Amazing cacao based drinks! To start off, the service was quick and very kind. I decided to go with their bestseller chocolate based drink. It was made with homemade cashew milk. The cacao is from Guatemala I believe and genuinely it was very rich and delicious. As someone who has a lot of cacao based drinks, this one was one of the richest ones. However, I was personally not a fan of the cashew milk. They have a coconut milk alternative that I should've gotten but I wanted to try the drink as they intended. An appalling and deeply humiliating experience involving my trained medical service dog. My wife and I are visiting Sacramento from San Diego, and we came to Café Xocolatl genuinely excited to explore its selection of Latin American chocolates, treats, and food. As a proud Latino, I make a deliberate effort to support small businesses that celebrate and showcase our culture. We intended to spend approximately $100 on products to enjoy during our visit and take home with us. Instead, we left without purchasing anything because of the rude, hostile, and completely unnecessary way we were treated. I have an eight-year-old Portuguese Water Dog who is fully trained as a medical service dog. He alerts me to potentially serious medical episodes before they occur, which means his presence by my side is not optional, recreational, or a matter of convenience. He is a task-trained service animal protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. When we entered, my dog was calmly standing beside my wife on a leash, exactly as he has been trained to do. He was not barking, wandering, sniffing merchandise, touching products, or behaving disruptively in any way. He was approximately four feet away from the nearest shelf. Despite this, the woman working at the front yelled across the very small shop that we needed to keep him away from the shelf because the products were at the level of his mouth. My wife politely explained that we would be careful and that he was a trained service animal. Rather than responding professionally, the employee gave us a sarcastic, dismissive "ummm, okay," turned away, and then muttered under her breath that we should "probably keep him by the door." The contempt in her tone and the dirty look she gave us were unmistakable. My wife and I looked at each other in disbelief. We had entered excited to support this business and were instead made to feel as though my disability, my medical needs, and the service dog who protects my health made us undesirable customers. This was not a misunderstanding involving an uncontrolled or disruptive animal. My dog was quiet, leashed, supervised, and nowhere near the merchandise. The employee's behavior was not a reasonable request delivered respectfully. It was condescending, antagonistic, and profoundly lacking in basic compassion or professionalism. As we left, my wife explained that he was a legitimate service dog, that he is legally permitted to remain with me, and that muttering disparaging comments about customers while they can clearly hear them is extraordinarily rude and in terrible taste. At no point did the employee apologize, attempt to clarify her concern respectfully, or make any effort to repair the situation. Living with a medical condition is already difficult enough without being publicly singled out, spoken down to, and made to feel unwelcome because I require a trained service animal. No customer should have to disclose or defend their medical needs merely to browse a café without being treated like a nuisance. I cannot recommend this establishment after the humiliating and alienating treatment we received. A business that serves the public, particularly one presenting itself as a welcoming place to experience Latin American culture, should understand both basic customer service and the rights of people with disabilities. Until its staff receives serious training on service animals, disability access, and respectful communication, I would strongly encourage other patrons, especially those who rely on service animals, to spend their money somewhere they will be treated with dignity. We arrived prepared to enthusiastically support this small business. We left feeling degraded and unwelcome. No chocolate, coffee, or cultural experience is worth being treated as though your health condition makes you an inconvenience. read more

They are a non-dairy business and make their own milk alternatives (cashew and oat). I also saw on their menu that they source some teas from two local businesses! I can totally understand how someone would love this place. I envision a purist, a foodie, a person who likes to eat clean really enjoying it. Not so much for me. I'm just a regular sugar, flour and butter girl. I completely appreciate how enjoyable this place could be though. I am not knocking points off at all for any of the coconut sugar and cacao. I did take off points because my pet peeve at eating/drinking establishments is when there are ingredients that are not listed on a menu. The avocado toast had pepitas, which I would have asked to exclude. The mocha had cacao nibs that I scooped off and would have said no thanks to. The service was slow but there was only one person taking orders and making drinks, but she was very kind and upgraded a size because of the wait. Been going here almost every day on my Sac trip - I've tried the ceremonial cacao: heart of earth, Dalileo, and Cru. The Cru was very interesting and more sweet compared to the other two. If you're trying to feel the ceremonial cacao benefits def go for options 1-4 on the list. If it's your first time, make sure you drink a good enough amount of water and consume with an empty - partial empty stomach. You'll def be happy. They also sell some unique chocolates and some sipping cacao/ceremonial to make at home. Spicy, not too sweet, with a hint of soft herbs and cinnamon. I think it's a special blend - the counter let me compare their house blend to the Shakti blend. I highly recommend if you're a chai fan. This is my go-to spot to find gifts for the chocolate lovers in my life and to find unique chocolates to treat myself. Street parking is easy either in 9th or around Franklin D. Roosevelt Park. It's all paid parking, but it's also easily walkable from free street parking in the area. The cafe is on the smaller side, but it's a great spot for a meeting, drink or food and an amazing spot for vegans and vegetarians, and even gluten free options. The owner Ariel, and his team are very knowledgable and can talk to you about the different items available in the store. I always ask about their most recent favorites because they're always getting new chocolate bars in. The pricing ranges and some of the chocolate bars are much more of a treat than a casual purchase. You're paying for quality though and some of the $10-$15 chocolate bars I've purchased have been AMAZING. The cafe items are very reasonable though if you're looking for a snack or refreshing drink. The cafe is welcoming and cozy and it's easy to hang around and browse their selection. I'll often stop in to pick up a Choquiero's Mayan Rose, one of the house chocolate bars), while I'm running errands and it's always a nice treat.
