I tend to seek out places which offer anything ube. Thankfully they abound in San Diego. But Cafe 86 takes it to a new level. It's a small shop sort of hidden away in a larger plaza by Seafood City. The interior is quiet, clean, and welcoming. The first things you will notice is the large menu on the wall and the display case of pastries. For my first visit, I ordered an ube monster milkshake (ube with crumbled Oreo) to enjoy there. Mini was plenty large enough. I also selected an ube tart to partake of later at home. Both were absolutely delicious and not overly sweet. Service was friendly and efficient. All fellow diners seemed to be having a great time too! This time, I kept it simple and ordered an Ube Monster Milkshake. The shake was creamy with the earthy ube flavor that I was looking for. The Oreo bits bring out the ube taste even more. I was satisfied with the mini size since it can get pretty sweet after a while. Ton of people and there are two people in the back. This is the only place that I will eat halo-halo from! I tried the upside down halo-halo and it was divine! I don't normally eat halo-halo because the crushed ice is too hard or my jaw gets frozen after eating three bites. With the halo-halo from Cafe 86, they blend the ice into a milkshake and each gelatin color has a different flavor. I also tried their Ube pop tart and that was really good as well. This quaint little cafe has a very cozy interior, and is a local favorite for studying or relaxing. I decided to give them a try on a Sunday afternoon, and I was amazed by how many people there were. The Halo Halo drink was very unique, I liked the ube ice cream on top of the Frosted Flakes and milk slush, eventually it melted and you could mix it with the rest of the drink. I wasn't a huge fan of the green and red jellies inside as they were super solid. I may try another drink next time. The ube butter bar was absolutely delicious! I would recommend you give it a try. It's a perfect pairing alongside some coffee or tea. Leche flan ube cupcake 10/10! I've never tastier something so uniquely yummy. The flan was perfect texture, thick and creamy. The ube cupcake part was also thick. If you prefer lighter and fluffier cupcakes this isn't it but it tastes a little like cassava or mochi like and was so delicious! I didn't really like their ube milk tea, it tasted too floral for my liking. To me it tasted a little bit like bathroom spray. Was really excited to try this place! I'm a huge fan of ube. I have literally drove here twice before checking their hours and they ended up being closed, oops. Finally got to visit, but what we got was just okay. The Ube Latte was pretty sweet and tasted a little artificial/powdery. Not a fan of it and wouldn't get it again. The Halo Halo Bread Pudding with Ube Ice Cream was really good. The bread pudding was moist, sweet, but mostly reminded me of banana bread with hints of ube. Cafe 86 is a must try in the Mira Mesa area! They have locations all around California, but the Mira Mesa location is located in a plaza with Seafood City, Goldilocks, and Chow King. It has plenty of parking, and you shouldn't even have a problem parking out front! I had the Mahalo Mango with Chia seeds, and I thought it was excellent! The flavors went well together, and the chia seeds provided an extra pleasant texture. I do wish that we're able to adjust sweetness though, because I do think some of their drinks come off a little sweet. The vibe of the place is very suitable for many purposes, whether its for friends to hang out, or for people to get work done. Ube Overload Happiness! If you like ube, you've got to go here. I have been to a Cafe 86 in Pasadena, but unfortunately the pandemic caused that location to close. I was SAD to see that this Mira Mesa wasn't filled with ube lovers. I was here on a Friday and Saturday night. I was expecting to see this placed filled with ube foodies. What is going on people? You've got to try this place out! If you're fearful of dining in, you could always pick up your order at the store. In fact, their website has at Store Pickup. My favorite dessert here is their upside down halo halo. It is an Ube Shake with Coconut Jellies (Nata de Coco) , Jack Fruit (Langka) and Boba (Sago) on the bottom. It is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, Frosted Flakes, and a piece of Leche Flan. I asked them to substitute the scoop of vanilla ice cream with UBE ice cream. After the table that was sitting more than 6 feet away from us had finished their desserts, someone from their table ordered 2 upside down halo halos with Ube ice cream to take home with them. When I told someone that the halo halo was topped with Frosted Flakes, they thought that it was strange since the old school halo halo is topped with pinipig. If you've had deep fried ice cream at a Mexican restaurant, then you could imagine what the ube ice cream tasted like with Frosted Flakes. Oh my goodness... it's delicious! If you have never had a halo halo, you have got to come here and try the halo halo at this location. Our Baby Girl wanted to take us out for dinner, so we decided to eat at our fave ramen restaurant in our area, which is Menya Ultra. After satisfying our ramen fix, we all wanted to eat dessert to complete our quality family meal dining experience. We couldn't decide on where to have dessert because the three of us had different recommendations, so our girl found Cafe 86 and off we drove. This was our first time trying Cafe 86 and there definitely were some opportunity areas. Our family has visited this same location when it was a different dessert spot. Cafe 86 is located in Mira Mesa, specifically within the Seafood City shopping center. It's actually on the same side of Seafood City next to a Sherwin-Williams Paint store and within walking distance from RakiRaki, Manila Fast Food & Desserts, and Siam Nara Thai Cuisine. Inside Cafe 86, I really liked the brick facade and wooden slat walls; the stained brown tables with metal chairs; the lounge area with sofa and lounge chair seating; the figurines like Darth Vader, Manny Pacquiao, and the Iron Sheik; and the cleanliness of the restaurant. The two young men behind the counter on Tuesday 4/18 need to work on being more friendly and less shy. This was our first time, so when our food and drinks were ready for pickup, we were about to leave without picking up the container of ube ice cream because no one said that everything on that counter was ours. If you're a Filipino dessert aficionado, then I think you'll want to try out their desserts and drinks because they are derived from such well known Filipino desserts like Ube, which is a purple yam that is a well-liked component of traditional Filipino desserts due to its vibrant purple core, mild and sweet flavor, and coconut-like aroma. I'm a Filipino food connoisseur who loves all Filipino savory and all Filipino sweet, so I was looking forward to tasting the visually appealing and delicious sounding desserts and beverages seen in their display case and written on their gigantic menu board. For our desserts, we chose the Halo Halo Bread Pudding and the Ube Crack Cheesecake. For my beverage, I decided on the Nutella Latte. The Halo Halo Bread Pudding was dry and it was not moist like bread puddings I'm accustomed to. It tasted okay, but it was lacking for me. The Ube Crack Cheesecake had what the bread pudding was missing. It was rich, moist, and tasted so much better. I did not taste any of the nutella in my latte. We had visited at close to 6pm and they had crossed out the sandwiches signifying that they were sold out, which is disappointing considering that dinner just started. Cafe 86 definitely has potential, but based on my first experience, I was disappointed.
