While the new space looks nice (great job with the reno!), they've got some work to to. The salads are now 1/2 the size they used to be for the same price. I ordered the cobb salad and it was served to me without tomatoes, cucumbers, blue cheese crumbles, or the baguette. When I mentioned this to one of the servers she added a couple grape tomatoes (maybe 3 total) and some blue cheese crumbles. She said they were out of the cucumbers, but didn't suggest something else to replace it or give me extra of the other stuff. Plus, I still didn't get the baguette. Very disappointing and definitely not worth the $12. Really hoping they can turn it around. read more

Ordered the sesame tuna salad. It took them 45 minutes to bring it to me & it didn't include the garbanzo beans or the cucumber that the menu stated. The tuna was clearly not freshly seared and it did not come with a baguette, even though the menu said it would. Would not come back or recommend. read more

The wait time is consistently 60 min +. we've been here multiple times and our most recent wait was 2.5 hours. They took the healthy vegan options off of the menu due to "shortage of staff" but they're not hiring, hmmm. The young college students taking orders are very kind, but they're the only ones. Owners have a huge attitude and treat customers like they're a nuisance. Not once did we ever get checked on for water refills, or just an update on our food. This place doesn't deserve your buisness. They need a wake up call. read more

This morning I went to Cafe 13 for breakfast with my family! We were so excited to try Cafe 13 again, as we are locals in Golden and want to support our merchants! However, we had a disturbing experience after our food arrived. Our portion sizes for potatoes seemed a little off, one was the perfect amount and my father's portion was a little skimpy. No big deal! When we politely asked a LOVELY server if we could get a little more, she gladly said "yes, no problem" . . . suddenly, an extremely rude kitchen manager (glasses and dark hair) peered over the server's shoulder and aggressively said "NO, that is the portion size, 4oz, yep thats it, 4oz." We were shocked at the way that this man spoke to us. We immediately lost our appetite and felt very embarrassed for Cafe 13. Moments later, the man came back to our table with a small side of potatoes and angrily SLID them across the counter to my father, saying nothing! This is not how you treat customers in a professional work environment. We are really bummed out about this experience because we always loved Cafe 13 before this day. We will most likely not be coming back in the near future and hope that management can fix this problem and will always put the customer first! Very disappointing. read more

This little restaurant took me by surprise as to how good it wss. The wait was short despite the appearance of a line out the door. If you order baked goods they set them on the counter which is kind of annoying. I didnt know about my waiting cinnamon roll until it was cold and hard. You have to push through the seating line to retrieve the baked goods (they deliver the food to your table) The food was above expectations and I liked that you can order portions for any appetite. read more

I got a honey lavender iced latte, breakfast burrito with veggie sausage, and cinnamon roll. All of it was fabulous! They quickly got busy, all the customers were chatting and happy. Nice renovation, but everything else has gone downhill terribly. Some of this is new staff start-up (eg none of the original employees were re-hired after the renovation, so I'm not surprised when service is slow or the kitchen gets the order wrong). However, the new menu needs serious revision - portions are significantly small, quality is terrible, and prices have risen. So far, I've had one veggie egg sandwich that was mediocre, a catastrophe of a waffle+egg plate, and a vegan scramble that was raw. Really, I want a suggestion box so I don't have to complain on yelp. Or they should hand out a survey with every meal to get rapid feedback about how the kitchen is improving/not. Sadness. read more

I love the food and drinks here. Not to mention the beautiful atmosphere. I will go here to work on homework and study for school and the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed. I always order breakfast when I come here (because it's a cafe) and my favorite is the oatmeal. It comes with a side of fruit and it's topped with walnuts. It's also gluten free, which is huge for me. They offer a full bar, and even though I'm not able to drink, sometimes I'll get their on tap kombucha, which is their own concoction. The service here is great. You order at the front, then are seated with a number. They deliver your food or drinks to you when they're ready. Great place in Golden! read more

Coffee was good, pastries (sticky bun especially) were tasty. The fall hash bowl with brisket was excellent. BUT, the Aussie hash bowl was one of the most disgusting breakfast dishes I've ever had. The avocado is really frozen guacamole. Add that with super strong blue cheese and you get a nasty mix between the eggs, blue cheese, and nasty guacamole. Avoid the Aussie hash bowl at all costs, not sure who thought that those Ingredients were a good idea together (my wife ordered it). Just avoid that dish and you'll be happy. read more

This place is great! Good food and great service! My only complaint would be the way that they handle their food when it comes to allergies. I went in today to grab some food to go and mentioned that I cannot have gluten or dairy. for allergy reasons. I was then asked by the person that was taking my order "is that for preference reasons or do you have celiac?" I found this to be a little odd. It was almost as if they only take celiac cases seriously and other health reasons kind of go to the wayside. I then had to explain that I have a rare disease and he seemed to struggle on the computer. I have never had this issue at any other restaurant. So I'm not sure if this is an actual complaint. Came on some what bread out of my kitchen mayo turkey and pesto I could have made at home for almost 10 dollars. Wow!! Insane it was like I ordered a kids meal not good at all waited over 30 minutes for our meal and it was lack luster at best. My husband orders a sandwich he was not impressed with and my daughter had a light meal since there is no child menu offered. I also order a coffee which was so small for 4 dollar I should have went to Starbucks. It was so disappointing and 40 dollars later wow! Will jot go back and half the stuff on their menu is insane. Really good food and drinks. Our party had a variety of breakfast dishes, I had the pork green chile soup, a homemade Sticky Bun, and a cappuccino. The cappuccino was just like they serve it in Italy, not like something from the Seattle Corporation. The latte art on the top was a pleasant surprise. The sticky bun was soft and gooey but not overly sweet. The green chile soup had great chunks of pork and a fresh green chile flavor. It was only a little hot because these were the big mild chiles. The Breakfast Old Fashion was a delicious cocktail. The hint of maple syrup enhanced the flavor instead of covering it up. Kudos. All five of us loved our meals and we will find our way back. One of our party has a severe food allergy and they took it very seriously. they even typed it up on the computer order so I could see that it would be clear to the kitchen staff. We had a fabulous eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and toast breakfast as well as a excellent lemon blueberry muffin. They have stayed true to their traditional roots with a great baked goods and fast & friendly service. I highly recommend Cafe 13. We also like that they have a commitment to reducing waste and recycling. I love drinking tea out of real cups. Conceptually, this is a great coffee shop in Golden. It is clearly independently owned and full of old junky furniture that is rarely wiped down, awkward disconnected spaces, and tons of Mines Nerds busy doing sciencey save-the-world things on the laptops. Coffee, tea, and treats are ordered from the counter in front, and there are tons of weird side rooms to move to once you have your goodies. Sadly, they seem to be a bit pissy if you do not know the drill/are not a regular. For instance, I ordered tea, they said what kind? And got pissy when I could not mind read their secret tea menu they keep under the counter. If you had a half hour to login to their Wifi, which apparently requires a reboot before your machine will talk correctly to their wifi, and a couple more hours to hang out working on your differential equations homework, this would be the place. I only had a half hour and wanted to do a few things on my laptop, but it took them over 10 minutes to print out my wifi-with-purchase code, and then 3 attempts to login in did not work, and I was not alone in my quest - Other smart people were rebooting and clearing cookies and crap. I don't often write one star reviews, but Cafe 13 sadly deserves one. We had the unfortunate experience to choose this spot for an early lunch on Memorial Day. Admittedly, they were very crowded. However their is no excuse for the 40 minutes it took from when we placed our order at the counter to when the order was delivered to us on the patio. The honest thing for them to do would have been to tell us, at the time of ordering, that they were really backed up and it would be a long wait for our food. We might have gone somewhere else - D-Deli or Snarfs - but this was not the case. And if the food, when it arrived, had been extraordinary, perhaps the wait would have been worth it. Alas not. The french toast was bland, and missing the promised sausage or bacon. The grilled cheese with pesto was uninteresting and soggy. We don't get to Golden often, and certainly won't come back here. read more

I was so looking forward to my experience here, per the other reviews, but I was not impressed at all. I had an iced Americano, which was very good, but how do you not have regular simple syrup to sweeten it with? Trying to get the raw sugar to dissolve in took about 20 minutes of stirring. I also had to try the cinnamon roll. I specifically asked the employee if it was good, and she said they were awesome. Not so at all. While the portion was big, it was NOT very good or fresh. It was heated in a microwave and topped with not enough icing, and almost stale. I would really expect to have fresh cinnamon rolls at 8am. It wasn't super early, and it wasn't afternoon. If they're not at their best then, when would they be? I might have given the place 3 stars, but the fact that it cost $7.50 for these two items is just a rip-off. $4 for a bad cinnamon roll? Cafe 13 has come a long way in the past years, so give it a chance to impress you. I used to be a bit irritated with the service (had a couple rude barista experiences) and the shop wasn't big enough. But I've been pleasantly surprised with recent visits. I enjoy the large selection of teas here (they stock Montana Tea Co). They've always got tasty baked treats and their espresso is one of my favorites in Golden. The egg scrambles are delicious and they've even served it with a side salad with delicious dressing when I wasn't feeling the hash browns. The space is beautiful now with several cozy rooms to work or relax. Glad to see positive changes in Cafe 13. I'll be back! read more

Really great breakfast, which maybe a lot of people overlook. Solid coffee. There is so much seating here - there are two back rooms full of seating. I guess it does have a slightly trendy vibe, but I don't think it will bother you. Just retreat to the 1970s style back room after you order. Or sit in the hall and watch the people through the window. Everytime I pass through town, I think of this as my goto spot. More so than the other cafes on mainstreet. Lucky #13! This is the first review I've been compelled to write while still sitting in the establishment. I was looking for a cafe in downtown Golden and was drawn in by the sidewalk sign about a block away from Cafe 13. Peering through the window, I saw a homey atmosphere with a clean appearance, so I decided to walk in. After quickly perusing the lunch menu, I settled on a SoCal salad, a mix of ingredients I see is fairly common here in Colorado--turkey, avocado, bacon and greens. I asked the barista about the Chai. I'm a skeptic because most Chai concentrates are sugar-laden frappacino wanna be's. He assured me in his 25 years as a barista, the founder of Bhakti Chai has created a magical potion after finding the best recipe directly from India. Sold. But still skeptical... When my food and Chai arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by what far exceeded my expectations of a fairly traditional order. The salad was generous (consistent with the price point) and prepared splendidly. The turkey was fresh, obviously not a shredded version of a cheap lunchmeat. I'm a sucker for a salad that is chopped into bite sized pieces and was happy to see that everything on this salad was well-proportioned. The bacon was both good in quality and size and the sundried tomatoes were a nice creative twist on a traditional diced beefsteak tomato. I can say with certainty that this was the best salad of this kind that I have ever had. And then there was the chai. The barista was absolutely right. Bhakti Chai was the best I've experienced. It was a nice mix of sweet and spicy without one essence overpowering another. It sets a strong example for what chai can be and despite living in Oregon Chai country, I'll be seeking out this Colorado brand beverage. There are a few rooms (and a hallway) in which to sit at Cafe 13 and all seem comfortable and conducive to work or pleasure. There is free WiFi, but each patron is given a separate code and it took me many many tries to get it to work. This is my sole complaint about the cafe. I'd recommend the owners just spring for free wi-fi and deal with the poachers who steal the code from surrounding streets. Better to reward thieves than punish patrons. If you find yourself in Golden and you're looking for a place in which to rest your legs and fill your belly, look no further. Well done, Cafe 13. read more

I'm a long-time resident of Golden, and we 86'ed this place back in 2013 when we had to wait 20 minutes for brewed coffee at 7:30 in the morning, and they lost our meal ticket while we sat there waiting for over an hour. This morning we decided to finally give them another try, and the same thing happened We waited at a table for 40 minutes for our meal. I like coming here because its incredibly convenient. The ham and cheese and chocolate puff things are super delicious, but only if they are fresh... A cup of the pork green chili is satisfying on a cold day and sometimes I can't get enough of that California salad (it's the honey mustard dressing!!)... too bad it's a bit pricey for a cafe! I really wanted to like this place but my experience was far from good. First off the girls working the front are very rude and I almost felt like I was a nuisance to their time when I was ordering. I ordered my food to go and sat there forever waiting. Finally when my dish arrived the girl forgot it was to go and took it back to box it, which she forgot about and I had to ask where my food was after another long wait.
