Love Cafe 50's! It's your typical diner but the food is great! My favorite is the Monte Cristo. Their shakes and Vanilla Coke are also super tasty! Fries and a side of ranch as well! (Love a place that has good ranch). Overall they do diner food well, definitely wouldn't come here looking for a healthy meal. I tend to order takeout from here more than dining in, but they always do a great job of getting my order right. There is generally street parking available nearby. read more

Really awesome experience! This place didn't have much happening on Google, so we took a bit of a chance--and we were happy that we did! The owner, Craig, is SO sweet. Upon both entering and leaving we had a very cheerful conversation. Our server didn't seem as content, but everyone else was great. We only got milkshakes and fries, so it wasn't a super comprehensive tasting, but they were all really good! I got the Peanut Butter Chocolate Cup shake and my friend got the Apple Pie shake. I love a good diner! I come here a couple times a week and everyone there treats me like family. The decor is so cool because everywhere you look it just makes you feel like you get a sense of what it was like in those days. The service is second to none. Victor, Kim, Daisy, Benjamin and everyone else are just fantastic people. Their menu has a variety of items. I usually do breakfast or a burger. I love mixing it up. Their milkshakes are top tier. 1st off, the customer service is spot on! I started coming to this establishment in 2022 after volunteering at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in support of Memorial Day. It was every Tuesday after. I came in a large group (Monster Energy) and they have always taken care of us. The food is outstanding and priced well. If you enjoy the 1950's, you will not be let down. Wow, what an absolute gem of a place Cafe 50's is. I had middle of the road expectations given the lower rating and fairly boastful language in their menu saying x or y item is the best of its kind... but I love anything Americana so I just had to see for myself. Well, they should brag even more because Cafe 50's was a 10/10 for us. First, that Monte Cristo sandwich truly is better than Disney's. Deep-fried and decadent, it's one of the best new things I've eaten in a while! Highly recommend it with a Vanilla Coke. My bf also loved his double patty bacon burger. We topped it all off with a delicious hot fudge sundae that was filled to the brim. But what really sets Cafe 50's apart is the stellar service you'll get from every person in the joint. Such a good time! We really enjoyed our food, service was wonderful. It was super busy, but food came out really quick for a 9 person group. By no means is the kids plates small. I used to come here regularly decades ago and decided to check it out again because during this ongoing pandemic, there are few places open past 9PM. Cafe 50's to the rescue! They're open until midnight even on a weekday. Other restaurant closing times have been unpredictable during coronavirus with hours changing but not updated on Yelp/online or staff closing early. There are a ton of vintage ads and paraphernalia on the walls and ceiling (no pics allowed), which transport you back to the mid-20th Century. Coming in around 9PM on a weeknight, it's not crowded at all. If you come on a weekend during the morning/day it's packed and you can expect to wait. The menu has a broad selection of basic American diner fare from burgers and sandwiches, to all-day breakfast, to hot plates. It stands out due to having over 2 dozen types of shakes, which can be made with regular ice cream or nonfat vanilla froyo. I love the throwback items such as the hard-to-find egg creams, real malts, 2-cent fizzy drink (carbonated water from the real soda fountain), and the 98-cent deviled eggs. The portions are big and hefty, so you get a great value. The serving staff all seem to be kind, good-hearted people. That's my favorite part of this place. read more

The last diner on Route 66 is a trip --literally, figuratively, and gastronomically. Just a few miles from the terminus at the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, Café 50's is the last diner on the quintessential American highway. And the owners, staff, ambiance, and menu live and breathe a bygone era when (at least for us in "flyover" country) California was thought of as a State of Mind. To their credit, management requires proof of vaccination to eat inside, and the wait staff all wear masks in addition to classic '50s ice cream parlor dresses and shirts. And it's obvious they love working there; they don't just take your order but chat you up about your day and food choices. They're delightful. The food is what you expect from a diner: comfort food, well-made and reasonably priced, with breakfast served all day. Growing up in the '50s, I expected the usual malts and shakes. But there's the "Sputnik Turkey & Swiss Melt" sandwich, the "Leave it to Beaver omelette," "California Burger," and blueberry pancakes. In addition, there is what we think of as "typical" of California: Avocado and spinach omelette, the "Healthy Fresh Sandwich," and "Deviled Eggs." We settled on a typical diner breakfast that included two eggs, breakfast potatoes, turkey sausages, and whole-wheat toast; all washed down with freshly made coffee. Excellent! While waiting for our food to arrive, I scanned the small jukebox mounted on the wall in our booth (filled with '50s rock 'n' roll classics that also blared from speakers throughout) and then got up and walk around the dining room trying to absorb the overwhelming collection of '50s memorabilia displayed floor to ceiling and the ceiling. Words can't describe the array of items, including many consumer brands that no longer exist and Saturday afternoon B movie posters. It's a trip for the stomach and the mind. I don't enjoy writing negative reviews, but I decided to write this one because I had an unusually bad experience. It was mid-afternoon on a nice day when a friend and I craved burgers, fries, and a coke. We normally aren't big red meat and fried food fans, but a craving is...well, IYKYK (if you know, you know). To begin, we ordered Cokes. The first sip was so unpleasant that we both wrinkled our noses and made an "ugh" sound. The waiter offered to bring fresh drinks. Meanwhile our burgers and fries were served. The hot, perfectly crunchy, well-salted, French fries were reassuring. We confidently took big bites of our hamburgers. There was that disgusting "ugh" taste again. Neither of us took a second bite. Meanwhile, fresh drinks arrived, and I gulped my cola hoping to get rid of the burger's unpleasant flavor. BIG mistake. Another "ugh." taste. I cautioned my friend to take a small sip in case hers was equally bad. It was. We asked for the check. Since the service had been friendly, we decided to give them a nice tip, and agreed to write a review. We looked for clues as to why both the food and drinks tasted so bad. The restaurant interior was meant to reflect the 50s; there were photos of mid-century celebrities on the walls (we were able to identify the majority), and a "jukebox jitterbug jive joint" decor. The original intention was to invoke nostalgia, but now it just seemed worn-out and drab. A layer of something that looked like built-up grease covered some cooking surfaces; not unusual in an old restaurant, but not very appetizing either. Maybe the flavor was from rancid cooking oil, or dishes and glasses the dishwasher didn't clean properly, or an unusual situation (maybe something spoiled?) the staff wasn't aware of. This place rocks, especially for kids. I used to come to this place when I was going to SMC and the prices are a lot higher now then back then but I still felt it was a good value. The wait staff worked in tandem so we were never left alone for long. They gave our little two year old a balloon and spin toy upon being seated. They have so much fun stuff to look at in terms of decorations. I particularly liked seeing the Chesterfield ads with Ronald Regan. The food was also great. They have a huge selection and it's really a great place to get an omelette or a milkshake. BTW There is lots of parking across the street. read more

Today was the second time I've been to Cafe 50's and it was as good as the first time. Surprisingly, several of the staff recognized me from the first time I ate there and welcomed me back. I love the ambiance and the menu is resplendent with more comfort foods than I can eat in a month. Breakfast is served all day and I'm impressed that they offer Malted Waffles and REAL 100% Maple Syrup. I had the Super Double Burger which has 2 Slices of Thick & Creamy Jack Cheese and Bacon. The Burger Patties are huge and the Jack Cheese was melted to perfection. This will easily feed 2 hungry people. I ordered the Onion Rings as a side dish and they were perfectly battered and fried. I think I tasted a hint of Beer in the Light & Flaky Batter. For my beverage I ordered my favorite Black & White Milkshake (made with Vanilla Ice Cream & Chocolate Syrup). I asked for them to add Marshmallow Syrup to the Shake and that made it 100 times better! I could have drank 3 of those Shakes they were that good. At many restaurants the Cakes and Pies are treated as an afterthought, but not here. The Chocolate Cake is piled high with Rich Chocolate Frosting and Moist Chocolate Cake. I was tempted to take an entire cake home. The last time I had the Lemon Cream Pie which was outstanding! The Food, Service & Overall Ambiance of Cafe 50's is Awesome! Cafe 50's is one of the first places we went to after moving to L.A. a couple of years ago. Since then we've been back several times and it's always a fun experience. Most recently we dropped in on a Friday night and were happy to see they were very busy! During the COVID days it was looking pretty bleak, but they seemed to have rebounded nicely! The burgers and the philly cheese steak are my go-to favorites, but I decided to try the infamous Monte Cristo this time around. Where have you been all my life?!? OMG so decadent but really, really good. The jam they serve with it works great to compliment the deep-fried gooey cheese and meat, and they get the crust just right so the whole thing holds together even after you cut it. Prices are what you'd expect for a restaurant of this type in L.A. - $15 or so for most entrees, shakes are $8. The crew working there is really nice and I've never had service problems. They don't run with 20 people so when it gets busy you're gonna have to wait a bit. But you see the same folks working there over time, which to me shows they're a decent place to work and worth supporting. The Cafe 50's on Santa Monica is walking distance to a couple of theaters and also a few bars, so lots to do in the area. The interior is a ton of fun with all of the retro on the walls, and if you get one of the two window seats you get a great view of the street to people watch. As you can see I love the concept of this diner mostly because they half ass their decor. Like I REALLY LOVED the decor. The staff was very informative after finding out it our first time. He answered all questions that we had and came by as much as possible to check in on us. Food. 2/5 I felt that my French toast was a little over cooked. My cinnamon banana French toast was over powered by the banana and I didn't taste the cinnamon as much as I thought I was going to get but that country fried steak!!!!!! OMG!!!! It had SOOOO much FLAVOR (chef kiss) A bunch of flavor in the gravy, the there's this amazing crunch to the steak that has more flavor and yes!!! It was awesome. I was very surprised because I've never tried a country fried steak from anywhere so it was my first. These other places will have a lot to be compared to. Granted this is the third time I've had a monte cristo and I'm not impressed with their version. I enjoyed the crispy deep fried coating but the inside was meh. The bread felt tough. The cheese wasn't as gooey as others described here. It's pretty bland overall for me. I had to out so much of the jam and even tried putting spicy brown dijon to try to have some kick, but overall a flop for me. For something over $17, no thanks. read more
