Tonight I communicated with Café 290 about my order. It was supposed to be coming from GrubHub. The woman I spoke with on the phone was super helpful and an hour after my delivery was supposed to be picked up, she called me back and told me that Grubhub had not come and that she was coming to deliver it personally herself. Taylor Location I ordered the Thursday Special, beef tips with gravy over rice with two sides to go. The rice was not properly cooked. It was hard. I had to dig it out my teeth. The beef tips were tender and seasoned. When I received the bill, I saw where it said they charge 3% for credit/debit cards. I thought I'm paying cash. My bill was $13.51 so I gave her a $20. She gave me back $6. When I asked about my change she said We don't do change. I said then I need another $1. I left the .51 on the register. If you're not using coins, you should let people know just like you do about the 3% charge on card transactions. read more

I wanted a homemade dessert that would soothe my soul. As soon as I arrived I was greeted with a smile & a few jokes. That made me feel like I was right at home . As the sweet lady seated us ,I could see all the dessert choices .I instantly asked are those homemade? "Yes" she replied. I instantly felt excited. This restaurant feels like my grandma's house. Wonderful spot in Elgin. They have a wide variety of dishes so everyone can find something they enjoy. The queso was wonderful, my burger had the yummy char on the patty and the rest of the party was able to order breakfast even though it was almost noon. There is a rich history to the establishment and learning about it was fun. The service was spot on as well. read more

The food is very good and you can't beat the prices. Although there is no cell service in the building and they haven't had working wifi every time I go. So no phone scrolling or doing any work as I eat alone. Tragic. Everything else is fantastic. read more

Tried Cafe 290 a few weeks ago for the first time and LOVED their chili. We had a great waitress and it wasn't busy (2:30 weekday). I had the fried green tomato BLT which was good and husband had the fried catfish which he enjoyed. Selling point for us was the chili and service. It's located in an old barracks building which is cool. Fast forward to last week, the husband and I wanted to go back for chili. We went on a Friday around 12:30 and it was the lunch rush but were seated immediately. We both ordered chili (slightly greasier than first time) and it was still very flavorful. UNPLEASANT PART- I ordered the taco salad and was super disappointed. On the menu it says it comes with pico de Gallo and guacamole but mine only had beans, taco meat, cheese, and lettuce. I reviewed the menu again to make sure it said it had pico and guac and then asked our waitress, Kara, about it. Mind you, I had to wait about 15 minutes before she came over to our table again. She told me the pico was cooked into the taco meat (the bell peppers and onions, etc). I commented that pico was usually fresh tomatoes and pointed to the menu to ask about the guacamole as well. She said you have to ask for both of those things and that it doesn't come automatically. I asked for both items and she brought me a small bowl of pico and guac. The guac was super runny but the taco salad was better with the two additions. When we got our bill, we were charged extra for both of those sides which surprised me given its listed in the description on the menu. The taco salad also is not served with salsa or a dressing. I had asked for jalapeño ranch when I placed my order and saw on the bill that we were charged for it as well. Usually taco salad comes with salsa or a dressing. Again, we waited for Kara to come pick up our check/cc and after 15 minutes my husband just walked up To counter to ask another woman to check us out. Drive by everyday and say to myself, "it's always packed, must be good. I need to try it some day." Well, today was the day and it was amazing! Parking lot was full and I was expecting a wait, but walked in and got a table immediately. Very cool atmosphere, WW2 barracks and comfortable seating. Could tell this was a regular breakfast stop for many locals. I'm a biscuit and gravy kinda gal but I've been searching for good chicken fried steak since moving to the area so I ordered chicken fried steak and eggs and I'm so glad I did. Maybe the best chicken fried steak I have EVER had. Tender and well season steak, crispy and favorable crust, and perfect gravy. The eggs were perfectly cooked in the biscuits... Oh, my goodness! We always like small town cafes with classic favorites and. flavors. The greater Austin area has lost Threadgills, Hills, & the Nighthawk Thankfully The TEXAN Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto and the Cafe 290 survive. The food isn't fancy but everything tastes good and prices so reasonable. Service was prompt with a friendly greeting and good follow up. read more

the service and staff were very nice! atmosphere was not rushed and there was plenty of seating. the build of the building is cute and unique. mozzarella sticks are chefs kiss. the actual meals tasted fine. nothing special, however the menu had a variety of options. note: breakfast all day! they also have a kids menu with variety. i wouldn't recommend coming here for a fancy dining event, but a chill outing would be best fit. read more

Rating as a "cafe"...diner. Our server was friendly, slow service. Wasn't crowded. In fact we drove a long way from dripping Springs to go here because we saw the owner on the news crying because they didn't have business and we're talking about closing. I've been here before and the food looks so good and our sandwich was awesome so I wanted to go back and give them some business. I really enjoyed my chicken fried "chicken", in fact I ended up sharing it with my husband; we decided it was so much food! Great mashed potatoes and green beans. The gravy was ok. We took home most of his chicken fried "steak" which was very thin, not as good. Wasn't worth driving that far for the food but was worth driving that far to help save a business due to the covid19 closures. read more

I've past this cafe for years, finally I stopped and had breakfast. Friendly wait staff, got our order correct and in somewhat a timely manner. I got the 290 breakfast which consisted of bacon, eggs, hash browns and biscuits. My wife had the yogurt with fresh fruit and the French toast. Our waitress brought out some "extra" buttered Texas toast and it was Great!! Plenty of coffee and ice water to wash it down! What can I say, it was a good breakfast! One of the last American roadside diners/cafe. In a small town. Cafe 290 has been a staple in Manor Texas for 40+ years. The breakfast plates are huge! They have a daily lunch specials. I often enjoy a their chicken fried steak. Service can be a total hit or miss. Let's talk about the Pies!!! OMG they are to die for! I wanted to try everything on the breakfast menu and went a little crazy. I ordered the big country breakfast with scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, and added a pancake. I ordered the biscuits and gravy without adding sausage and just cut up a piece of sausage that my meal came with. The food was awesome, coffee was great and service was excellent. Not too far from Austin lies this iconic building that I've passed for years and never bothered to pop in. I finally tried it for breakfast and I must say I wouldn't mind coming here once every couple of weeks or so. It seems like a place where one would stop for some late breakfast on the side of the highway, but there are a bunch of regulars who come in every few days. The staff is friendly; I usually sit at counters at places like this. The coffee was just the right amount of sweet to wake me up in the morning. They also have alcohol, but I didn't take part. It's a new thing they're doing and it's pretty cool. For breakfast, I ordered a simple two eggs, two meats, hash browns and toast. The sausage was cooked thoroughly, and the ham tasted like it had its own recipe. Hash browns could've been crispier, but they were tasty. Other than breakfast, they do have sandwiches, burgers, and other things for lunch if you come in later in the day. If you're coming into Austin or going out of town on 290 and want to get a start before a road trip, this is the place to go. Surprised I never came until recently. read more

We have only eaten breakfast here, and I really enjoyed the breakfast BLT. My kids shared one of their meals and it was great and what I expected. My husband thought his meal was just okay. I believe it was chicken fried chicken and he is very particular about it so that is why 4 stars. Will continue to eat here in the future.
