and they put us in a back room (understandable but the baby w/us was very mellow). It took at least 10 minutes before anyone even approached our table and when a waiter did appear, he told us that they didn't have their stations assigned that night. ?!?! That being said, our waiter was a great guy and his friendliness made up for the initial delay. Even brought me an extra side of their yummy scalloped potatoes. Everyone enjoyed their meals - between us, we tried opah, steak, duck, and lamb. Dessert sampler was nice but we were surprised that there was nothing chocolate. Creme brulee was fantastic! Simply exquisite. My boyfriend and I have been eyeballing this place, as we live in Kaimuki, for a while now. After checking out their reviews, we had to stop in. We sat at the bar which was very elegant and romantic. They lit a candle for us and served us drinks and we were served promptly. The service was polite, sophisticated and friendly. It was old-fashioned fine-dining service in a casual setting. I felt absolutely pampered the entire experience. As we sat and waited for our food, we were given an amuse bouche of cold peach soup. It was an excellent palate cleanser and a delicate way to start the meal. We also received their house baked roll which was so scrumptious, I had to ask for another one. They tasted like a croissant! We both started with the appetizer sampler which was divine! There was a deviled egg with a cornichon wrapped in prosciutto, a broiled herb butter oyster (!), a shrimp gelee, a crab croquette and a piece of ahi carpaccio (!). The ahi was the best bite of the evening! From there, I ordered the scallop and my boyfriend had the foie gras with teriyaki rice. Both were incredibly outstanding. Chef Miro dropped them off to us personally. It was such a great touch. After dinner, I switched to a glass of Brut and we shared the cheese platter for dessert which featured blue cheese, Vermont cheddar and brie with various fruits, nuts and walnut raisin bread. I felt 100 percent satisfied. We loved the ambiance which was reminiscent of a fondue house at a ski lodge in the Alps. It felt homey and we adored the service and food. Take a glance at the menu and you might think this place isn't vegetarian friendly. However, they were more than willing to accommodate my pick-aterian needs. (I'm just picky.) I went with the 3 course option. My pre-appetizer was a deviled egg. Yum! My appetizer was the mushroom soup. Yum! My entree was a veggie pasta. Yum! By the time I got to my entree I really wasn't hungry anymore. So I was going to opt out of the desserts because it was either a plate filled with sweets or cheese. I've been wanting to go to Cafe Miro for years. I heard from friends how they enjoyed the food, and how great a value it was. I finally took my wife for our 20th Anniversary, and was not disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised how the restaurant was bigger than it appears from the outside, and how nice and comfortable the interior was. Miro is definitely an example of how outside appearances can be deceptive (in a good way). The staff are very welcoming, knowledgeable, attentive, and overall nice people. There were five different staff that provided us service, but were never intrusive. We struck up many nice conversations with the staff. They took the time to "talk story" when we asked questions, even though the place was busy. To help celebrate our anniversary, Miro provided us each with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. I was pleasantly surprised that they served a rose'. A sparkling rose' may not appeal to many, but I found that it complimented the food that we ordered. We both partook of the Chef's Special menu (Menu Plaisir) which includes an amuse bouche, two appetizers, an entree, and a dessert. The food was great. We also ordered the DR Loosen Bros Riesling and the BR Cohn Cab. Both went well with our food. The Loosen Bros was a little sweeter than anticipated, but it was good. The BR Cohn was a lighter Cab, which agreed with me, as I don't prefer the "chewier" spicy types. The amuse bouche was a chilled potato and fennel soup (vichyssoise). The soup was delicious, but was a little colder than I would have preferred. For my first appetizer I had the Appetizer Tasting Plate which included the Ahi Carpaccio, Salmon Roulade, Crab Croquette, Oyster Rockefeller, and Egg Farci. I thoroughly enjoyed most of appetizers, with the exception being the Salmon Roulade. I enjoyed the Roulade, but my palate tends to lean more towards ahi, crab and oysters. My wife ordered the Pan Fried Seafood Medley Salad Orange Yuzu Vinaigrette with Organic Fresh Salad. She stated that the seafood was cooked just right, but regretted that she didn't order the Tasting Plate, as she thought that the Tasting Plate featured "special" items. For our 2nd appetizer, we both ordered the Kona Abalone and Scallop with Mushroom Fond de Veau Sauce. The abalone was tender, but we both felt the scallop was the star of the dish. My wife and I are both fans of scallops, and the one that this dish featured (Hokkaido) was more flavorful than most we've had before. The scallop was also well seared, yet not overcooked, but done just right. For our entree's my wife had the Rib Eye Steak (Prime Grade) with Red Wine Sauce and Wasabi Cream, and I had the Roasted Rack of Lamb with Shiitake Mushroom and Mint Sauce. Both were served with sauteed vegetables and a potato gratin which was delicious. We both enjoyed our entrees. My only very minor negative comment would be that I was served two chops, and not a "rack" of lamb. However, with the abundance of food served, I wouldn't have been able to finish a full rack had I been served one. To finish our meal, we both opted for the assorted dessert plate. The plate included a banana raspberry mousse cake, blackberry sorbet, and Creme brulee'. I usually don't like mousse's, but did like the mousse cake. My wife initially didn't like the sorbet, but she said it grew on her, and she ended up enjoying it, eating the entire serving. I thought the sorbet was good and a very welcomed break from the heavier dishes served earlier. I found the creme brulee delicious. I'm very particular about creme brulee. Many chef's choose to add flavors such as coffee, coconut, mango, etc., however, I find that these added flavors drown out what I find to be perfection, the "plain" vanilla creme brulee. The standard that I hold other creme brulees up to, is the Burnt Cream that Kincaid's/Horatio's was famous for. Miro's was pretty close. Overall, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We noticed that most of the patrons were "older", and that there weren't too many recent posts on Yelp. I've found throughout the years that the more mature crowds often frequent establishments with great food, good value, and great service, but don't necessarily post on Yelp. This place is not one of the new trendy, flash in the pan, gone in six months type of establishments. Came here for a graduation party so they accommodated about 20 something of us. Not too sure how the normal restaurant is but we had a set menu which was pretty good. Just that the portions were small. Served good wine but a bad thing is that they allow you to bring your own wine in, but they charge a $30 corkage fee PER BOTTLE. So that's why instead of bringing our own drinks for the dinner, we just bought the bottles there. Since I was a guest at this party, I didn't have to pay so I am not too sure how pricey they are, but I will assume that they are pretty high priced. I'll say it is because of their sophisticated dishes. Even their restaurant has an upper class feel to it. They try to make it an authentic French restaurant. We went to Cafe Miro for a celebratory dinner and it was perfection! I would describe the decor and ambiance as casual French vs. fancy French. There's some cool artwork on the walls and they have a private room good for parties. We had a slightly difficult time finding parking on the street along Waialae, but it's free after 6pm in the metered stalls. Our servers were great at explaining the menu options. They have three course menus depending on how hungry you're feeling. I went with the 3 courses while my bf chose the 4 course (comes with a 2nd entree). The bread was warm, light, and crusty. Served with chilled butter squares it was hard to stop eating it. They serve an amuse bouche as well, which was a chilled soup with the most tantalizing potato flavor. I tried the chef's appetizer bites which were beautifully presented on a platter and surprisingly generous in portion! My favorites were the crab cake, which was a perfect crisp bite with delicious crab served on a tomato sauce. I also liked the seared ahi with a piece of avocado. The salmon roulade was ok, too fishy for my preference. The deviled egg was good and the chicken served over a potato salad. For my entree I had the hokkaido scallops which laid on top of wilted spinach and was bathing in the most lucious sauce. The four scallops were cooked perfectly with a slight sear and then tender and juicy on the inside. The sides it came with was like a potato gratin and a ratatouille. I thought the tomato base of the ratatouille didn't compliment the scallops but it was tasty on it's on. Lastly, for dessert I tried the chef's platter which came with a guava mousse (not bad), creme brûlée, and sorbet w/ fresh fruits. The sorbet was my absolute favorite thing! Kona coffee flavored and served in a yummy cookie cup. Overall, a memorable dinner with great food. They even gave free champagne, which was a lovely touch. We came here for a celebration bday dinner. I love this place - the ambience, the food, the service are all on point!!!! One thing about this place, they sure do make the bday person feel special. ;) Located on Kaimuki Blvd, is this tiny restaurant. I think if you blink you'll miss it. hahaha There are parking spaces behind the restaurant and in the evenings you can park in the bank's "reserved" parking spaces since the bank is closed. There's also street parking in front if you can find a space. I think that's more convenient than parking in the back of the restaurant. Also, you can exist from the back door (by the rest rooms) when you leave if you parked in back. They are only open for dinner (boooooo!!!! haha just kidding). Last seating is at 9pm but they let you take your time to enjoy dinner and you don't feel rushed to leave. The menu is pretty simple. You can order the 3 course or 4 course menu and you get to choose what courses you want. For a French restaurant, the portions are big - that makes me happy cause then I have leftovers to take home. First timer here...and I'm totally in love. Tucked in the heart of Kaimuki...if you blink you'd totally miss the place. Parking is a little tricky, because it's behind the building and it's very limited. Upon entering the restaurant, you're greeted with a friendly smile. The ambience is very friendly and not at all intimidating being a French restaurant. The food was awesome. The cold potato soup was very refreshing, the compliation of appetizers were delectable, abalone with scallops were devine, the beef tenderloin melted in your mouth and the dessert compliation were heavenly. OK, short and sweet this time. French with maybe a too subtle to call fusion Japanese touch but it definitely adds interest. Only our second time here but fortunately just as excellent in the quality, preparation and service delivery as our first experience. Probably the best restaurant in Kaimuki. Will definitely continue to visit every time we are on Oahu. A friend from another island was visiting town, so I let him pick our dinner destination. He first chose Town, but family friends recommended that we venture across the street to check out Café Miro instead. I wasn't opposed since I actually never even heard of the place before. I don't go for French cuisine often, just because it usually tends to be pricy. But my friend is a talented chef and loves the plating and aesthetics of French food, so French for dinner it was. We had a reservation for 7 p.m., and I was relieved to discover that the restaurant had a parking lot in the back. Actually, they share a parking lot with a bank and there are allotted Café Miro stalls, but customers can use the bank stalls after the bank closes. What a relief, since I'm usually stressed about finding parking in Kaimuki. BONUS: Since it was my friend's birthday, I called the restaurant while I was driving there to ask if they did anything for birthdays. The lady who answered the phone said they sometimes wrote happy birthday on the dessert plates, but they also could personalize the menu. I didn't know quite what that meant, but I just said to do something to make it special for my friend. Café Miro has a pleasant and quieter interior (unless there's a huge party there, which there was during the time of our visit), but we were able to enjoy a good meal and great conversation during our time there. Service was spot-on--they were really good at keeping my water glass full--and the birthday element was actually really nice. They wrote "Happy Birthday" and my friend's name on his menu, and when our meal concluded, they offered to roll up his menu like a scroll. What a nice touch so you could remember a special occasion. I had a little trouble navigating the menu here (even after our poor server explained it several times), but I was happy with everything I ordered for dinner. There's a Prixe Fixe menu or a Chef's Special Menu you can choose from. I would revisit Café Miro, but probably only for special occasions, just because I don't normally spend this much when going out for dinner. Here's what I would recommend: "Appetizer Tasting Plate": Instead of getting one appetizer, I would highly recommend getting this option because you get to try a great variety. While each portion of the featured items was small, my friend just split everything in half so we could experience the different tastes, flavors and textures. Included in this tasting plate were: ahi carpaccio wasabi mayo; cured New Zealand king salmon with sliced maui onions, salmon caviar and dill vinaigrette, fresh oysters, kona abalone and scallop with mushroom fond de veau sauce. I think my favorite of everything presented was the crab cake that was perfectly fried to a golden brown and super tasty on the inside. My second favorite was probably the ahi carpaccio ... what a great medley of flavors. I would order this appetizer again in a heartbeat. "Catch of the Day": Even though the menu can seem daunting, be sure to listen for the daily specials. During our visit, the Catch of the Day was mahi, and I opted for that. This had to be one of the best mahi entrees I ever had in my life. The mahi was soft and tasted fresh, and it came sautéed in an almond garlic butter. It was served with veggies and glorified mashed potatoes. I had my friend taste the mahi (he's around fresh fish a lot) and even he was impressed by the taste and presentation. I tell you, that almond garlic sauce did wonders. "Roasted Young Chicken with a Morel Mushroom Cream Sauce": This is the entrée my friend got, and I had a bite of it. The chicken was moist and tender, and the mushroom cream sauce was savory and delicious. I had contemplated ordering this for myself until I heard the "Catch of the Day" was mahi (which I ended up ordering). But, for any first-timer to Café Miro, this is a good, hearty and safe option. The chicken wasn't too dry, either. "Assorted Dessert Plate": Dessert came with my entrée since I ordered from the Grand Prixe Menu, but I shared the dessert plate with my friend. It was basically like a sampler of some of the desserts available for the evening. Among them included a sorbet (I can't remember the flavor, but I think it was guava or raspberry), crème brulee, tiramisu and fresh fruits. I think my favorite had to actually be the crème brulee, thanks to the caramelized surface. The tiramisu was light and delicious as well, and the sorbet was refreshing. Of course, I usually opt for something chocolate on the dessert menu, but no chocolate option was available, so I decided this dessert sampler was the best way to experience everything. "Duck Confit Topped with Thyme and Onion Fond de Canard": If I didn't order the "Catch of the Day," this is the other entrée I was contemplating ordering. 2.5 stars. My boyfriend's sister held her engagement party here last week and by party I mean four-course dinner. The cafe was nicely sectioned off for us. The service was more than attentive. But the meal confirmed that I'm a total purist when it comes to food--i.e. I don't like fusion cuisine, specifically French-Japanese. We began with the vichyssoise (cold potato leek soup). Um, it was cold and meatless. Moving on. The appetizer sampler was much better. It consisted of potato salad with prosciutto, marinated octopus, crab croquette, ahi tartar, and a five-layer vegetable quiche. All were enjoyable for the most part except the octopus (too lemony and chewy) and the quiche (lacked the taste of vegetables). As an entree I had a sirloin steak served with potato gratin, ratatouille, and root puree. The steak was nicely cooked but didn't blow my mind--I could've done similar work at home. The potato gratin was delicious but damn, the root puree tasted terrible! For the first time in my life, I couldn't believe a chef had actually sent this out. *shudders* The dessert sampler was another miss though it looked like a hit. There was mango cake, chocolate mousse, creme brulee, lilikoi sorbet, and fresh fruits. I liked the fresh fruits best, but I don't have much of a sweet tooth--or cavities for that matter. =P I'm glad I had a chance to try Cafe Miro if only because now I know it's overrated for sure. C'est si bon! Cafe Miro has got to be Oahu's best kept "secret" French bistro. Now, just because they serve French food, you don't have to get cringing with thoughts of stuffy, arrogant, old waiters with "funny kine" accents or fine bone china, polished silverware, white table cloths AND high prices. There are 2 Prix Fixe menus (3 or 4 course) to select from. You can customize your courses with several choices, add daily special(s) or substitutions. But found this restaurant to be a comfortable neighborhood restaurant with well-executed Japanese-French food. Food: WOW! Can we Taalk... Everything was artfully presented, well-executed under French techniques and Japanese dishes added a twist . Highlights of the night were: -Truffle soup was spectacular and was the BEST we've tasted EVER. Luxuriously earthy and richly flavored. -Beef Tataki was spicy, yet refreshingly light. Seared, thinly sliced rare beef was served with paper thin white onions and radishes (daikon). -4 choices appetizer plate consisting of a piece, each, of ahi carpaccio, crab croquette, shrimp in aspic, broiled oyster with "escargot" herb-butter and oeuf farci (French deviled egg). Great for sampling the appetizer menu..too many choices that you'd want to try all. -Hokkaido scallops with sea urchin sauce was like seafood Heaven! The scallops were so tender and medium-RARE. -Rack of lamb (actually only 2 chops) with a touch of mint done to perfection and so tasty you'd bleat out praises, too. -Rib-eye steak with red wine and wasabi sauce was outstanding! Again, the steak was perfectly medium-rare and the sauce napped (no drowning, here) the steak. Accompaniments were ratatouille, Brussels sprouts, and potato galette. -Dessert plate of airy orange mousse sitting atop sponge cake, very berry sorbet in tuile & topped with ladyfinger, mixed fresh fruits and creme brûlée. OMG, luckily, these desserts were "little bites"...hats (toque) off to the pastry chef as well! Ambience: It's a BISTRO...so don't expect froufrou. There were creative and functional uses of wine bottle corks and sort of dated/well worn table cloths and chairs. Tables are well-spaced that allow for easy access and you don't feel like you're squished in like a sardine. We felt comfortable enough to linger and continue our conversations even after dessert. Service: Started out attentive, patient and on spot but, as the evening wore on, we were left alone. When our meals were served, other wait staff came to assist. But, our water glasses weren't refilled often nor was our wine poured by wait staff. We found the menu confusing EVEN though it's Prix Fixe. Thankfully, our waiter was very patient while explaining the menu selections/ordering "process" to our group...it took about 2 times, but, I think I "lost" him because I had already made my choices. 4 1/2 Stars. Cafe Miro is like a French Bistro with Japanese fusion. The Menu is like a maze if you don't understand all the Mix & Match available. Unlike Sasabune where the vibe is our way or no way. Cafe Miro is willing to do almost anything to make you happy when it comes to substitutions. Kar (wife unit) started ordering for both of us and the next thing i knew loads of Appy sized plates started arriving. Most dishes were really good and we plan to return soon. If your an indecisive person this restaurant is not for you. It's all about being able to choose from so many outstanding choices. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Honolulu. This is my and wife's favorite restaurant, you can't beat the quality of food for the price. Went here for my wife's birthday and it didn't disappoint. The prix fix menu is easy to follow, the 4 course is a tad more than $50. No tricks or gottas, some items more cost a little more but is easily spelled out for you. The service is excellent! When ordering for the starters, it's better to choose the sampler, as you have a good variety of different flavors. For entrees, our favorites include: rack of lamb, short ribs and duck confit (that is an awesome dish!) and curry scallops (to die for). Their desserts recently got better... as this used to be their weak spot. If there is anything I point out that is the tacky plastic linens. Highly recommended... 06/05/14 Update: Wanted to find a new place for my son and daughter-in-law, at least new for them.... Went to Cafe Miro for dinner tonight. It was their first time there so the the waiter patiently explained the menu options.... They basically have 2 prix fixe menus...one was $43 and $54...then there were some add on charges for special items on the menu. They always have foie gras which is a favorite. We all thought the food was excellent! Appetizers to dessert were well prepared and the portions were very generous...they even provided a complimentary carrot soup and the chef gave us a tasting of one of the evening's specials, lamb stew. The service was excellent and the restaurant is not noisy! This little hidden treasure of a restaurant in Kaimuki really deserves more attention. What really surprised me is there were so few people dining there...for the excellent food and the great pricing, I'd expect them to have a full house every night!..I sure hope this place has lots of business because they surely deserve it....Lots of free parking in the back off of 9th Avenue. Café Miro is a small little fine-dining restaurant in the heart of uptown Honolulu's Kaimuki area. I just discovered it a few months ago, although Chef Shigeru Kobayashi opened it in 1997. It's an intimate place with a total of maybe 40 seats, plus a bar counter with a couple of stools, plus a party room for a dozen diners. We went there on a Tuesday night and it ended up being packed. Which is a good sign. In fact, Town Restaurant across the street on Waialae Avenue, and Champa Thai Restaurant across the street on 9th Avenue were both pretty packed. Not bad. Hopeful signs, perhaps, that the economy is picking up? They started us off with an amuse-bouche of Chilled Okinawa Sweet Potato Soup. The little cup of lavender soup was almost like melted ice cream on the tongue, accented on top with a gentle swirl of cream. Very tasty indeed and a wonderful little hors d'oeuvre to whet the appetite. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The menu is prix fixe and the wife decided on the three-course choice. Her appetizer was Beer Batter Fried Anago (sea eel), somewhat like unagi (fresh water eel), but a little milder in flavor. Much softer too. Of course we traded tastes of each other's selections, so I was able to enjoy the anago. It was beautiful how it melted on the tongue, intermingling its subtle flavors with the familiar taste of the deep-fried tempura batter. Her entrée selection was Roasted Rack of Lamb with Shiitake Mushrooms and Mint Sauce. Oh my, it was tender. I didn't particularly swoon over the mint sauce, and in fact, I seldom eat the ubiquitous mint jelly that restaurants usually include as a condiment when you order lamb chops. The lamb was accompanied by potato gratin, a broccoli floret, and a sprig of mint. I decided to choose my dishes from the Chef's Special Menu, a four-selection option (you get an additional appetizer) that is essentially the same at the three-course menu, but with additional choices. Actually, it doesn't matter if you want the three or four-choice option, you can choose from any of the appetizers or entrées. My first course was the Appetizer Tasting Plate, consisting of a sampling of five different appetizers: Ahi (Tuna) Carpaccio with Wasabi Mayonnaise, Crab Cake, Uni (Sea Urchin) Aspect on Carrot Soufflé, Marinated Taco (Octopus), Sweet Fig and Potato Salad wrapped in Prosciutto on Wasabi Mayonnaise. The samples were so very delicious that I lingered and savored, lingered and savored, and the next thing you know, when I opened my eyes, the plate was cleaned up. My second appetizer was Sautéed Fresh Scallops with Honey Curry Cream Sauce. The waiter asked if we wanted an extra plate so the wife could share. I wanted the scallops all to myself, but since it was her birthday dinner, I relented. Lordie, the things I do for that woman! The scallop (remember, I was forced to have just one instead of both) was so sweet, so tender, so delicious with the sauce. I was tempted to order another, but I kept my cool. Next time we go there, if I opt for the scallops, and if the wife is with me, I'll order her own plate for her. How nice of me, no? My entrée was Braised Short Rib with Port Wine Reduction Sauce. I've had some pretty good short ribs in my day - the best to date probably were at Okada in the Wynn Hotel and The Ranch at Harrah's, both in Las Vegas. Well, I'm here to tell you the short ribs at Café Miro is right up there, top shelf, with those two restaurants. The beef was so tender. To meld two trite and overused phrases, they were fall-off-the-bone fork tender. I had the same sides as the wife, plus a little serving of tomato-stewed zucchini. And do you know, I unashamedly sopped up the wine reduction with my sweet bun? By the way, I loved the chewiness of the bun. For dessert, we both eschewed the fruit and cheese plate, and had instead, the Chef's Dessert: Crème Brulée, Coffee Ice Cream on crisp, Coconut Soufflé, fruits and cookie stick. A perfect, sweet end to a lovely evening on a special day. You should know that Café Miro is closed on Mondays, as well as Thanksgiving, and New Year's Day and the day after. And they're only open for dinner. Therefore, if you want to make a reservation for Tuesday dinner (and you really should because they apparently fill up fast), don't wait until Monday because they won't return to confirm your reservation message until early afternoon on Tuesday. Cafe Miro is the perfect combination of delicious fine dining food, fantastic service, and cozy atmosphere. I treated my parents to dinner tonight and my parents are VERY picky and particular. Everything tasted amazing from the vegetable tartine all the way down to the dessert assortment. We were waited on my multiple staff but there was no confusion or frustration and everything went smoothly! I would definitely come again! read more
