To begin with, their hand sanitizer dispenser at the door is always empty. The diner used to be much warmer and homey. I come here a lot by myself and also with my friends, I have been supporting them even when the pandemic was severe. They were nicer by far and used to make me feel really welcomed. Well, there are still a few staff members that are genuinely nice: but the pattern is that all those who know what hospitality is about quit (or get fired?) at some point, or get promoted and get cocky and/or superficial. Old fashioned coat hangers are next to each booth and the jukebox is booming (bring quarters!) Had lots of fun with my fiancé looking around at the walls and taking all the old advertisements. As instructed by my partner, I didn't come with high expectations- or really any expectation at all. However, what I didn't expect was to be fundamentally blown away by certain qualities of seemingly classic American food and drink. I'll start with the sad, grey burger I received. Without asking I was served a wheat bun, which I would never ask for as long as I remain myself for the rest of time and beyond into my intergalactic next celestial journey. Anyway I'll get to the point. My bun was hard like a rock and I'm not kidding. I tried to hit it with a knife and literally it wouldn't move or break or didn't even show any indication of blunt force trauma. The pickle tasted like it was soaked in battery acid as opposed to vinegar - which I tend to prefer. Haha. Even though I frustrated that I could probably stand on that bun and use it as a step stool I still was looking forward to my favorite orange dreamsicle shake. But also then I had to try the Butterfinger shake which curiously they actually don't use butterfinger mix, they actually are able to mix the flavors and create the most perfect rendition of Butterfinger without the candy that I've ever tasted. We did. We were met with a friendly staff member and told to choose a table of our liking. It was close to noon on 9/10/19. Order an appetizer-drink, also known as a milkshake. Lol. Our shared mocha shake ($6.95) was absolutely delicious. Ponder the Monte Cristo ($14.95). It's overall good, but the deep-fried batter was just a tad bit too oily. Not to worry, there were paper napkins to dab it on... UPDATE (9/18/19): the second time I had one was SO GOOD & not nearly as saturated with oil. Otherwise, the rest of the menu looked to be typical American diner food including breakfast all day. Ask for a piece of mixed berry pie ($6.95) to-go. They don't make it in-house, but they do bake it there. Still, it's delicious and great for sharing at home with the kiddos that missed out since they were in school. She's the sweetest woman. So attentive and approachable. I feel like I can tell her anything!! She was also one of the OG waitresses at the first location in the 80s. That's the sign of a great place. As someone who made a recent move far from family, I feel like I have a home here between Margie and the home cooked food. We love Cafe 50's. It is located in WLA and close to the 405 Fwy. It can get busy and I don't think they take reservations, but the line, if any moves fast and you will be glad you waited. Parking for the most part is on the street. Mind the signs. You will find a spot, we always do. It is just fun. They have toys for the kids and often have a magician there going from table to table (if you want) doing fun tricks. My grandson just loves this place. He gets a toy and plays with that while having one of their great milkshakes. They serve all classic American. Their breakfast is great and their burgers are super tasty. They have blueberry blintzes, grits, and real maple syrup for those great pancakes and waffles. Cafe 50's has booths and a counter. It is decorated with movie posters, adverts from the 50's. They have a classic Seeburg Jukebox, and I think it about 25 cents for a few songs. But there is always music playing. The service is fast and very friendly. We love it. First of all I love this diner & have gone there many times since being in LA for breakfast and lunch. Last night my husband and I went for Valentine's Day & my birthday. It was a little busier than usual due to the holiday. No big deal. A party of 6 people before us and another couple after us and a woman waiting for her son with us sitting on the window sill. Sitting right next to myself and my husband. The 6 people were seated because they were first. We were seated next and the couple after us seated. Then the woman waiting for her son seated or so we thought. No one else was waiting after her so it made sense to me she was seated after us in the same dining room. At a table where an older man dining alone was leaving and by the way two other big booths towards the back totally vacant as well. This was around 9:30 pm. Also the counter had two seats open while we all waited so not completely full. I think the lady waiting for her son who arrived right in front of me with their service dog which they did have documentation for, started being spoken to in another language by the woman also a waitress who was in charge of the list we all signed is being spoken to at length to about I am not sure what as if this woman and her son were in the wrong. Then they get served. Next this guy comes in from the side door grabs a chair from a stack and slams down the chair at their table. I think is he with them? He then begins to talk loudly in English to them. He is angry and telling them they cannot just walk in and take any table without being seated. He pounds his fist on their table. Everyone jumps. He also gives them a hard time about their service dog and they show him the proper paperwork so he of course says nothing and does not say he is sorry to them. I told him he was too loud and this is not the way to address a problem. He yells something over his shoulder to me. Never makes eye contact with me. I think since there were 3 empty big booths in the room with no other people waiting behind all of us just assumed she was next and took one of the three empty tables. I am guessing the one waitress called this guy who is the owner. He or she could easily say all of this or any of this in a conversational manner and no yelling let alone banging on the table is needed. All he had or the waitress had to do was explain that for next time please wait if they are that busy. I was there and saw exactly how it unfolded. This mom and her son were quiet and timid especially when the owner was yelling and pounded the table they were seated at. Rude and way of out of bounds. A huge over reaction to a misunderstanding. He would never talk that way to a man his size or a group of men. The six people at the table are also shocked when he yells and bangs the table with is fist. They nod to me when I ask him to quiet down. I don't like seeing people bullied like that in the world or myself. Again I seriously doubt he would behave like that with a larger man or men. Everyone can make a mistake or have a bad day. Its how you handle it next that shows your character. The mom and son were not arrogant or loud at all. They looked mortified as we all were. And I did speak with the mom and son when after he yelled and hit the table when he left after I asked to stop it. So I was in the loop, I saw it all unfold and the reaction to this mistake of the mom was way out of bounds. read more

But that's the objectively correct choice when you're at an American diner. Now I did end up spending a little more than that, because I bought a Peanut Butter Cup Milkshake. Cafe 50's has (literally) dozens of milkshake flavors, and... man, a lot of them are pretty tempting. The food itself, honestly, is just regular ol' diner food. I wouldn't give them a five-star rating based on their scrambled eggs. But the real draw of the diner is the ambience. Every square inch of the place is covered with Americana -- props, movie posters, magazine articles, etc. And that might sound a little tacky. Hell, maybe it *is* a little tacky. But you're surrounded 360-degrees by these items. It's not like Applebee's or something, where there's a bit of faux-Americana on the walls. The place actually divides up into 2 sides, and not as small as it looks. While I've only been here once, I don't doubt that all of their other dishes are fantastic.
